Oh Mary Don’t you weep don’t you moan (traditional)
O Mary, don't you weep, don't you mourn O Mary, don't you weep, don't you mourn Pharaoh's army got drowned O Mary, don't you weep
Some of these mornings bright and fair Take my wings and cleave the air Pharaoh's army got drowned O Mary, don't you weep
When I get to heaven goin' to sing and shout Nobody there for turn me outPharaoh's army got drowned O Mary don't you weep
When I get to Heaven goin' to put on my shoes Run about glory and tell all the news Pharaoh's army got drowned O Mary don't you weep
"Mary Don't You Weep" (alternately titled "O Mary Don't You Weep", "Oh Mary, Don't You Weep, Don't You Mourn", or variations thereof) is a Negro spiritual that originates from before the American Civil War – thus it is what scholars call a "slave song," It is one of the most important of Negro spirituals. Many recordings have been made, by artists ranging from The Soul Stirrers to Burl Ives. Pete Seeger gave it additional folk music visibility by performing it at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, and played it many times throughout his career, adapting the lyrics and stating the song's relevance as an American song, not just a spiritual.
