The background and objectiveThe background and objectiveThe International Conference of LabourStatisticians (ICLS) meets about every 5 years

- authoritative forum for establishinginternational standards on labour statistics

- promotes international comparability of

labour dataThe First ICLS was convened in 1923 and thelast, the Seventeenth (17th), in 2003. Thenext,18th ICLS, is likely to be organised in

late-2008.ICLS has estalished landmark body of statisticalstandards, e.g. on employment statistics,consumer price indices and informal sector

work.

The 17th ICLS in 2003 stressed the need todevelop a precise international statisticaldefinition of child labour, including hazardouswork, and methodological guidelines to ensure

comparability across countries and over time.

There was unanimous support from theConference for the development of a resolution

on child labour statistics for presentation atthe next ICLS.
