WESTERN KENTUCKY STATE COLLEGE Western Kentucky State College is located on a hill overlook­

ing the city of Bowling Green, Kentucky (population 32,000). The central portion of the campus, known as College Heights, com­mands an impressive view of the Barren River valley and surround­ing hills. Embracing an area of 141 acres, the college campus has 31 beautiful buildings. A farm of 65 acres adjoining the campus provides instructional facilities in agriculture; another farm of 600 acres is maintained for production and research purposes.

Rich in local and state history, Bowling Green was an impor­tant center in the early settlement of the western part of the state. In the early days of the Civil War, General Albert Sidney Johnston established headquarters here for the Confederate Army of the West. A battle was fought in Bowling Green, and the city was for a short time the Confederate capital of Kentucky.

A fort, begun by General J ohnston in 1861, was later occupied and held by Union troops. Among their commanders was General Benjamin Harrison, afterwards President of the United States. The Fort, now preserved and incorporated into the carefully planned landscape of the campus, remains a highly valued and treasured memorial in the midst of the college grounds.

Originally created in 1906 for the sole purpose of teacher train­ing, Western now offers three undergraduate degrees and the master's degree with course offerings in twenty-four different de­partments. On June 1, 1961, the Graduate Division began offering graduate curricula leading to advanced certificates for teachers and school leaders based upon 24 hours beyond the Master's Degree. In addition, pre-professional work leading to entrance in professional and technical colleges for advanced study is also offered .

Now with an enrollment of more than 5,000 students, Western as a co-educational institution is in the midst of the greatest build­ing program in the h istory of the college. A six-story women's domi­tory, the tallest building in Bowling Green, is scheduled for oc­cupancy in September, 1962, and plans for an additional four-story women's dormitory and an ll-story "skyscraper" dormitory for men are well under way. Presently under construction is the $2.9 m illion dollar Academic-Athletic Building, which will house the E. A. Diddle Arena with a maximum seating capacity of 13,000, plus a smaller gymnasium, swimming pool, 30 master classrooms, and a portable stage. Scheduled for completion by September, 1963, the structure will be one of the largest buildings of its type in the United States.

The Western Stadium, located in a natural setting on the east side of the campus, has a capacity of 5,500. Crowned by a maj estic colennade at the top of the Stadium, the football arena is one of the most striking attractions on the Western campus.

In addition to football, a complete schedule of intercollegiate athletics is played in basketball , baseball, track, tennis, and golf at Western.

A Little All-America quarterback at Western Kentucky during the 1952 sea­son, Jim Feix was named to the post of quarterback coach of his former team in 1958. During the 1957 season while com­pleting requirements for the M. A. de­gree, Feix served as a student assistant. While a member of Hilltopper teams himself, Feix ranked among the top passers in the nation during both his JIM FE IX

junior and senior years. He gained national recognition for his quarterbacking of Western Kentucky's Refrigerator Bowl cham­pions in 1952.

Feix uses his own past quarterbacking . experiences to advan­tage in coaching the Hilltoppers. A friendly, engaging person, he is one of the most popular members of the Western coaching staff.

A native of Henderson, Feix served as a pilot in the U. S. Air Force from 1953 until 1957 when he returned to Western Kentucky to begin graduate work.

BILL MUMFORD-Senior-5-11-190-21 years old-Troy, Ohio. Bill has proved his worth in u t ility role for three years and the· coaching staff is banking heavily on him to replace the departed All Conference Jim Hughes.

LEE MURRAY -Senior- 6-0-180-21 years old-Russellville, Ala .. Lee, after a brilliant season last year, was voted the team's most: valuable man. He is, without doubt, one of the top ends in the coun­try for his size. He should see major service on both offense and! defense.

NEIL DeLORENZO- Junior-6-0-190-20 years old. Brooklyn, N.Y. Neil has potential ability and if he matches this with a de­termined spirit, he could prove the "surprise package" at the end position.

STAN NAPPER-Sophomore- 6-2-200-20 years old-Owensboro" Ky. Stan is an ou tstanding pass receiver, a fine offensive blocker, and as he gets varsity seasoning, should provide a worthy running mate for Lee Murray.

KENNETH WALLER-Sophomore-6-0-190-20 year old-Jeffer­sonville, Ind. Waller, a converted fullback, a standout on defense, in spring practice, and should give the position depth.

KEN BLACKBURN-Sophomore-6-0-185-19 years old-Green­ville, Ky. Another backfield transfer, Kenneth, probably the fasted lineman, and needs only seasoning in the new position to make a fine all-round end.

JIM WILDER-Sophomore-6-0-190-20 years old-Corbin, Ky. J im returns to the squad, after a years layoff. P robably one of the best fundamental players on the squad. He will see a lot of service, especially on offense, where he has excelled as a blocker.

BARRY POOLE-Senior-6-0-205-,-21 years old, Madisonville, Ky_ After an early career, handicapped by injuries, Poole last year de-

veloped into a fine offensive tackle and a great deal is expected of him in his final year.

JIM T A YLOR- Senior-6-2-195-22 years old-Clarksville, Tenn. Probably one of the most spirited football players on the squad . Taylor will see service on both offense and defense. He ex cells on defense.

HAROLD CHAMBERS-Junior-6-3-220-21 years old-Danville, Ky. Harold lettered in his sophomore year at the University of Ten­nessee as a tackle, and looked very good both on, defense and of­fense in spring practice. Much is expected of the former All State Fullback ' from Danville.

ROBERT GEPHART- J unior-6-3-225-21 years old-Louisville, Ky. Bob transferred from Kentucky. He was an outstanding per­former on the Flaget team in Louisville. He is a hardworker and should see a lot of service, especially on defense.

PAUL FINNESETH-Junior- 6-0-220- 21 years old-Ft. Thomas, Ky. Paul lettered last year and should see a great deal of service as tackle on offense and middle guard on defense and also as kick-off man.

JEFF GREEN-Sophomore-6-4-190-18 years old-Highland Park, Ill. One of the most spirited youngsters on the team, very ag­gressive on defense and only inexperience will hold him back this fall.

GUARDS

JOHN BARIOLA-Senior-6-0-200-22 years old-Moorhead, Miss. John is a Junior College graduate, played outstanding ball as inside linebacker last year, along with Joe Bugel. He should give Western outstanding linebacking. Bariola is a fine team man and could be one of the top guards in the league.

JOE BUGEL-Junior-6-0-215-25 years old-Munhall, Pa. Joe is expected to continue the high caliber ball that he displayed last year in his initial season at Western. He is a steady performer and a fine team man.

JOE IRACANE-Senior-5-10-205-22 years old-Brooklyn, N.Y. Joe should provide ample relief for either regular guard. He has fine spirit.

OLLIE NEWELL-Senior-5-8-185-24 years old-Pt. Pleasant, W . Va. Ollie is the brain on the football squad with a 2.8 average. Used largely in r elief last year, he will give the position depth this fall.

ROBERT HOLMAN, Junior-6-0-190-19 years old-Louisville, Ky. Bob, a product of Shawnee High School in Louisville, where he won All City and All State honors as a fullback. His intense desire to play resulted in his being shifted to guard where he was out­s tanding in spring practice.

FRED MILLER-Junior-6-0-200-22 years old-Louisville, Ky. Probably the best offensive guard on the team, does an excellent job of trapping and has high spirit. He will see service as a middle guard. Fred is a product of Flaget in Louisville.

ED CRUM-Sophomore-5-11-205~20 years old-Louisville, Ky. A fine kick-off man and an excellent offensive guard. He is being groomed for regular duty next year. Should see a lot of service this year in relief role and kick-off.

KENNY FRICK-Sophomore-6-0- 200-20 years old-Fern Creek, Ky. An All County selection Frick was impressive in spring prac­tice and is being groomed, as Crum's running mate for '63. He should see service this fall, especially on offense.

CENTERS

WALTER HAWKINS-Junior-6-0-210-20 years old-Elizabeth­town, Ky. Walter will serve in relief role as offensive tackle and middle-guard on defense. Only needs experience to play OVC ball.

GARY KELLY -Junior-5-11-190-19 years old-Cleveland, Tenn. Gary will share the pivot post with Bobby Westmoreland. He is a fine inside linebacker and a good offensive blocker.

BOBBY WES.TMORELAND-Junior-6-0-225-21 years old­Celina, Tenn. Bobby was outstanding last year as middle guard on defense and did a good job on offense. A good steady performer who will anchor the defensive line.

TOM MURRELL-Sophomore-6-0-200-19 years old-Mt. Leb­anon, Ohio. Tommy is being groomed for heavy duty as a center.

He does a fine job both offensively and defensively and has good spirit.

RICHARD TenBARGE-Sophomore-6-0-200-19 years old~Mt. Carmel, Ill. All State man in Illinois, Dick only needs ambition to become a good OVC football player.

BACKS

Quarterbacks

JIM DAILY-Senior-6-4-180-22 years old-New Albany, Ind. A fine player. Jim will. be starting his 4th year at quarterback for the Hilltoppers. He has improved his running tremendously in the past year. He can be as good as he wants to.

BILL STRAUB-Junior-5-7-170-22 years old-Ft. Thomas, Ky. Bill is probably the keenest football student on the team. ' After a fine early start; injuries slowed him down the latter part of 'la'st year. He has excellent generalship and will see ? lot of service, 'especially on offense.

SHARON MILLER-Sophomore-5-11-160-19 years old-Mt. 'Carmel, Ill. Sharon probably, the best .all round quarterback on the ,club, needs only experience to blossom out as one of Western's greatest. His actions reminds railbirds of Jim Feix, Western's All American quarterback, a decade ago.

Halfbacks

WOODY BARWICK-Senior-5.-11-175--,-22 years old, Oak Ridge, Tenn. Woody, a fine kicker, a determined runner, and should see a lot of offensive service this fall.

BUZZY BEST-Senior-6-0-190-23 years old-~Iizabethtown,

Ky. Probably possesses more natural ability than<,most backs in Kentucky. He has been a steady performer for the past two years :and excells on defense, especially pass defense. Buzzy will be ex­pected to hold the defensive backfield together this fall .

BOBBY MITCHELL-Senior-5-7-165-21 years old-Oak Ridge, 'Tenn. Bobby has given Western three fine years on both offense ·and defense although he ex cells at corner linebacker. He is the 'team's punter.

CARSON CULLER-Junior-5-10-170-21 year old-Garrett, Ind. Carson is an outstanding defensive man and better than average on offense. He will see a lot of service as corner linebacker this fall.

JIM BURT-Sophomore-6-3- 190-19 years old-Ft. Thomas, Ky _ Jim, as a 17 year old freshman developed into the teams outstand­ing running back. Gained more yardage than any Hilltopper back, in the last ten years, and rated 3rd in the OVC in ball carrying. He is a fine pass receiver and saved Western, at least, 7 touchdowns last year on defense. Like his brother, John, he should go down in Hilltop history as an All Time Great.

SAM CLARK-Sophomore-5-11-165-19 years old-Tompkins­ville, Ky. Sam, as a freshman last year, did all the field goal and extra point kicking. This spring he blossomed out as a running back and should push one of the older m en for a starting role.

LLOYD NASH-Senior-5-10-190-22 years old-Owensboro, Ky. Lloyd, rated as the best corner linebacker in the league, returns after being laid low by scholastics troubles for a year. Always known as a steady work-horse, Lloyd will help the team tremen­dously both on offense and defense.

Fullbacks

JOE JAGGERS-Senior-6-0-185-22 years old-P rinceton, Ky .. Joe, an all state performer at Princeton under former Hilltop great, Fred Clayton, came into his own as an offensive back last year. While not very fast he is especially shifty and can be depended upon to move the ball against any opposition.

JOHN BURT-Sophomore-5-11-190- 19 years old-Ft. Thomas, Ky. Twice All State Fullback on State Championship teams, the older of the Burt brothers, was sidelined last year with a broken leg. A terrific competitor, there is every reason to believe that he will match his brilliant prep school reputation in the next four years on the Hilltop.

DA VID PEAK-Sophomore- 5-11-190- 20 years old-Louisville, Ky. Dave was outstanding back at Shawnee, where he led the city in scoring, a hard, determined runner he will be seeing spot service this fall.

TOM CORBETT-Sophomore-5-11-190-23 years old-Lebanon, Ky. Tom, after a brilliant career at Lebanon, entered the army for a 3 year hitch. He should provide depth at fullback spot and will probably develop into a steady performer as he gets over his rusti­ness caused by his lay-over in the army.
