ANSWERS: Pesticide Label Activity Sheet

Table 1

Would these products be considered broad-spectrum or selective pesticides? Where on the label did you find information to determine this?

The products are all broad-spectrum pesticides. Some labels will say things like Kills 100 listed insects on the front with photos, but most of the information is in the booklet, which is part of the label. If numerous or a wide range of pests are killed by the pesticide, it is most likely broad-spectrum.

What do these bottles active ingredients have in common?

The active ingredients are all either 25b (food grade oils) or low-toxicity pesticides.

Table 3

According to the Directions for Use or Application Instructions on the labels, describe briefly what will enable to products to effectively control the pests listed.

The products must be applied to leaves or plant surfaces thoroughly so that complete coverage is assured. Other acceptable answer is Contact.

What do these bottles active ingredients have in common?

[Facilitator note: Not all of the products will be insecticides. Stress the term active ingredients to participants.]

The products are all microbial pesticides derived from biological organisms.

What do these product labels say about personal protective equipment? Do they all say the same thing?

[Facilitator note: this question is not referring to label directions saying wash hands/clothes after handling. You may need to stress this to participants so they know what they are looking for on the label.]

Some labels list PPE (personal protective equipment) while others do not. There isnt consistency in labeling.
