U3A Cairns Inc. Page 2 COMMITTEE MEMBER OF THE MONTH Merril Molloy, Our New U3A Secretary Merril has gallantly taken on this new challenge with a smile and time for everyone.
BOOK CLUB – TWO Monday 5th October 10–12pm, Mulgrave Room. We meet regardless of the holiday. True Spirit by Jessica Watson s the story of the sixteen year old Australian girl who sailed solo, non-stop, and unassisted
around the world. Her book takes us from her childhood and her dream of sailing around the globe all the way to the completion of her epic journey, when she sailed triumphantly into Sydney Harbour. Her story is inspirational to young people everywhere. It is such an exciting account but when she was out there alone many of us were worried for her safety. Convenor: Merril Molloy 4058 1809. BOOK CLUB – THREE Date: Monday 5th October 1.15 - 3pm, Mulgrave Room
Manhattan 1996: The trial of the Vanderbilt claimant is finally coming to an end. The case has been seeking to establish whether or not a man is the son of this fabulously wealthy family. The Claimant is a brilliant reworking of
the Tichborne case, which made headlines in both the British and Australian Press in the late nineteenth century. Convenor: Jill Greaves 4051 1765 BOOK CLUB – FOUR
2nd Monday 12th Oct. 1.15-3pm Scott Room The Book Thief by Markus Zusak It is 1939 in Nazi Germany. By her brother’s graveside, Liesel’s
life is changed when she picks up The Gravedigger’s Handbook. Left there by accident, it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor’s wife’s library and wherever there are books. Convenor: Jac Waters 4045 3336 BRIDGE - BEGINNERS
