Te eight research projects that Patra and students are currently involved in include:
The study o nanotechnology and nanomaterials to develop an artifcial connective tissue network
known as Carbon NanoTube PolyDiMethylSiloxane (CNT/PDMS). This research is being conducted
with colleagues at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Rice University, and other institutions. This
specifc study is part o a larger research interest to investigate the orientation and alignment o
nanofbers in order to design structurally tunable scaolds or tissue engineered materials that can
lead to advanced materials such as artifcial skin, wound healing bandages and flters, to name a ew.
An investigation o the unique biological dispersion o graphene, a two-dimensional, anatomically
thin, honeycomb-shaped carbon crystal structure and its binding eectiveness with proteins identifed
in Alzheimers. This collaborative research involves aculty and student researchers at Wesleyan
University.
The development o an invisible ink-based diagnostic tool or the rapid
screening o tuberculosis, with an eye on being cost-eective and requiringno special storage or laboratory acilities in order to be available to
developing nations.
A pilot study to establish precise graphene signatures o Graphene
Nanoribbons (GNR) by manipulating the conductivity o the GNR surace
in order to explore its use in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). This study has the potential to
develop a new biological contrast agent or MRI use. Yale Universitys Core Center or Quantitative
Neuroscience with Magnetic Resonance awarded a P30 grant to Patra or this work. The grant
provides the use o a vertical bore 11.7T system, along with NMR scans, the reagents used or
sample preparation, and the technical support o the Centers scientists, technicians, and engineers.
A study o graphene nanoribbon-DNA sel assembly, conducted at Brookhaven National
Laboratory.
Research in collaboration with a colleague at the University o Texas at Dallas to develop a
microelectrode-based point o care diagnostic tool or hs-CRP biomarker detection.
The study o nanofber orientation and alignment through the electrostatic jetting o polymer
nanofbers and the inkjet deposition o conductive ormulations to be used in tissue engineering. Patra
and students are working with researchers at the Cleveland Clinic to research a specifc application to
