Politics of the Modern World
THE COLONIES • Gained independence during the Cold War. • Struggled to establish strong governments. • Re-distributing land & wealth was common after colonialism. • Wanted to remain “Non-Aligned.” • Forced to permanently pick sides in Cold War..
What is Capitalism?• Founder
o Adam Smith. o Scottish Philosopher. o Wealth of Nations, 1776.
• Big Ideas: o Free Markets o Invisible Hand o Profit Motive o Limited government involvement – Laissez-faire o Strengths
• Growth and expansion of industry and infrastructure. • Consumer is king; goods are produced to meet his
needs. o Weaknesses
• Uneven distribution of wealth. • Volatile business cycles. • Damage to the environment..
DISCUSSION:1. Should it be illegal for a shoe company to
charge $1,000 for a pair of shoes? 2. Should it be illegal for a gas company to
charge $20.00 for a gallon of gas? 3. Should there be a guaranteed Minimum
Wage? 4. Should it be illegal for a business to dump
toxic chemicals into a river? Q. How would you answer these questions? Q. How would a pure capitalist answer these questions?
What is Socialism?• Big Thinkers
o Robert Owen, Charles Fourier, Louis Blanc. • Big Ideas:
o Capitalism is inherently unequal. o Factory Owners Can Rectify Situation (Utopian) o Collective ownership o Government regulation o Government ownership o Strengths:
• Market socialism provides a more equal distribution of wealth
• Safer and healthier work environment o Weaknesses:
• Utopians depend on the good will of the owners..
What is Marxism/Communism?• Founders
o Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels – Germans reacting to horrors of Industry. o The Communist Manifesto, 1848 & Capital, 1867
• Big Ideas: o History can best be understood as class struggle. o Profit comes from work of Proletariat but is reaped by the Bourgeoisie. o Employers will pay lowest wage possible (“Iron law of wages”) o Private property should be abolished o Workers will rise in a bloody revolution to overthrow the owners o Strengths
• Equality is a good intention. • Attempting to rectify the wrongs of Capitalism.
o Weaknesses • Violence. • Lack of incentive to work hard. • Corruption of leaders. • Fails because of human greed, as does unregulated Capitalism..
Discussion• Where does the United States fall into these
philosophies?
