ABOUT UFM NONCREDIT CLASSES

UFM adheres to the philosophy that everyone can learn and everyone can teach. UFM is a community learning program which contracts with nonprofessional community instructors. Consequently, we cannot guarantee that the courses offered are accurate or complete in content and quality of instruction. We rely on the credentials provided by instructors, class observation, and participant feedback as tools for evaluating a class and an instructor’s ability.

UFM classes are not a forum for selling a product or service from which the instructor might benefit. Materials specifically oriented to an instructor’s financial interests are not to be distributed in class. Participants who wish to pursue a relationship with an instructor outside class time do so on their own responsibility. Please share any concerns you may have about class material or an instructor by calling Kayla at (785) 539-8763.

UFM CANCELLATION POLICYWhen we cancel or reschedule a class, you will be notified. Therefore, it is extremely important that we have a daytime and evening phone number and/or email address where we may reach you or leave a message. We reserve the right to cancel any class.

REFUND POLICYWe will provide a full refund if a class is canceled by UFM. If a student withdraws from a class 48 hours or more before the class begins, a full refund may be given, except for any published non-refundable fees. No refunds will be given once a class has started.

DISCLAIMERUFM Community Learning Center serves as a forum to bring together people who want to share their personal ideas and/or learn skills in a variety of areas. UFM, its staff, and its board of directors do not endorse any particular viewpoint or philosophy presented in classes, activities, or events included in any UFM publication.

NONDISCRIMINATION POLICYUFM Community Learning Center is committed to nondiscrimination on the basis of race, gender, national origin, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, political beliefs, or other non-merit reasons, in admissions, educational programs, or activities and employment (including employment of disabled veterans and veterans of the Vietnam Era) as required by applicable laws and regulations. Students under age 18 need the permission of a parent or guardian to participate in a class. Some individual classes may have age restrictions or may require instructor permission. Please call (785) 539-8763 to make arrangements for classroom accessibility.

DONATIONSDonations help underwrite the costs of maintaining the UFM building, coordinating the catalog of classes, and special projects such as scholarships, youth projects, or gardening. Tax deductible contributions may be sent to UFM at 1221 Thurston St., Manhattan, KS, 66502.

SPECIAL ASSISTANCEA participant with a disability who needs accommodations in a UFM program should indicate this at the time of registration.

Limited scholarships are available for adults and children who qualify for established income guidelines.

KSU CREDIT COURSES

CREDIT CLASS ENROLLMENT K-State students enroll through KSIS. For credit enrollment questions, contact Samantha or Charlene at UFM at (785) 539-8763.

CREDIT ENROLLMENT FEESCourses taken for credit carry additional fees required for University administration of the credit program. A one-time $65.00 late fee will be charged for enrollments beginning on the first day of classes if this is your first enrollment at K-State for the semester. Additional campus privilege fees may be assessed for students enrolled in 6 or fewer K-State credit hours. There is a non-refundable material fee for withdrawing from some classes after the first day. Class fees listed are for full-time resident students.

CREDIT CLASS REFUNDS AND WITHDRAWALSTuition refunds are calculated based on the number of calendar days in the class. You may be eligible for a full or partial refund of tuition if you choose to drop your class before a certain date. Please refer to the full withdrawal and refund policy at http://global.k-state.edu/courses/registration/policies-withdrawal or visit http://courses.k-state.edu/spring2019/information/deadlines.html

DROP POLICYAll drop deadlines are calculated based on the number of calendar days in the class. The following policies apply: a student may drop a class prior to 33% of the class duration without a grade being recorded on the student’s transcript; if a student drops after 33% but before 62% of the class duration, a grade of W will be issued. No drops will be accepted after 62% of the course duration. Failure to drop a class may result in a failing grade. For more information visit http://courses.k-state.edu/spring2019/information/deadlines.html

STUDENT ACCESS CENTERA student with a disability who wishes to request accommodations for a credit course should notify the course instructor or contact the Disability Support Services office: http://www.k-state.edu/accesscenter/, (785) 532-6441, or [email protected]. Early notification is requested to ensure that accommodations can be provided in a timely manner.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICYUFM courses held on campus follow the inclement weather policy of Kansas State University. Courses will be conducted unless all University courses are cancelled. If the instructor informs his or her students personally that he or she will not be present at a given class meeting, the instructor is then responsible for arranging a make-up lesson.

LIABILITY STATEMENTIndividual participants should be aware of the risks and hazards involved in recreational sports and fitness activities. They should voluntarily elect to utilize KSU and UFM facilities and participate in programs recognizing present conditions and further agree to voluntarily assume all risks of loss, damage or injury that may be sustained while using KSU or UFM facilities or participating in programs. K-State Global Campus/UFM assumes no responsibility for costs involved with individual injury or property loss incurred in connection with the use of University or UFM facilities. Individuals are reminded that they should review their own personal circumstances to determine if they have adequate insurance or protection in case of injury resulting from the use of University facilities or participation in programs. It is recommended that all participants have a complete physical before engaging in any physical recreation program.

LEARN TO SWIM CLASSESUFM proudly offers the American Red Cross Swim Lessons Levels I-VI, Parent and Child, and Preschool I & II. UFM also offers private lessons and adult swim classes.

Water safety is reinforced with tips and practice each class. On the first day of class, each student is evaluated to assure that they are in the proper level. Students advance through the levels at their own rate and are moved to different class levels as space permits and skill advancement demands.

LOCATION: KSU Natatorium - Ahearn Complex on Denison Avenue

Lockers are available for use during class. Participants must supply towels and swimsuits. Changing tables are available in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

PARKING:Please take note of all parking signs around the Natatorium. UFM is not responsible for parking tickets. Weekdays after 5 PM and on weekends, free parking is available in the K-State parking lot on Denison Avenue across the street west of the Natatorium, or on side streets. The parking garage located by the K-State Student Union is also available at $1.50/hour. For more K-State visitor information, call (785) 532-7275 or visit www.k-state.edu/parking/visitor.html.

SWIM PROGRAM MAKE-UP AND REFUND POLICY:When a class is canceled due to severe weather or other circumstances when a lesson cannot be provided by UFM, a make-up class will be scheduled OR a refund will be issued in the amount of the missed lesson.

When class participants are absent from class, UFM will not issue a refund or make-up session due to staff availability, budgeting, and scheduling constraints.

NOTE: Minimum enrollment for all classes is 4. If less than 4 enroll, classes may be combined, changed to private or semi-private lessons, or canceled.

SPRING SWIMENROLLMENT PROCESS!

We are again implementing a staggered enrollment process this semester in an effort to improve the registration process. This is an attempt to alleviate the high traffic and overload of our registration system.

Please note: UFM has limited use of the K-State Natatorium and we strive to offer the maximum number of lessons possible during our assigned pool use times. There is typically very high demand for private swimming lessons. The number of spots in private lessons is extremely limited -- sometimes only 1 or 2 spots in each time slot. The number of private swim lessons we are able to offer is based on the number of swim instructors who apply and are hired.

Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. Once opened, classes remain available for registration until full. If a class is full, please add your student’s name to the waitlist online. As swim staff become available, spots will be offered to waitlisted students in the order in which they were received. All classes are dependent on staff availability and are subject to change.

Please refer to the schedule below when planning your enrollment.

Larry has been kayaking the waters of Kansas for 19 years, focusing exclusively on touring/sea kayaks and what they can do in all types of water conditions. He has a specialized knowledge and skill base for this part of Kansas and is eager to share it with others who are wanting to expand their skills to the next level. Touring kayaks are amazing vessels that can get to places where many other watercraft cannot reach, allowing you access to new sights. Seeing the world from the cockpit of a kayak can be a magical experience.

Larry believes that the more skills you have — which include propelling your kayak efficiently, maneuvering your kayak with ease, and being able to rescue yourself and others — the more you are able to relax and safely enjoy your amazing surroundings. When you are paddling a touring kayak, you are traveling along at about 3-4 miles per hour, about the pace of a brisk walk, which allows you to observe your environment and take in the beauty of native plants and migrating waterfowl (such as cormorants, American white pelicans, American coots, pied-billed grebes, and more). At this pace you can also enjoy the company and conversation of a friend.

Building confidence by practicing and paddling, the freedom of propelling through the water with ease, and spending quality time with friends and family are just some of the things that have kept Larry so energized and excited about kayaking. Larry is always ready to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with anyone who wants to give touring/sea kayaking a go.

Piecing it Together - Learn to Create A Mosaic 19ACF253The earliest known examples of mosaics were found at a temple in Mesopotamia and date to the second half of the third millennium BC. They consist of pieces of colored stones, shells, and ivory. While materials may have changed some, the concepts and procedures are relatively unchanged. Mosaics are created with any number of random items including glass, ceramic, and porcelain. In this class, you will learn about the different tesserae used to create a mosaic and how to cut glass (the glass you use for your mosaic in this class will already be cut). You’ll also learn a wealth of tips and tricks to make creating your own mosaics at home. The design you use for this one will be simple, and you will have a choice of several options. In the morning session of the class, you’ll design the mosaic (roughly 9 square inches). We’ll take an hour for lunch, which will give the adhesive time to dry. After lunch you will apply the grout. You will be given a small spray bottle of grout sealer to take home with you to seal your mosaic 48 to 72 hours later. Ages 16+.Instructor: Gail Parsons DATE TIME FEE

Abstract Painting Series:Working in abstract unleashes creativity. However, artists often find abstract difficult because they are accustomed to recreating exactly what they see. They can take a photograph and duplicate it to the finest detail but given the opportunity to be creative - they shut down. Abstract, on the other hand, is open to interpretation and commands an open mind from the artist, which is why so many artists often hesitate to delve into it. When you paint abstract, you are not painting something that will jump out and say “this is what I am;” rather you are painting an emotion. Possibly one of the biggest misunderstandings about abstract is that it is simply paint flung haphazardly onto a canvas. While it may look effortless, abstract is not that simple. In this class, you will learn how to employ color, texture, harmony, and balance to create abstract paintings that draw a viewer in, yet at the same time makes them think and elicit an emotional response. There are several ways to approach an abstract. In this series of classes, we will start each session with a discussion about elements, composition, and technique, and then we’ll use those discussion points to paint in a different abstract style each week. All materials will be provided, however if you have your own favorite brushes, palette knife, or other painting equipment that you are comfortable with, please feel free to bring it. Get ready to unleash your creative spirit! Each of the four classes this semester will focus on color. Ages 16+.Instructor: Gail ParsonsLocation: UFM Banquet Room 1221 Thurston St.

Permaculture Guilds 19AEN138Permaculture is based on natural systems like those that we see in forests. In a forest system, there are multiple layers of vegetation growing together in a very diverse setting. We see many types of trees, shrubs, plants, insects, animals, and various other things all living together in a system that continually strengthens itself. All of these components of a natural ecosystem serve a function (or several functions) that support each other like the strands of a web. In this class, we will explore how using guilds in your yard and garden can increase productivity.Instructor: Carol Barta, (785) 410-8608 DATE TIME FEE

Growing Daylilies for Beginners 19AEN143Daylilies are rugged, adaptable, vigorous perennials that endure in a garden for many years. Daylilies adapt to a wide range of soil and light conditions. They establish quickly and survive winters with little or no injury. While each bloom lasts only one day, hence the name, their multiple blooms last for many weeks, making a striking show of bright colors in the garden landscape. Daylilies are major attractors to the many beneficial insects and hummingbirds that seek out the nectar these plants provide. Once established, daylilies require little care and provide a dramatic backdrop for annuals and other plants season after season. This class will demonstrate that even amateur gardeners can have a show of daylilies among their plantings. It will cover things you need to know about soil, optimal planting locations, and how to take care of daylilies long-term. The course will be taught by members of the Flint Hills Daylily Society. Political Civility 19API181Politics have become incredibly messy and toxic. Many withhold sharing their opinions out of fear of being judged, and we struggle to find reliable news amid this polarization. In this class, we restore the civility and deliberation that the founding fathers recognized as being essential for our democracy. We will examine the causes of polarization, practice political civility, and examine what people on either side believe. This is a class for anyone interested in American politics and making a difference.

We Do This for a Living: Tips and Tricks from Decision Scientists 19API180How well do you know the reasons behind your decisions? You probably believe that your decisions are well-constructed and based on facts. Drop-in to any of the classes in our four-part series to learn about how unconscious biases and cognitive limitations affect our decision-making in different real-world contexts: what we buy, how we choose our healthcare, how quickly we save our money, and why we play the lottery or gamble. Each workshop will involve a discussion of what makes an optimal decision, barriers that prevent people from making these decisions, and research-motivated techniques to improve our day-to-day decision-making.

Instructors: Lisa Vangsness, [email protected] & Kevin Kenney, [email protected] Lisa Vangsness, M.S., is a PhD candidate at Kansas State University. Her research program determines how our beliefs about difficulty affect our decisions to invest effort and complete tasks. She studies these phenomena in a variety of contexts including visual search, academic procrastination, and videogame play.

Kevin Kenney, M.S., is a PhD student at Kansas State University. His research program examines the factors that influence risk-taking and investment decisions across different contexts. Recent research topics include selecting an appropriate route to arrive at an event on time, job selection based on salary and approximate chances of receiving an offer, and factors that influence decisions to have children. Board Games for Beginners 19API182There has been a renaissance in board games in the past 20 years, with world-renowned designers creating beautiful puzzles, breathing new life into history and geography, and games where players can cooperate or compete, sometimes all out of the same box. This class will introduce you to the new paradigm in board games in a way that beginners can appreciate, without pressure to become an expert immediately and just enjoy how a game unfolds. Once you learn this approach, new games and new gaming groups are easy to incorporate into your own social gatherings. You can also add a new and enjoyable layer to casual get-togethers, and ideally, gain the confidence to go out and join new groups.

Instructor: Daniel Ireton, Daniel is an Associate Professor at Kansas State University Libraries, spending most of his days teaching best practices for library resources and providing research consultations for students and faculty. He also occasionally presents or publishes some of his research in games in education and designs some games of his own. When not researching or playing board games, you might find him sword fighting in the park or just relaxing at home with his family. DATE TIME FEE

America’s Forgotten WarsPresented by Robert Smith, Ph.D.

Wednesdays, Feb. 13, 20 & 27 • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan

America’s Forgotten Wars examines three overlooked and little remembered conflicts in our nation’s history. The first class will focus on the undeclared 1798-1800 Quasi War with France. The second class will examine America’s and the Navy’s second serious conflict; the war against the Barbary States, 1801-1805. The third, and last, class focuses on the Spanish-American War, an eleven-month war with Spain that ushered in America’s move from being a continental to an international power. The war with Spain is notable in that it created a national hero of Theodore Roosevelt and his volunteer “Rough Riders.”

American Regionalism: Art from the HeartlandPresented by Dan Kirchhefer

Wednesdays, March 20, 27, & April 3 • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan

The three most noted artists of American Regionalism will be the focus of this class: Thomas Hart Benton from Missouri, John Steuart Curry from Kansas, and Grant Wood from Iowa. How did these artists, with their anti-modernist tendencies take on European abstract art and form a significant, if not major, American art movement? Their major works will be examined along with the influences of their home states and region, an area that most in the class call home.

Kansas Characters: From the Scandalous to Benevolent

Presented by Thomas Luellen Wednesdays, April 10, 17 & 24 • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan

Images of Kansas range from the moral heartland where Superman was raised to Bleeding Kansas where neighbors took up arms against neighbors. This course will examine several notable Kansans within that range of images. First will be The Notorious--John Brown, the abolitionist or terrorist and Dr. John R. Brinkley, the infamous goat gland doctor. Then we’ll review The Self-Righteous--Carrie Nation and the Temperance Movement and Vern Miller, the Kansas Attorney General who sought to prohibit airlines from serving drinks while flying over “dry” Kansas. Finally, will be The Innovators--Karl Menninger and his famous psychiatric clinic and Bill James, godfather of a new generation of baseball statistics.

Westward Ho!! Trails west in Kansas and Beyond Presented by Russ Hutchins

Thursdays, April 11, 18 & 25 • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan

From manifest destiny and westward expansion, the emigrant migration from the east coast to the west coast is a story that made this country a nation. We will explore the Oregon, California, Santa Fe pioneer trails that made their way across Kansas and further westward. We will examine the Butterfield Overland Stage line and others that opened Kansas and the western territories to settlement. The program will examine the hardships, adventures, endeavors, and inventions that helped the pioneers travel west. We will see how the trails west lead to the conflict with the Native American peoples, the Spanish, Mexican and British governments that also had strong claim and interest in the American West. Come and join us as we travel and see some of the remains of the old trail by video and photo.

Poetry, Sense of Place & the Prairie: Reading & Writing Our Way Home

Presented by Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Ph.D. Thursdays, May 2, 9 & 16 • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Meadowlark Hills Community Room - Manhattan

Kansas poets have long helped us fully see our home in the earth and sky, the tall grass prairies of the eastern part of our state and rock formations in the west. We’ll draw from many Kansas writers, including William Stafford, Denise Low, Harley Elliott, Jonathan Holden, Elizabeth Dodd, Brian Daldorph and Gordon Parks, investigating what these writers show us about where we live. We’ll also discuss and write about (in short, easy exercises) how sense of place informs how we live and who we are. (Please bring a journal or notebook.)

Teen Mentoring!

To apply or for more information about the mentoring program, visit www.tryufm.org or email [email protected]

The UFM Teen Mentoring program is designed to create an environment

that is safe, supportive and healthy for the teenagers involved. Available to

middle school and high school students, students and mentors play games,

participate in off-site activities and talk about topics that are relevant to

today's teenagers. Some of the topics are difficult to talk about in a school or

other social setting such as drug use, self-harm, or having suicidal thoughts.

Others are easier discussions, such as respect, depression or anxiety. At

UFM, we hope to create an environment where all middle school and high

school participants can be real about who they are and what's going on in

their world. Our desire is to offer friendship and to be a positive resource as

teenagers navigate the confusing path of adolescence and school.
