WebcastsCustom webcasts provide companies with a focused way to connect with their target audi-ence via a web-based presentation organized by Underground Construction. Live web-casts are usually 1 hour, and all webcasts are archived for on-demand access, via UConOn-line.com, for 12 months. For companies, there are two webcast strategies to consider:

Strategy 1: Sponsor specifi c webcasts managed by Underground Construction (2018 topics to be confi rmed).

Strategy 2: Be the content provider for an exclusive webcast.

One of the benefi ts to exclusively sponsoring or hosting an Underground Construction web-cast is the ability to control the content and invite the speaker(s). Underground Construc-tion’s marketing team creates a customized plan for each webcast to increase awareness and registrants. That plan may include: promo-tion on the homepage of UConOnline.com; e-Newsletter advertising; targeted e-blasts; and a ½-page ad promoting the webcast in the magazine.

White PapersWhite Papers enable companies by helping them establish or enhance their thought-lead-ership position in the market. These highly credible marketing tools help you present your company’s best technical information and showcase it to Underground Construction’s audience, while generating high-quality leads for your company.

Sponsored Content Underground Construction’s native advertising platform allows companies to connect directly with underground construction and rehabili-tation professionals. Underground Construc-tion’s native advertising opportunities stretch across the brand, with options available in the magazine, on UConOnline.com, by email and by social media.

Underground Construction October 2015

Some of the best new product ideas come from customer conversa-

tions. Equipment manufacturers often talk with underground con-

struction contractors about their ever-changing equipment needs on

horizontal directional drilling (HDD) job sites. When utility contractors

talk about their biggest HDD pain points, disposing of drill mud usu-

ally tops the list. Drilling mud is, well, messy busi-ness. Mud can’t be simply left piled

on a public easement or private property once underground utilities

have been installed. Cleaning up the drilling mud and hauling it away

for proper disposal is the responsi-bility of the utility contractor.“At the Ditch Witch organization,

we listen to customer feedback and engineer equipment to meet spe-

cifi c job-site challenges,” said Seth Matthesen, product manager for

HDD at the Ditch Witch organiza-tion. “We’re in this together. That’s

why we designed the MR90 micro mud-recycling system, to fi ll a void

in HDD support equipment and meet the mud disposal challenges

that face our utility contractors on their jobs.”

The MR90 is designed specifi -cally for drill units with pullback rat-

ings ranging from 20,000 to 60,000 lbs (9,072 to 27,216 kg) – the most

widely used drill rigs in service today. In the past, most mud-re-

cycling systems were designed to support large drill rigs. Depending

on the capacity of the equipment,

operators would have to haul mul-tiple loads to a landfi ll or disposal

site, which is time consuming and costly. The MR90 is a compact,

self-contained unit that can mix and recycle mud, handle spoils and is

the only unit in its class that can be transported full of fl uid. Further, it

uses a fraction of the water and ad-ditives, saving contractors operat-

ing costs.“Many mud recyclers on the mar-

ket rely on supplementary equip-ment to operate, which can quickly

add costs. Until recently, some con-tractors on midsized underground

projects would forego recycling drilling mud, as they believed dis-

posal costs to be lower than having a recycler on-site,” said Matthesen.

“For these contractors, the MR90 is quickly becoming the break-

through, as many are reporting signifi cant cost savings and faster

completion of HDD projects.”Recycling creates savings – for example, an HDD rig with 30,000

lbs of pullback can pump 20,000 gal of fl uid during the course of a

project. With the MR90, that same volume could be pumped using

only 1,500 gal of drilling mud, sav-ing 18,500 gal of water and as much

as $1,500 of additives. The reduction of water volume also removes the need for multiple

trucks used to haul and process water for the job site. These trucks

get about 10 mpg when loaded and 15 mpg when empty – providing

signifi cant fuel cost savings.

“In addition to cost savings, con-tractors using the Ditch Witch MR90

receive other benefi ts on the job,” said Matthesen. “HDD contractors

also see improvement in their rig’s uptime by removing the need to

mix drilling mud, during which time the rig remains inactive.” More than supporting profi tabil-

ity goals, the MR90 also benefi ts the environment. The most obvi-

ous environmental impact is a re-duced carbon footprint. With fewer

machines on the job site and less fl uid to clean up, overall emissions

released into the atmosphere de-crease. The addition of a MR90 pro-

vides an environmentally friendly approach to remove drill fl uids from

HDD job sites.

At a time when profit margins are shrinking, it is important for con-tractors to complete utility instal-lations quickly and safely, without damaging existing utilities. Contrac-tors need to expose existing utilities before they start digging, and that can be time-consuming. One Call paint marks have an area of toler-ance, and that range varies by state. Some states may allow up to 36 inches on either side of the mark — which is a large window to find a small cable or pipe — and that hurts production time.

“I was on a jobsite a few weeks ago and the contractor spent six hours looking for an electric line,” explained Matt Manning, product manager – electronics, at McLaugh-lin. “The crew dug 4 feet down on the mark. They didn’t see the utility line, so they started searching to the left and the right of the locate mark. By the end of the day, they had created a small trench that had to be filled before they left for the evening. When I arrived the next morning, we spent 30 minutes con-firming the utility location with a locator. The electric line was 5 feet deep and the paint mark was 1 foot off, which was within the tolerance range. The contractor lost six hours of production on that job.”

McLaughlin Utility Locators McLaughlin carries a full line of multiple frequency locators, which give visual, audible, depth and cur-rent measurement index data to confirm a utility’s location.

The McLauglin G2 provides depth information and current measurement index between actual utilities and the bleed over, the unwanted signal on other utilities. It has good induction capabilities and can confirm a majority of the painted utilities inductively, which is a quick way to verify the locate mark and get a depth estimate. The G2 can also passively locate, direct-connect or clamp onto other utili-ties to confirm their locations.

The McLaughlin GX is designed for excavation and utility contrac-

tors who must locate existing lines on their own. The GX offers more frequencies and a more powerful transmitter than the G2 for applica-tions requiring extra wattage; for example, when utilities are deeper than normal or the GX is required to push the signal a greater distance.

The GX is ideal for operators locating on a daily basis, like those for cable, electric, gas and water companies. A sub-surface utility engineering company, which is hired to map the facilities in advance so the owner knows what needs to be changed or moved, can also benefit from the GX.

The G2 and GX locators both have GPS mapping capabilities. This allows contractors to document the location, type and depth of the util-ity, which can easily be referenced for future projects.

The McLaughlin Vision FLX has advanced capabilities to find the point of damage in underground utilities. The FLX is designed for power, telephone and cable com-panies, and subcontractors who are frequently called to repair dis-ruptions in customer service. The FLX can quickly pinpoint the issue so the line can be excavated and repaired.

The antennas on McLaughlin locators are mounted in rubber iso-lators for added durability. Because the antennas cannot move around, they provide more left to right lo-cating accuracy and do not need to be recalibrated.

Given the locator technologies available today, it’s surprising that some contractors still rely solely on One Call marks for utility locates.

“There’s a misunderstanding in the market that if a contrac-tor owns a utility locator, they are taking on additional liability,” said Manning. “But that’s incorrect. As long as the contractor follows the state’s One Call laws, having a utility locator does not add any liability. The locator will only help increase production and reduce the risk of damages.”

NNational Trench Safety introduced the Lite GuardTM Aluminum Shield last spring and has begun the process of manufacturing and deploying the shield to NTS branch locations. The Lite Guard, composed of a proprietary aluminum extruded panel, provides depth ratings comparable to that of a steel trench shield at about a third the weight (see exhibit 1 for representative depth ratings).

A recent project in Northern Virginia provided a shining example of the benefi t the shield can have over alternatives. A contractor was installing a new water line that will feed new development in the city including a business park and apartments.

As with many projects, the type of equipment on a job can impact the type of shoring system selected. Contractors installing long joints of pipe have historically used steel trench shields due to the inherent productivity benefi ts of having a box long enough to install the joints while also being able to drag that box. The traditional marketplace for aluminum shielding has not been able to provide the necessary span to replace a steel trench shield, while also meeting depth rating requirements. On this project, the contractor was able to use an 8’ x 24’ Lite Guard aluminum shield to perform the work. The Lite Guard also features a unique hardened aluminum knife

edge that allows the box to be much more resilient than typical aluminum trench shields which can be severely damaged when exposed to dragging.

The contractor was very impressed with the strength and versatility of the Lite Guard aluminum shield and its potential to reduce the requirement for heavier machinery solely as a means to lift heavier steel trench shields.
