AGGIE TRADITIONSaGGieSYears ago in this region, the United States met its destiny in the west, Mexico affirmed its northern border along a great river and Native Americans lived with abundant pride and love for their land. Throughout this blend of cultures, brave men and women cultivated area lands to feed their families and support their communities, despite the unforgiving setting that is the desert southwest. In perfecting these abilities, they made themselves masters of agriculture, and thus, Aggies.

PiStol PeteA western gunman from the late 1800s named Frank Eaton is the inspiration for the mascot, Pistol Pete. According to legend, Eaton was a quick draw and marksman by age 15. Impressed by Eaton’s shooting skill, a commanding officer at Fort Gibson reportedly gave to the young Eaton a medal and a nickname: Pistol Pete. In 1881, in Albuquerque, N.M., Eaton reportedly killed the last of the men responsible for robbing and killing his father. Eaton’s wild-west adventures led him to be more than a cowboy, scout, trail rider and deputy U.S. Marshall – it made him a legend.

Today, a select NM State student wears a hat, mustache, vest and rodeo buckle, portraying the legendary Eaton, while spreading the Aggie spirit on and off campus.

CrimSon & WHiteOne of the most basic symbols that trigger emotion, pride and a sense of identity is color; for an Aggie, those colors are crimson and white. Crimson, one of the most emotionally stimulating colors in the spectrum, represents power, vigor, strength and leadership. To many, white represents purity, innocence, prestige and good as well as springtime and summer, the season when crops are planted. In the education setting, white represents new beginnings.

tHe “a”The “A” on Tortugas Mountain was the end result of a prank played by agriculture and mechanical arts (engineering) students. Around campus and in different locations, students would place giant “A”s on buildings. In the 1920s, a giant “A” found a permanent home on Tortugas Mountain. The symbol is made out of large stones and each stone is whitewashed. The tradition of painting the “A” continues as a part of Campus Service Day during Greek Week, and it is lit up for the football season and special events.

tHe Pride marCHinG BandThe Pride of New Mexico is the marching band at New Mexico State University. It is composed of approximately 150 of the finest musicians, dancers and auxiliary in the nation. The purpose of the Pride is to provide entertainment at football games, parades and almost any New Mexico State event. The Pride hosts a major marching band competition in the fall – the Tournament of Bands. The members and staff of the Pride make it their goal to be the best marching band in the nation. The Pride is not just an ensemble, it is a family with everlasting ties.

CHeerleaderSThe NM State cheerleading program has two coed cheerleading squads – one large and one small – and, of course, our beloved mascot Pistol Pete. Before school starts in the fall,

The squads attend National Cheerleading Association camp and practice for the upcoming season. In the fall, both squads cheer

At the football and volleyball games. During the basketball season, the large squad cheers at men’s basketball games and the small squad cheers at women’s basketball games. In addition, the NM State cheerleaders are asked to make many public appearances throughout the year at other athletic events, as well as university and community events. In 2015, the New Mexico State cheerleading program swept USA Nationals in Anaheim, California, bringing home three national titles. The cheerleaders dedicate many hours of their time to practice,

games and public appearances each year to represent the University.

AGGIE TRADITIONS

ViCtory BellIn the 1940s, the Victory Bell, a gift of the Class of 1939, was housed in an open-sided structure on the Horseshoe and rung to announce Aggie victories. In 1972, the bell was rededicated as the Engineer’s Bell and for years sat on a platform near Goddard Hall. For many years, on game days, various school organizations took turns toting the ringing bell around Las Cruces prior to kickoff. Then it was moved inside the stadium to chime triumphantly during the game. In recent years, the bell was mounted permanently inside the stadium.

FIGHT SONG

Aggies, Oh Aggies! The hills send back the cry,We’re here to do or die!Aggies, Oh Aggies! We’ll win this game or know the reason why!

And when we win this game,We’ll buy a keg of booze,And we’ll drink it to the Aggies ‘til we wobble in our shoes!

COMPLIANCEThe New Mexico State University (NM State) Athletics Department takes great pride in abiding by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Sunbelt Conference rules and guidelines that govern Division I competition. For the benefit of the many alumni, fans and booster club members who are so active in supporting and assisting the Aggies throughout the year, we would like to remind everyone of a few definitions and rules that apply to all athletic representatives and boosters.

Institutional ControlIt is the responsibility of NM State to control its intercollegiate athletic program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA.

ResponsibilityNM State’s responsibility for the conduct of its program includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual, booster or organization engaged in activities promoting the athletic interests of the institution.

ComplianceNM State must monitor its program to ensure compliance and to identify and report to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved. An institution found to have violated NCAA rules is subject to disciplinary and corrective actions as determined by the NCAA.

NCAA DefinitionsAthletic Representative/BoosterYou are considered to be a NM State athletic representative if you:• Are a present or past member of a NM State booster club or agency that promotes the Aggies’ intercollegiate athletic program.• Have made financial contributions to the athletic department or to an athletic booster organization of NM State.• Are or have been providing benefits (e.g., summer jobs, meals, etc.) to enrolled student-athletes, their family members or friends.• Are or have been involved in any manner of promoting the NM State intercollegiate athletic program.

Please note: Once an individual is identified as an athletic representative, that person retains that identity indefinitely. NM State is ultimately responsible for the acts of all “representatives of athletic interest” in relation to NCAA rules and regulations.

Prospective Student-AthleteA prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep school and junior colleges as well as students who have officially withdrawn from a four-year institution and plan to transfer to another institution. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution or a booster provides the individual or the individual’s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. A good rule of thumb is to treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects.

Student-AthleteA student-athlete is a student whose enrollment was solicited by a member of the athletic staff or other representative of athletic interest with a view toward the student’s ultimate participation in the intercollegiate athletic program.

ContactContact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect, or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian, and an institutional staff member or athletic representative during which any dialogue occurs.

RecruitingRecruiting is any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect’s family member (or guardian) by an institutional staff member or by athletic representative of the institution for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution’s intercollegiate athletic program.

Guidelines and Reminders for Boosters• A booster may not contact the prospect, prospect’s coach, principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate or recruit the prospect.• A booster may not expend funds to entertain or provide transportation for a prospective student-athlete, family members or friends.• A booster may not become directly or indirectly involved in making arrangements for a prospect, or the prospect’s relatives or friends, to receive money or financial aid of any kind. • A booster may not contact a prospective student-athlete through letter writing, telephone calling or other forms of communication.

However, here are a few ways that an Aggie booster may be involved:• Do discuss summer employment opportunities with a prospect after he/she has signed a National Letter of Intent with NM State.• Do attend high school athletic events without contacting prospective student-athletes.• Do continue existing friendships with families and friends of prospective student-athletes.• Do send recommendation letters, newspaper clippings or similar information about prospective student-athletes to Aggie coaches.

Here are a few ways that an Aggie booster may help:• Do invite a student-athlete to participate in non-profit, charitable or educational events.• Do invite a student-athlete into your home for an occasional meal.• Do contact the NM State Athletic Compliance Office for approval prior to a student-athlete engaging in outside speaking or promotional activities.• Do pay a student-athlete the commensurate rate for actual and legitimate employment.

PLEASE CALL THE AGGIE COMPLIANCE OFFICE IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS: 575-646-
