    BOARD CUTTING

Suitable cutting m ethods includ e the use of:

    (a)Score and Snapknife (b) H and guillotine (c) H andsaw

(a)Score and Snap knife*Score and snapcutting is a fast and efficient m ethod,

using a tungsten-tipped score and snapknife.

    Steps:

Preferably score from the face side of the board.Score against straight ed ge & repeat action to obtain

sufficient dep th for clean b reak (norm ally 1/3 of board

    thickness).

S nap upw ards to achieve break.

C lean edges w ith a rasp if necessary.

    b) Hand G uillotine*B oard can be cut w ith a hand

    guillotine to produce clean

    straight edges.

    Steps:

    M ark line for cutting.

Align the guillotine blade along the cut-off side of the line

to allow for the thickness of the b lad e

    b ) Ha n ds a w

A hand saw can also be used for

    general cutting operations such

as for sm all cuts and notching.

For notching, use a handsaw first and then score along

back w ith a score and snapknife (as illustrated ) and snap

upw ards. C lean rough edges w ith a rasp.

    HOLE-FORMING

    (a) For sma ll rect ang ula r and circular holes

    Steps:

D rill a series of holes around the p erim eter of the hole

    opening required.

Then tap out the w aste piece from the board face.

Tap gently to avoid dam age to board.Ensure that board edges are prop erly and evenly

    supported.

(b)Fo r large recta ngular openings for wa ll ventila tors.

    Steps:

Start w ith scoring around the perim eter of the opening to

sufficient depth w ith score and snapknife.

Form a large round hole at the centre of the perim eter by

    drilling as show n above.

Then saw -cut from the centre tow ards the corners of the

    rectangular opening.

Tap gently to rem ove w aste p ieces from face side.

C lean rough edges and radius corners w ith a suitable

    rasp.

    WORKING WITH POWER TOOLS

U AC Fibre C em ent boards can be readily cut on site w ith pow er tools. For board cutting, pow er circular saw w ith diam ond tipped

blad e can be used. For hole-form ing, pow er drill fitted w ith hole-cutter or jig saw w ith tungsten blade is suitab le. All pow er cutting

operations should be carried out in a w ell ventilated environm ent and w ith good w ork safety practices. O ther preferred board cutting

    BOARD LAYOUT

B oard can be laid vertically or horizontally as show n in figures 1 & 2 respectively.

    Figure 1: Board Layout Vertical

Figure 2: Board Layou t Hor izontal

    Note:

Whilst framing and fixing details are illustrated mainly using steel studs, the

same details, fasteners spacing etc, apply to timber studs. How ever kiln-dry

timber is recomm ended to minimise timber shrinkage.

    FRAMING

For both vertical and horizontal layout:

Tim ber or steel fram ing can be used.

S tuds m ust be firm ly secured to top

and bottom runners and fram es m ust

not reply on the sheeting for stability.

E nd joints of boards should not

coincide w ith corners of openings

such as doors or w indow s to reduce

joint cracks due to fram e m ovem ent

    ( figures 1 & 2 ).

W here end joints occur, they should

coincide w ith the centre line of a stud

    ( figure 3 ).

For vertical layout, nogging can be in

    line or staggered.

For horizontal layout, nogging m ust be

in line and boards can be laid in a

    brick likepattern.

    BOARD LAYOUT

B oards should be laid w ith their long sides at right angles to

the fram ing structures as show n in figure 20.

    Figure 20: Board Layout

Ensure that the end joints do not coincide w ith corners of

openings (e.g. air conditioning outlets) as these joints m ay

crack due to fram e m ovem ent ( figure 21 ). W here end joints

occur, they should be located on the centre line of a fram ing

m em ber as show n in figure 22 .

Figure 21: Board Layout Around Op enings

Figure 22: Board End Jo int Detail

    FRAMING

    Framing Materials:

Tim ber or steel fram ing m ay be used.

Kiln-dried tim ber should be chosen to m inim ise shrinkage.

C old form ed light gauge steel section, preferably less than

    1.2m m thick is recom m ended.

Spe cial Framing Des ign C onsiderations:

Boards should not be fixed to the underside of m etal roof

purlins or steel trusses directly. Preferably a suspended grid

    fram e should b e used.

Boards should not be used as ceiling under a non-insulated

m etal roof. G enerally, the m inim um acceptable insulation

requirem ent should be 50m m of m ineral w ool blanket below

    a layer of reflective foil.

Boards should not be fixed directly to the und erside of

tim ber roof trusses or rafters. Preferably a tim ber batten

    fram e should b e used.

    Framing Requirements and Recommendations:

For large areas, ceiling should be d ivided into bays not

    exceeding 10m x 7.5m ( figure 23 ).

    Figure 23: Maximum Bay Size

Each bay should be able to m ove independent of adjacent

bays and the surrounding building structures.

To m ake allow ance for this m ovem ent, an expansion joint

should be form ed at the perim eter of each b ay.

Fram ing structures (to w hich boards are fixed) m ust not

    continue across this expansion joint.
