Be  able  to  analyse  and  research  a  time-‐based  problem  in  art  and  design.  2. Be  able  to  use  an  integrated  approach  to  time-‐based  problem  solving  in  art  and  design.  3. Be  able  to  use  evaluation  to  support  solutions  to  time-‐based  problems  in  art  and  design.    THE  BRIEF    In  September  2017  Three  Ply  are  curating  Liverpool’s  first  digital  arts  festival  in  venues  across  the  city.  The  theme  of  this  festival  is  Hidden  Worlds  and  it  aims  to  showcase  cutting  edge  and  experimental  work  from  digital  artists  and  design  studios  across  the  world.

About  the  organisation  Three  ply  is  a  Liverpool  based  organisation  that  aims  to  be  a  creative  hub  for  digital  artists,  designers,  animators  and  film-‐makers  in  the  North  West.  The  organisation  works  on  commercial,  educational  and  arts-‐based  projects,  bringing  together  digital  creatives  from  different  disciplines  to  explore  new  ways  of  solving  problems,  expressing  ideas  and  telling  stories  using  technology.

About  the  festival  The  festival  will  be  taking  place  in  existing  arts  venues  (e.g.  FACT,  Walker,  Bluecoat,  Tate)  and  disused  spaces  across  the  city  between  04.09.17  –  25.09.17  and  aims  to  attract  not  only  local  people  but  also  creatives  worldwide.  Through  this  festival  we  hope  not  only  to  showcase  the  best  in  digital  arts  to  the  people  of  the  North  West,  raising  awareness,  understanding  and  interest  in  the  area,  but  also  put  Liverpool  on  the  map  as  a  modern,  forward  thinking  city  that  is  a  hub  for  innovation,  creativity  and  emerging  arts.  As  well  as  showing  work  there  will  be  a  programme  of  talks  by  artists  and  companies  in  which  they  discuss  the  creative  and  technical  approaches  employed  in  developing  their  work.    Due  to  the  wide  spectrum  of  work  within  this  field,  the  festival  exhibitions  will  be  categorised  into  the  three  distinct  sections  listed  below:

1. Cutting  edge,  experimental  motion  graphics,  animation,  motion  typography  and  short  digital  pieces.  2. Narrative  based  short  films,  animations  and  work  that  uses  digital  media  to  explore  new  methods  of

storytelling.  3. Work  that  uses  programming  to  create  interactive  or  generative  animation,  images  and  experiences.

UAL  LEVEL  3  DIPLOMA  AND  EXTENDED  DIPLOMA  IN  DIGITAL  GRAPHIC  DESIGN

The  City  of  Liverpool  College  20016-‐17

About  the  theme    Hidden  worlds  is  concerned  with  the  invisible  that  surrounds  us  in  our  everyday  lives;  From  wireless  networks  and  the  one’s  and  zero’s  that  make  up  digital  images  to  rubbish-‐filled  alleyways  and  plants  clinging  to  the  cracks  in  a  wall.    We  want  to  take  a  closer  look  at  those  things  we  routinely  ignore,  exposing  the  ‘Hidden  Worlds’  that  we  co-‐exist  with  every  day.

What  we  are  looking  for  We  want  festival  bumpers  that  display  individual  artists  names  and  can  be  played  between  talks  and  at  exhibitions.  You  should  create  an  aesthetic  approach  for  these  bumpers  that  have  a  common  graphical/animation  style  and  act  as  a  metaphor  for  the  theme  outlined  above.  The  bumpers  can  contain  any  combination  of  motion  graphics,  video,  illustration  and  imagery  and  should  conform  to  the  following  specifications:

• Minimum  of  2  sample  bumpers  • Between  10  seconds  and  20  seconds  in  length  • Contain  names  of  people/companies  exhibiting  work    • 1080p  resolution  (1920  x  1080)  • 25fps

Deadlines  and  Submission  details  Final  bumpers  should  be  completed  and  uploaded  to  Vimeo  on  31st  March.  Your  evaluation,  project  planning,  research,  production  and  development  work  should  be  made  available  via  your  personal  blog  by  the  7th  April.  You  final  video  should  be  uploaded  to  Vimeo  and  embedded  within  your  personal  blog.  The  compression  settings  for  your  uploaded  video  should  be  as  follows:

• Video  file  Format  Quicktime  • Video  Codec  –  H264  • Audio  codec  –  AAC  Stereo,  16-‐bit,  48  khz  • Data  Rate  -‐  20  000kbps

UAL  LEVEL  3  DIPLOMA  AND  EXTENDED  DIPLOMA  IN  DIGITAL  GRAPHIC  DESIGN

Motion  Graphics  Workflow  and  Documentation  There  are  a  number  of  stages  you  need  to  complete  in  the  creation  of  motion  graphics  sequences.  They  fall  into  the  three  broad  categories  of  Pre-‐Production,  Production  and  Post  Production.    Due  to  the  various  approaches  that  can  be  adopted  to  producing  motion  graphics  work,  depending  on  your  approach  to  the  project,  some  of  them  may  not  be  relevant  to  your  project.  I  have  included  them  here  so  that  you  can  use  them  as  a  reference  for  your  project  development.    I  would  suggest  when  documenting  the  work  completed  on  your  blog  you  create  individual  posts  which  detail  the  work  you  have  completed  in  relation  to  each  of  these  tasks.    Task  01:  Pre-‐Production  All  work  completed  in  the  planning  of  your  project  along  with  the  research  and  idea  generation  processes  completed  in  preparation  for  creating  your  bumpers.

• Analysis  of  brief  • Project  Planning  • Initial  research  (this  may  consist  of  a  number  of  posts)  • Moodboard  /  visual  reference  /  conceptual  reference  • Idea  generation  +  rough  sketches  • Styleframes

Task  02:  Production/Post  Production  Evidence  of  the  development  of  your  idea  through  the  production  and  post-‐production  process  to  finished  piece.

• Graphics  production  • Creation/gathering  of  other  assets  (e.g.  audio,  photography  etc)  • Video  Editing  +  Audio  Sequencing  • Animation  +  Compositing  • Colour  Correction  • Export  and  compression

Task  03:  Evaluation  A  written  evaluation  of  no  less  than  300  words  should  aim  to  evaluate  the  effectiveness  of  your  final  design  solution/s.  Using  the  feedback  received  from  your  peers  and  tutor  alongside  your  own  critical  assessment  you  should  outline  what  you  were  aiming  to  achieve  with  your  work  and  how  you  developed  this  solution.  Importantly  you  should  then  reflect  upon  how  effectively  your  approach  worked  on  a  conceptual,  aesthetic  and  technical  level.
