The European Aggregates Industry supports the principles of Sustainable Development. It is committed to operate

with care and concern for the environment, for its neighbours, for its employees and for society as a whole.

The UEPG Sustainable Development Awards illustrate this commitment by promoting the spread of best practice

and encouraging projects which go beyond what is required by planners or regulators. In this way, it is intended

that the Awards will provide examples which others can follow.

What are Aggregates?Aggregates are a granular material used inconstruction. The most common naturalaggregates of mineral origin are sand,gravel and crushed rock. An end-productin themselves such as railway ballast orarmourstones, aggregates are also a rawmaterial used in the manufacture of othervital construction products such as ready-mixed concrete (made of 80% aggregates),pre-cast products, asphalt (made of 95%aggregates), lime and cement.

Aggregates can be produced from naturalsources extracted from quarries andgravel pits and in some countries fromsea dredged materials (marine aggrega-tes). Secondary aggregates are usually by-products from other industrial processes,like blast or electric furnace slags orchina clay residues. Recycled aggregatesderive from reprocessing materialspreviously used in construction, includingconstruction and demolition residues andrailway ballast.

Aggregates can only be extracted wherenature has placed them. Careful planningis therefore needed in order to ensure thata proper balance is struck between socie-ty’s need for raw materials and the neces-sity to protect all that is best about ourenvironment. Due to the pressures fromland-planning on reserves and stricterenvironmental regulations, aggregateshave become more than ever a strategicraw material.

What are Aggregates used for?The main end-uses of aggregates are:

HomesThe construction of a typical new homeuses up to 100 tonnes of aggregates fromthe foundations through to the roof tiles.

Hospitals, schools and flood protectionFrom local hospitals and schools to bridgesand flood protection- all are made possi-ble by aggregates. In many cases theyprovide not just strength but, throughspecial finishes, architectural beauty. Theconstruction of a school requires 3000tonnes of aggregates. For a sports stadium,up to 300,000 tonnes are needed.

Transportation networkAggregates feature at all levels of construc-tion of the European transportationnetwork up to the road surface whichincludes aggregates resistant to polishing,ensuring skid-resistance and safer travel fordrivers. The construction of 1 km of motor-way requires 30,000 tonnes of aggregates.

Rail servicesAggregates are an essential foundation forEurope’s expanding high speed and regio-nal rail network.

What does the EuropeanAggregates Industry represent?The European Aggregates Industry is thelargest non-energy extractive sector in theEU with 2,800 million tons produced every

year. It consists of more than 27,000extraction sites across Europe and a majo-rity of operators in the sector are smalland medium sized enterprises. The averageannual aggregates production represents 7tons per EU citizen per year. The EuropeanAggregates Industry plays a key role byproviding essential materials for theEuropean construction sector. Take awayaggregates and our built environmentwould literally fall apart.

What is UEPG? UEPG stands for Union Européenne desProducteurs de Granulats (EuropeanAggregates Association). Since 1987, UEPGhas represented the interests of theEuropean Aggregates Industry by repre-senting its National Member Associationson economic, technical, environmentaland health & safety policy.

UEPG pro-actively identifies EU initiativesand policies that are likely to impact onEuropean aggregates producers. It providesMembers with brief and concise informa-tion through regular publications and ad-hoc updates, and ensures UEPG posi-tions are considered by EU decision-makers.UEPG positively promotes the profile of theEuropean Aggregates Industry.

What are the UEPG SustainableDevelopment Awards?The European Aggregates Industry iscommitted to operate with care andconcern for the environment, for itsneighbours, for its employees and forsociety as a whole. The UEPG SustainableDevelopment Awards illustrate thiscommitment by promoting the spread ofbest practice and encouraging projectswhich go beyond what is required by plan-ners or regulators. In this way, it is inten-ded that the Awards will provide exampleswhich others can follow. In 2005, 21entries from 10 countries have beenreceived.

Is it the first time that UEPG haslaunched an Award scheme?No. UEPG launched its first EuropeanRestoration Award scheme in 1997,which was followed by a second schemein 1999 and a third in 2001. On all threeoccasions, Member companies from 8nations received awards. The first andsecond official presentation ceremonies,with participation of Members of theEuropean Parliament, were held inStrasbourg, and the third took place inBrussels and was hosted by FrançoiseGrossetête, Member of the ParliamentaryEnvironment Committee. Building on thesuccess of this programme, it was decidedto enlarge the scope to all aspects ofsustainable development.

What does UEPG intend toachieve through thisprogramme?The first objective is to reward aggregatescompanies that have successfully integra-ted the social, economic and/or environ-mental dimensions of sustainabledevelopment into their operations byconcrete achievements beyond what isexpected, and to encourage the wholeindustry to reinforce its commitment tosustainable development. The secondobjective is to create a more positiveunderstanding and appreciation of the keyrole played by the European AggregatesIndustry, in order to ensure sustainableaccess to resources.

Under what conditions can acompany compete for an Award?1. Entry was open to companies which

were members of National Associations,which are Members of UEPG

2. Entries were limited to three perNational Association: one for eachSustainable Development pillar(Environment, Social and Economic)

3. Companies were limited to one entryper country

4. The entry had to be supported by acertificate signed by the President ofthe sponsoring National Association andby a 'certificate of commitment' signedby the Chief Executive of the company

concerned giving assurance that thesubmitted project would be maintainedto at least the same standard as thatexisting at the date of entry, during thetime that responsibility for it remainedwith the company.

How were national entriesselected?Selection of Applicants was made inaccordance with the following principles:

1. Selection of applications at nationallevel was made by each UEPG MemberAssociation.

2. Each UEPG Member Association used itsown assessment criteria that it conside-red appropriate. However, the projectneeded to be recognised nationally as agood example of sustainable develop-ment achievement and be worthy of anEuropean award.

Barrie Hedges (President of the Jury)Barrie Hedges is Director of Daybreak Communications in the United Kingdom.

He is a communication specialist with more than 25 years experience in working with minerals and other industrial sectors in the UK.Barrie Hedges’ work with the aggregates industry began as PR manager with a major cement manufacturer before making the switchto consultancy. Since 1987 he has been consultant to the Quarry Products Association and to its predecessor, the Sand and GravelAssociation. The fields in which he has particular experience include aggregates, cement, waste and recycling, as well as energy andsalt. As an experienced journalist, he is also fascinated by the challenges of good community relations.

Dr. Gerald DickDr. Gerald Dick graduated in Zoology and Botany from University of Vienna and is Master of Advanced Studies in EnvironmentManagement (University of Krems).

His professional activity began at the Institute for Applied Behavioral Ecology in Rosenburg as Researcher for Applied Conservation.After 1992 Dr. Dick was responsible for international conservation with the Austrian Environment Ministry. In 1994 he led environ-mental projects in Nicaragua and Thailand for the Austrian Development Cooperation. Since 1995 Dr. Dick has been ConservationDirector at WWF Austria. His personal focus is on species conservation and projects in Eastern Europe and Mongolia.

Professor Tom Myran Tom Myran is Professor of Health, Safety and Environment at the Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering at theNorwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and Scientific Adviser at the Foundation for Scientific and IndustrialResearch at the Norwegian Institute of Technology.

Professor Myran graduated in Mining Engineering and earned a PhD in 1974. During his professional career he has focused on Health,Safety and the Environment in the mining, mineral industry and tunneling. He has now more than 30 years of experience in this field.

Professor Myran has published around 50 papers including three books and was engaged in several major projects.

Dominique Bidou Dominique Bidou is in charge of all sustainable development aspects at the National Public Works Council (Conseil Général des Pontset Chaussées) in France. He is also Chairman of the Association for Environmental High Quality (HQE). Before joining the NationalPublic Works Council, he launched the Agency for Environment and New Energy in the Paris region.

From 1989 to 1992, he was Director at the French Ministry for Environment where he successfully carried out an environmental auditof the National Construction and Homes Regulation. A civil and mining engineer by background, Dominique Bidou is an expert indemographic issues.

Holcim's aim is to fully rehabilitate theareas affected by his process. One of ourquarries in Andalusia is the IsabelConcession, close to the village of Monda,15 km. from Marbella in the province ofMálaga. Since 1992, we have beencarrying out a programme of restorationin harmony with the local environment.

The main difficulty encountered has beenthe tremendous height of an old quarryface, between 60m and 100m To reducethis and create terraces, it has been neces-sary to remove large amounts of rockthrough blasting, keeping part of thismaterial where it fell to form the base, therest of the blasted material has been usedin building two barriers, one visual and theother for safety reasons. The newly createdterraces are then covered with 50 cm. oftopsoil ready for reforestation and theinstallation of an irrigation system.

The restoration was carried out in fourmain stages:

• In the first phase we chose the highestpart of the abandoned quarry face toreforest approximately 12.000m2 withvery young pine trees.

• In the second phase, after preparing anarea of 10.000m2 we planted moremature trees of up to 2.5m high.

• In the third phase we restored 30.000m2.

• With the restoration of the last17.000m2 we have completed the totalrestoration of the quarry face.

We have also been keen on improving thegeneral atmosphere through:

• The creation of gardens around all thequarry buildings.

• The sitting of a visual barrier at the top

of the quarry.

• The siting of another visual barrier tohide the processing plant.

• The asphalting of all internal and exter-nal access roads

• The installation of a water spray systemto control the dust.

• The seeding of the steep slopes withlocal flora to try and stabilize the soilerosion and increase biodiversity.

To restore such a degraded and unstablelandscape has meant moving300.000 tons of dolomite, 30.000 tons oftopsoil and planting 5.700 pine trees andother local flora.

This work strengthen the environmentalcommitment with the natural and socialsurrounding that Holcim Áridos hasassumed since the beginning of its activities.

En Holcim nos planteamos la recuperaciónde las zonas afectadas como un reto nece-sario.

Una de nuestras explotaciones enAndalucía es la "Concesión Minera Isabel",ubicada en el término municipal deMonda, a 15 km. de Marbella. Desde 1992se está llevando a cabo una restauraciónprogresiva de las zonas afectadas por laexplotación, en consonancia con elentorno natural.

La principal dificultad en la restauraciónha sido la excesiva altura del frente deCantera de 60 -100 m. Parte del materialprocedente del arranque, se utiliza comorelleno para disminuir la pendiente delbanco, sirviendo de base para la aporta-ción de aproximadamente 50 cm. deespesor de tierra vegetal para proceder a laplantación de pinos, así como la instala-ción del sistema de riego por goteo.

El resto del material arrancado se ha usadopara construir dos pantallas, una destinadaa reducir el impacto visual de la planta yotra como medida de seguridad para evitarla caída de material.

• En una Primera Fase se seleccionó la partemás alta para proceder a la restauraciónde 12.000m2 con árboles de poca altura.

• En la Segunda Fase, sobre una superficiede 10.000m2 previamente acondiciona-dos, se procedió a la plantación de árbolesde mayor tamaño (hasta 2,5m)

• La Tercera Fase, con una superficierestaurada de 30.000m2, se llevó a cabocon el mismo método utilizado en laSegunda Fase.

• Con la restauración de la Cuarta Fase enaproximadamente 17.000m2, se hacompletado la superficie total prevista parala restauración del frente abandonado.

Otras actuaciones realizadas han sido:

• Ajardinamiento y acondicionamiento devarias zonas de la cantera.

• La creación de una pantalla visual en laparte alta de la cantera

• Asfaltado de carretera de acceso y deviales interiores de la cantera.

• Instalación de un sistema de riego poraspersión para evitar el polvo.

• Trabajos de hidrosiembra con floraautóctona con el fin de acelerar larestauración.

Para llegar a esta situación final, la restau-ración se ha llevado a cabo con un movi-miento total de 300.000 toneladas, con unaporte de tierra vegetal de 30.000 tonela-das y una plantación de 5.700 pinos.

Este trabajo refuerza el compromisomedioambiental con el entorno natural ysocial que Holcim Áridos ha asumido desdeel inicio de sus actividades.

Franzefoss Pukk AS is a company in theFranzefoss Bruk AS Group and wasfounded in 1919.

Franzefoss is one of the largest producersof crushed stone in Norway. FranzefossPukk AS operates 14 plants, has more than100 employees and produces about 3million tonnes of aggregates per year. Thehead office is located in Bærum near Oslo.Franzefoss aims to contribute to sustainabledevelopment.

Since 2001 Franzefoss operates a plant atLierskogen. The plant is situated near adensely populated area. In the past formeroperators had to face complaints of neigh-bours about dust and noise. As a conse-quence in 1998 the Governor of Buskeruddirected that the aggregates plant shouldbe relocated.

When Franzefoss took over the plant theydecided to build a totally new, modern andenvironmentally friendly plant in order toreduce the emissions instead of solelymoving the old plant.

The new plant is located deep downsurrounded by 40 meter high walls.Asphalt- and concrete plants in front ofthe aggregate plant provide a shield andmachines which are build-in additionallyand contribute to the reduction of dustand noise emissions. Measurements fromemissions of the old plant and new plantdemonstrate the reduction of emissionsachieved (see table).

Since the new and modern aggregateplant opened in June 2004 there have notbeen any complaints from the neighbours.

AS og ble grunnlagt i 1919. Franzefoss eren av de største produsentene av pukk oggrus i Norge. Franzefoss Pukk AS driver 14pukkverk/grustak, har mer enn 100 ansatteog produserer rundt 3 millioner tonnbyggeråstoffer årlig. Hovedkontoret liggeri Bærum, nabokommunen til Oslo.Franzefoss bestreber seg på å bidra til enbærekraftig utvikling.

I 2001 tok Franzefoss over Lierskogenpukkverk (i Buskerud fylke). Pukkverketligger nær tettbebyggelse. Tidligere driverehar måttet forholde seg til klager franaboene om støv og støy. Som resultatstilte Fylkesmannen i Buskerud i 1998 kravom flytting av knuseverket.

Da Franzefoss overtok pukkverket ble detbesluttet å bygge et helt nytt, moderne ogmiljøvennlig knuseverk heller enn bare åflytte det eksisterende knuseverket.

Det nye knuseverket ligger nå dypt inne ipukkverket omgitt av 40 meter høyevegger. Asfalt- og betongverkene somligger foran pukkverket er med på ådempe støy og støv og innebygde maski-ner bidrar ytterligere til å redusere utslipp.Støymålinger fra det gamle og det nyepukkverket (fra ulike lokaliteter) dokumenterer oppnådd støyreduksjon (setabellen).

Kilsaran Concrete Limited is a long esta-blished Irish owned company with about250 employees. Kilsaran primarily producesmaterials for the construction industriesand is Ireland’s leading independentproducer of concrete products.

Kilsaran’s objective is to reduce the envi-ronmental impacts which arise througheach activity. In order to achieve thisobjective Kilsaran has established anEnvironmental Management System.

Kilsaran operates the Gallstown site whichis located 6 miles north of Drogheda and 5miles south east of Dunleer, in the CountyLouth in the North-East of Ireland.

Kilsaran started development works in1993 and with commercial rock extractionin 1995. The Gallstown Site producesbetween 650.000 and 750.000 tonnes of

stone per year. Around 65 people aredirectly employed. The Gallstown site isoperated to the very highest environmen-tal standard.

Kilsaran applies comprehensive measuresin order to monitor and reduce noise, blastand dust emissions. Exemplary actions aretaken in terms of Waste and WaterManagement.

Recycling measures and a pioneeringapproach to production help to maximizethe potential of the natural resourcewhich has a positive impact on the envi-ronment by reducing waste and reducingthe need to fall back on additional reser-ves. The water resource at GallstownQuarry is carefully managed as thebedrock is an aquaclude, in that it doesnot hold or transmit groundwater readily.

All available on-site water is accounted forand utilized in dust suppression and in thevarious manufacturing processes. Water isrecycled and re-used utilizing specialistplant and any controlled discharge fromthe site is treated to comply with adischarge license.

High standards in other fields like ofPublic Safety, Visual Impacts andCommunity Relations, complete the envi-ronmental measures.

The Tarmac Group is the market leader inaggregates, mortar, concrete block andasphalt and number two in ready-mixedconcrete in the United Kingdom.

More than 10.000 people are employedwith Tarmac. In 2003 Tarmac celebrated its100th birthday.

Berwick Woods is located 2.5 km to thenorth east of Rainham in the LondonBorough of Havering.

It has played a significant role in theextraction of sand and gravel from the mid1950s. The Berwick Woods Project was setup in 1995 as a pioneering initiative byTarmac in partnership with Thames Chasewhich transformed the derelict sand andgravel site into an attractive area ofnature. The restoration has enhanced theattractions and accessibility of the site.

From the beginning Tarmac and ThamesChase pursued the objective to involve andengage the local community in the wholerestoration process.

The Berwick Woods Project’s emphasis onthe arts led to the engagement of artistsof national reputation. Artist Steven Follendesigned the unique ‘gabion’ seats whichreflect the industrial history of the site.

Local children worked together with theartists to achieve the Integration of artinto the process of environmental impro-vement.

A main theme of the restoration projectwas to facilitate public access. The instal-lation of footpaths, foot bridges, signage,new entrances and car parking facilities.

Educational visits to the site, communitytree planting days and events and projectsthat have been organized over the year aresome examples of successful involvementand engagement and have led to a specialrelationship of local people to the site.

In Compañia General de Canteras produc-tion, safety, quality and environment havealways been a main concern. The idea ofputting together these two main pillars100 to the development in 2000 of thePrevention department, which aims for adifferent strategy in all the business levels,a new concept, a "safe and productiveculture", which unifies the ideas ofmaximum production with minimum risk.

Implication. We are looking for the impli-cation of the maximum number ofemployers, giving their voice for theiryears of experience. Carrying out thesafety and health legislation, we haveworkers' representatives in each of thequarries who are taking care of the rightfulfilment of the law. The workers have thefollowing implication tools: suggestionsdesk, implication in the selection process

of the Personal Protection EquipmentsPPE's, safety meetings and committees.

Training. For CGC, training begins with atotal respect for the workers' years ofexperience. The training orientated talksare developed in the quarry so that there isnot a waste of time in travel for theworkers and making possible the maximumattendance. The training instructor is anexpert in the matters to discuss and theyuse a clear language, favouring the impli-cation of the workers. At the end of thetalks the training instructor gives theworkers an attendance list besides ananonymous evaluation sheet to help usknow our employers' ideas. In this trainingwe find: Electrical works, Defensive driving,Height works, Safety in mobile machineryoperation, annual controlled fire simula-tion, resuscitation techniques and injured

workers transfer and training days called"Living safety" Information. The workerhas free access to H&S informationthrough different stands: a poster signedby the president of Italcementi Groupconcerning the safety policies, a posterwith the number of working days withoutaccidents, safety related magazines, hand-books and publications, a safety boardwith main safety information, etc.

The "safety and production culture" enfor-cement has led CGC to an overwhelmingdecrease in the number of accidentsthroughout the last few years.

CGC makes all these efforts possible by acontinuous technological renovation andby adapting its installations to the legalstandards.

La idea de aunarestos pilares básicos hace que en 2001surja el Servicio de Prevención propiomancomunado que ha conseguido uncambio de pensamiento a todos los nivelesempresariales, centrado en un novedosoconcepto: “la cultura productiva con segu-ridad”, que unifica la idea de la máximaproducción con el mínimo riesgo.

Participación. Se persigue la participacióndel máximo número de trabajadores,dando voz a sus años de experiencia.Cumpliendo la LPRL contamos con 3Delegados de Prevención y un DelegadoMinero de Seguridad en cada una de las 7explotaciones que velan en todo momentopor el estricto cumplimiento de dicha ley.Los trabajadores cuentan numerosasherramientas de participación como son

buzón de sugerencias de seguridad, laselección de EPl's donde el trabajadorparticipa activamente, las reuniones deseguridad, etc.

Formación. En C.G.C. la formación partedel respeto que merecen los años de expe-riencia de los trabajadores. Los cursosorientados a la formación, se realizan en lapropia cantera a fin de evitar pérdidas detiempo en desplazamientos y posibilitandola máxima participación. El responsable dela formación es un experto en la materia atratar, y en su exposición utiliza unlenguaje sencillo y cercano al trabajador. Ala finalización de los cursos se distribuyeun listado de asistencia y una hoja deevaluación anónima, que nos ayuda aconocer las opiniones de los trabajadores.Esta formación incluye trabajos eléctricos,conducción defensiva, trabajo en altura,seguridad en el manejo de maquinariamóvil, simulacros de extinción de incen-

dios, reanimación pulmonar y evacuaciónde heridos y Jornadas “Vivir la seguridad"Información. El trabajador tiene libreacceso a la información que se materializaa través de diversos soportes: cartelfirmado por el presidente del grupoItalcementi con la política de seguridad,cartel con el número de días transcurridossin accidentes, expositores con revistas,manuales y publicaciones, tablón de infor-maciones de seguridad, etc.

La puesta en práctica de la “cultura de laproducción con seguridad" ha conducido aC.G.C. a la disminución drástica del n° deaccidentes en los últimos años.

Since the beast of burden service forfarming in 1960, the foundation of adynamic and solidly made business sector,currently called EMIPESA, was beingformed in Teruel.

The EMIPESA enterprise is an alive exampleof work and compromise, in order to gainthe future in a rural area and in a provincelike Teruel one, where we run into a set ofwell known problems, like depopulation,financial unbalance in relation to borderingprovinces, lack of infrastructures, leastmain services and endemic deficiency.Teruel, with 0,36 % , which are supposed togive lightweight to Spanish gross addedvalue, is the fourth Province among the restof them in Spain.

EMIPESA, with headquarters in Mora deRubielos and La Puebla de Valverde, hasthree quarries called: El Ventorrillo, Mas deSalto and Sandra. Limestone is extracted intwo of them mentioned at the first place

and the altered diabase nature stone comesfrom the third one.

The enterprise consists of 90 people staffwith 125 mobile units and 14 permanentinstallations for gravel aggregate andmortar mixture production; besides there isits own laboratory where the quality of allthe manufactured products is verified. Itrelies on the collaboration with peripheralenterprises made up of EMIPESA’s indepen-dent workers.

Thanks to constant investment in theimprovement of production processes andservices, we became worthy of CE MARKETof all our aggregate products, and wemanaged to get involved in the importantcompromises like aggregate supplies forstretches of the Main Road or ballastproduction for High-speed Train line autho-rized by Railway State Enterprise (RENFE).

From the beginning this enterprise workswith the main aims of Quality works,Nature, Environment, workers’ Safety andHealth. Its management is based on theEfficiency of all of the processes:Certificated in accordance with UNE-EN-ISO 9001-2000 Standard.

Desde el servicio de caballerías paralabranza en el año 60 se fue poniendo loscimientos de la empresa dinámica y sólidadel tejido empresarial de Teruel que esahora EMIPESA.

Hülskens was founded at the end of the19th century by Gerhard Hülskens togetherwith Conrad Krieger and Dr. DietrichKuckelmann and has its principal office inWesel.

At the beginning, hydraulic engineeringwas the focus of the company. The inven-tion of ferroconcrete in the 1920’s formedthe basis for a new branch of the business:extraction of gravel and sand. NowadaysHülskens is successfully operating withready-mixed concrete.

The Büderich-Ginderich site has providedessential materials for the Niederrheinregion, Münsterland, Ruhr Basin and theNetherlands since 1987.

In 2000 the company decided to illumi-nate the site. The objective behind thatidea was to put the aggregates industry ina more favourable light.

It was intended that the illuminationshould stress the different features andfunctions of the object.

The elongated transport devices and thetiny steel construction parts have beenaccentuated by disguised light stripes andthe dumps and silos highlighted with lightrays of various intensity.

Changing colours emphasize the variousparts of the plant. The steel constructionof the facility together with its zinc coatedsurfaces are submerged in green and bluelight. The heaps of sand and gravel gleamin golden yellow. White shining band-linesform linking elements.

The transformation of the site to a work ofart by night has found great favour withthe community and indeed has become alocal tourist attraction.

Zu Beginn stand der Wasserbau imMittelpunkt. Mit der Erfindung desStahlbetons in den 20er Jahren enstandein neuer Geschäftszweig: Kies-undSandgewinnung. Heutzutage ist dasUnternehmen erfolgreich im SektorTransportbeton tätig.

Das Kieswerk Büderich-Ginderich versorgtseit 1987 Abnehmer am Niederrhein, imRuhrgebiet, im Münsterland und in denNiederlanden mit den Rohstoffen Kies undSand.

Im Jahre 2000 fasste man den Entschlussdas Kieswerk zu beleuchten. Die Idee

hinter diesem Projekt war, die Kies-undSandindustrie in ein positiveres Licht zurücken. Von zahlreichen Varianten wurdeschließlich jene gewählt, die sich an denEigenschaften und Funktionen derbeleuchteten Elemente orientiert.

Langgestreckte Transporteinrichtungenund ihre filigranen Stahlkonstruktionenwerden durch verdeckt installierteLichtbänder hervorgehoben, die flächen-haften Silos und Halden mit starkenStrahlern unterschiedlicher Intensitätbeleuchtet.

Wechselnde Farben heben die verschiede-nen Elemente der Anlage hervor. DieStahlkonstruktion der Aufbereitung unddie verzinkten Flächen der Silos werden ingrünes und blaues Licht getaucht. Kies-und Sandhalden erstrahlen in einem gelb-

goldenen Glanz. Weiß illuminierteBandanalgen bilden verbindendeElemente.

Die Lichtinszenierung fand großenAnklang in der Bevölkerung und wurde zueiner Touristenattraktion.

The two quarry sites of Monviso S.p.A. areintegral part, from organizational point ofview, of the Zone Piedmont of CalcestruzziS.p.A. – Italcementi Group; they worksince halves the years ’60.

Quarries are located in the banks of theriver Po in the communes of Casalgrasso(Cn) and Carmagnola (To). Beginning fromthe end of the years ’90, the RegionPiedmont has authorized two exploitationplans for 20 years lasting divided in 5 yearslotteries; the “regional system of theprotected areas of the river band of thePo” has been founded for safeguarding anunique environment, signed by severaldecades of “wild” exploitation activity.

Calcestruzzi stipulated a convention withthe “Corporate body” involved for the defi-nitive transfer of main part of the areas,previous environmental recovery, at theend of the activities.

The "executive project” in his complexinvolves the most varied competences(territorial planning, urbanism, geology,mining engineering, hydraulic, environ-mental sciences, ecology, etc.).

The principal address, that directs thewhole project, is based on the availableand potential naturalistic resources; quar-rying interventions will not alter the possi-bility to realize the project of naturalisticevaluation, but contrarily they will make itcompatible with other uses (fishing,recreational activity and loisirs for thelocal inhabitants).

Part of the river bands is today interestedby the quarries service areas (workmans-hips, stores, overburden stocks, squares ofmanoeuvre, offices…); such areas, recove-red, will enrich the qualification of theriver bands and will give continuity to thenaturalistic itineraries along the banks.

From the point of view of the territorialsituation, the whole zone is geologicallyand historically tied up to the river; the Powith his mobility has heavily conditionedthe uses and the infrastructures. Quarrybasins assume the consolidated role ofdestinations for the leisure time of thenumerous local fishermen. The zone istherefore absolutely different from therest of the river bands in terms of antropicpresence: sign of the river, even thoughcorrected by the man in the ‘800, producesa general sense of more natural landscapethan the surrounding (antropized both inthe rural part and in the built one).

Monviso project foresees the rinaturaliza-tion of the banks of the Po and the areasto the surrounding, with formation ofriparian wood, cycle-pedestrian runs,landings for small tourist boats and areasfor standstill, games, camping and pic-nic.

I due siti di cava Monviso S.p.A. sono parteintegrante, dal punto di vista organizza-tivo, della Zona Piemonte di CalcestruzziS.p.A. – Italcementi Group. L’escavazione èiniziata a metà degli anni ’60.

Le cave sono ubicate sulle rive del FiumePo nei comuni di Casalgrasso (Cn) eCarmagnola (To). A partire dalla fine deglianni ’90, la Regione Piemonte ha concessodue autorizzazioni di durata ventennaleper lotti quinquennali; il "Sistema regio-nale delle aree protette della fasciafluviale del Po" è stato istituito ai fini disalvaguardare un ambiente unico, segnatoda decenni di attività estrattive non rego-lamentate e quindi “selvagge”.

Calcestruzzi S.p.A. ha stipulato, con gli Enticoinvolti, una convenzione che comportail trasferimento definitivo, a questi ultimi,della proprietà della maggior parte dellearee, previo ripristino ambientale, alla finedelle attività estrattive.

Il "progetto esecutivo” nel suo complessocoinvolge le più svariate competenze(pianificazione territoriale, urbanistica,geologia, ingegneria mineraria, idraulica,scienze ambientali, ecologia, etc.).

Il principale indirizzo, che orienta tutto ilpiano, è basato sulle risorse naturalistichedisponibili e potenziali; gli interventiestrattivi non altereranno la possibilità direalizzare il progetto di ripristino ambien-tale, ma al contrario lo renderannocompatibile con altri usi (pesca, attivitàricreative e loisirs per gli abitanti locali).

Parte delle superfici di sponda fluvialesono oggi interessate dalle aree di serviziodella cava (lavorazioni, magazzini, depo-sito di terreno di scopertura, piazzali dimanovra, uffici…); tali aree, recuperate,arricchiranno la qualificazione ambientaledelle fasce fluviali e daranno continuitàagli itinerari naturalistici spondali.

Dal punto di vista della situazione territo-riale, l’intera zona è geologicamente estoricamente legata al fiume; il Po con lasua mobilità ha condizionato pesante-mente gli utilizzi e le infrastrutture.I bacini di cava assumono il ruolo ormaiconsolidato di meta per il tempo libero deinumerosi pescatori locali.

La zona è quindi assolutamente differentedal resto delle fasce fluviali in tema dipresenze antropiche: il segno del fiume,seppure rettificato dall’uomo nell’800,genera un senso complessivo di paesaggiopiù naturale di quello circostante (antro-pizzato sia nella parte rurale che in quellaedificata).

Il progetto Monviso prevede la rinaturaliz-zazione delle sponde del Po e delle areecircostanti, con la formazione di boschiripari e golenali, percorsi ciclo-pedonali,approdi per piccole imbarcazioni turisti-che, aree di sosta, giochi e pic-nic.

Lafarge was founded in 1833 and is theworld’s leading producer in building mate-rials. It has more than 77.000 employees in75 countries.

The Chevrières-Longueil Sainte Marie sites,which consist of a processing plant, multi-modal transport hub and an alluvialquarry, are located in a flood plain in arural area on the outskirts of Greater Paris(Ile-de-France) that is currently becomingurbanized. Alluvial materials from thequarry, as well as crushed rock aggregatestransported by rail from Northern France,are sold locally and throughout the Ile-de-France region. This double role places it atthe heart of local stakeholders that go farbeyond the scope of the quarrying activity.

In this context, only exemplary conductcould facilitate the continuation of indus-trial activities by obtaining new extraction

authorizations. The extinction of quar-rying activities in the Oise could have haddisastrous economic consequences sinceurbanization entailed increasing needs forcrushed rock.

When Granulats de Picardie arrived in thearea in 1997-98, quarrymen were not seenin a positive light because former quarrieshad been abandoned, creating hazardousareas for illegal dumping.

After assessing the situation, Granulats dePicardie was structured and teams incharge of rehabilitating the abandonedzones were formed, in collaboration withall local stakeholders. Since 1999, 376hectares were rehabilitated with:

• Supply of materials to a region charac-terised by high demand, taking intoconsideration the substitution betweenrock and alluvial aggregates.

• Contribution to the development of

multimodal logistics in preparation for a

forthcoming shortage of materials in the

Ile-de-France region. A junction hub

between water and railways avoids road

traffic.

• Creation of flood control basins in

former quarries, spares local communi-

ties from the consequences of potential

flooding at a low cost.

• Development of economic activities on

the restored sites that are a source of

employment for the area.

The Chevrières-Longueil Sainte Marie sites

in this ways gave birth to pioneering

initiatives that contribute to the concept

of innovative country planning and regio-

nal development.

Fondé en 1833, Lafarge est le leadermondial des matériaux de construction. Le groupe est présent dans 75 pays etcompte 77000 collaborateurs.

Le dispositif de Chevrières – Longueil SainteMarie – Rivecourt, qui réunit une installa-tion de traitement, une plateforme logis-tique multimodale et un site d’extractionalluvionaire, s’inscrit dans un territoire ruralmarqué par les crues et qui, situé auxconfins de l’Ile-de-France, s’urbanise. Lesmatériaux extraits (600 000 tonnes/an) etles granulats de roches massives acheminésdu Nord par voie ferrée, sont commercialiséssur place et vers l’Ile-de-France. Cettedouble vocation place le dispositif au cœurd’enjeux locaux qui dépassent largement lecadre de l’activité d’extraction.

A l’arrivée de Granulats de Picardie dans leboucle de Chevrières en 1997-98, les carriersavaient mauvaise presse : des anciens sited’extraction laissés à l’abandon dénaturaientle paysage. Poursuivre des activités indus-trielles par l’obtention de nouvelles autorisa-

tions d’extraction dans un tel contextesupposait de se montrer « exemplaire».Pourtant, l’extinction des activités d’extrac-tion dans l’Oise aurait eu des conséquenceséconomiques désastreuses au vu des besoinsen granulats induits par l’urbanisation.

Après avoir dressé un bilan de la situation,Lafarge Granulats s’est structuré et a mis enplace une équipe chargée d’aménager lessites non remis en état en concertation avecl’ensemble des parties prenantes locales. 376hectares ont ainsi été réaménagés depuis1999, sur un rayon de 25 km autour deChevrières.

Ce travail de concertation a donné lieu à laconception d’aménagements innovantsqui font aujourd’hui référence dans lesréflexions sur la vocation future des sitesd’extraction. Aujourd’hui grâce à ce travailet à la reprise des activités d’extraction, lessites de Chevrières sont à même de répon-dre à différents besoins locaux, à savoir :

• Fourniture de matériaux dans une régionà forte demande en prenant en comptela substitution roche massive / rochealluvionnaire

• Contribution au développement d’unelogistique multimodale dans uncontexte de prochaine pénurie de maté-riaux en Ile de France. Un embranche-ment fer -eau qui permet de limiter letrafic routier

• Réalisation d’un bassin d’ecrêtement surle site « Le Barrage » qui permet auxcommunes voisines d’être protégées desinondations a moindre coût

• Developpement d’activités économiquescréatrices d’emplois sur les sites aména-gés par Lafarge Granulats

Grâce aux relations de confiance et auxpartenariats de long terme que Granulats dePicardie a su nouer, les sites de Chevrière ontdonné naissance à certaines initiatives pion-nières qui apportent leur pierre à la concep-tion d’aménagement innovants.

The headquarters of the Bernegger BauGmbH is located near Molln in UpperAustria in the region of a National Park. Itwas founded by Barbara and KarlBernegger in the year 1947 and developedinto one of the major employers in theregion.

Currently more than 420 persons areemployed in the areas of quarrying andprocessing of minerals, in building cons-truction, civil engineering and industrialconstruction as well as in the productionof high quality building materials for theconstruction sector.

Around 400.000 tonnes of limestone areannually converted in Molln into highquality products from grinding mills andmachines which are used by the technicaland chemical industry as well as by the

fertiliser and animal feed producers andfor the technical environment equipment.

Facing the end of extraction at theGaisberg site in a few years time, thecompany realized its vision for ensuring asustainable supply of raw materials for itsprocessing facilities and for retaining theMolln location.

It constructed a 3,5 km and 15% gradienttunnel in order to develop a new site,shaped as a 16,4 ha wide funnel. Theextraction area enables the reduction ofenvironmental impact and is only visiblefrom a few external points.

To reduce further environmental effects,the pre-crushed limestone is transportedby a conveyer belt system instead of bytruck.

This innovative project secured the supplyof resources, employment opportunitiesfor the next three generations and therecultivation of the Gaisberg site.

Die Firma Bernegger Bau GmbH hat ihrenStammsitz in der Nationalparkregion inMolln in Oberösterreich. Das Unternehmenwurde im Jahr 1949 von Barbara und KarlBernegger gegründet und zählt heute zuden größten Arbeitgebern in der Region.

Die 420 Mitarbeiter sind in den BereichenRohstoffgewinnung undRohstoffveredelung, im Hoch-, Tief-undIndustriebau und in der Erzeugung vonhochwertigen Bauprodukten für dieBauwirtschaft tätig. Etwa 400.000 TonnenKalkstein werden jährlich in derMahlanlage Molln zu hochfeinenMahlprodukten für die technisch-chemis-che Industrie, für die Dünge- undFuttermittelindustrie sowie für umwelt-technische Anlagen hergestellt.

Zur zukünftigen Absicherung derRohstoffversorgung für den StandortMolln realisierte die Firma Bernegger ihreVision.

Es wurde ein 3,5 km langer und 15%geneigter Förderstollen gebaut um ein alsTrichterabbau ausgeformten ca. 16,4 hagroßen Tagebau für hochreinen Kalksteinzu erschließen. Trotz seiner Größe ist derTrichterabbau nur von wenigen exponier-ten Stellen einsehbar. Durch denTrichterabbau Pfaffenboden konnte dieUmweltbelastung wesentlich reduziertwerden.

Um eine weitere Maßnahmen hinsichtlichUmweltschutz zu setzen, wurde anstelleeiner LKW-Förderung ein innovativesFördersystem verwirklicht.

Durch dieses Projekt wurde dieRohstoffversorgung und dadurch dieArbeitsplätze in der Region für die nächs-ten drei Generationen gesichert sowie dieRekultivierung des bestehendenSteinbruchs Gaisberg ermöglicht.

Der Trichterabbau Pfaffenboden ist einerfolgreiches Beispiel für die Vereinbarkeitvon ökonomischen, sozialen und umwelt-bezogenen Interessen.

Wietersdorfer & Peggauer ZementwerkeGmbH has its headquarter in Klagenfurtand employs currently 420 persons. Thecompany has locations in Wietersdorf,Peggau and Leoben.

The limes quarries of Peggau are located inlandscape conservation and water catch-ment areas in the south-east of Austria.The main tourist attraction in Peggau isthe ‘Lur’ cavern which is the biggeststalactite cavern in Austria.

The cavern divides the extraction site andmust not be damaged by the extractionactivities. Therefore the extraction processand techniques have been adapted.

Measures like the conversion from facequarrying to combined face quarrying,benching with reduced bench heights,vertical hauling shafts and numerous

technological blasting measures havebeen implemented. Conversion measureshave also been applied to the Wietersdorfquarry .

As a result of the reduction of emissions tothe environment, the nature and thecavern in Peggau has been conserved. Inaddition since the changes of 2001 therehave been no complaints from the localcommunity.

Die Kalksteinbrüche des Werkes Peggaubefinden sich im Landschafts- undWasserschongebiet im Südosten Öster-reichs. Die Hauptattraktion des OrtesPeggau ist die Lurhöhle, Österreichs größteTropfsteinhöhle.

Die Höhle trennt mit ihrenSicherheitszonen die Abbaue und darfdurch die Gewinnungstätigkeit nichtbeeinträchtigt werden. DasAbbauverfahren wurde daher entspre-chend angepasst.

Die Maßnahmen umfassten, dieUmstellung des Abbauverfahrens voneinem Wandabbau zu einem kombinierten

Wand- und Etagenabbau, die Reduktionder Etagenhöhe, die Inbetriebnahme einerSturzschacht- und Stollenförderanlage insWerk, zahlreiche sprengtechnischeMaßnahmen sowie insbesondere dieEinführung von elektronischen Zündern,die neue Möglichkeiten hinsichtlich derGestaltung der Verzögerungsintervallesowie Optimierung der Sprengarbeit eröff-neten. Umstellungsmaßnahmen wurdenauch im Werkstandort Wietersdorf durch-geführt.

Die Rohstoffgewinnung kann daher untergrößtmöglichem Natur-und Umweltschutzdurchgeführt werden.

Hasenöhrl GmbH is a family firm opera-ting in the aggregates sector and employs250 persons.

The company Hasenöhrl deals not onlywith extraction but also with processingof mineral resources. Not only high qualityready-mix concrete is produced fromgravel but also nearly 100% of the demo-lition waste is recycled. In this way amaterials flow chain arises that protectsthe gravel resources to the best possibleextent.

In 2001/2002 the project ‘Extension of theRevitalised Abandoned Meander of theRiver Enns’ was launched by the EnnsFishery Association. In order to finance theproject, purchasers were found for thegravel available in the framework of theproject.

The Hasenöhrl company was selected tocarry out the excavations.

The opportunity to develop a project notonly for the economic reasons but also forthe value of its harmony with nature wasappreciated by all involved. The companyhas already carried out several similarprojects, but it was the first time that thecompany had availed itself of scientificexpertise while realizing a project.

The company committed itself to proceedwith the excavations according to envi-ronmental standards and under theguidance of environmental site inspection.

The project has successfully achieved itsobjective to establish spawning groundsand habitats for a range of wildlife.

Die Firma beschäftigt sich nicht nur mitder Gewinnung der Rohstoffe, sondernauch mit deren Veredelung. Aus Kies wirdnicht nur hochwertiger Transportbetonerzeugt sondern aus Abbrüchen werdenfast 100% Recyclingprodukte rückgewon-nen. So entsteht ein Stoffkreislauf zurgrößtmöglichen Schonung der natürlichenKiesressourcen.

Im Jahr 2001/2002 startete derFischereiverein Enns das Projekt‚Erweiterung des Revitalisierten Altarmesder Enns’. Um die Finanzierung desProjektes zu gewährleisten wurdenAbnehmer für die im Projektsbereichvorhandenen Schottervorkommen gesucht.

Die Firma Hasenöhrl wurde vomFischereiverein Enns mit denBaggerungsarbeiten am Projekt beauf-

tragt. Gleichzeitig verpflichtete sich dieFirma Hasenöhrl die Baggerungen nachökologischen Gesichtspunkten unterAnleitung einer ökologischen Bauaufsichtdurchzuführen.

Es wurden schon mehrere Projekte dieserArt durchgeführt. Die Besonderheit diesesProjektes war jedoch die umfassendewissenschaftliche Begleitung. Ein Projektnicht nur aus wirtschaftlichen Gründensondern auch im Einklang mit der Naturentstehen zu lassen wurde von allenBeteiligten geschätzt.

Schon kurz nach der Öffnung des geschaf-fenen Altarmes konnten zahlreiche Fischein den Gewässern beobachtet werden. DerDonaufisch und der Eisvogel nahmen denrevitalisierten Altarm binnen kürzester Zeitals Laich- bzw. Brutstätte an. Das Projekthat, durch die Errichtung von entspre-chenden Lebensräumen, eine großeArtenvielfalt ermöglicht.

The Gralex Group is one of the mostimportant producer of aggregates inBelgium. It operates 21 sites in Belgiumand produces about 10 million tonnes ofaggregates per year. Currently Gralexemploys around 300 people.

The priority objective of Gralex is accidentprevention. To achieve this objectivemeasures are put into place to enableimprovements in this field.

The safety organization within the GroupGralex is based on the principle of onesafety manager with the highest level oftraining and responsibilities of organiza-tion, coordination, training and presencein the field when needed, and one safetymanager with level 2 training in everyproduction unit and 100% presence in thefield.

Gralex analyzed and evaluated all acci-dents in their company. As a consequenceseveral kind of training for its employeesand prevention measure were implemented.

One of these measures was the publica-tion of a safety brochure. The concept wasto communicate through cartoons inorder to draw attention to safety.

Through all these measures a reductionwas achieved in terms of frequency andseverity of accidents.

L’organisation de la prévention dans legroupe Gralex est basée sur les principessuivants :

• un conseiller en prévention de niveau 1ayant la responsabilité de l’organisation,de la coordination, de la formation etprésent sur le terrain quand cela s’avèrenécessaire;

• un conseiller en prévention de niveau 2dans chaque centre de production etprésent sur le terrain à temps plein.

La première étape d’une bonne préventiona été l’analyse de tous les accidents et deleur évolution dans le temps.

Cette analyse nous a amené à organiserune série de formations adaptées pourtout le personnel.

A cause de l’évolution dans le temps dutype d’accidents, nous avons dû réagir et

prendre d’autres mesures de prévention:une de ces mesures a été l’édition d’unebrochure de sécurité dont l’objectif est dedonner à tout le personnel du groupe unmaximum d’informations concernant laprévention dans notre métier.

Cette brochure a été conçue sous formed’une sorte de bande dessinée pour attirerl’attention sur l’objectif sécurité.

L’évolution des indicateurs de sécuritémontre les progrès réalisés dans le groupe:

-taux de fréquence de 124 à 32;

- taux de gravité de 2,6 à 0.7;

Ces chiffres sont la traduction d’une bonneanalyse des besoins en sécurité et de l’effetoccasionné par la brochure devant donnerle réflexe sécurité à tout le personnel.

La sécurité sera toujours la première prio-rité du groupe Gralex.

Kámen a Písek spol. s r. o. is a companythat operates in the aggregates sector andis one of the biggest in this sector in theCzech Republic. Kámen a písek sr.o. is asubsidiary company of the KirchdorferIndustries GmbH and produces around 1.5millions tonnes per year.

Plesovice site is one of the biggest aggre-gate deposits in South Bohemia and provi-des reserves for 165 years. The aggregate ismainly used for the production of aggre-gates for rail and road, aggregates forconcrete and coating mixture production.

In 1992 the Kámen a Písek, spol s r. o.initiated a gradual upgrade of the site. In2003 the company started to solve theissue concerning the final products sortingline, material sorting quality, noise levelsof the old sorting machines, the sortingline dust nuisance and final sorting of

elements smaller than 0,063mm from 0-4mm fractions for coating plants.

The reconstruction was carried out in twostages. The first stage of reconstructionconsisted of installation of new bearingstructure with sorting machines, casing,exhaust, belt transporter and new shea-thing. The second stage included theinstallation of a new cascade air separatorintended for removal of elements smallerthan 0,063 mm from 0-4 mm fractions.

As a result the production quality nowmeets the European standard as well asthe requirements for lower operatingcosts and quality products, lower noiselevels, dust nuisance and emissions, betterutilization of the raw material from thedeposit and reduced secondary dustnuisance. In addition it will result insmaller mining areas in the future.

Kámen a písek spol. s r.o. je jednou znejvětších společností v oborukamenoprůmyslu v české republice. Patří doskupiny Kirchdorfer Industries GmbH a vyrábípřibližně 1,5 milionu tun ročně.

Kamenolom Plešovice je na jednom znejvětších ložisek kamene v jižních čecháchs vypočtenými zásobami na 165 let. Těžěnýgranulit se převážně používá pro výrobukameniva pro stavbu železnic a vozovek, provýrobu betonu a obalovaných směsí.

V roce 1992 Kámen a písek spol. s r.o.začal spostupnou modernizací kamenolomu. V roce2003 společnost začala s řešením třídírnyhotových výrobků, a to kvality třídění, hluč-nosti starých třídičů, prašnosti třídírny akonečného oddělování částic menších než0,063 mm z frakcí 0-4 mm pro obalovny.

Rekonstrukce proběhla ve dvou fázích. Prvnífáze sestávala z instalace nové nosné kons-

trukce s třídiči, zakrytováním, odsáváním,pásovým dopravníkem a opláštěním. Druháfáze zahrnovala instalaci kaskádového větr-ného třídiče pro odstranění částic menšíchnež 0,063 mm z frakce 0-4 mm.

Výsledkem je, že kvalita výroby vyhovuje jakevropským standardům tak požadavkům nanižší výrobní náklady a kvalitní výrobky,snížení hlučnosti, prašnosti, emisí, lepšívyužití suroviny z ložiska a snížení druhotnéprašnosti. To povede v budoucnu ke sníženízáborů půdy pro těžbu.

Faber Straßen-und Tiefbau GmbH,Schlierschied is a subsidiary of the FaberGroup, Alzey.

The Faber Group has several quarries andgravel-sites in Saxony and Hungary. 115workers are employed at the Schlierschiedlocation and 350 at the location in Alzey.

Faber Straßen-und Tiefbau GmbH is plan-ning to develop a new quarry called‘Tagebau Marta’. The quarry is located inthe province Rheinland-Pfalz. It is situatedin the area of the Hunsrück Mountains,within the nature conservation area ofSoonwald near to the Nahe river valley.

It is planned to extract materials for cons-truction. Potential unfavourable effectsconcerning the local recreation andtourism in the region were consideredduring the application process. In order to

compensate for the negative impactsduring production, the company proposedto use the geo-touristic potential of thesite for regional tourism, recreation activi-ties and education.

The company will offer plant tours anderect an observation platform. A localgeological trail will connect the site withother geological outcrops in the close vici-nity. Additionally other outcrops in thevicinity were registered in order to assistthe local community with the develop-ment of the regional geo-tourism.

By developing the geo-tourism potentialit will contribute to the sustainable andprospective promotion of the tourismsector.

Faber Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH,Schlierschied, ist eine Niederlassung derFaber Gruppe, Alzey. Die Faber-Gruppebetreibt mehrere Steinbrüche undKiesgruben in Sachsen und Ungarn. AmStandort Schlierschied sind 115 und amStandort Alzey 350 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt.

Die Firma beabsichtigt den Steinbruch‚Tagebau Marta’ zu erschließen. Dergeplante Tagebau Marta befindet sich imBundesland Rheinland-Pfalz im Süden desMittelgebierges Hunsrück, innerhalb desNaturparks Soonwald.

Im Steinbruch soll Latitandesit abgebautwerden und zu Zuschlägen für dieBauindustrie aufbereitet werden. Möglichenegative Auswirkungen auf den Tourismusin der Region wurden im Antragsverfahrenberücksichtigt. Zur Kompensation wurdeseitens des Betreibers vorgeschlagen, das

geotouristische Erlebnispotenzial desSteinbruchs für den regionalen Tourismus,das Freizeitwesen und für pädagogischeZwecke zu nutzen.

Das Unternehmen wird Betriebs-besichtigungen anbieten und eineBeobachtungsplattform errichten. Einlokaler geologischer Lehrpfad wird denSteinbruch mit nahe gelegenenAufschlüssen verknüpfen. Zusätzlichwurden weitere Aufschlüsse in der engerenund weiteren Umgebung erfasst, um dieEntwicklung des regionalen Geotourismuszu fördern.

Die Firma Faber Straßen- und TiefbauGmbH trägt durch die Aktivierung dergeotouristischen Potenziale zu einer nach-haltigen, zukunftsfähigen Sicherung desTourismussektors bei.

Roadstone is a subsidiary of CRH theinternational building materials group.Roadstone has more than 50 locations andemploys over 1500 people. It is the leadingmanufacturer and supplier of buildingmaterials in Ireland.

Roadstone owns the Castlebar quarrywhich is located within the Castlebarurban boundary in the West of Ireland. Itis a limestone site involved in the produc-tion of limestone aggregates, agriculturallimestone, bituminous road products,ready mix concrete and concrete blocksfor house and industrial construction.

Health and safety has a major role for thecompany. The Castlebar quarry is operatedto the very highest standards of safetyand health.

Visitors and workers alike are introducedto the safety culture.

Several signs at the site permanentlyremind visitors and staff to be aware ofsafety precautions.

Employees are introduced from the begin-ning to safety. All contractors are obligedto participate in a two day safetyprogramme. Safety audits and an establis-hed safety committee complete the safetyactivities.

Castlebar furthermore designed a transportsystem in order to minimize the need forexternal traffic to access the working areas.A Health and Safety Specification is prepa-red for each item of plant in order toensure in advance the purchase of equip-ment that meets safety standard instead ofadjusting it at a later date.

The site is located in Luisago-Villa Guardiain the suburbs of Como and was used as aquarry of sand and gravel. It later becamean illegal tip for dangerous industrialwaste.

The area covers an area of 33.000 squaremetres and is next to the Ex PoloEstrattivo, an old quarry of 380.000squares metres that had extraction byConsorzio Comense Inerti spa for 14 years.

In 1987 the company bought the area andreclaimed the site in collaboration withthe Local Health Service and became thepromoter of the environmental restora-tion project by means of land filling withconstruction and demolition waste.

The restoration process started in 1990and lasted 3 years. In 1997 the inaugura-tion ceremony of the reconstructed hill

took place in presence of the LocalAuthorities.

After a few years Consorzio ComenseInerti took the decision to transform thearea into a golf course. In 2003 the golfcourse was inaugurated.

Currently the company is working on theenlargement of the project.

The transformation of the former derelictarea into an attractive sports areademonstrates what can be achievedthrough successful cooperation between apublic- private partnership.

L’area - circa 33.000 metri quadrati -collocata in Comune di Luisago - VillaGuardia (CO), negli anni ’70 è stata oggettodi sfruttamento come cava di prestito perl’allargamento dell’Autostrada A9 e succes-sivamente trasformata in discarica abusivadi rifiuti industriali.

Nel 1987 il Consorzio Comense Inerti incollaborazione con l’Unità Sanitaria Localeha provveduto a bonificare l’area e si èfatto promotore di un intervento di ripris-tino morfologico ambientale.

L’attività, iniziata nel mese di gennaio del1990, si è conclusa a metà del 1993.

Una volta ricostruiti i profili originari delterreno, sono state intraprese le operazionidi riqualificazione ambientale finale dell’a-rea (stesura del terreno coltivo superficiale,creazione di un tappeto erboso e piantu-mazione dell’area).

Restituita all’area la dignità ambientaleoriginaria, nella primavera del 1997 è statainaugurata la “Collina ricostruita” allapresenza delle principali Autorità locali.

Dopo qualche anno di “riposo”, si è rite-nuto fosse giunto il momento di attribuireall’area una funzione che la rendesse frui-bile al pubblico: è stata scelta la praticasportiva del golf in quanto ritenuta la piùsostenibile dal punto di vista ambientale.

Oggi, l’idea è quella di ampliare il campopratica esistente con la realizzazione di ungolf corse di 3 buche e una nuova strutturain accordo con i canoni della bioarchitet-tura da utilizzare non solo come clubhouse ma anche come Centro di documen-tazione permanente sull’attività estrattivae sul recupero ambientale.

Brett is an established construction andbuilding materials group and one of thelargest independents in the UK. In the lastfew years Brett expanded rapidly andemploys now around 1000 people in theUK and USA.

Brett owns a quarry in Lydd, nearDungeness in Kent which is situated adja-cent to Ministry of Defence (MOD) land.Brett has built up a relationship with themwhich led to the company becoming awareof the plans to create a Watermanship Lakeon the Lydd MOD land.

The lake was required primarily for armytraining purposes but would also be avai-lable to local community groups, such ascadets and scouts.

The restoration process was carried out inthree phases. The first phase was comple-ted with the formation of the lake. In thesecond phase the lake area was enlargedand the restoration process was improvedthrough the relocation of trees, shrubsand reeds. In the third phase theWatermanship Lake was made deeper atthe request of the MOD.

The created facilities have been used, bymore than 14.000 cadets and numerousother organizations including scouts.

The site is located in Werreaue in thenorth west of the city of Lage in Lippe, inthe administrative district of Detmold.

The excavation of sand and gravel tookplace over a period of 22 years (1968-1990). The excavation area had a size ofabout 16 hectares.

The recultivation was carried out simulta-neously with the excavation and wasaccomplished between 1990-1992.The transport connection of the site wascarried out from north via the Heerstrasseand through a road constructed for thatpurpose.

The specific characteristic of theWaddenhauser Lake is the variety of faci-lities and structures of biotopes that deve-loped after the rebuilding. Thedevelopment of the biotopes and the

banks are particularly impressive.

A bike and foot path around the site faci-litates recreation and the experience ofthe natural diversity.

The path is connected to a regional roadnetwork that connects the localities in theNorth with the city centre of Lage in theSouth.

The Waddenhauser Lake provides furtherpotential for development regarding theprotection of species and biotopes and hasan important role for local recreation.

Der Waddenhauser See ist eine ehemaligeSand-und Kiesabgrabung und befindetsich in der Werreaue am Nordwestrand derStadt Lage im Kreis Lippe.

Die Sand- und Kiesabgrabung wurde ineinem Zeitraum von etwa 22 Jahrendurchgeführt (1968-1990). Das Abbaufeldumfasste eine Größe von ca. 16 ha. DieRekultivierung wurde zeitgleich zumAbbaugeschehen durchgeführt und in denJahren 1990-1992 abgeschlossen. DieVerkehrsanbindung des Betriebsgeländeserfolgte von Norden über die Heerstraßesowie über eine für diesen Zweck ange-legte Baustraße.

Die Besonderheiten des WaddenhauserSees sind die durch die Errichtung entstan-denen Biotopstrukturen sowie dieNutzungsvielfalt. Bei der Biotopentwicklung

The quarry of Sorèze is situated nearToulouse in the south of Tarn departmentin a sensitive and complex environmentnear a Natura 2000 site.

Facing important ecological challenges,the company implemented a dialoguewith all the stakeholders and took advicefrom specialists.

Morillon Corvol worked closely withBirdlife who carried out the site monito-ring and proposed appropriate restoration.

The karstic network combined with thedeposit is monitored by a speleologist andsome adjustments are carried out follo-wing his advice.

Near to the quarry the Orival stream islocated. Therefore the company has madeevery effort to manage the treatment ofwater flow. The stream quality is monito-red by the Superior Fishing Counsel.

Morillon Corvol has in this way decreasedits environmental impacts and preventedpollution. A regular dialogue withCommunity Committee allows thecompany to consider the future of thisquarry on a long term basis.

Respecting a balance between environ-ment, society and economy, the Sorèzequarry is contributing towards sustainabledevelopment.

In 1995, GSM signed an agreement ofcooperation with the SMACOPI (associa-tion of regional authorities dealing withthe development of the coast of Picardy)in order to fit the shingle pit of Cayeux inits surrounding environment. Indeed, thatshingle pit is situated in the middle of theBaie de Somme, thus offering a realopportunity of development with naturaldimensions.

On October 21st 2004, after ten years ofactive consultations to reconcile theeconomic necessity of quarrying withconservation, the High Commission ofConservation Areas finally grantedpermission to perpetuate the quarryingactivity in the conservation area of the"Pointe du Hourdel" and of "Cap Hornu"for another 30 years.

En 1995, GSM signe une convention decoopération avec le Syndicat Mixted’Aménagement de la Côte Picarde(SMACOPI) dans le but d’intégrer la carrièrede Cayeux sur Mer dans son environne-ment. Cette carrière est en effet située aucœur de la Baie de Somme et offre à cetitre une véritable opportunité d’aménage-ment à vocation naturelle.

Après 10 ans de concertation active pourconcilier la nécessité économique représentéepar l’extraction en carrière et la sauvegardede l’environnement, ce partenariat a permisd’aboutir à la validation par la CommissionSupérieure des Sites le 21 octobre 2004 de lapérennisation de l’activité de carrière situéedans le périmètre de Classement au Titre desSites de la Pointe du Hourdel et du Cap Hornupour encore trente ans.
