•  Growth and expansion of industry and infrastructure. •  Consumer is king; goods are produced to meet his

needs. o Weaknesses

•  Uneven distribution of wealth. •  Volatile business cycles. •  Damage to the environment..

What is Socialism?•  Big Thinkers

o  Robert Owen, Charles Fourier, Louis Blanc. •  Big Ideas:

o Capitalism is inherently unequal. o  Factory Owners Can Rectify Situation (Utopian) o Collective ownership o Government regulation o Government ownership o Strengths:

•  Market socialism provides a more equal distribution of wealth

•  Safer and healthier work environment o Weaknesses:

•  Utopians depend on the good will of the owners..

What is Marxism/Communism?•  Founders

o  Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels – Germans reacting to horrors of Industry. o  The Communist Manifesto, 1848 & Capital, 1867

•  Big Ideas: o  History can best be understood as class struggle. o  Profit comes from work of Proletariat but is reaped by the Bourgeoisie. o  Employers will pay lowest wage possible (“Iron law of wages”) o  Private property should be abolished o  Workers will rise in a bloody revolution to overthrow the owners o  Strengths

•  Equality is a good intention. •  Attempting to rectify the wrongs of Capitalism.

o  Weaknesses •  Violence. •  Lack of incentive to work hard. •  Corruption of leaders. •  Fails because of human greed, as does unregulated Capitalism..
