SECOND LIFE VIEWER INSTALLATION

Q: When I install Second Life I get an error saying: Second Life cannot be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed. (Mac)

A: Go to your system preferences; to the 'security and privacy' section. On the 'general' tab there, after clicking the lock at the bottom of the window and entering your password, you can set your system so it will accept apps downloaded from anywhere (and not just the mac app store).

Q: During the Second Life installation I get an error saying: Error opening file for writing. (Pc)

A: Turn off your firewall and virus scanner and start the installation again.

LOGIN

Q: I can’t login to Second Life. I get an error message saying: The system is logging you out.

A: This happens when a person crashes and his avatar is still online for the system, this is called ghosting. When you try to log back in, the system needs time to log your avatar out. This is why you get the message that you can't login for the next 5-10 minutes. Please try again after 10 minutes and you should be able to login just fine.

Q: I can’t login to Second Life. I get an error message saying: We’re having trouble connecting. There might be a problem with your internet connection or the Second Life grid.

A: 1. Check your internet connection. If you have a normal internet connection try the Teleport button on the bottom of the error message.

2. Restart your modem and computer, wait 10 minutes and try again.

3. Please download a new copy of the Second Life viewer from: https://dszgqm4n1rmsp.cloudfront.net/packages/Second_Life_edu_3_8_4_304417_i686_Setup.exe (PC) or https://dszgqm4n1rmsp.cloudfront.net/packages/Second_Life_edu_3_8_4_304417_i386.dmg (MAC) and install it.

Q: I am trying to log in to Second life but it will not load past region handshake.

A: 1. Check your internet connection. If you have a normal internet connection try the Teleport button on the bottom of the error message.

2. Restart your modem and computer, wait 10 minutes and try again.

Best is to use the computers on the 2nd & 3rd floor of the Dirac Library, the computers there (except from the older PCs) have the Second Life viewer installed. ORIENTATION

Q: I don’t see my HUD

A: Click ‘yes’ on the pop-up message that appears in the right upper corner of your screen. If you don’t see the message click the envelop icon in the right upper corner of your screen, click on the CNDG Experience notification and click ‘yes’.

Q: I can’t see the signs / All signs are grey.

A: 1. The environment takes some time to load in, if you still don’t see the signs after 5 minutes click CTRL +P, click the ‘Setup’ tab on the left side of the Preference window and set the Maximum bandwidth to 1500 kbps. After that click the ‘Advanced’ tab on the left side of the Preference window and set the Cache size to 2048 MB. Click OK at the bottom of the preference window and log out and back in.

If you can’t go to campus please try to restart your modem and if possible connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable.

Q: I can’t read the signs.

A: Hover your mouse over the middle of the sign, hold down the ALT button and left click. You can now zoom in and out on the sign using your scroll wheel. If you don’t have a scroll wheel click the Camera controls button on the bottom of your screen and use the middle +/- slider to zoom in and out. When you are done reading the sign hit the Esc. key twice to bring your camera back to your avatar.

Q: My Profile won’t load / I can’t change my display name.

A: Go ahead and start the Orientation, you can try to change your display name again after you finished reading the signs. If it still doesn’t work you can try logging out and back in.

Q: Is there any way that I can change my username?

A: You can’t change your username, but you can change your display name by clicking the profile button on the bottom of your screen and click edit profile at the top of the profile window.

Q: How do I Landmark a place?

A: 1. At the top of your screen click the ‘Star icon’ at the end of the address bar.

2. In the top menu click ‘World’ and select ‘Landmark This Place’.

Q: My avatar is a white cloud. How do I change it?

A: 1. In the top menu click ‘Me’ and select ‘Choose an avatar’, click the ‘Classic’ tab on the window that opened and select one of the avatars.

HUD

Q: My HUD did not appear.

A: Give it some time. If it doesn’t appear after 5 minutes try logging out and back in.

Q: My HUD is black.

A: 1. Left click in the center of the HUD

2. Click the play button in the top right corner of your screen next to the volume icon ...if it's a pause button click it twice.

3. Log out and back in.

Q: My HUD is black and I got an error message saying media plugin failed.

A: Please download a new copy of the Second Life viewer from: https://dszgqm4n1rmsp.cloudfront.net/packages/Second_Life_edu_3_8_4_304417_i686_Setup.exe (PC) or https://dszgqm4n1rmsp.cloudfront.net/packages/Second_Life_edu_3_8_4_304417_i386.dmg (MAC) and install it. Make sure to turn off your anti-virus software during the installation.

Q: My HUD is white/ blank.

A: 1. Toggle the pause button in the top right of the Second Life viewer screen next to the volume icon, if this doesn’t help log out and back in.

2. This is due to an unstable connection. Best is to use the computers on the 2nd & 3rd floor of the Dirac Library, the computers there (except from the older PCs) have the Second Life viewer installed. If you can’t go to campus please try to restart your modem and if possible connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable.

Q: My HUD says "Frame load interrupted by policy change" / The media isn’t working.

A: Please install Flash player. Here are the links to the Flash player software:

After installing please log out and back in.

Q: My HUD froze/ is not responding.

A: 1. Toggle the pause button in the top right of the Second Life viewer screen next to the volume icon

2. Right click the HUD and select detach. Wait for a new HUD to appear.

Q: My HUD went back to the welcome screen in the middle of the lab.

A: This is due to an unstable connection. Best is to use the computers on the 2nd & 3rd floor of the Dirac Library, the computers there (except from the older PCs) have the Second Life viewer installed. If you can’t go to campus please try to restart your modem and if possible connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable.

Q: My HUD says host campus.cndg not found.

A: Please log out, wait for 10 minutes and log back in.

Q: My HUD says blocked by Bitdefender (or another antivirus program)

A: Log out turn off your antivirus program and log back in or make sure to allow (white list) the Second Life viewer, cndg.info and campus.cndg.info in your antivirus program and log out and back in.

Q: My Pre- or Post- lab froze. I can’t continue.

A: 1. Click the ‘home’ button in the top right corner of your HUD and restart the pre- / post-lab, it will continue where you left off.

2. If it still doesn’t work please contact a TA or CNDG Support.

Q: The sound of the Pre- or Post- lab media isn’t working.

A: 1. Click the volume icon in the top right corner of your screen twice.

2. Hover your mouse over the volume icon and make sure the ‘Media slider’ is all the way to the right.

3. Check your computer volume, if it is set correctly try logging out and back in.

Q: My HUD says "Frame load interrupted by policy change" / The media isn’t working.

A: 1. Click on the text box before the one that isn’t responding and hit the ‘Tab’ key.

Q: I tried to start my lab and got this message: Error: could not find destination, please contact CNDG support.

A: Right click your HUD and select detach and wait for a new HUD to appear. Once you have your HUD just go to the lab again and click activity.

Q: Parts of the experiment are not appearing.

A: 1. Right click on the parts that have appeared and hit Esc.

2. Stand up and sit down again and restart the experiment.
