UEFA EURO 2012 Volunteers Team

A volunteer story ... I volunteered in the World Cup 2010 in South Africa and that was the most amazing experience in my life. Actually, I didn’t know before that a person from any country all over the world can become a volunteer for such a big scale event because volunteering is not especially popular in Egypt. The story started when I found out that I can apply for the world cup. I did, and the application took 30 minutes and honestly I did not expect to be chosen. Two months prior the event, I received a phone call from the South African Embassy in Cairo, asking me to come for an interview which I passed and that was a moment when my dream came true. I was assigned as Spectator Services where my job was to be inside the

stadium of Green Point, Cape Town. I remember the first time I got inside the stadium ten days before the event and I almost slept on the football pitch. It was an unbelievable feeling! I met volunteers from all around the world (USA, Italy, Canada, Peru, Germany, South Africa, Austria, Poland, etc.). One of the best stories happened to me at the stadium that I was the only one volunteer who spoke Arabic and that is why during the game between England and Algeria the marketing manager called me to help them understand the banners and ads rising above the fans in order to avoid any probable misunderstandings could occur. That was one of the best moments in my life. After my experience in the World Cup, I came back to Egypt and I was surprised that all the national TV channels wanted to interview me because I was the only Egyptian volunteer in the World Cup 2010 which made me so proud of myself and my country. A great end to a great experience. I wish I can repeat this story again in UEFA EURO 2012 and gain more experience!

Hassan El Kamah, World Cup 2010 volunteer, South Africa.

It would have been impossible to stage the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011 without the enthusiastic support of volunteers. Due to their wide-ranging contact with visitors, volunteers were vital ambassadors for the event. Their helpfulness and friendliness helped to create a positive lasting impression of the tournament. Around 4,000 volunteers were recruited to assist with running the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011.
