Artificial intelligence, internet of things and big data demystified: Part II

Mariette Awad Mariette Awad is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at AUB.

Her current research focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics and Internet of things. She has received 21 grants to support her research, including two multidisciplinary multi-million dollar grants from the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and Intel. Her work culminated in a book Efficient Machine Learning in 2015 as well as more than 70 conference, book chapter, and journal publications. Awad has been an invited speaker and reviewer at a number of international conferences and journals. Prior to her academic position, she was with IBM System and Technology group in Vermont for six years as a wireless product engineer where her technical leadership and innovative spirit has earned her management recognition twice, two business awards, and 10 patents. Awad obtained her PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Vermont (2007).

We live in an era of autonomic computing, an era which looks like science fiction with all the services technology offers us. But for the collected data to become useful knowledge a challenging process awaits data scientists, engineers and developers. If you have ever wondered about this process and more specifically: what is Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of things (IOT) and Big Data (BD) then this session is for you as it aims to demystify the latest research and limitations of these fields in a fun and interactive manner. In this session, we will build on the knowledge acquired in Part I where basic concepts of AI, IOT and BD were covered to move into more fascinating technological achievements Number of sessions: one Date: Tuesday, December 6 Time: 10:30 am – 12:00 noon Capacity: Unlimited (Open to members only)

Household waste – sort, recycle or?

Mazen Bachir Born in Beirut, November 1978, Mazen Bachir is the former CEO of Passavant Energy & Environment, headquartered in Frankfurt and operating globally.

Passavant is one of the world's leading water, wastewater and sludge treatment specialist design and build contractors and their scope also includes municipal household waste treatment. He received a BSc from the American University of Beirut (1999) and completed his studies at Manchester University of Science and Technology (2004). He previously held several positions specializing in the environment in England,

Complex, yet not complicated, not so far away from the political tug of war, driven by adverse interests, there actually does exist a substantially developed and world-proven, tried and tested methodology for handling municipal solid waste in countries, irrespective of their development levels. If one is able to step above the political turmoil and man-made confusion, the concept and principles of Integrated Solid Waste Management actually make for an extremely effective method of handling solid waste, not in Beirut alone, but across the whole country. Whilst the government must retain full responsibility for the solution, we, as members of the society, have a large and important role to play too.

Germany and the UAE all in the fields of design, construction, operation and maintenance of water, sewage, sludge and household waste treatment plants including anaerobic digestion and modern incinerators in Germany, Turkey and Lebanon; he is currently an independent consultant in the areas of environment and renewable/alternative energy. After family and work, he keeps fit with his regular gym routine, and weekly football sessions.

After all, cities, with populations six or eight times the whole of Lebanon are able to handle municipal waste with almost no fuss… Aren’t we, as Lebanese, big enough to be able to emulate? A new role for business in society: the hype of corporate social responsibility

Dima Jamali

Dima Jamali is Professor in the Olayan School of Business, AUB and currently holding the Kamal Shair Chair in Responsible Leadership and serving as

Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development. She has a PhD in Social Policy and Administration, from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. Her research and teaching revolve primarily around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Social Entrepreneurship (SE). She is the author/editor of four books and over 65 international publications, focusing on various aspects of CSR in developing countries in general and in the Middle East region specifically. She is the winner of the 2015 Aspen Institute Faculty Pioneer Award, dubbed by the Financial Times as “the Oscars of the Business School World”. She is also winner of the Shield of Excellence for the Arab Region and designated as Personality of the Year for CSR by the Arab Organization for Social Responsibility in 2015. She is also winner of the 2010 Shoman Prize for best young Arab researcher. In 2013, she was selected for the Eisenhower Fellows Program; she was also selected in 2007 for the British Academy of Management Fellowship for South Asia and the Middle East. She is also winner of the AUB Teaching Excellence Award in 2006.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that has attracted worldwide attention and gained momentum in the global economy. In recent years, heightened interest in CSR has risen in our local context to an accentuated focus on the role of business in society. Companies in Lebanon are increasingly seeking to differentiate themselves through their CSR engagement. This lecture examines the historical and current context, drivers, and ways that CSR initiatives are evolving on the local, regional and global level. It will explore different ways that firms are becoming more socially responsible and evaluate the extent to which different types of social responsibility initiatives are strategic. The lecture will also provide insights on the convergence and divergence of national CSR practices. Throughout the lecture, specific case examples from Lebanon and region will be presented to provide concrete illustrations of CSR in practice and the wider resonance of notions of shared value creation. Number of sessions: one Date: Tuesday, November 15 Time: 5:30 – 7:00 pm Capacity: Unlimited (Open to members only)

Cities in the Arab world: Weighty Legacies and Poor Livability… Any Opportunities?

Mona Harb Mona Harb is Professor of Urban Studies and Politics at the American University of Beirut. She received her PhD in Political Science in 2005 from the Institut

d'Etudes Politiques at Aix-Marseille (France). She is the author of Le Hezbollah à Beyrouth (1985-2005): de la banlieue à la ville (Karthala-IFPO, 2010), co-author of Leisurely Islam: Negotiating Geography and Morality in Shi'ite South Beirut (Princeton University Press, 2013, with Lara Deeb,), and co-editor of Local Governments and Public Goods: Assessing Decentralization in the Arab World (Beirut: LCPS, 2015, with Sami Atallah). Her ongoing research investigates local governance and city strategies, as well as youth mobilization and exclusion. Harb is a trustee of the Arab Council for the Social Sciences and founder and co-editor of the Cities Page on Jadaliyya e-zine.

In this talk, I will discuss how cities in the Arab world are the products of two global forces: colonialism and international political struggles (or neoliberalism). Colonial cities are characterized by state-led modern urban planning that seeks to order and discipline citizens. Nation-states’ cities also use urban planning and design tools to assert their power. Both trends, in addition to wars, yield rural-urban migration, displacements, and socio-spatial inequalities that impact significantly cities’, which grow rapidly, become impoverished and divided. With the consolidation of neoliberal market economies, cities get further entrenched into inequalities, and marked by gentrification, informalization, segregation, and contestation. Today’s cities in the Arab world have very poor livability indexes, impacting significantly the daily lives of their dwellers. What can be done to improve urban livelihoods, in a context where public actors are closely affiliated with private interests, and civil society activists have very limited means to impact decision-making and advocate for the public good? I will present a few case studies illustrating opportunities for change against the odds. Number of sessions: one Date: Wednesday, September 21 Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 noon Capacity: Unlimited (Open to members only)

Why public transport is needed? Integrated policies to achieve sustainable urban mobility

Tammam Nakkash Tammam Nakkash is a Founding Partner of TEAM International, an engineering and management consultant, based in Beirut and operating across the MENA

region. He has been directly in charge of several master transport plans and transport systems studies for several capitals and cities of the MENA region. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and a Distinguished Alumnus of the FEA at AUB. He was Vice Chairman

The presentation will explore the fundamentals of sustainable transport, and will identify the role of public transport in achieving sustainability. Examples of successful international experience will be presented. The fallacy of trying to combat traffic congestion through building wider roads and providing more parking will be exposed. Hurdles hindering development of organized public transport in our region are analyzed. Prerequisites for success are identified. Throughout the lecture there will be parallels drawn to local conditions to enable better understanding of abstract concepts. The lecture is in the form of a Power Point

5) History

Darwin’s Theory of Evolution in 19th and Early 20th Century Beirut

Mohammad S. Al-Zein Mohammad was born in the mountains and raised by a family that cherishes books, gardens and nature as they cherish daily bread. It was only natural that

he specialized in plant biology and ecology. Mohammad’s interest in the history of Darwin’s theory in the region stems from his fascination with the theory of evolution, and an acquired interest in the history of natural history in the Levant. He acquired and developed this interest when he was studying under Prof. Lytton J. Musselman, especially known for his work on holy plants and George Edward Post, botanist and founding father of the American University of Beirut. Mohammad has taught at several universities in Lebanon and abroad and conducted field work in several countries in Southwest Asia. He has authored /co-authored more than fifteen papers, book chapters and technical reports.

July 1, 1858 marks the birth of modern biology according to many historians of science. On this date, two British naturalists, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace, made natural selection, their scientific explanation of biological evolution, public through papers read in their absence at a meeting of the Linnaean Society of London. One year later, Darwin published “On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection”, the book that would link his name to the theory of evolution forever. The 4,500 kilometers separating Beirut and London were no obstacle for the spread of the theory of evolution to the Levant. In this presentation, I address how the academia and media in 19th and early 20th century Beirut received Darwin and his theory. Emphasis will be placed on the Lewis Affair at the Syrian Protestant College, the Darwin-William Van Dyck correspondence, and the literature published on Darwin and evolution. 6) Economics and banking

Hidden aspects of the Lebanese economy

Toufic Gaspard Toufic Gaspard holds a D.Phil. in economics from the University of Sussex, U.K. He previously lectured in economics at AUB and at Université St Joseph,

worked as commercial banker in the US, Europe, and Lebanon, and at the central bank of Lebanon. He was Advisor to Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, and, recently, Senior Economic Advisor to the Minister of Finance. He has written “A Political Economy of Lebanon, 1948-2002: The Limits of Laissez-faire”, 2004, Brill Academic Publishers (translated into Arabic at Dar An-Nahar), and several studies and reports for multilateral organizations such as the EU. He is currently writing a book on the connection between Arab labor conditions and political developments in the region in recent decades. In parallel, he is spending more time than he should, reading and writing about the symbiosis/conflict between religion and politics in history

Lebanon’s Government or Parliament have rarely, if ever, discussed in detail the economic and financial conditions in Lebanon, especially the worrisome public debt, since the early 1990s. The risk of a financial crisis, with its dire economic and political consequences, is steadily mounting. Discussions in the media are often superficial or un-informed. The lecture proposes to examine fundamentals of the Lebanese economy, where we currently stand, the explicit risks we face, and what can effectively be done about it.

The Bolshoi Ballet: Romeo & Juliet

Salwa El-Khatib I started taking ballet classes at the age of 14 at the Académie Libanaise Des Beaux Arts and performed leading roles such as Les Bavardes, 7'eme valse de

Chopin and Première Lettre d'Amour. I taught ballet at the age of 16 and then at the age of 19, I joined the Annie Dalat school of ballet. In 1957-58 I went to London to train with Sigurd Leeder, one of the pioneers of modern dance. In 1962-63, I joined a modern dance course at the Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA. And then in 1984, I took a course at the Royal Academy of Dance in London. In 1979, I opened my own school: the Salwa Aoun El Khatib dance workshop which lasted until 2008. I choreographed several dances for the musical productions of the Beirut College for Women (now LAU). I am presently writing my memoirs on ballet. I am proud to have discovered many good dancers, some of whom are now ballet teachers.

Romeo & Juliet Ballet will be screened while Salwa will comment and lead a discussion. Music: Sergel Prokofiev Choreography: Yuri Grigorovich After: William Shakespeare Musical Direction: Andrey Anikhanov The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra Romeo: Alexander Volchkov; Juliet: Anna Nikulina; Tybalt: Mikhail Lobukhim and the Bolshoi Cops de Ballet Presentation: This ballet is considered to be Prokofiev's most valued piece of work because of the highly melodic inspiration, the great variety of rhythms and the memorable main characters. Yuri Grigorovich revived Sergie Prokofiev’s production in 1978. Today's choreographic version is a revival of this first production. Grigorovich developed Juliet's character from his personal memories of Natalia Bassmertnova, his wife and very first Juliet. ACT I: In Renaissance Verona, Capulets and Montagues have been fighting for decades. After yet another fight, young Romeo Montague, Mercutio and their friends attend their enemies' masked ball. Romeo dances with Juliet Capulet, whom he later meets at her balcony. ACT II: The couple is secretly married by Friar Lawrence. On the following morning, Mercutio fights with Tybalt, Juliet's cousin. Mercutio is killed and Romeo avenges his friend. Seeing Tybalt dead, Romeo flees the city. Juliet's parents force her into accepting to marry Count Paris. Friar Lawrence tries to have the two lovers reunited. Number of sessions: one Date: Tuesday, November 29 Time: 5:30 – 7:00 pm

Aging is an inevitable path that has similar patterns across different species. The face is a very dynamic structure, its aging is affected by multiple factors: genetic, molecular, metabolic, environmental, gravitational, and weight changes. Over the past two decades there has been a significant evolution in the medical and surgical techniques that can reverse some of the changes that are caused by aging. Prevention and maintenance are current strategies that can delay some of the aging changes.

Traditional Chinese medicine, philosophy to science

Nicholas G. Khairallah Born in Beirut 1977. Finished his studies in Physical Therapy at Saint Joseph University (USJ) in 2002.

After eight years in practice at his private clinic, Nicholas felt the urge to learn new and more effective techniques in order to help his patients fight their chronic pain. He was keen to discover the universe of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and got his diploma in TCM from (USJ) and Tianjin University - China in 2011. Since then he is passionate about TCM and experienced outstanding results in different medical cases that are not only related to physical therapy. As a lecturer, he is eager to share his passion, expertise and broad knowledge related to TCM, ergonomics, physical therapy and pain management. Free time for him is about adventure, he is a nature lover, full of positive energy, and is detail oriented which is obviously transmitted in his work.

The modern life style has improved the way of living but also made us exposed to more and more sicknesses and symptoms. Most of the time we blame “Stress” or believe that this disease is “Idiopathic”. Let’s try to think wider and outside the box! Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on a tradition of more than 2000 years. What started as a philosophy and a way of living back then, is now becoming a science. A “Pain free” and “No side effect” technique: in this lecture we will be talking about the history of TCM, the basic theory of “Yin and Yang”, the meridians, The Yellow Emperor advices for a healthy way of living and finally evident base and indications of TCM. Art therapy: mental health through creative expression

Myra Saad Myra Saad earned her M.A. in Art Therapy and Mental Health Counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, US. Building on specialized academic

studies in the field and her innate sensitive nature, Myra is dedicated to using creative expression whenever and however she can to promote mental health and self-development. Between Boston and Beirut, she has worked as art therapist in hospitals, prisons, rehab centers, refugee camps, schools, and other settings. Myra is a member of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) and has co-organized and presented at conferences in various countries among Lebanon, US and China. In 2014, Myra founded "Artichoke Studio- Art Therapy Center in Lebanon" to promote art therapy as a recognized mental health profession in Lebanon and to provide art therapy based on high professional standards, often collaborating with local and international organizations and professionals.

Art making, like playing music or running, can be de-stressing and relaxing. Yet art therapy aims at more than the momentarily elevation of pain. How can art making be therapeutic and lead to self-awareness and mental health? Is art therapy only for children? Does the art therapist analyze drawings? This lecture will introduce the field of art therapy, answer frequently asked questions about the practice, clarify some misconceptions, and give examples on how it was applied with children refugees, adults dealing with anxiety, patients fighting cancer, and others. Azmi Philip Imad Azmi Imad was the president of the National Campus Safety Association in the United States in 1988 and 1989.

He founded and directed the first environmental health and safety departments at both the University of Colorado Boulder and the American University of Beirut. Azmi received many honors and awards for safety leadership and outstanding safety services in the US and was a safety consultant to the National Institute of Health. Those holding the certificate will get discount on car insurance in certain states. The NSC has been in existence for more than 100 years and the DDC has been developed during the last 52 years and has been proven to reduce collisions, death and injury to drivers and the public at large. The two-hour presentation at the UFS will include a basic summary of the course and hands on demonstration of basic car care that participants can do. A question and answer session will also be included. Number of sessions: one Date: Friday, September 23 Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 noon

The time that remains by Elia Suleiman The Time That Remains is a 2009 semi-biographical drama film written and directed by Palestinian director Elia Suleiman. The movie serves as a portrait of Palestinians living as a minority in their homeland between 1948 and present day. Inspired by his own father’s diaries, Elia recounts memories of when his dad was a resistance fighter back in 1948, of letters that his mother wrote to the families that were forced to move and their choice to stay back. It is about being labeled an ‘Israeli-Arab’, and about exploring Palestinian daily life and society. The movie has been screened in the Toronto International Film Festival and has won the Jury Grand Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards among others.

career in regional and multinational corporations where she grew from territory sales manager, to country manager, to international product manager, growing the $600 million revenue brands she managed all over the world, leading international integration strategies and serving on upstream product development teams. At “trace”, she is the Shifting Mindsets guru, she’s all into understanding human behavior and proposing different perspectives that help individuals and organizations gain awareness on their roles in conflicts, allow them to see the others’ side of the story and motivate them to take action and do things differently to improve their mindsets, better their life, relationships and results, and most importantly impact positive changes around them.

Mindset is the new buzzword you hear in every conversation be it in the professional world or in personal interactions. It seems that people have realized that without a proper mindset, attempts to change and develop oneself and others by improving behavior alone can produce marginal improvements and make very little difference. The problem with that is that, although behaviors drive results, mindset actually drives behaviors. Shifting Mindsets exposes blame and self-justification, creates awareness on one’s own responsibility in any given situation and sheds the light on the different driving mindset and what one needs to do to become happier, more at peace, have better relationships and achieve better results. An outward mindset implies a heart at peace and seeing things differently, people differently, even challenges and opportunities differently, and as we all know, we see others and life the way we are and not the way they are. Joelle will work with the participants over three sessions on the following: Session 1: Deep Responsibility - the source of influence and the problem we don’t see. Session 2: Impact - What does our Mindset invite in others - how do we fix it, invite more collaboration and resolve conflicts. Session 3: Influence - Helping Things go right - when others need to change. Number of sessions: three Dates: Fridays, October 14, 28 and November 11 Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 noon Capacity: 20

In this workshop, he is going to introduce the basics of design thinking as a method of creative action and the process for problem-solving. Unlike analytical thinking, “design thinking” includes "building up" ideas, with few, or no, limits on breadth during a "brainstorming" phase. This helps reduce fear of failure in the participant(s) and encourages input and participation from a wide

18, but still his favorite entertainment is spending time in the old bazaar, built in Safavid period, which is quite functioning as the city’s key marketplace. Every time going there, he gets mesmerized by structural and aesthetical design components of the walls, vaulted ceilings, and domes which always make him think about the reasoning behind the design. He pursued his design interests through interdisciplinary academic design programs and currently teaches at the Department of Landscape Architecture, at AUB. Prior to this position, he taught several lectures, seminars, workshops, and studio courses at UC Berkeley, North Dakota State University and Washington State University.

variety of sources in the ideation phases. During this workshop, we apply a common version of the design thinking process with the following stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, Choose, and implement.

Also leading the work on the digital preservation framework that will ensure long term access and retrieval of AUB University Libraries digital assets.

This workshop will begin with an introduction to personal digital preservation on how to ensure long term access to our digital information despite the rapid changes in the digital world. In contrast to our physical resources, such as books, photos and others, that are still readable today, digital information created only a few years ago is in danger of being lost. The four sessions will offer hands-on training on scanning your personal photos and documents, reformatting outdated media type and presenting best practices on how to manage your personal digital videos, audios, website, social media and others. Number of sessions: four Dates: Fridays, October 14, 21, 28 and November 4 Time: 3:30 – 5:00 pm Capacity: 12

19) Introduction to digital photography

Jirji Bachir Jirji is an amateur photographer for more than 40 years. He graduated with a BA in Mass Communications from AUB in 1974 where he was the president

of the Photography club for two years and winner of the “most photogenic girl contest.” He worked as student reporter/photographer for An-Nahar for three years then went into a lifelong career in the oil industry in Abu Dhabi from Officer to Executive Director. Jirji retired in 2010 and is now living in Beirut.

The ease and low cost of digital photography have led all generations to try their hands and eyes to record lovely moments, occasions and scenery all over the world. Mobile phones with cameras (some with good resolution) have made a photographer of every person at any time. This study group will concentrate on basic functions of the camera (film and digital), proper use of cameras, light, composition, events photography…etc:

Amani Zaidan A member in AUB’s University for Seniors team since its start in 2009, Amani holds a degree in Environmental Sciences from AUB.

Technology has always been her passion and a big part of her every-day life. She spends her free time exploring and if possible experimenting with the small gadgets that are changing our world. Amani has been leading this study group since Fall 2013.

Smartphones became one of the most important communication and multimedia tools in our daily life. Due to its advanced features and applications, a smartphone is far more capable than a regular phone. It has the ability to send live images, video call people who are far and always keep its user connected to what is going on in the world. The members will be introduced to the basic functions of an iPhone by getting to learn about their phone settings, its utilities (calendar, notes, reminders…) and images’ settings and sharing. This class is hands-on; therefore, participants will be able to apply all the various techniques directly on their iPhones. Class is restricted to phones operating on iOS 9. If you have any questions, please send an email to [email protected]. Sawsan Maktabi Sawsan holds an MA degree in English Literature. She is currently an Instructor of Composition and Rhetoric in the English Department at AUB

since 1986. She is an active participant and leader in several book clubs in both Arabic and English languages. She is also an active member in several NGOs, social and academic committees. Sawsan is married to Youssef Maktabi, mother of Hadi Maktabi, and grandmother of Donia, Youssef and Heydar Maktabi.

"I’m not comfortable giving interpretations of my work. If I were to provide one, it would become the definitive interpretation, inhibiting readers from finding their own meanings", (Margaret Atwood, the famous twentieth century Canadian literary figure). It is true that an author may exert full power over plot and characters, but such a control is hard to achieve over readers. Since words do not confine themselves to a single meaning, it is interesting to share ideas and comments through a book club where the reader feels free to derive meanings and interpretations and compare them with those of other readers. In a relaxed atmosphere, discussion will be led and managed by the group facilitator and all participants are given the chance of voicing their comments and interpretations.

Two books will be read throughout the term:

1. The Stranger by Albert Camus

“Since it was first published, The Stranger has had a profound impact on millions of readers. Through this story of an ordinary man who unwittingly gets drawn into a senseless murder on a sundrenched Algerian beach, Camus explored what he termed ‘the nakedness of man faced with the absurd.’ This haunting novel has become a classic for generations to come.”

2. The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif

“Spanning three continents and the course of a century,

The Map of Love traces a transcendent cross-cultural love affair back to its dramatic precursor generations earlier… Combining the romance and intricate narrative of a nineteenth-century novel with a very modern sense of culture and politics—both sexual and international—Ahdaf Soueif has created a thoroughly seductive and mesmerizing tale.” Number of sessions: two Dates: Monday October 17 and Monday November 28 Time: 3:30 – 5:00 pm Capacity: 25

Modern lifestyle with its stress, lack of physical activity, inappropriate sleep patterns, and unhealthy nutrition has led to many of the physical and mental disorders people suffer from these days. The practice of Karate Do helps mitigate the effects of these risk factors. It can improve muscle power, balance, proprioception, coordination, flexibility, breathing, concentration, and psychological endurance. Karate is a Japanese martial art that strengthens the mind and body, originally designed for self-defense without using any weapon. Nowadays Karate is widely spread as a competitive sport, a mean for effective self-defense, and a discipline for the mind and body. The beauty of Karate lies in its ability to adapt to the individuals regardless of their age, physical, or mental abilities. In this study group, participants will have an introduction to some of the basic Karate techniques, which can be practiced at home or followed up later by formal training.

31) UfS hike: Qadisha Valley

Sami Beydoun Sami is currently the co-founder and managing partner of Berytech fund, a venture capital financial institution that invests in Lebanese start-up technology

companies. Hiking is Sami’s passion since early age, and he pursues it every weekend on a regular basis all year round. He hiked most Lebanese regions and has an intimate knowledge of many unmarked trails where natural beauty meets with peace and serenity. He also hiked extensively in the French, Swiss, Italian, and Austrian Alps, as well as some trails in the US. Sami is an avid skier. He was a member of the Lebanese national ski team, and skied for Lebanon at the 1964 winter Olympic games held in Innsbruck, Austria.

The Qadisha valley is about 110km North of Beirut. It is known as the holy valley, and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

It contains two sections: the Qannoubine valley and the Qozhaya valley both with many monasteries and hermits abodes. They are connected with walking trails, starting at an altitude of 1,000m, and going up to 1,500m.

We will hike in the valley of Qannoubine, where we will visit the monastery. The valley has a vegetation of pine and oak trees. The Qadisha river runs through it, to end in Tripoli under the name of Nahr Abou Ali.

We will hike for a total of four hours, at a moderate pace, including many short breaks to admire the views and take pictures, plus a picnic lunch.

The trail is very well maintained, though part of it is rugged and requires proper walking shoes (preferably hiking boots and poles). There will be moderate uphill and downhill which should cause no problems for ordinary fit participants.

Participants must be physically fit to walk four hours (sometimes uphill and downhill), preferably having previously hiked, and with no health problems that might hinder their walk.

What to bring: Proper hiking shoes, hat, sun glasses, sun cream, light jacket or wind breaker, camera, snacks, picnic lunch, one liter of water, a back pack to carry them, walking poles if available.

Between 1946 and 1949 I was Director of the Arab Office in Washington set up to promote the Palestinian cause. After leaving Tunisia in 1967 I have been variously consultant, journalist, and free-lance writer until the present time.

I will talk briefly of what I consider to have been to me the most interesting periods of my life. I will also try to describe the role played by AUB in forming my identity as a British-born Lebanese through my father's role as an AUB graduate in 1890.
