I would advise a classic knee-length shift dress in a bold colour. If you have a slim figure then opt for a bodycon shape, as this will make you look glamorous and youthful, definitely not frumpy.

ChiLDren’s heaLTh: EyE Examinations

ideally, all children should start having their eyes tested from the age of 3,

or earlier if you think that there may be a problem. although they may not be able to read an eye chart, there are lots of ways that experienced opticians can examine the eyes of young children and babies so it’s never too early. Children’s vision continues to develop until the age of 7, so testing in their early years is vital. Many schools no longer carry out routine eye examinations so you should look out for any signs of pooreyesight. research shows that one in five school-aged children

have an undetected eye problem. as a result many cannot see well enough to reach their full academic potential. They may also find it difficult to enjoy everyday childhood activities. Children who are short-sighted may have problems at school if they can’t see the board clearly. Those who are long-sighted may have problems focussing on books or computer screens.

Undetected sight issUes in children also have the potential to caUse problems with their schoolwork and concentration levels.

Because children don’t know what “normal” vision is, quite often they are unaware that they have a problem with their eyes and therefore may not complain of poor vision. Typical warning signs of problems are excessive blinking, squinting, peering closely at books or TV, and poor performance at school. however some problems don’t cause any obvious symptoms and can go undetected if you don’t have your child’s eyes tested. it is also important to establish that your child does not have a lazy eye or squint from an early age. Treatment for this is most successful if started very young, so regular testing

will ensure that your optician can

correct this problem.

we all want the best for oUr children and the health of their eyes can have a big impact on their day to day lives. that’s why it’s important for them to have regular eye examinations, jUst as yoU do.

another sight defect which should be tested for at the earliest opportunity is colour vision deficiency (colour blindness). This may affect career choices in later life and making your child’s teacher aware of the condition means that they can make allowances in the classroom. Many eyesight defects can be inherited and so if there is a history of eye problems in your family it is doubly important to have your child’s eyes examined on a regular basis. The nhs pays for sight tests for children under the age of 16, and if your child does need glasses, the nhs will also give you a voucher towards the cost of spectacles.

Unlike ten or twenty years ago, there is a wide selection of kid’s frames available which look great and are dUrable enoUgh for little hands.

Ingredients: 125g hazelnuts 175g icing sugar 3 large egg whites 75g caster sugar raspberry butter Cream 100g frozen raspberries 250g icing sugar 125g butter – room temperature Method: n toast the hazelnuts in the oven for 10 minutes, cool and blend until they are fine crumbs, mix with the icing sugar. n Whisk the egg whites until stiff, add the caster sugar and whisk for a count of 4. n Fold in the nuts/icing sugar and spoon the mix into a piping bag. n Pipe walnut size pieces for mini or 50p size pieces for larger. n tap the baking sheet on the work surface 2-3 times – this will give the macaroon the little ‘foot’ n Allow to dry out for 20 minutes before baking uncovered for 15 minutes. Cool before filling. n For the filling, sieve the raspberries and add to 100g of the icing sugar. n Beat the butter and remaining icing sugar together to form butter cream and add the raspberry purée a little at a time to prevent it curdling.

My childhood memories are full of fabulous

food. My mother baking endless rows of chocolate coated biscuits or fruit loaves for a fete, chasing us round the house with a raw whole salmon waiting to be cooked for a dinner party or even eating exotic food for supper knowing my friends were eating fish fingers! Not that we lived decadently – my Mum just loved trying new things and her Cordon Bleu Cookery pamphlet arrived on our door mat each month. Clearing her house out this summer, I have inherited her cookery notebooks – starting in 1954 when she married and going all the way through to the mid-90s. Not just recipes scribbled down but cuttings

from newspapers with her comments – like VVG (this was code for very very good!) or ‘needs more liquid’. It all makes for fascinating reading and I am gradually working my way through the recipes. One of my Mum’s favourite dinner party successes was hazelnut meringue gateau – three layers of chewy cake shaped meringue made with ground hazelnuts layered with lashings of cream and fresh raspberries, served with the most incredible raspberry coulis. The combination of hazelnuts, meringue and raspberries is sublime but the pudding itself is somewhat dated so I’ve brought it bang up to date in my hazelnut and raspberry macaroons. I think Mum would be thrilled to know her recipe lives on.

Marco Pierre White is in the passenger seat, a mobile

phone almost glued to his right ear, while his Japanese assistant Mr ishii sits behind the wheel. They say that behind every great man is a great woman, though the chef-turned restaurateur and hotelier has been thrice married. Behind this Great White (as he is known in the restaurant world) there is his devoted assistant, takanori ishii. “The people i trust most in this world,” says White, “are myself and Mr ishii. i call him Mr ishii because of my incredible respect for him.” at the age of 33, White was Britain’s first chef - and the world’s youngest - to win three Michelin stars. yet he officially retired from the kitchen in 1999 – he left the exhausting and gritty daily

madness of professional cuisine - and these days he has mellowed. When you’re with him, he is something of a philosopher. During the course of our journey he exclaims “The poisonous sauce in the kitchen is the chef ’s ego” and as we whizz past a forest, the sight prompts him to say, “a tree without roots is just a piece of wood.” Then there is “gastronomy is the greatest therapy to which any misfit can be exposed”. i ask him why he believes that? “Well, going back a few years i was certainly a misfit,” he says. “as a teenager, i was a shy person, didn’t have girlfriends. i didn’t even sit my o levels – just turned up at the hotel st George in harrogate and asked if they needed a kitchen apprentice. if i can do one thing then it

is to inspire young people to take up cooking because i have seen how it can change people’s lives for the better.

in suffolk he has the angel in lavenham, a 15th century inn; in Thornham, norfolk, he has the lifeboat inn. “it’s all about comfort food,” he says. “Wonderful smoked salmon and crab, roast game or the perfect shepherd’s pie, maybe Cambridge burnt cream or eton Mess to finish. nothing too fussy – just honest,

proper food, and it can’t be honest if the ingredients aren’t good to start with.” Meanwhile, he is producing his own beer and cider called The Governor. “i’ve never been a big drinker,” he says, “but i do love a pint.” he has also been buying elsewhere. in the Cotswolds he has the Pear tree inn, the horse and Groom, and the Black Boy inn. Meanwhile, the stars of Downton abbey stay at the Carnarvon arms, White’s inn in newbury, Berkshire. What drives him on, what propels him through life? “i want security for my children, lettie, luciano, Marco and Mirabelle.” But surely he has amassed a vast fortune, and could retire tomorrow (or even today)? “What would i do with myself?” he says. “i’d be

and there’s a great rush to be had from service.” We are at the Angel now and White wants to check progress in the kitchen but before he dashes off, I am curious: how would he like to be remembered? he scowls. “I don’t want to be remembered. I can’t imagine anything worse!”

“I want security for my children, Lettie, Luciano, Marco and Mirabelle.” But surely he has amassed a vast fortune, and could retire tomorrow (or even today)? “

an unforgettable depiction of the psychological

impact of war by a young iraq veteran and poet, The yellow Birds is already being hailed as a modern classic. everywhere John looks, he sees Murph. he flinches when cars drive past. his fingers clasp around the rifle he hasn’t held for months. Wide-eyed strangers praise him as a hero, but he can feel himself disappearing. Back home in the us after a year

in iraq, memories swarm around him including the promise he made to a young man’s mother that her son would be brought home safely. With this book, poet and veteran Kevin Powers has composed an unforgettable account of friendship and loss. it vividly captures the desperation and brutality of war, and its

reactions to Burton’s last film Dark shadows were

somewhat muted – was he capable of making a film without Johnny Depp or helena Bonham Carter? What a relief then that his next project sees him back to doing what he does best – utterly imaginative stop-motion animation. reminiscent of The nightmare before Christmas and Burton’s previous directorial outing Corpse Bride, the story follows young Victor who decides to use the power of science to bring his dog “sparky” back to life. Chock-full of references to universal horror films and the famous ‘creature-

features’ of the 30s and 40s, it also echoes last year’s hugo as a celebration of cinema. Burton has always walked a thin-line between kooky and downright terrifying – what keeps this work just on the right side of creepy is its warmth and

Known for a pensive, ambient sound rife with delicate

synthesisers and whimsy vocals, The xx’s Coexist is familiarly unfamiliar in comparison to 2009’s self-titled debut xx. The grandiose yet simplistic

guitars cut through the middle of the low-end bass and ethereal high-end bliss; crooned, hazy vocals add to the dream-like atmosphere; veiled steel drums exuberance Jamie xx’s influence on the accompanying music, especially on tracks like reunion; and euphoric pulsations in the music give it an intoxicative quality. The music incorporates features from different elements of music to spur diversity without breaking the mould. reunion incorporates a throbbing pulse and steel drums, whilst Sunset’s bass-heavy drum sample suggests the hedonism of the 90’s club scene,

albeit at a more relaxed pace. tides introduces complimentary violins that scrawl along above the revolving bass line. It’s interesting to note, however, that whilst each song is interesting and different to those around it, none stand out against the others. The album seems to be enjoyed best as one pensive piece, strangely diverse yet unified. Whilst not a happy listen, there is something brightening in the dark, emotional depths of the reverb that gives the entire album a haunting glow.

This month we met with Matt Lawson, 1st Team nutritionist

& Community Officer at notts County FC. he has also coached Team GB Paralympians and notts County Ladies.

What did you do to become

qualified in nutrition and dietetics? a lot of hard work! at school i had a passion for science, mainly Biology and Chemistry which i went onto study further at the University of nottingham. after deciding to focus on the human body and nutrition, i completed a Master of nutrition qualification with training as a hospital Dietitian.

hoW did you come to Work at notts

being in the right place at the right time!

Give us an example of your

typical Work day? There is a huge amount of variation, every day is different! One day you might be working with the coaches and players on the training pitch advising on nutrition and hydration, and the next in a primary school. We run a lot of great community schemes, ‘school of the Week’ and ‘a Game of Two halves’ are the ones i’m particularly passionate about. We have won awards for both at national level.

What do you like best about your

Work? Our supporters are great; they keep the Club going and are united in their love for notts County. We have

a club charity called Lifeline that does brilliant work. Over 2,000 supporters have signed up. Giving £2 a week really makes a difference.

What advice do you Give to

the notts county players that our readers miGht benefit from? eat breakfast and then eat something regularly every 2-3 hours. aim to have 9 portions of fruit and vegetables per day and drink at least 2 litres of water. also try to get back to the traditional cooked meal in the evenings. This was commonplace in the UK before convenience food came over from america and the obesity boom started. We recommend splitting the plate into three: 1/3 brown carbohydrates – slow release energy foods; 1/3 lean proteins – repairing foods; 1/3 fruit and vegetables – protection foods.

Was it different WorkinG With

team Gb athletes at olympic level? i treat every athlete equally, whatever the level. But of course it was nice to see how someone prepares to win a Gold medal and contributing to that was a real honour. having involvement in the London 2012 Olympics is the proudest moment of my career so far.

With some cars it is very easy and can be governed

by family size, lifestyle, work needs or how style conscious they might be. This is all before we start considering price. The hyundai Veloster had me in a quandary until I drove it. The sleek coupe

design has features that are common with the rest of the hyundai range of cars and picks up on subtle details, both inside and out. Over the years, hyundai has consistently offered a coupe with eye catching designs that always stood apart from the competition. The Veloster is no exception and acts as a showcase to the engineering talent that hyundai possesses. The most obvious feature of this car is the unique door layout; one large door on one side, in this case the driver’s side and 2 doors

on the other side. hardly unique you might think as there are other cars offering this feature but the key point here is that the same applies irrespective of which “hand drive” the car is built as. So a Veloster sold in any country that drives on the right, will have one door on the driver’s side and 2 on the passenger’s. This means rear seat passengers can alight from the car onto the safety of the pavement. This one feature showcases the depth of engineering and resourcefulness that hyundai can tap into. It probably

but it does show how serious hyundai is about its cars. As for the car, in the Sport specification on test here, the equipment levels were excellent and also some nice style features such as subtly colour coded alloy wheels added to its overall appeal. A large hatchback rear door made taking bulky objects no problem and considering its swoopy styling, visibility was surprisingly good. The fit and finish was excellent with doors that had a good solid sound on closing. Also a large sunroof helped give the car a nice, airy feel. As for who is going to buy it, well that is my little secret. I want to see if I am any good at matching cars with people!

so, how much should you spend on marketing? here’s a

radical answer: nothing. Bet that’s got your attention! no, this isn’t about Facebook or twitter. Make no mistake, anything which takes up your valuable time has a cost. This is about changing your mindset. Because marketing is an investment. and an investment implies a return. an elegant logo, eye-catching advertising and engaging social media campaigns are all very well, but the bottom line is, we’re all in business to make money. and, as that bastion of business strategy, Del Boy trotter, might say, “you have to speculate to accumulate”. Well, quite. you should plan your marketing investment based on how much you plan to make. ah yes, plan.

We aLL KnoW We need a marKeting PLan, But do you have one? iF So, When WaS the LaSt time you reviSited it? revieWed it? reFined it? a marketing plan is a practical tool for prioritising what you do every day. it puts your marketing investment into the context of how much it will contribute to achieving your goal and prevents short-sighted, penny pinching decisions made on cost alone. so when you’re offered a full page ad in a publication at 75% off rate card, aside wondering why the space is so heavily discounted, your marketing plan is your go-to guide to discover whether

Don’t Waste your Money on mARkETINg you’re getting a genuine bargain or wasting your money. your friendly ad sales representative can (and should) tell you how many people read their publication, how it is distributed and how this is verified. if it will, go right ahead. With one caveat: be sure you know who your customer really is. Boots has invested heavily to understand that women buy flu remedies made for men. and invested even more to target said women with its Here Come The Girls campaign. Investors have two main objectives, firstly rental income to assist with

across England and Wales that the average monthly rental paid by tenants continues to increase but is this a good time to take out a buy to let loan and what are the benefits and risks involved?

Strong deMAnd for bUy to let There are good opportunities for existing landlords to add to their property portfolio or for new landlords to enter the buy to let market.

REnTaLS aRE RiSinG DUE To DEManD FRoM an inCREaSinG nUMBER oF TEnanTS WHo aRE UnaBLE To BUy PRoPERTy.

This may be due to job insecurity, inability to raise a sufficient deposit or for

overall affordability issues. In addition there is a good range of buy to let mortgages now available, with deposits around 25% being typically required. The overall return on the investment compares favourably, for the risks involved, with other assets and with bank base rate stuck at 0.5%. The economic environment is unlikely to change in the short term. Letting rather than buying is the preferred choice for a section of the population, for a range of reasons, and with fewer new properties being built than in more prosperous years, demand would appear to be sustainable.

wHAt Are tHe riSkS involved? The key risks around a buy to let investment are that

the tenant doesn’t pay or that the property cannot be let out. In addition property is not a readily marketable investment and a quick sale, at the required price, may not be possible in a short timeframe. At the present time, the level of arrears of both tenant rentals and landlord mortgage repayments are rising; this is leading to an increase in the number and percentage of buy to let cases being taken into possession. This reflects the difficult economic climate we are experiencing and shows that buy to let investments are not immune from repayment concerns. In addition, house prices are not rising and therefore landlords are not seeing a capital appreciation in their investment. The combination of lack of capital growth and increased tenant arrears may be discouraging investors at this time.

SUMMAry Buying to let is not a licence to print money. There are many risks involved in this long term investment and the choice and location of property are the key to a successful investment. As with many key decisions, timing is crucial, and there are good reasons for potential investors to enter the market over the next year, but buyers need to understand the risks involved.
