UJ ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMME (UJELP)

Duration: 36 weeks Credits: 24 NQF Level 5

PurposeUJELP (“Huge Help”) is a series of intensive language lab sessions intended to introduce international students to the English language in all its aspects: speaking, listening, reading and writing. To fulfill this intention, the programme consists of three modules, in line with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) (Council of Europe, 2001).

The Modules are: • Elementary A1 and Elementary A2

(UJELP ELE)• Intermediate B1 and Intermediate

B2 (UJELP INT)• Advanced C1 and Advanced C2

(UJELP ADV)The Programme should be completed in two stages: the Placement Test and the Language Training Module Classes. Before completing the language modules, candidates are required to take a UJELP Placement Test (UJELP PT) with four components: Grammar & Vocabulary, Listening, Writing and Oral Presentation.

Target GroupInternational students who would like to apply for admission at the university and who are required to present proof of English language proficiency or foreign nationals who would like to learn English.

Admission RequirementsSenior Certificate, Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification or equivalent experience

Duration of ProgrammeThe Programme spans over 36 weeks or 6 weeks for each of the 6 Levels as follows:

Elementary A1 6 weeks

Elementary A2 6 weeks

Intermediate B1 6 weeks

Intermediate B2 6 weeks

Advanced C1 6 weeks

Advanced C2 6 weeks

Total 36 weeks

Where do you live? What do you do? - At the restaurant- At the bus stop- At the clinic- In the library- At the airport

Vocabulary - a/ an/ the- The alphabet and numbers (cardinal)- Days of the week/ month of the year/

seasons/ countries- professions/ occupations- things in the house/ foods - things in the classroom- parts of the human body

Reading comprehension - Dealing with homesickness and a sense of

isolation- Adjusting to a foreign culture and

community

Grammar & writing activities- Simple sentence construction - Present tense: simple present, simple past,

simple future- Parts of speech: pronouns, adjectives,
