UCD CENTRE FOR STUDY ABROAD

The UCD Centre for Study Abroad provides a resource to all non-EU students studying at UCD promoting intellectual challenge, cultural immersion and individual growth. The Centre’s team comprises of coordinators from UCD Colleges & Schools, each providing a structured and responsive service to students studying within their discipline. The core ideals of the Study Abroad Programmes at UCD are founded on the key objectives of academic excellence and cultural integration.

UCD CENTRE FOR STUDY ABROAD

Academic ProgrammeTypically, Study Abroad students take six modules during a semester. Modules are chosen from an extensive range available from UCD’s undergraduate degree programmes. Study Abroad Students attend regular classes alongside Irish and other international students. Project and study groups are designed to ensure that students are fully integrated into the UCD learning environment. Classes are typically 3 hours per week per module. Grading is a based on continuous assessment and final examination.

Off-campus housingOff-campus housing is available in private rented houses and apartments in Dublin. The Centre for Study Abroad facilitates students in suggesting suitable accommmodation. Houses are furnished and within walking distance of Dublin city centre and on a bus route to UCD.

Cultural/Social ProgramOne of the essential elements of the study abroad experience at UCD is for international students to fully understand and appreciate the richness of Irish society and culture.

Our cultural/social programme offers Study Abroad students the opportunity to learn about Irish culture through a series of excursions and field trips in Dublin and across the island of Ireland. The country’s rich and complex history has left a remarkably artistic legacy and modern Ireland continues to be a global centre of artistic and cultural excellence.

Student Health and WelfareThe UCD Student Health Centre provides a free and confidential service to all registered students at the university. Male and female doctors are available by appointment and a nurse is available throughout the day. While at UCD, study abroad students may also avail of the support services of counsellors, advisers and chaplains.

LibraryThe UCD James Joyce Library has a stock of 1 million volumes, including some 30,000 early printed books, and important collections of Irish manuscripts. It offers a special range of reference books, course-books, academic periodicals and background reading in all subjects. SportsThe sports facilities at UCD are among the finest in the country and reflect the popularity and significance of sport at the university. All levels of proficiency are catered for in the fifty six official sports clubs. UCD has facilities for soccer, rugby, Gaelic games and hockey, in addition to an athletics track and tennis courts. There is also a large indoor sports centre with squash courts, sports halls and a state of the art fitness suite.

At the end of your semester, UCD will send your official transcript to your home institution. Your home institution decides on credits to be awarded for modules pursued at UCD. We will be pleased to provide full information on our modules to enable your institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits.

FACILITIES

The Agriculture and Food Science Centre provides excellent learning support facilities for our visiting students, including a purpose-built Food Science building with dedicated food laboratories and a sensory evaluation suite. Students have access to UCD’s 250 hectare research farm, Lyon’s Estate, which is located at Newcastle, Co. Dublin and to glasshouse and field research facilities on the Belfield campus.

The Clinton Institute for American Studies was established at University College Dublin in 2003 with the support of the Irish government, in recognition of the contributions made by President Clinton and his administration to the Peace Process. The Institute promotes teaching and research on US history, culture and politics and on transatlantic relations.

UCD Clinton Institute Semester AbroadThe Clinton Institute Ireland, Semester Abroad is a Spring semester programme of modules tailored for US-based students who wish to gain an international perspective on their own country. The programme consists of several modules which examine America’s global role and it provides students with an opportunity to closely study the perceptions and impacts of the US in another country.

ProgrammeStudents on the programme will take 30 ECT credits, made up of six modules taught at the Institute:

The programme will include a number of social events during the course of the semester. All Clinton Institute Semester Abroad students are encouraged to participate in the events programme of the Institute, which includes research seminars, symposia and conferences - all of which can enrich the learning experience.

AssessmentCSI students undertake the same examinations as domestic students in accordance with University regulations.Increasingly, essay and class-based work forms a substantial component of the assessment process.

Credit TransferAt the end of the semester, UCD provides a transcript of modules attended to assist with credit transfer to the student’s home university.

EligibilityThe minimum GPA requirement is 3.00. In admitting students, preference may be given to those whose courses in their home universities prepare them for the subjects which they intend to study at UCD.

Study Abroad ARTS & HUMAN SCIENCES


The Study Abroad Programme in the UCD Colleges of Arts and Human Sciences was established in 1986. Study Abroad students attend the same modules and sit the same examinations as Irish students to ensure full cultural integration and maximum educational benefit for all students. Admission is typically for the full academic year, however students are also accepted for one semester.

Arts Subject ChoicesStudents must take a minimum of 30 ECTS credits per semester, based on two subjects selected from the following:

Students also have the option of incorporating one elective module into their 30-credit semestrial load. This may be chosen from any of the subjects above or from one of the following: Canadian Studies, Film Studies, Irish Folklore, Irish Studies, Psychology.

SCIENCE Study Abroad ProgrammeThe UCD Architecture Study Abroad Programme offers visiting students the opportunity to be part of the longest running Architecture programme in Ireland; which is also the only one accredited by the professional institutes of both Ireland and Britain (RIAI and RIBA respectively). UCD’s Architecture modules offer excellent opportunities to enhance your knowledge in all fields of Architecture from technical (Architectural Technologies, Structures, Environmental Science) to cultural (Architectural History & Theory, Ecology, Conservation) and managerial (Professional Studies).

UCD ARCHITECTURE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMME

FacilitiesArchitecture at UCD is at the forefront of the architectural and urban design debate in Ireland. The UCD School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering provides a unique forum for interaction between research, teaching and the practice of Architecture. The School is located at the Richview section of the campus and boasts its own building laboratory, computer laboratories, library and café. Most of the lectures, tutorials, seminars and other module activities happen in these premises.

Module SelectionArchitecture Study Abroad students have the opportunity to choose from all lecture-based Architecture modules provided they satisfy any prior learning requirements and there are no timetable conflicts. Registration for design studio modules is restricted but may be possible with the approval of the Dean of Architecture. You may also have the opportunity to take part in Architecture field trips to European cities.

Students attending UCD for the full academic session may take up to 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits: typically 8 x 5-credit architecture lecture-based modules and 4 x 5-credit elective modules from other subject areas offered in UCD.

Students attending for a single semester only may take up to 30 ECTS credits: typically 4 x 5-credit architecture lecture-based modules and 2 x 5-credit elective modules from other subject areas offered in UCD.

FacilitiesThe UCD Engineering and Materials Science Centre houses the UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering and the UCD School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. The UCD Newstead Building is the location of the UCD School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering. Engineering Study Abroad students will attend lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals and other module activities in these buildings, but lectures also take place throughout the UCD Belfield campus, so students experience a variety of locations, lecture theatres, seminar rooms and laboratories.

FACILITIES

Our programmes are delivered in a state-of-the art learning environment. The Health Sciences Centre consists of top-of-the range lecture facilities, a purpose built clinical skills centre with interactive video equipment, library, information and computing resources and student resource rooms.

Students undertake clinical practice at national centres of excellence and our partner hospitals include: St. Vincent’s University Hospital, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, St. John of God Hospital, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, the National Maternity Hospital and Our Lady’s Hospice.

ASSESSMENTFormal examinations are set at the end of each semester in December and May. International students are expected to undertake examinations in accordance with University regulations. Increasingly, project and class-based work forms a component of the assessment process.

CREDIT TRANSFERThe home institution decides on credits to be awarded for modules pursued at UCD. We will be pleased to provide full information on our modules to enable institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits.

ELIGIBILITYTHE MINIMUM GPA REQUIREMENT IS 3.00. In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a transcript of academic record to date and letter of recommendation from an academic referee should be sent to the Science Programme Office before the application deadline.
