WHAT IS VIRTUALIZATION?

Virtualization is a technology that allows you to transform hardware into software.

Virtualization allows you to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single computer.

Each copy of an operating system is installed into a virtual machine.

Virtualization is not either of these: Simulation Emulation

BENEFITS OF A VIRTUAL MACHINE

Difficult to move or copy

Bound to a specific set of hardware components

Often has short life cycle

Requires personal contact to upgrade hardware

Virtual Machine

• Easy to manage• Isolated from

other virtual machines running on the same physical hardware

• Insulated from physical hardware changes

Physical Machine• Easy to move and copy

• Encapsulated into files• Independent of physical

hardware

VIRTUALIZATION OF SERVERS

Physical Servers are typically utilized up to 12-15% ($4,500 out of $30,000)

Virtualized servers’ recommended utilization is up to 65% (some use as high as 90% - $27,000 out of $30,000!)

St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers: Consolidation ratio of 35 virtual machines to

each physical host Nearly 85 percent of St. Vincent’s production

environment has been virtualized Savings in power and cooling costs - $3.4 million

VIRTUALIZATION OF STORAGE The availability of 100 percent for virtual servers is

highly dependent on the availability of SAN running in the background of virtualized servers.

IP-based systems provide great scalability and standards. Protocols such as FCIP and iFCP provide vast benefits to enterprise network storage systems but also have certain limitations.

iSCSI evolved a protocol that does not involve the use of any FC equipment (i.e., it is all Ethernet-based.) iSCSI simply transports SCSI commands over TCP/IP
