DN520 BA Arts [Two Subject]:

Year-abroad study is optional. Students can apply for a year abroad in a partner university. They extend their degree from three to four years and are awarded a BA (International) degree.

DN530 BA Humanities:

Students may apply for a semester abroad in one of our partner universities during the third year of their degree programme. Students taking English, European and World Literature have a built-in year-long programme abroad

DN541 BA Modern Languages:

All students take year 3 abroad.

Students enrolled on the BA Humanities four-year degree may apply for a one-semester internship in the third year of their programme. UCD College of Arts and Humanities will offer internships across a wide spectrum of industries, including government, NGOs; media, creative industry and cultural institutions.

These internships will be supported by a pre-placement work-preparation module and will allow students to gain invaluable work experience in an environment relevant to their degree subjects.

As well as giving students workplace experience, the internships will help students establish a network of relationships, enhance their core skills, deepen their understanding of the wider world and inform future career choices.

This programme is taught by our world-class academics and allows you to specialise in your chosen subjects so that you can embark on a wide range of future careers, postgraduate opportunities and professional work.

Please note that in a Joint Major degree (for example, History and English), students take an equal number of modules in both subjects. Irish Leaving Certificate Applicant Admission to UCD Arts and Humanities programmes is based on the points system for students who take the Leaving Certificate examinations. In order to be eligible to compete for any course, you must obtain a minimum of Grade H5 in two subjects and a minimum of Grade O6/H7 in the remaining four subjects. Irish, English and a third language are required subjects. Application is through the CAO process.

Mature Applicants A mature applicant is anyone who is at least 23 years of age on 1 January of the proposed year of entry. For admission in September 2018, your date of birth must be on or before 1 January 1995. Application is through the CAO and all students must sit an MSAP test.

University Access Courses Access courses designed to help adult learners prepare for university are available in Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Science, Engineering and Agricultural Sciences. The UCD access courses guarantee entry to the BA degree programme, once course assessment criteria are met.

HEAR School leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are under the age of 23 as of 1 January 2018 and resident in the Republic of Ireland, may apply to Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) scheme.


DARE DARE is for school leavers (under 23 years old as at 1 January 2018) who have the ability to benefit from and succeed in higher education, but who may not meet the points for their preferred course due to the impact of a disability.


How to Apply to UCD Arts and Humanities

Application to UCD is via the CAO and there are a number of routes into Arts and Humanities.

ENTRY With QQI-FET Qualification All Arts and Humanities programmes have reserved places for applicants with appropriate QQI-FET (Level 5 or 6) qualifications and modules. Applicants must have a minimum of distinction in five modules and are admitted on a competitive basis.

A-Level Applicant Applicants must have six recognised subjects, according to course requirements. They must obtain Grade C, or better, in two subjects at A-level (A2) and Grade C, or better, in the remaining four subjects at GCSE. Applicants from Britain and Northern Ireland are generally exempt from the requirement of presenting Irish.

EU Applicant EU applicants must meet the same minimum entry requirements as Irish CAO school leavers.

Entrance Scholars UCD recognises the calibre of its incoming high-achieving students with the UCD Entrance Scholar award. Entrance Scholar awards are presented to first year students who achieve 560 points or more in their Leaving Certificate (or equivalent second level examination) in recognition of their academic accomplishment to date. No application is required and recipients are automatically informed.

Grants Ireland’s awarding authority for all national higher and further education grants is SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland).
