THE GAME: The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team (6-1) makesitsfirst-everappearanceintheJimmyVClassic,challengingNorthCarolina State, the team most closely associated with late coach Jim Valvano, in Madison Square Garden. The game will be the second game of the Jimmy V Classic doubleheader, following Georgetown vs. Texas. Both games will be televised by ESPN. UConn, led by the guard tandem of junior Shabazz Napier (18.6 ppg) and sophomore Ryan Boatright (13.7 ppg, 4.9 apg), is coming off a 61-53 win over New Hampshire Thursday. North Carolina State (4-2), ranked No. 18 as of the Nov. 26 polls, suffered a 79-72 loss at Michigan on Nov. 27. The Wolfpack is led by freshman T.J. Warren (15.3 ppg) and senior Richard Howell (14.2 ppg).

As the 2012-13 NBA season began, there were 12 former University of Connecticut players on nine different NBA rosters, totaling a combined 75 years of NBA experience. The UConn dynamic dozen are led by Ray Allen (Heat), beginning his 17th NBA sea-son, Richard Hamilton (Bulls), starting his 14th year, and Caron Butler (Clippers), entering his 11th NBA season. The nine other former Huskies on NBA rosters include Emeka Okafor (Wizards) and Ben Gordon (Bobcats), each starting his 9th year, Charlie Villanueva (Pistons), beginning his 8th year, Rudy Gay (Grizzlies), enter-ing his 7th season, Hasheem Thabeet (Thunder) and A.J. Price (Wizards), each in his 4th year, and Kemba Walker (Bobcats) starting his 2nd NBA season. Beginning their rookie seasons are two of last year’s UConn starters, Jeremy Lamb (Thunder) and Andre Drummond (Pistons).

Jimmy V and UConn While the late Jim Val-vano, for whom the Jimmy V Classic is named, is most closely associated with North Carolina State as a collegiate coach, he also had a strong connection with the University of Connecticut, wherehelandedhisfirstfulltimeDivi-sion I coaching job. After his graduation from Rutgers, Valvano coached one year (1969-70) at Division III Johns Hopkins, then learned that UConn coach Dee Rowe had an opening on his staff. The two met, had an instant connection, and Rowe hired Valvano on July, 1970. It was the beginning of a close friend-ship that lasted until Valvano’s death in

1993. Valvano coached two seasons at UConn, ironi-cally, the only two losing seasons of Rowe’s head coaching career. “I used to speak at dinners honoring Jim,

and all these people would get up and say what a great coach he was,” joked Rowe, now a special adviser for athlet-ics at UConn. “And I would say, ‘He isn’t that great. Those were two of the worst years I ever had in coaching.’ He was great at keeping me from jumping into the Connecticut River.” Valvano left UConn in 1972 to be-come the head coach at Bucknell, then moved on to Iona, and to N.C. State.

UCONN AT MSG: UConn has an overall record of 57-50 in games it has played at Madison Square Garden. Under Coach Jim Calhoun in the past 26 years, the Huskies’ record at the Garden was 51-35 and they have won eight championships in the building --- the 1988 NIT Championship, as well as BIG EAST Tournament Championships in 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2011. Under Coach Calhoun, UConn was 8-8 in 16 regular-season games against St. John’s, 35-19 in BIG EAST Tournament games, and 8-8 in other tournament play there. In UConn’s last appearance at Madison Square Garden, they lost to Syracuse, 58-55, in the quarterfinalsoftheBIGEASTTournamentonMarch 8, 2012.

UCONN ON ESPN/ESPN2: Tonight, UConn will be playing its 236th game on ESPN/ESPN2 since 1986-87, the start of the Jim Calhoun era. The Huskies have a record of 147-88 (.626) in those games. UConn is 1-0 on ESPN this season, having topped Michigan State, 66-62, in its season opener. Tonight’s game is one of 10 regular-season UConn games which be be televised on ESPN/ESPN2 and one of 14 regular-season UConn games on the ESPN family of networks this season.

RECEIVING VOTES: UConn was among “Others Receiving Votes” in both the the AP Top 25 poll and the ESPN/USA Today poll for the week of Nov. 26. COACHING EXPERIENCE: This may be Kevin Ollie’s firstseasonastheheadcoachof UConn, but that doesn’t mean that the Huskies’ coaching staff lacks head coaching experience. Between Associate Head Coach Glen Miller, Assistant Coach George Blaney, and Assistant Coach Karl Hobbs, the UConn staff boasts a combined 57 years of head coaching experience and a combined total of 860 victories. Plus, every member of Coach Ollie’s staff --- also including Director of Basketball Administration Kevin Freeman and Assistant Director Ricky Moore --- owns a UConn National Championship ring.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: UConn junior Shabazz NapierwasnamedthefirstBIG EAST Player of the Week of the season. Napier led the Huskies to four victories to open the season, averaging 20.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in wins over Michigan State, Vermont, Wake Forest, and Quinnipiac. It is the firstsuchhonorforNapier,whowasnamedtothe All-BIG EAST Preseason Second Team.

SECOND-HALF SPLASH: Napier has been outstanding in the second half of UConn’s seven games so far this season. The junior guard from Roxbury, Mass., is averaging a robust 14.1 points in the second half of play, plus overtimes, in UConn’s seven games. He is also shooting an impressive .500 from the floor(27-54),.440from3-pointrange(11-25),and a sizzling .919 from the foul line (34-37) in the second half. Overall, Napier leads the Huskies in scoring at 18.6 points per game.

WINNING AT THE LINE: Coming down the home stretch in games, UConn has been very impressive at the foul line. In the last 10 minutes of games plus overtimes, the Huskies are 63 of 68 (.926) from the foul line. In the lastfiveminutesofgamesplusovertimes,theHuskies are 54 of 57 (.947) from the line.

LAST TIME OUT: UConn won its second consecutive game and sixth in seven games this year with a grind-it-out 61-53 win over New Hampshire. The Huskies outrebounded ateamforthefirsttimethisseason,43-40,but the Huskies had their worst shooting night of the season at 36.8 percent. Still, they held New Hampshire to 30.6 percentand never lost the lead. Sophomore Ryan Boatright led the scoring with a season-high 19 points, while freshman Omar Calhoun added career-highs of 16 points and 8 rebounds. Junior DeAndre Daniels had 10 rebounds, UConn’s first double-figure rebounder in agame this season.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: UConn held New Hampshire to a just 30.6 percent shooting in its 61-53 victory on Nov. 29, the sixth time in seven games this season

With four starters returning from last season’s 24-13 NCAA Sweet 16 team, North Carolina State was rated among the Top 10 in virtually every preseason college basketballpoll.Afterthefirstmonthoftheseason,theWolfpackstand4-2andremains among the Top 25. NC State has wins over Miami (Ohio), Penn State, UMass and UNC Asheville, and has lost to Oklahoma State and Michigan. The Wolfpack feature a balanced scoring attack in which six players are averaging doublefigures.FreshmanforwardT.J.Warren,whodidnotstartagameuntillastweek against Michigan, leads the scoring (15.3), with senior forward Richard Howell (14.2) close behind. Junior forward C.J. Leslie (11.7), senior forward Scott Wood (10.5), junior guard Lorenzo Brown (10.5), and freshman guard Rodney Purvis (10.0) aretheotherdouble-figurescorers.Howell(7.8)andLeslie(7.5)aretheleadingrebounders, while Brown (6.0) is the top assist man. Wood and Purvis are the top three-point threats for the Wolfpack. NC State’s strong inside game has led to the team shooting a solid 52.5 percent fromthefloorandtheteamisaveraging78.8pointspergame.

in which the Huskies held their opponents under 40 percent. UConn held Michigan State to 37.5 percent shooting for the game, on its way to a 66-62 victory. Against Vermont, the Huskies were even more stingy, holding the Catamounts to 30.0 percent shooting. Quinnipiac was the third opponent in four games held under 40 percent shooting, hitting just 39.4 percent. Even in the loss to New Mexico, UConn held the Lobos to 39.6 percentfromthefloor.UConnheldStonyBrookto 37.7 percent in the game before playing New Hampshire. For the season, UConn is holding opponents to 37.6 percent and 63.7 points per game. Facey, Samuel Sign Letters of Intent University of Connecticut men’s basketball Coach Kevin Ollie hasannouncedthatthebasketballofficehasreceivedsignedNational Letters of Intent from forward Kentan Facey and guard Terrence Samuel to attend UConn and join the bas-ketball program beginning with the 2013-14 academic year. Both student-athletes hail from the greater New York City area --- Facey, who attends Long Island Lutheran High School, is from Glen Head on Long Island and Samuel, who attends South Shore High School, is from Brooklyn. They have been teammates in the well-known N.Y. Rens AAU program. “I’m elated to have both of these young men sign a Letter of Intent with our program,” Ollie said. “They are high-char-acter people and quality basketball players. I know they will both have great senior seasons at their high schools and we can’t wait until they get to Storrs this summer and become part of our family.” Facey is a 6-9, 195-pound forward who was born and raised in Trelawny, Jamaica. A solid shot-blocker and rebounder, Facey helped Lutheran post a 23-6 record and capture the Federation Class A championship last year. It was during last summer’s AAU circuit, however, that Facey made a name for himself as one of the most improved rising seniors, starring in tournaments as well as individual skills camps. He is ranked among the Top 100 in the class of 2013. Samuel, a 6-4, 180-pound point guard, has established himself as one of the top point guards in New York City under South Shore Coach Michael Beckles. The UConn Huskies and North Carolina State Wolfpack have only met four times in history and have equally split the meetings.

On Feb. 16, 1991, North Carolina State came into Gampel Pavilion and nipped the Huskies, 60-59, one of only four non-conference losses UConn has ever suffered in its on-campus facility.

UConn returned the favor on Dec. 5, 1992, as the Huskies traveled to Ra-leigh, N.C., and defeated the Wolfpack, 81-74.

the NCAA Tournament.

UConn defeated North Carolina State, 77-74, on March 17, 2002, in the second round of the 2002 NCAA tourney in the East Regional at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. Caron Butler had 34 points and 9 rebounds, while Tony Robertson added 18 points. The Huskies went on to reach the East Regional championship game before bowing to eventual national champion Maryland.

North Carolina State won the last meeting between the teams, 65-62, on March 20, 2005, in the second round of the NCAA Syracuse Regional at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. The Wolfpack had four players score doublefigures,ledby17fromJuliusHodge. UConn was led by 22 points from Marcus Williams and 16 from Charlie Villanueva.

HOME COOKIN’: UConn continued its perfect record of home openers at Gampel Pavilion with a 67-49 victory over Vermont on Nov. 13. Since the building opened in 1990, the Huskies have never lost a season opener at Gampel, winning 24 straight. Against Vermont, UConn had a balanced scoring attack, led by junior Shabazz Napier with 13 points, freshman Omar Calhoun with 12, grad student R.J. Evans with 11, and sophomore Ryan Boatright and junior Tyler Olander with 9 points each. Olander also contributed 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocked shots in a solid all-around performance.

QUITE A START: UConn opened the regular-season with a win that shocked the college basketball world, upsetting then-No. 14 Michigan State, 66-62, on Nov. 9 in the first Armed Forces Classic on the Ramstein Air Base in southwest Germany. The Huskies came out of the gate on fire, hitting 11 of their first12 shots and building a 16-point

lead before settling for a 40-33 halftime advantage. Michigan State worked its way back in the second half, taking a 58-56 lead with 5:43 remaining. But consecutive three-pointers by Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright put UConn in front for good and four straight free throwsbyNapierinthefinal13seconds sealed the win. Napier led the Huskies with 25 points, while Boatright had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals, and DeAndre Daniels added 12 points and 8 rebounds.

CALLED FOR TRAVELING: The UConn basketball team began the 2012-13 season with a 15-day stretch that included throusands of miles of travel. The Huskies returned on Nov. 10 from a 7,800-mile round trip to Ramstein, Germany, where they began regular-season play with a 66-62 upset victory over nationally-ranked Michigan State. Following the home opener against Vermont on Nov. 13, UConn boarded another plane two days later for a roughly 1,700-mile trip to St. Thomas of the U.S.

Virgin Islands to compete in the 2012 Paradise Jam Tournament. That’s another 3,400 miles in the books, upping the total to about 11,200 miles traveled in just over two weeks. Tonight’s game will be the Huskies’ last game away from home until the start of the BIG EAST season on Jan. 1.

No matter when it may have occurred, replacing legendary UConn men’s basket-ball coach Jim Calhoun was going to be an overwhelming challenge. Not only would the incomingcoachhavetotrytofilltheshoesof a Hall of Famer and one of the country’s mostwell-knownfiguresonthesidelines,buthe also would be entrusted with maintaining the excellence of a program that had cap-tured three National Championships, made four Final Four appearances, and earned 17 Big East titles in the past 23 years. Kevin Ollie accepted that responsibility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in UConn basketball his-tory. Ollie’s UConn his tory --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. Ollie takes over one of the top college programs in the country after just two sea-sons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possessing a wealth of basketball knowledge afterlearningfromsomeofthefinestteach-ers to ever coach the game, including Chuck Daly, Larry Brown, and George Karl. “After 13 years in the NBA, Kevin’s got a PhD in basketball,” Calhoun said as he passed the torch to his former point guard. “He’s a great basketball man and an even better person. I’m very proud of him.” The reins to the Huskies could not have been handed to anyone who wanted them more than Ollie. “This is my dream job. I was made for this job,” Ollie said on the day he was hired. “UConn is a special, special place and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but right here.” Ollie made that same decision about UConn more than 20 years ago, coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles. Playing on some of Calhoun’s finest teamsduring the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, av-eraging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-BIG EAST pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the BIG EAST Conference and made three NCAA Tourna-ment appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a daz-zling 32-4 in the BIG EAST, capturing two

BIG EAST regular-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively. Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a

never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. “One time, I was cut on Christmas Eve,” said Ollie. “What a Christmas present that was.” Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an out-standingteammate,withstrongmoralfiber,impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paidoff with a multi-year contract from the Philadelphia 76ers. Ollie had been brought to Cleveland to men-tor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional and Oklahoma City brought him in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 dif-ferent NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach. “He’s a great kid, a great team-mate, he was great to be around,” Larry Brown, who coached Ollie in Philadelphia, said in a Hartford Cou-rant story about Ollie. “He was a mentor to our young players. Like all of the players I coached who had been with Calhoun, he ac-cepted coaching the right way, he allowed you to make him better.” It was Brown, in fact, whose advice Ollie sought when he was offered the position on Calhoun’s staff in 2010. “I know he was thinking about going back to Oklahoma City [as a player],” said Brown, now the head coach at SMU of the BIG EAST, “and I told him, ‘You know you want to coach eventually. What better opportunity than to go back to your school, and with your coach, who loves you?’ Two years with [Calhoun], Kevin has all the preparation he needs.” Ollie couldn’t have had a more success-ful debut season to his coaching career, as

he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. Last year culminated in another NCAA ap-pearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. “Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be all about. When you say that about somebody, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy. Any time you need a person who won’t quit, there’s your guy.” This season, Ollie will use his basketball knowledgeasaheadcoachforthefirsttime,but his coaching philosophy is about more than the game. “I want to get victories, but I also want to present our team the way it should be pre-sented --- with strength, with character, with discipline, with focus, with an appetite and the integrity to get better,” Ollie said. “It’s not about Xs and Os, it’s not about winning and losing, it’s about these men becoming special people. Glen MillerAssociate Head Coach Beginning his 10th season overall on the UConn staff, and his third since he re-turned to UConn in 2010-11, Glen Miller will assume the duties of Associate Head Coach under new Head Coach Kevin Ollie. Miller rejoined Coach Jim Calhoun’s UConn staff in 2010-11 as Director of Bas-ketball Administration following 17 years of head coaching experience at Connecticut College, Brown University, and the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania. Last year, he moved into the role of fulltime assistant coach and was an integral part of practice work, game strategy, and recruiting. Miller’s Division I head coaching experi-ence began at Brown in 1999-2000, where his teams set school records for wins in a two-,three-,four-,andfive-yearspan,aswell as most Ivy League wins in a season. He recruited and developed 10 all-confer-ence players and the League’s 2004 Player of the Year. Following seven years in Providence, Miller was hired as head coach of the pres-tigious program at Penn in 2006. He led the Quakers to the Ivy League Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006-

07, setting the school record for most Ivy League wins by a first-year coach. He spent three full years and part of a fourth as the Penn head coach. Previous to taking over at Brown, Miller enjoyed a highly-successful span as head coach at Division III Connecticut College. In six seasons, beginning in 1993, Miller led Conn College to unprecedented heights, in-cluding a 28-1 record, a No. 3 national rank-ing, and a berth in the Division III Final Four in 1998-99. In 17 seasons as a head coach, Miller com-piled 233 victories. A native of Groton, Conn., where he starred at Fitch High School, Miller played for two seasons at UConn, then played two sea-sons for Calhoun at Northeastern. He joined Calhoun’s first staff at UConn in 1986 andworked with the Huskies for seven seasons before being named head coach at Conn Col-lege in 1993. Born 8/20/1961, Miller and his wife Yvonne reside inMansfield and are the parents offour children: Tony, Genelle, Jillian (a UConn junior), and Emma.

Bringing a wealth of coaching experience to Coach Kevin Ollie’s staff, George Blaney is beginning his 12th season at UConn and has logged over 43 years as a college coach. He served as associate head coach for the past five seasons at UConn, tak-ing charge of the team on those occasions when Jim Calhoun was incapacitated. Since Blaney joined UConn, the Hus-kies have a 278-102 record, captured six BIG EAST championships, made 10 NCAA appearances, three trips to the Final Four, and won two national championships. Blaney, a 2003 inductee into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, brought more than 30 years of coaching experience with him when he came to UConn, includ-ing two seasons at Stonehill, three years at Dartmouth, and 22 years at Holy Cross, his alma mater, where he won 357 games, posted seven 20-win seasons, and made eight postseason appearances. He also was head coach for three years at Seton Hall in the BIG EAST before leaving to become the Vice President of Basketball Operations for the International Basketball League. Blaney returned to college coach-

ing in 2000-01 as an assistant coach at the Uni-versity of Rhode Island before joining Calhoun at UConn the fol-lowing year. In 30 years as a collegiate head coach, Blaney compiled an impressive 461-383 overall record. A native of Jersey City, N.J., Blaney was an All-New England player at Holy Cross, where he scored 1,012 points. After he graduated in 1961, he was drafted in the fourth round of the NBA Draft by the N.Y. Knicks and played the 1961-62 season with the team. Born 11/12/1939, Blaney and his wife Maryellen have two daughters and three sons, and seven grandchildren.

Karl HobbsAssistantCoach Karl Hobbs, who spent eight years as a UConn as-sistant coach from 1993-2001 and helped the Huskies win eight BIG EAST cham-pionships and the 1999 NCAA title, returned to Storrs last sea-son as Director of Basketball Administration and will again become a fulltime assistant on Kevin Ollie’s staff. Hobbs had spent the previous 10 years as the head coach at George Washington Uni-versity, leading the Colonials to two Atlantic 10 Tournament championships, a regular-seasontitle,andfivestraightpostseasonap-pearances, including three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. He was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2005-06, and notched 166 wins while at GWU. Hobbs began his coaching career as a six-year assistant at Boston University before joining Calhoun’s UConn staff. While Hobbs was at UConn, he was instrumental in the recruitment of such Husky stars as Richard Hamilton, Caron Butler, and Emeka Okafor. The Huskies had a record of 216-56 while Hobbs was on the staff. Out of Roxbury, Mass., Hobbs was named Massachusetts Schoolboy Player of the Year in 1979-80 after leading Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School to the state high school championship. Hobbs was a four-year starting point guard for UConn (1980-84), where he served as team captain and was an All-BIG EAST selection as a senior. He led the team in assists all four years and still ranks fifthontheall-timelist. Born 8/7/1961, Hobbs and wife JoAnn are the parents of two daughters, RaShauna and Kaliah.

Kevin FreemanDirector of Basketball Administration Kevin Freeman takes over as UConn’s Director of Basketball Administration after serving for one year as the Assistant Director under Hobbs. Freeman, a former UConn captain and the program’s all-time leader in games played (140), came back to Storrs last year after playing 11 seasons of professional basket-ball in Italy, Australia, Greece, South Korea, China, Puerto Rico, Spain and Venezuela. Freeman, a native of Springfield,Mass.,was an all-state performer at Paterson (N.J.) Catholic before his stellar career at UConn. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1999 BIG EAST Championship and se-lected to the 1999 NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team as an invaluable starter on UConn’sfirstNationalChampionshipteam.

During Free-man’s career, the Huskies compiled a 109-32 record, made three NCAA a p p e a r a n c e s , reaching the Elite Eight in 1998 and winning the na-tional crown in 1999. He is No. 17 on UConn’s all-time scoring list with 1,476 points, No. 8 on the all-time rebounding list with 913, and earned his de-gree in 2006. Born 3/3/1978, Freeman and his wife Ni-cole are the parents of a daughter, Kekoa, and a son, Sire.

Ricky MooreAsst. Director of Basketball Administration RickyMoore, co-captainofUConn’s firstnational championship men’s team in 1999, joins Coach Kevin Ollie’s staff this season as the Assistant Director of Basketball Admin-istration. Moore, a 1999 UConn graduate with a de-gree in community program development, comes back to Storrs after serving as an as-sistant basketball coach at Dartmouth Col-lege for the past two seasons, following his retirement from an 11-year career in profes-sional basketball. Moore played professionally for 11 years in fivecountries ---Austria,Ukraine,Sweden,Turkey, and Germany --- as well as in the Continental Basketball Association and the NBA Developmental League. During Moore’s four seasons at UConn, the Huskies compiled an overall record of 114-24 and a BIG EAST mark of 55-17, win-ning three BIG EAST regular-season champi-

onships, three BIG EAST tournament championships, and reaching the 1996 NCAA Sweet 16, the 1998 NCAA Elite, and capturing the 1999 NCAA Cham-pionship. He was a three-time co-cap-tain and his 510 as-sists still rank sixth on the all-time list. He was named to the 1999 Final Four and West Regional All-Tournament Teams and Basketball News Magazine selected him the National Defensive Player of the Year. In 2001, he was named to UConn’s All-Century Team. Originally from Augusta, Ga., Moore was born April 10, 1976. He and wife Heather are the parents of two children, daughter Kend-yll, 6, and son R.J., 4.
