As I write this article, my morning SCN briefing carried these three headlines: Idaho Memorial to Anne Frank Vandalized; Swastikas, Racial Slurs Painted on Walls at Santaluces High; Pro-Israel Mural at UCSB Defaced Amid Divestment Debate. The stories ranged from vandalism at a memorial park, to racially-charged graffiti at a Florida high school, to a tension- filled BDS debate on a California campus. Incidents such as these have, unfortunately, become all too frequent events in the daily headlines in communities around the country. And the stories just noted are relatively mild and “routine” compared to many I see each day. Statistics indicate that there has been a significant rise in racial and anti-Semitic incidents in the past year and beginning of this year. Many folks with much more expertise than I, have written numerous articles concerning the rise of racial and anti- Semitic attacks on persons and property in the US and around the world. And there are a variety of theories and discussions of trends and implications concerning these attacks. For me, and the staff and volunteer leadership of the UJC and our campus and community partners in the Jewish community, the theories are less important than the practical reality that the security of our institutions and our facilities needs to be a high and continuous priority. Soon (we are on a waiting list), the UJCVP will be provided with a state-of-the-art, emergency alert system that will be made available to all our institutions and members for a very nominal fee. This system is provided to all Jewish Federation communities through the Jewish Federation of North America (JFNA) at a heavily subsidized rate. Like Amber Alert and weather alert systems, it has the capability to instantly notify organizations, family units, and individuals via cell phone, land line, text, or email, simultaneously, of any alert issues affecting individual institutions, the local UJC community, or the Jewish community at large. UJC President, Jody Sarfan, has appointed a Campus Security Committee, co-chaired by Sam Margolin and Mike Stupar. This committee has met with representatives of the three congregations on the UJC campus to develop a security checklist addressing the concerns of all our campus partners. The Committee will also be expanded to include congregations not physically on the campus to see if there are ways that the UJC might assist in addressing security concerns for all our Peninsula Jewish institutions. We are committed to be as proactive as practical, in the current climate we find ourselves, to support all our members right to safe and secure participation in the many and varied activities of our organized Jewish community. I welcome any suggestions and concerns, our members might have in assisting us with this vital initiative. What does chaos look like? Laugh Out Loud (LOL). Chaos is what the UJC looks like on any given day right now. Or is it?

Our students in the the Community Hebrew School supported by our Annual Campaign use a curriculum that, early on, teaches them the Hebrew term , “tohu va’vohu,” which is found in the beginning of the first book of the Torah, B’reshit. Tohu va’vohu is introduced during the story of creation and is translated as “chaos.” Before G-d started the process of creation there was chaos in the universe. In this case, just as in ours, chaos led to creation. Bulldozers, dirt, noise, building shakes, and loud drills outside our doors greet us every day on our campus. In addition, we are regularly space-challenged trying to find all necessary venues for all activities and religious services that we are housing.

Yes, the chaos takes its toll when the drilling makes us jump, or numerous and overlapping room bookings make us a bit frazzled. But another word might be more appropriately descriptive as this is all chaos with a smile, a goal, and a vision. When the dust settles, the drills quiet, the internet doesn’t cut off from an inadvertent cut wire, and the water ceases to need to be turned off occasionally, the final result will be exciting new space for congregations and our entire community. Chaos creates. But creation here, whether it’s running our community Hebrew School or getting ready for another year of Camp Chaverim (fun chaos!) doesn’t happen--in fact, can’t happen--without your help. Your Annual Campaign dollars create. They build, serve, educate, and care for an entire community. None of this creation is sustainable without your generosity.

Campaign 2017 - Sarah Barnett, Campaign Director

Do Something Magical!Belle S. Frank did when she created the Belle S. Frank Endowment, a part of the UJCVP Endowment Fund to support the educational needs of the community. In recent years this program-specific Endowment Fund has insured that our Community Hebrew School in Newport News and Williamsburg can accommodate children at almost no cost to families. In addition, the fund supports our Camp Chaverim Shaliach program, which provides us with two Israeli counselors at camp each summer. The boisterous and happy atmosphere at Hebrew School is only matched by the sounds of group prayers that we hear in the afternoon and the skills our children are acquiring. In summer camp, visiting our Israel room is a favorite, and our Israeli guests and facilitators are always a huge hit with the camp and staff. Belle Frank is no longer with us, but she did something magical that will be her legacy forever.

If you are interested in Doing Something Magical by leaving an unrestricted bequest, or setting up a special fund, please contact Steve Wendell or Sarah Barnett to discuss your options in creating your own legacy.

First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has donated food and gift cards to the Jewish Family Service. At this time, the most needed items include canned tuna, fruit, and soup as well as gift cards for groceries to help with expenses for perishable, frozen, or refrigerated items. We greatly appreciate your support of our agency and the services that we provide to those in need. All donations of food or gift cards are tax deductible and may be dropped off at the Jewish Family Service office or at the main desk at the United Jewish Community Center. Lifting the Mystery Surrounding the Modern Mikveh

I recently had the opportunity to meet people from another culture and religion.  I approached this with a bit of nervousness, afraid that I would feel like a voyeur or an intruder in a space very different from what I am used to.  As a convert, I have been exposed to religious diversity, but this was different.  I was afraid that I would feel as though I was trespassing.  What I found, though, was a warm, welcoming group of people.

Today, Jews may feel the same way about entering a modern mikveh. Jews and non‐Jews alike enter mikveh buildings, nervous that they will be trespassing within a sacred and intimate space, while others show up believing that this ritual is foreign and unrelatable.

Mikveh is still not a very well‐known ritual outside of the Orthodox Jewish community. For this reason and many others, it is shrouded in mystery, and, like many things that we know too little about, our lack of information leads to misconceptions. Mikveh remains something that, within the Jewish world, we treat as taboo, secret, and often times, oppressive. And yet, we know this is simply not the case.

Our goal is to create a modest but warm mikveh space where all will be welcome.  Please let us know if we can answer any questions.  We truly appreciate your support.
