2 Introduction This document describes how to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64-bit), VBoxGuestAdditions 4.3.20 and setup file sharing between Ubuntu Guest and Windows 7 Professional Service pack 1 (64-bit) Host.

3 Download Ubuntu Download Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS (64-bit) from Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
Click on the “Download” button select “Not now, take me to the download” and save “ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso” to “I:\syfer\Downloads”

4 Open VirtualBox “Start -> All Programs -> Oracle VM VirtualBox -> Oracle VM VirtualBox”

5 Create a New Virtual Machine “Machine -> New”. Type “Name: -> Ubuntu”. Select “Type: -> Linux”. Select “Version: -> Ubuntu (64 bit)” Note: “Ubuntu” will be the VM Name. Click on the “Next” button.

Move slider to “4096MB”. Click on the “Next” button.

Click on the “Create a virtual hard drive now” radio button. Click on the “Create” button.

Click on the “VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)” radio button. Click on the “Next” button.

Click on the “Dynamically allocated” radio button. Click on the “Next” button.

6 Install Ubuntu “Machine -> Start”. Click on the “Choose a virtual optical disk drive” folder button.

Select “I:\Syfer\Downloads\ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso”. Click on the “Open” button.

Click on the “Start” button.

Click on “English”. Click on the “Install Ubuntu” button.

Ensure that hard drive and internet requirements are met.
Click on the “Continue” button.

Click on the “Erase disk and install Ubuntu” radio button to select. Click on the “Install Now” button.

Check location and adjust if necessary by clicking on the world map. Click on the “Continue” button.

Click on “Choose your keyboard layout: -> English (US)”. Click on the “Continue” button.

Type “Your name: -> syfer”. Type “Pick a username: -> syfer”. Type “Choose a password: -> xxxx”. Type “Confirm you password: -> xxxx”. Click on the “Continue” button.

Installation time will depend on computer and network speed.

Wait for installation to complete.
Click on the “Restart Now” button.

7 Install VBoxGuestAdditions VBoxGuestAdditions enable full screen resolution, shares etc
Open terminal “ctrl + alt + t”.
$ wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.20/VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.20.iso

$ sudo apt-get install dkms gcc When prompted “Do you want to continue? [Y/n]” type “y” and press the “Enter” key.

$ sudo adduser syfer vboxsf
Note 1: This command adds syfer to the vboxsf group. Type “groups” in a command tool to see available groups.
Note 2: “sudo adduser syfer vboxsf” is required for shared folders.

8 Setup Shared Folder 8.1 Window 7 Create a folder called “Vbox” in the directory “I:\Syfer”. Ensure that “I:\Syfer\Vbox” was created.
8.2 Oracle VirtualBox Manager Select “Ubuntu” Virtual Machine in Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager.
Select “Machine -> Settings”. Select “Shared Folders”.

Select “Folder Path: -> I:\Syfer\Vbox”. Click on the “Auto-mount” check box to select. Click on the “OK” button.

Note: “Vbox” is the Share name. Click on the “OK” button.

8.3 Windows CMD tool Important 1: Ensure that the “Ubuntu VM and VirtualBox” are both closed. Important 2: Ensure that the share directory and VM name are entered with correct case.
The example below has VM Name equal to “Ubuntu” and Share name equal to “Vbox”
cd “Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"

9 VirtualBox VirtualBox must be run as administrator for symbolic links to work correctly.
Right click “Oracle VM VirtualBox” and select “Run as administrator”.

9.1 Start Virtual Machine “Machine -> Start”
9.2 Guest Access file from Host The Ubuntu guest can copy and open files located in host share “I:\Syfer\Vbox”. Note: There are limitation and files should not be modified by the guest and saved. Modifying the text file results in “Unexpected error: Error renaming temporary file: Text file busy”.
In the following example the Ubuntu guest opens the “hello.txt” file located in host share “I:\Syfer\Vbox”.
Note: If changed are made to the share from the Host then the Guest will need to refresh the directory to view the changes.
Click on file manager “nautilus”. Click on “Computer”. Double click on “media” to open. Double click on “sf_Vbox” to open. Double click on “hello.txt” to open.

9.3 Guest Place file on Host The Ubuntu guest can copy files to the host “Windows 7” share “I:\Syfer\Vbox”.
In the following example the Ubuntu guest copies a modified version of “hello_changed.txt” to the share “I:\Syfer\Vbox”.
Click on file manager “nautilus”. Click on “Computer”. Double click on “media” to open. Double click on “sf_Vbox” to open. Copy “hello_changed.txt” from the desktop to “/media/sf_Vbox” Double click on “hello_changed.txt” to open.
