OVERVIEW The two-day conference is designed to provide a unique opportunity to hear UCSF Transplant experts present a comprehensive review and update on recent advances in adult and pediatric transplantation. Leaders in the field will share their medical and surgical expertise in solid organ transplant and living donor topics. Plenary sessions include the future of transplantation, the changing transplant population, management of post-transplant infections, and other contemporary and controversial topics. Organ-specific clinical tracks will focus on current issues and patient management strategies appropriate for each area of specialization. This program has been coordinated through the University of California, San Francisco, Division of Abdominal Transplant Surgery and the Heart and Lung Transplant Program.

GREENER MEETING We’re saving paper! The syllabus will be transmitted electronically after the course.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target audience is a broad cross-section of health care professionals who care for pre- and post-transplant patients. Heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation will be discussed. The symposium content is designed for community/referring physicians, transplant nurses, coordinators, administrators, advanced health providers, pharmacists, social workers, and all members of the transplant health care team who are interested in improving their clinical practice or patient management during transplantation.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this symposium, the participant will be able to:

• Discuss cultural issues and how they impact organ donation;

• Improve knowledge and treatment of transplant related complications and infections;

• Apply new research in the management of pediatric solid organ transplant recipients;

• Discuss the latest research being conducted on the treatment of rejection across the spectrum of solid organ transplantation;

• Improve pediatric transitions such as immunosuppression minimization and conversion from pediatric to adult clinic;

• Report on the latest research in the prevention of rejection in kidney transplant and HCC treatment;

• Communicate the impact of obesity on the potential transplant recipient;

• Increase the Community Health Care Provider’s (CHCP) understanding of the impact of transplantation on the lives of patients, their families and the donor families;

• Improve knowledge on living donation, paired exchange and explore incentives for living donors;

• Appropriately use Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in the management of heart/lung transplant.
