Thank you for your interest in the 2014 edition of the Illini Drumline! As the beginning of a new

season approaches, the pride, excellence, tradition, and loyalty of the Marching Illini remains

unchanged. Potential members must exhibit these traits through not only their music, but through

their performance and overall presence. Provided in the packet are basic exercises that must be

learned and memorized before the official audition date, as well as instrument-specific

information and music.

Evaluation and Consideration of Membership are based upon:

These clinics are intended to help prospective members evaluate themselves and also, in more detail,

learn about the Illini Drumline technique and style. Each instrument-specific packet contains a small

description about our approach, but in order to have the most accurate interpretation, plan to attendat least one of these clinics! This is also a great opportunity to get a better feel of the music and meet

other musicians from around the country who love to drum as well.

This will be the date where individual auditions take place. All sections will have an individual

audition. Although clinic dates are not part of the official audition process, individual improvement

will be recognized and awarded.

INDIVIDUAL AUDITION:

The entire packet is fair game for the individual audition. We may not ask you to play all of the

content, but please be prepared to play all of it. Also, everyone besides cymbal players should be

prepared to play a 1-2 minute solo of your choice to perform.

VIDEO AUDITION:

If unable to attend the official audition date, please refer to the video submission instructions on the

website.

Before diving into the packet, always remember to perform and exude excellence in everything you

do. Being a member of the Nation’s Premier College Marching Band, we perform and impact the

lives of hundreds of thousands every season. Always keep your chin up and never give up. Best of

Marching Illini Drumline Bass Packet

Hello,

Congratulations on taking the first step to becoming a member of the Marching Illini

Bassline. I hope to see you at the clinics and the audition. The clinics will be geared moretowards teaching technique and approach, while the audition will be an evaluation of your

progress and potential. It is HIGHLY recommended that you attend the clinics, as it willgive you an upper hand in knowledge and experience come the day of the audition.

As far as music goes, in addition to learning the bass splits for the exercises that have

them, you should also invest time in learning the snare parts to some of the more basicexercises. While we won’t be playing snare parts often, they serve as an excellent tool tobuild chops, practice technique, and get a feel for timing; all of these will be evaluated in

the audition. In addition to these qualities, you will also be evaluated by how preparedyou are for the camps, how much progress you make during/between camps, and by yourattitude.

A quick note on technique: at Illinois, we play with a full wrist break. We’ll go over whatthat means at the clinics, but you should know that it is very similar to playing match grip

on a practice pad. Therefore it should be adequate for you practice on a normal practicepad. You should bring a pad and sticks to the audition, as generally we have more

drummers than drums and you will not be on a drum the whole time.
