Message from the President I would like to take this opportunity in thanking the outgoing President- Paul Fahie for his unfailing hard work and dedication to the committee. For steering us through what can only be described as a ‘mine field’ of new government legislations and policies, to keep us on track over the coming years. Paul was a great President and was open to new ideas both from within the committee and the membership. I would also like to take this opportunity in thanking the past committee for their hard work and tireless efforts in keeping and organizing events for our members. This is done on a purely voluntary basis and without their help, this Chapter would not exist. I offer my congratulations to the new committee members who were elected at the AGM and those committee members who have been reelected. I am confident we can all work together over the coming year to provide our members with a wide and varied choice of interests that will stimulate our minds and help to attract new members. I can assure members that there will be no unnecessary changes to how our Chapter is run, for the time being anyway. Communication between members will still play a vital part in keeping us a healthy organisation. This newsletter is only one avenue in which to we can use to circulate information to everyone. I would like members to feel free to talk to either myself or to a committee member in confidence about any concerns or new ideas they may have. Our contact numbers are at the back of this newsletter or you can speak to us during morning tea break. Committee members can be easily identified by the colour of their badges. Our Educational officer – Diane Flegg will continue to seek out and organise courses for our members. Diane has some interesting and exciting new ideas already. The courses she has run so far this year have been an outstanding success, but she needs members to help run 1 U3A ARMADALE NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2018

I thank all those sub group leaders for volunteering their time to help meet the demands of activities already requested. A list of these activities can be found within this newsletter. To ensure the success of these sub groups, new members are always required. If groups do not get enough support, they risk closure which would be unfortunate after the hard work group leaders have done in setting them up.Finally, I would like to thank Keith Durrans in offering to take over the publication of the newsletters as from December. I have written the newsletters for the last six years and feel it is now time to have a new publicity person with fresh ideas to take us forward. If any member has an article or an idea they would like mentioning in the newsletter, please speak to Keith. Thank you to all who have sent past contributions to me; please feel free to continue.

On a sunny morning in May two of your committee members – Dene and Sheila met at Santa’s Workshop in Cannington to present to the volunteers, toys, puzzles and books which had been given to U3A for children who were deprived.

Throughout the year, Dene put out a request for anyone who had or knew of anyone who had toys which were no longer in use. It doesn’t matter if they need some paint or maintenance as Santa has little workers to restore the items back to their former glory!

Santa’s Workshop is a volunteer run service of Outcare, the major non-government provider of crime prevention services and programs in WA.

Not only does Santa’s Workshop provide items for deprived children in WA but they also support school in Timor.

Dene will continue to collect toys for WA children throughout the year, as well as collect any items that can be used in schools. Items will include books, old encyclopedias, pencils, paper and crayons etc.

The volunteers told us that the Lions club, South Perth fund raised and purchased old sea containers, which they turned into classrooms before shipping them to Timor.

If you have anything you would like to donate, please contact Dene on 0417400918 or bring them to the the full members meeting on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

The 6 session Musical Tardis, with Rachel John, proved to be so successful that a second 6 session course is now underway and being enjoyed by 23 people. Many aspects of music and its effects are being discovered and discussed and participants are encouraged to learn more about how music is made and how it can influence our well- being. All this with much fun to be had on the way. This, our first professional course, made possible by the generous grant from 2nd Chance, has shown that our members appreciate the opportunity to learn in a relaxed environment and hopefully future courses will be as well received.

U3A Online is a resource that is also proving to be a popular learning tool for those 18 members who are currently studying Antarctica. Paul adjusted the format so that each topic can be projected on the screen in an understandable way and as it is worked through, everyone joins in the discussion that is generated. Homework is involved, but is fairly shared and not too onerous!

A survey of members led to Antarctica being chosen for the first topic and Wednesday the most popular day. Astrology came a close second, so will probably be the next choice and Thursday may be given as the meeting day. We try to enable as many wishing to participate, to be able to do so.

There will be further visit to the Art Gallery in a few weeks to have a look at the Sidney Nolan visiting exhibition.

The singing group is still forming but will hopefully get under way before too long.

Do communicate any ideas or proposals that you have about any area of discovery and learning, and I will endeavour to make it happen.

As we hear tales of the classical past

From the soaring to the dirge

And the lift to the surge

The delivery of knowledge discerning

An infinite pleasure in the learning

Deeply layered in ethos

And entrenched in pathos

How much music is great for the soul

In so many facets it plays a role

Dreaming to dance

First love to romance

Thunder and lightning

A spectre so frightening

A babbling brook

A secluded nook

Grief and disaster

In the hands of the master

A picture is portrayed

And now the orchestra’s part has been played

A wonderful day was had by all, when our bus trip on the 29th May took us to Toodyay and the Swan Valley. We left the Evelyn Gribble Centre on time and made our way to Noble Falls for a tea/coffee break. We then travelled on to Coorinja Winery for a visit to their wine cellar for a spot of tasting and a purchase or two!

A recorded history of Toodyay was given over the broadcast system on the coach followed by a short tour of the town.

An enjoyable roast lunch followed by dessert and tea/coffee was provided at the Freemasons Hotel followed by a surprise glass of port after the meal. We had just enough time to visit the famous Christmas Shop before getting back onto the bus and making our way to the Chittering Valley and stopping to sample some freshly squeezed orange juice and purchase some citrus fruits.

With wine and bags of fruit in tow, we made our way back to the Evelyn Gribble Centre arriving just after 4pm.

Everyone appeared to have had a good time and said they were looking forward to the next trip.

Mike would like to arrange some local outings, destinations yet to be decided. If anyone has any ideas of interesting places where the group may like to go, please contact Mike on 93985613 or email [email protected]

The Book Club meet within a friendly, respectful atmosphere on the fourth Friday of each month at the Kelmscott Library, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, during February to November. At the end of each year, the group members discuss and choose a book which they would like to read for each month throughout the following year. As each month comes around, the person who chose the book, chairs the meeting. This can be great fun as it is up to the ‘chair’ to decide how the meeting should be run, what questions to ask and a light refreshment.

The reading list for the remainder of this year is as follows -

21st September First Person Richard Flanigan

26th October Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine Gail Honeyman

23rd November The Good People Hannah Kent

On 11th July members of the CLT group organized a surprise coffee morning for Sheila at Raymon’s at Willow Pond, Canning vale to celebrate her birthday. Chocolates, flowers, a signed card and even a small cake with a candle on top all bought a smile to her face. Sheila was so grateful to all the friends who made this a lovely morning and feels humbled that they all did this for her. A big thank you!

west and showed fantastic scenes in and above the ocean. We followed the maturing of two teenage boys, who in their pursuit of surfing faced many problems and dealt with them in differing ways. Great acting by them and by Simon Baker.

June saw us again in Armadale to see The Book Shop. We followed the struggles of a determined young woman to establish a book shop in a small town that did not want it. A bit drawn out at times, but worth watching.

As July brought the school holidays, when Armadale movie theatre is full of kid-orientated films, we ventured to Cinema Paradiso to overhear the conversations of Tea with the Dames. For those of us with an admiration for Judy Dench, Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright, this was entertaining and enlightening. We enjoyed a light lunch at Dome before the movie.

The Don Russell Theatre had a Karen Carpenter tribute in July and will be enjoying some jazz with the Gumnut Stompers in August. In September it will be A Boy named Cash. All these Wednesday morning shows are affordable, and Thornlie is not too far away.

WASO morning concerts are well worth the trip into Perth Concert Hall. Recently a few members have enjoyed Ravel’s Bolero, Mahler’s Symphony 4 and Prokofiev’s 5th Symphony.

If anyone wishes to attend any of these performances – or any other that you hear about, then do contact me. Diane Flegg [email protected]

The Recreational Ramblers Group (4th Friday in a month)

Aim: To encourage anyone to enjoy a relaxing walk with others

Friday May 22 Raeburn Orchard, Roleystone (Persimmon Festival)

Unfortunately, the weather was horrendous, but Diana Williams (a country girl) and I braved the wind and rain. It was really quite exciting. The torrential rain and deluge caused a temporary waterfall off the car park and a raging torrent down the main paths, on both sides of the valley; but it could not dampen our spirits to enjoy the magnificent colours on the persimmon trees.

The word persimmon comes from the Algonquian Indians of the NE of the North American continent. It means a dry fruit.

They are indigenous to that area, as they are in Europe and Asia. Japan in particular has quite a few different ones.

The wood, which is similar to ebony, has been used for decades to make the long driver or ‘wood’ in golf.

The Raeburn Orchard grows a variety of fruit, and has one chestnut tree at the top of the valley.

The anticipated ‘hot’ drink in the Roleystone café ‘The Orchard’, to say the least, was enjoyed a lot more than usual.

Friday June 22 The Glades, Byford

We walked along the new paths adjacent to the small wetlands area. Luckily, after heavy rain, there was water flowing along the creek bed. We reached the local Community Garden, and two of us (Pam M. and myself) enjoyed a run on a new ‘Flying Fox’, which is part of a brand new play area, which has been designed to cope with teenage use, and is very robust. After turning around and following a different return route, we enjoyed some ‘repartee’ in the Strand Lakeside Café.

Friday July 27 Minnawarra Park, Armadale

The reason for this walk, was to experience all the new work that has been done on either side of Armadale Road. There are: new lights, a revamped lake perimeter, additional all weather paths, a mini boardwalk over the main lake, and exotic plant garden beds. It is now a little more civilised.

We started and then finished at Café Me for a coffee or snack. Please join us on our next ramble. Keith Durrans 0417 189 312
