IRA Super modifled stock car driver, uses a Plymouth Wedge engine in his No. 43 stock car. It is identical to the engine now used by NASCAR stock car star Richard Petty in his No 43 electric blue Plynaouthlate model stock car. Saturday night at the Kenosha County/Speedway in Wilmot, 'Bergsma rounded, out the similiarity to the million dollar NASCAR Champion by winning the 30 lap feature, race.' It was the first win for Bergsma in an IRA feature since he won at Raceway Park in Blue Island on June 7 of last _year._^rgsmajbecame the 7th different IRA driver~to~win at— Wilmot in 11 races completed this season and the flrst non-Chevy 'powered feature winner there in niore than two years. He started outside in the first row, look the lead from pole starter Harold Wade, Gurnee on the hack straightaway and led every lap. His margin at the end was probably greater than enjoyed by any other driver of the season. In victory circle he gave credit to a shakedown mn on the previous night at the Grundy County* Speedway where he made several test laps in anticipation- of possible sanction by IRA^at that track . when the season closes at Wilmot on September 4. Bergsma's win ended the . two in a row streak by point - leader 'JOhnny Reimer, Caledonia, Reimer worked his way up to 3rd but couldn't move around Roger Otto, Burlington before the checkered flag fell. Al Schili, Franksville was 4th with team mate Jim BoQhles, Hales Comers getting fifth. Defending IRA Champion, Whitey Harris, Lake Villa was a late starter in the feature race. His car had been damaged in a heat race accident and he drove the~first"altemate starter's car belonging to Roger Isles, Waukegan. Isles raced in the semi-feature but spun out. Insufficient time remained for the crew to fuel the car and adjust the seat belt and drivers Moulder harness for Harris and he drove onto the track just as the feature started. He finished; 15th and lost further ground in the point battle with leader Reimer.* Again the large field of 54 modifieds produced the extra * 5th heat race and the added 12 lap consolation race. For Bergsma it was a night with a. double victory as he :was the winner in the fifth heat. Others were won hy Ray Dropp, Palatine, John Rank,. Milwaukee, Roger Otto and Paul Cameron, Round Lake. Cameron also won the 15 lap semi-feature race. IRA Senior . Citizen driver Pop Kline, Genoa City won the^ consolation race. The Sportsman stock car feature was a mucli closer up-front race, than the super modified race with Joe Gresk, ^ F^klhi aiid Jim Steckling, West Allis, runnigii wheel to wheel for several laps while fast qualifiers Jack; Ashenbrehner, Hales Comers and Wes Eckert, ^ Greenfield worked their way through from the back. When they finally got behind the leaders, Eckert was lined up tightly behind Gresk who nov\r was edging slightly ahead of Steckling who was followed closely by Ashenbrenner.; This gave Eckert the slight advantage he needed and he soon moved i n t o the 1 e ad with Ashenbrenner quickly changing lanes and following suit. - The win went to Eckert ,w h o just outraced Ashenbrenner for the remaining laps. Eckert had Just been re-instated in IRA following a full apology to Officials for verbal abuse and an attempt: to organize a drivers strike at Wilmot two riascsisiiifl weeks ago. ^ A high of 36 Sportsman stock cars produced four 10 lap heats which were won by Dave Zilmer, Silver Lake, Lou Mierendorpf, Oak Creek, t)on Schmitz, Kenosha and Ashenbrenner. Zilmer came back to win the semi-feature race over Craig Lake and Denny Jackley. Attendance ^vas 3963 and the drivers purse $3750.00? This Saturday night will be Kenosha County Fair night at Wilmot and the driveis will race foi^ the Fair Championship Trophy to be presented by the Queen yet to be named. Reimer Competes In USAG Race Johnny Reimer, Caledonia, competed-in the^USAC Jate^ model stock car race at the: Wisconsin International Speed- way today but didn't do as well as the vrinner there Bobby Unser. Reimer lost oil pressure in his Camaro and retumed while running 12th. After fly- ing to the Playboy Airport in Lake Geneva, he did a com- plete turn around of events and won a very thrilling 30 lap feature race in the IRA Super modifieds. Reimer took the lead and the win away from Lake Gen- eva Raceway point leiader Whitey Harris, rl^ke Villa, on the 18th lap. Their battle be- fore the lead change was one of the highlights of the season. Heat race.winners were Jim; Camerbn-and^ Bill Boiin,_both of Kenosha, Jim Sullivan, Fox Lake and Al Schill, Franksville, Bohn also won the semi feature race taking the lead away from popular Pop kiine, Genoa City. In the Sportsman Stock Car events, Wes Eckert, Greenfield made it two feature wins in as many nights as he beat Jack Ashenbrenner here again toni- ght Heats races were won by first Eckert and the Ashenbren- ner.
