Dear Colleagues,

It gives me great pleasure to present to you the first editionof Update, the new quarterly UEM Group newsletter. Withre-energised vision for the Group, I felt it apt to reflect thespirit of our people in this timely publication. Furnishedwith a strikingly fresh style and look, Update will be a tooland medium of communications within the Group.

MESSAGE

I strongly believe Update will not only be an informative and entertaining read for everyone, but also to provide an avenue to channel news

from and about the Group as well as to open doors for opinions and ideas.

UEM is now a more organised and focused group as a result of the successful financial restructuring exercise that was undertaken in the

previous two years. Overall, we saw an improvement in our financial performance in 2004. Notable revenue growth was seen in most of our

companies while others will have to continue to persevere to do better. I would like to take this opportunity to commend and thank all of you for

the hard work and cooperation that you have demonstrated in 2004, giving UEM Group a solid foundation for an even better year in 2005.

The year 2005 sees our Group with a new business plan to effectively make the most of our three key resources -

financial strength, assets and our people. Our greatest challenge is to ensure that all these resources are being managed

and optimised in ensuring greater synergies amongst our Group Companies. We must continue to strive to improve our

performance, both individually and at the company level. In today’s challenging world and the ever changing needs of the

of our customers, we must aim to lead and not follow to remain competitive and relevant. 2005 and the years to come

may be full of challenges, but as in every challenge, we must leap forward and seize the great opportunities that exist.

We must deliver our commitment to perform and give our utmost best.

As our country’s leading conglomerate in infrastructure development and partner in nation building, it is our

responsibility to set the right examples and live by our credo. Let us endeavour to be ahead of the industry by being

professional, competitive, innovative and proactive in providing quality services to our valued customers and partners.

Integrity, sincerity of intent, passion for success and teamwork are values that we should continue to reflect in ourselves

be it at work, home or play.

Early this year, we have acknowledged an excellent demonstration of these core values by our own colleagues who

accomplished an amazing feat of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Proof of sheer determination, passion and

teamwork, the expedition team returned in glory. Congratulations to the team! On that note, I hope that the passion and

dedication that was shown in conquering this challenge is shared by all and will be shown in facing everyday challenges,

especially at work. As illustrated in the front cover of this newsletter, we must as a team, strive with the aim of elevating

the UEM brand to a greater level and seize the opportunities that come our way.

Let us join hands and put our minds and hearts together and let our passion for success pave the way forward.

Yours sincerely,

Dato’ Ahmad Pardas SeninManaging Director/Chief Executive Officer

Datuk Abu Hassan bin KendutChairman

ABOUT GROWING UP...I grew up in a large family and both my parents were teachers, my motherresigned after a few years of teaching. I first went to a Malay school andtwo years later enrolled in an English school in Tampin. Education wasimportant in our family and with the exception of my eldest sister, whoonly had Malay education, the rest of us were given English education. My siblings consist of teachers, housewife, businessman, civil engineer, quantity surveyor and an artiste.

ABOUT CAREER...My interest and involvement in the field of accountancy was by sheer coincidence. I grew up in a rural environment where career guidance was

virtually absent. Most of us Senior Cambridge school leavers looked forward to become teachers as it was considered to be a very respectable job

during that period. I, on the other hand, was impressed by the civil servants at the district office. The government clerical staff was much

respected; getting VIP treatment at kampong kenduri’s and very smartly dressed.

After a few months of ‘menganggur’ I received an offer to join Dewan Latihan RIDA, a college set up by the government to help rural Malays to

study book-keeping and secretarial practice. In 1961, I was selected to be an Articled Clerk with Messrs. Turquand Youngs and Co. pursuing the

Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants qualifications. In 1971, I joined Malaysian Airlines System Bhd as its Accounts Manager and

became a member of the team tasked to set up the airline. As my interest was more professional practice, I then joined Messrs. Cooper & Lyrand as a

Junior Partner in 1974. I retired from the firm in 1997 as a Senior Partner.

During my professional life, I was very much involved in the activities of the Institute, namely, in membership, technical and examination

committees. I became its president for the period from 1984 to 1986 and the Asean Federation of Accountants for 1987. A year after my

retirement, I stayed as a member of Corporate Debt Restructuring Committee (CDRC) for two years and subsequently joined the board of

Khazanah Nasional Berhad and also became its an EXCO chairman. The rest is history.

ABOUT FAMILY...Zubaidah and I got married in 1971 and we are blessed with 4 boys, the youngest is currently 18 years old. We also have a granddaughter from the marriage

of our eldest son.

ABOUT LIFE...I place great importance in keeping fit and healthy. I used to play a lot of tennis when I was young, but now I occupy my time with mostly golf. I’m 63 now

and I still jog. I’m a regular jogger and in fact I jog for an hour or so at least two or three times a week. No matter where I am, doesn’t matter if it's 6 o’clock

in the morning or 10 o’clock at night, I still put on my jogging shoes and shorts and find time to jog. I find the time to balance my time with work and

maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As for golf, Zubaidah has a lower handicap than mine. But while I can still enjoy it, I enjoy it.

ABOUT THE FUTURE...I consider myself very lucky, to have achieved as much as I have in this lifetime. I am thankful to Allah SWT for what I have achieved. I don’t want to burden

myself with too many responsibilities anymore. I want to maintain the balance in my life, a bit of work, the spiritual side of life and god willing, good health.

I hope to be able to continue to play a lot more golf. Hopefully, I can reduce my handicap lower than Zubaidah.

We foresee the potential in InnoHerb and endeavour to worktowards identifying and introducing new pharmaceuticals technologyfrom the world over to develop the local traditional medicines.”

InnoHerb utilises innovative Phytogranules® technology; an advancedpatented French technology of tiny, enhanced-release herbal pallets. Each InnoHerb capsule encases Phytogranules® microbeads whichmeasure 1mm or less in diameter, and contains standardisedconcentrations of active compounds from herbal extracts.

AGAINST ALL ODDS

K I L I M A N J A R OEXPEDITION2005

:17Was the climb worth the effort? “Yes, definitely, 100%,” enthused Zafrul.“The climb really tested our semangat or fighting spirit as we had to keeppushing ourselves despite the freezing cold, no matter how tired we were, especially on summit day when the terrain became really steep anddifficult. It was also a privilege to be able to enjoy the rugged beauty of themountain, something that not everyone has the chance to do.”

“Kilimanjaro really is a beautiful mountain,” added Rene’e, “withbreathtaking scenery ranging from the moorlands at Shira Plateau to thesnowfields and glaciers at the summit. Like all mountains, the weather canchange abruptly but although we had a few hailstorms on the way up, wewere lucky to enjoy good weather at Stella Point and at Uhuru Peak.”

Having accomplished their mission to conquer the mountain known as theRoof of Africa, what does the team intend to do next?

“We are in the midst of proposing another Expedition for 2006. Althoughwe cannot confirm anything at this time, some of us are giving seriousthought to climbing other high altitude mountains such as Aconcagua inSouth America!” Kabie said.

In the meantime, all UEM Group staff can look forward to sharing theteam’s Kilimanjaro experience through a series of presentations andmotivational talks, which will be organised over the coming months.

“Determination and commitment – these are the qualities that weredemanded of us on Kilimanjaro and these are the qualities we hope toinspire in our UEM colleagues and friends when we tell them about theUEM Kilimanjaro Expedition 2005,” said Rene’e. “With enoughdetermination and the commitment to see things through to the end, there is no limit to what we can achieve!”

The objective of the expedition was to promote UEM Group’s core values of achieving gratification andexcellence not only at work but also in our personal lives.

The 5-member team comprising breast cancer survivor Rene’e Aziz Ahmad (PLUS ExpresswaysBerhad), Khairul Ariffin ‘Kabie’ Ibrahim (UEM Group), Zafrul Shamry Abdul Karim (ProjekPenyelenggaraan Lebuhraya Berhad), Zulkifli Kamarolzaman (UEM Construction Sdn Bhd) and P.Thomas Simon (UEM Builders Berhad) began the 100-km hike through the scenic terrain of theMachame Route on 22 January, 2005.

On 26 January at approximately 9:45 a.m., Kabie and Rene’e succeeded in reaching Uhuru Peak, thehighest point in all of Africa, standing at 5,895 meters or 19,340 feet. When asked about the challengesfaced by the expedition team leader Rene’e explained that the greatest difficulty was in overcoming theeffects of the cold weather and high altitude. “Zafrul and Zul managed to reach Stella Point on thecrater rim at 5,685 meters and were just two hours away from reaching Uhuru Peak. But they wereboth suffering from fatigue and altitude sickness and had to make the difficult decision to turn backwithout attempting the final ascent to the peak. Even Kabie, who was first to arrive at Uhuru Peak, began coughing up blood soon after and had to be brought down quickly to a lower elevation.
