UDLMeeting the needs of all learners
EDUC 7109 – Dr. McPherson
Pamela Graydon
Spring 2014
What is Universal Design for Learning?
UDL is a design for
instruction and classroom
that includes all learners.
Inclusive education, or inclusion, has been globally recognized as a goal foreducational systems around the world (Curcic, 2009; Katz, 2012b).
Learning Environment
• A classroom that has students that are regular education, exceptional needs, and learning disabilities
• The teacher applies UDL principles to meet the needs of all students
• through differentiation
• through modification
• through rigor and engagement
• Traditionally, the teacher would use resources such as manipulatives, large print, flashcards, leveled readers, etc.
Three Principals of UDL
• Recognition
• How information is taught• Students make connections,
understand, and process.
• Strategy
• How students process information• Students ability to summarize
what they have learned
• Application of skills
• Affect
• How students apply new information• Engaging in real world scenarios
• Relating information
• Application becomes routine
Three Principals of UDL: What it means
• Recognition
• Multiple formats to represent information
• Strategy
• Provide practice• Guided
• Supported • Affect
• Leveled or scaffold instruction
• Provide incentives
• Student selected content
How does it work?Impact on Learning
• Collaboration
• Analysis of student interests, strengths,
and weaknesses
• Instructional strategies that provide
equal access to learning for every
student
Technology & UDL
“The use of digital technologies allows for the implementation of inclusive instructional strategies by providing multiple means of
representation, action and expression, and engagement, based on the Universal Design
Learning (UDL) framework.” (Pellerin, 2013).
