I CAN SAY IN ALL HONESTY THAT IN MYGENERATION, WE WERE MIXED MARTIALARTISTS BEFORE THE TERM WAS EVENINVENTED.

    This issue marks the 20th

anniversary of the UFC. Yikes. That wasfast! And I passed a personal milestone

recently, too: 40 continuous years of

    martial arts training and teaching.

Thats right, Young Pups, I was kickin

and punchin and throwin before yall

were even a glimmer in your dear ole

    pappys eye.

So what does all that mean? After

retiring with one of the best competitive

records in the history of black belt karate

competition and having an American flagflown over the White House in honor of

my achievements, I think it means I get

to say this: Taking the time to look back,

I can say in all honesty that in my

    generation, we were mixed martial

artists before the term was even invented!

Wait! Relax! Stop throwing your Mountain Dew and Cheetos and chill out!

Listen up. In our day, you had to get a blackbelt in karate andjudo andjiu-jitsu

to be a true mixed martial artist (and yeah, I really did walk a few miles in the

snow to get to my dojo every dayfor real).

So please, if youre serious about your training and you love the UFC and

MMA as much as we do here, then Im begging youlearn your basics now.

Listen to your wrestling coach, your sensei, your sifu. Practice, practice, practice.

And remember, its better to be good at a couple of things than mediocre at a lot

of things. Just ask the dude (or lady) who made somebody surrender to a

savage armbar or knocked out their opponent in the octagon. Theyll tell you.

And I hope in the future youll look back over your last 20 or 40 years and feel

good about what youve accomplished. I know I have.

I am in the Octagon before you arrive. While you walk outmusic blaring, lights flashing and fans screamingI am preparing,

I am strategizing for I am about to unleash my assault. When you finally step into my house, you dont even notice the smirk on my face. You

    Tiny.

That is Emanuel Yarbroughs nickname, and he

is a familiar face to mixed martial arts fans worldwide. At 6

feet 7 inches, at one time topping the scales at more than800 pounds, Yarbrough holds the Guinness World Record

    as the Worlds Largest Athlete.

He is also a former UFC fighter.

Now at 48 years of age, the man who competed in UFC

3 in 1994 has shed roughly 100 of those pounds after

    suffering major health setbacks.

Yarbrough competed professionally as a mixed martial

artist three times with his only win coming at Shoot the

Shooto XX against Tatsuaki Nakano via submission due to

smother (no surprise there) at just 1:17 in the first round.

At UFC 3, he lost to Keith Hackney by TKO, who then

adopted the apt nickname, The Giant Killer.

He does not know the exact number of matches that he has

competed in, but he knows he did well.

If I had 100 matches, I won more than 80 of them, he says.

    MMA HALL OF FAME

Earlier this year Yarbrough was inducted the MMA Hall of

Fame, something he is both proud of but also embarrassed by.

I look at some of the guys in this hall and I know Im not on

A typical week of workouts for the 30members of the team, broken down into10 person classes, consists of a Monday,Wednesday, Friday schedule consistingof a 9:30-11:00am class covering MMA

fundamentals like striking, getting youropponent to the mat and submitting.

Should be enough, right? Nope. That isfollowed by a 2:30-4:00pm class thatfocuses on striking fundamentals.

When the guys get tired, we getbetter. We get stronger. I make sure ofthat, Ludwig says.

    Question

    Hey Hot Chick,

I want to ask this girl out, but any chick I date needs to like MMA.Pete in Chicago

    Pete,

First & foremost, heres a quick difference between men and boys: Men take women out on dates; Boys want tohang out.

Clearly, taking women out on dates is the superior move. Still, a lot of guys arent sure how to ask out a woman, especially if the man has stipulations. Do not feel bad its not something at which our generation excels. A lot ofguys need a few pointers on how to do this the right way.

First, call her on the phone. Dont ask her out via text message or Facebook chat or whatever. You need to pick upyour fancy smartphone and actually dial her number. This shows that youre a confident man and it gives you a farbetter stance from which to ask for the date.

Further, shell take you much more seriously than if you make plans via texting or chat. Youll set this interactionapart from others, subtly making the point that shes special enough to put in the effort of real-time communication.

Then make sure you have plans in order. When you call a woman for a date, you need to have something to do. Infact, you need to have three things to do, because she might not like the first one. If you pitch her three and shesnot interested in any of them, you can be confident that she just doesnt want to go out with you and you can alsoeliminate whether she likes MMA.

INSIDE THE CAGE [NEWS, MUSIC & MORE]

    TOMMYS WORLD

OrI Wish I Had a FlamingChainsaw Right About Now

Art Jimmerson changed theworld of mixed martial arts as much asRoyce Gracie did, and he didnt even throwa single punch.

For those who dont remember ArtJimmerson, he was that guy who wore oneglove in his fight against Royce Gracie atUFC 1. An IBC boxing champion with 20KOs, Art was set to face a guy twentypounds lighter than he was who wore afunny judo top, as one announcer called it.

Art decided on just one glove that nightbecause two bare fists from his experiencedhands didnt seem fair to little Royce.Unbeknownst to Jimmerson, he could haveworn a flaming chainsaw on his hand thatnight it wouldnt have mattered.

Confused by Gracies movement, judotop and leg kicks, Jimmerson never threw areal strike in the minute before Graciefeinted and went for the takedown. Once onthe ground, it took Gracie less than five sec-onds to go from side control to full mount, making Art Jimmerson the new mayor ofF***edville.

HELP ME!Even the casual MMA fan today would

look at Arts predicament and know that hewas in some deep doo-doo. But this was1993. Art couldnt Google a video of his op-ponent snapping somebodys arm in half orwatch a how to on escaping the mount. He couldnt even look up videos of catsbeing adorable.

Art sensed he was in trouble though, sohe pulled Royce towards him in an attemptto keep the Brazilian from doing whateverthe hell it is a jiu-jitsu master does. Theirony: the glove Jimmerson wore to protect

Gracie would now make gripping his gi asimpossible as stopping GSP from getting atakedown.

After sixty seconds of trying to telepathi-cally disintegrate his one glove, Art wasforced to tap. It wasnt an armbar or akimura that did him in though. He tapped toa cocktail of fear, frustration and at ton ofconfusion. The experienced Vale Tudo reflooked to Jimmerson the way you might lookat someone who folds their hand before any-one made a bet in poker, but it was too lateand Art had had enough of whatever it wasRoyce Gracie was doing to him.

HIS GIFT TO HUMANITYArt Jimmerson has since figured out what

was happening on that fateful night inColorado. So has the rest of the world. Tothe 1993 viewer of UFC 1, Arts behaviorprobably didnt seem that questionable, andif he had managed to connect with Royceschin that night, I might be writing about howGracie didnt understand boxing.

Like the early humans who figured out

that fire was hot and that lions do not enjoyhaving their tails pulled, the combatants whostepped into the cage at UFC 1 learned les-sons the hard way. These pioneers showedthe martial arts world the things that didntwork and ideas like a single glove werethrown out the window. What were left withis the summation of thousands of ArtJimmersons getting their asses kicked. Aunified martial art that takes into account allthe best of every discipline, giving us the

JBJs and GSPs of the world. So laugh at Art Jimmersons one glove if

you must, but without it, we wouldnt havemixed martial arts as we know it today.

UMMA: You had to get two surgeries tofix it?TF: It was crazy shattered. The firstsurgery didnt go so well. After six monthsI was only at about 75%. So I went to adifferent doctor and got a second opinion. He said the plate I had in there was for anaverage person, so they put in a hugeplate that has nine screws in it.

UMMA: Do you set off metal detectors

at airports now?TF: Yeah. Ive actually set off a couple. Itsfunny. Sometimes when security checksme at the door with one of those wands, they go off! They get freaked out and ask,Whats that? And I say, I got a plate inmy arm, dude!

UMMA: What was your mental frame ofmind in dealing with recovering from theinjury?TF: Just forgetting about it. Mentally, physically, Im looking past it to the pointwhere I have no limitations. Im not muchfor talking about how I feel, how Im doing.I like to show it instead.

UMMA: Do you think about it/ worry itwill happen again?TF: I broke my arm in football a long timeago. Things are going to happen incontact sports. If youre not ready for it,youre not in the right sport. Plus, thereare other people who worry for me. Imnot worried about winning, about losing,Im just thinking about making it happen. Icant be cautious.

Getting hurt? Tony El CucuyFerguson (13-3) feels like it comes withthe territory. Football? Baseball? MMA?Injuries are just par for the course.

This 511 (6 on a good day), 155-pound lightweight from Costa Mesa,California, trains with Reign and has beenfeeling wonderful lately and like he should

be doing more. Wait training and fight-ing after an arm break and multiple surger-ies isnt enough?

Ultimate MMA: Youre tall for alightweight. Are you comfortable at yourweight? Is there pressure to bulk up?Tony Ferguson: In college I used towrestle a little bit lighter, but now, I guessmy training is more structured. Signingwith Paradigm brought in a couple ofnutritionists, so now its all about powerfoods. Building lean muscle, especiallyafter the injury.

UMMA: Tell us about how you brokeyour arm during the Michael Johnson UFCfight.TF: It was crazy. It was a good one, thenall of a sudden it was havoc. It wassurvival. He threw a set of roundhousekicks from a south-paw position, I used myarm to shield it. It felt like it was hurt, notinjured. But it cracked the ulna. I justfought my way through it. Ive been insports a long time, Im used to getting hit. Then later they told me it was broken.

UMMA: Whats it like training at Reign, alongside guys like Jake Ellenberger andMark Munoz?TF: Theres a couple of tough guys inthere, sure. Even if theyre not my weight,Im getting good, good rounds in. Impushed past my barriers. BJJ, wrestling, all that. I almost juked in the bucket onceor twice, but Ive gotten over that.

UMMA: How are you preparing for UFC166 in Houston?TF: Staying focused. Liftinga lot moreweights. I put myself in check after seeingmyself in an interviewit looked like I washaving too much fun. Im here to winchampionships. I have to get my recordback. I had a string of knock-outs.

UMMA: Whos a big influence in yourlife?TF: My dad hes my step-dad. Been inthe picture since I was young. This guyalways told me if youre going to dosomething, then do itdont half-ass it.

Thats what formed me. He was in aTough Man competition back in the day,so he knows how tough this can be. Hewould watch those old UFC fights and Ithought it was the coolest thing. I knew Iwanted to be a professional fighter.

UMMA: What's the worst injury you'vehad in your life - MMA or not?TF: I was 16 and I flipped my dads 4-Wheeler in Michigan. We had forty acresby our house and my dad was like, Dontride the 4-Wheeler while Im gone. So Ifound where he hid the keys and said tomy friends, Im gonna do this jump.Instead of 4th gear, I hit 3rd instead, launched myself off the jump into a briarpatch. I got concussed, got trappedunder the engine, burnt my arm, got 3rd

degrees on my leg. My dad saw the benthandlebar later and asked if I rode it and Isaid, Nooooo? Then he knew.

all time was Royce Gracie and KenShamrock, because Royce had to beextremely conscientious of the fact thatif Ken whacked him, Royce would be introuble. So it wasnt the most excitingmatch for thirty-something minutes.

    A NEW SPORTA NEW ATHLETE

The rules and time limits give you agood basis from which to set up atraining rhythm. Because of this, wenow have a true mixed martial artsathlete, as opposed to a karate athleteor a boxing athlete doing no-holds-barred and hes getting a lot of respect.

BUT IS IT STILL TRUE COMBAT?

A lot of people say, Oh, its not asreal, but actually it is. Street fights areover very quickly. No fights last thirtyminutes. If Im in a wrestling match witha guy that long, my friends are going to

come up and kick the guy in the heador his friends are going to come up andkick me in the head. So its not realisticto say that its a real street situation, because its not.

    ZUFFA TO THE RESCUE

Mezger was involved in one of theplanning meetings for UFC 3 becausethey wanted him to fight in UFC 4.

Im a pretty smart bear, so theyasked me to come in and listen to whatwas going on. I quickly realized theoriginal group knew nothing about thefight business. They were completely

uneducated about the fact that it wasntgoing to last. The harder they dug in thesand about no rules, the quicker theirform of UFC was going to die. And itdid. Then Zuffa and Dana White gottogether, put rules in and got itsanctioned by the boxing commission inVegas. This was a huge deal for thegrowth of the sport because Vegas setsstandards for the fight business andthats what really pushed it into a muchmore legitimate light.

In the third round of the Feb-ruary 14th Bellator MMA eventthis year in North Carolina withhis opponent trying to catch hisbreath, gasping for air JohnnyBuck Nasty started grinning. Hethought, Tis is awesome. Johnnyknew his intensity didnt waverone bit during the bout while hisopponent was obviously fatigued.Johnny won his match in the thirdround by a unanimous decision, thanks in part, to a new supple-

ment that claims to give fightersan edge.Te supplement Johnny has

been using is EPO-BOOS - anall-natural sports supplementdeveloped by U.S. based Biomedi-cal Research Laboratories. EPO isa hormone that is naturally pro-duced in the body and primarilyfunctions to stimulate the produc-tion of new red blood cells.

Increasing the amount of redblood cells increases the oxygencarrying capacity of the blood to

deliver more oxygen to exercis-ing muscles. Te extra oxygensignificantly increases the musclesenergy production and can

therefore help to improve athleticperformance output ability; higherintensity and greater endurance.

raditional techniques forboosting RBC levels includesynthetic drugs and blood doping.Tese practices are both danger-ous and banned by organizedsports associations. Te makers ofEPO-BOOS claim that their pat-ent-pending formula is all-naturaland is clinically shown to safelyincrease erythropoietin levels,

resulting in greater strength andendurance.Johnny said, On February 14, I

never got tired. I was fired up thewhole time. And when Im train-ing, were doing 8-10-12 minuterounds and my intensity hangs inthere. Te level of intensity Ivebeen putting out compared to theother guys I train with they cantkeep up.

A short while ago in trainingcamp, I was going faster than allmy training partners. Tey ran

out of partners for me. I knowits because my training includesEPO- BOOS. I refuse to trainwithout it.

    What makes this formula different

    from other energy/performance

    supplements?

Te patent-pending EPO-BOOS formula contains a highlyconcentrated form of Echinaceapurpurea to increase EPO levels, red cell nutrients and a blend of

iron rich natural substances toincrease red blood cell produc-tion, plus additional ingredientsfor maximum endurance output, including increased blood ow.

Clinical studies appear tovalidate the EPO-BOOSformulas effectiveness. A 28-daydouble-blind placebo-controlledclinical trial, performed by Dr.Whitehead from the Departmentof Health and Human Performanceat Northwestern State University, showed that the active ingredient

in EPO-BOOS increased EPOproduction by over 90% comparedto the group taking the placebo.1Te supplement group also showeddramatic improvements in athleticperformance (as measured by VO-2max and running economy).

Johnny Buck said, Its anamazing product. If youre inMMA or other high-performancesports, Id definitely give it a shot.EPO-BOOS is the only productIve used where I can noticeablytell when Im training with it or

without it. My coach cant wearme out during cardio. In fact mycardios so good, he puts me on

oxygen-deprivation training torestrict the ow of oxygen. Yes, Iget tired, but my recovery betweenrounds is phenomenal. Imagineyourself feeling this way when youtrain or fight.

Any athlete can use EPO-BOOS without a prescriptionand without changing their diet

or exercise regimen. Te companyoffers an unparalleled guarantee.Athletes can use the product for afull 90 days and if not completelysatisfied, send back whatever prod-uct is remaining - even an emptybottle - and get a no questionsasked refund.

A company spokesman con-firmed a special offer: if you orderthis month, youll receive FreeEnrollment into the companysElite Athlete Club where youllqualify to receive a full 25%discount on all your bottles ofEPO-BOOS. And so you dontgo a day without EPO-BOOSin your system - increasing yourendurance, youll automatically re-ceive a fresh bottle every 30-days.Tere are no minimum amountsof bottles to buy and you cancancel at any time. MIND

GAMESSilva Messes With Your Head ButLuckily Weidman Has a Degree ToCope With ThatBy Jatinder Dhoot

THE MIND GAMES OF ANDERSON SILVA

Nobody likes being made fun of.Anderson Silva is a highly gifted athlete, technician and artist in the

cage but his mental game is also top notch. He exudes a confidencedesigned to break his opponents frame of mind. And it usually works.

Until now.All fighters have doubts and insecurities. Silva is a master of

tapping into those weaknesses during a fight and forcing them to thesurface. However, Chris Weidman has a degree in Psychology andknew this going in to their last fight. He was prepared to deal with themind tricks of the The Spider.

Well take a look of three tactics Anderson uses to draw fightersinto his tangled web and what Weidman did in order to avoid gettingsucked into that game.

    And come out on top.

Silva, weaving his web, will pull

you in and make you attack but

    hes ready for you.

    STARING YOU DOWN

Anderson Silvas highlight reel is scaryenough, but when youre staring into hiseyes at a pre-fight press conference orweigh-ins, thats when the terror hitshome. Silva can mentally defeat hisopponents even before they step into theOctagon by getting into their heads instare-downs leading up to the fight.

Weidman stayed strong during theseand even when Anderson pushed forwardand practically kissed him during theirweigh-in face-off, Weidman didnt let thatphase him. He laughed it off and didntfreak out. Point Weidman. The scalesbegan to tip towards him.

    MAKING YOU PLAY HIS GAME

When somebodys in a cage trying tokick your ass andmocking you with allkinds of different tactics, no matter howmentally calm you are, it does tap intosomething deep inside you. And it can bereally irritating.

Anderson Silva is great at that very

thing. How does he get his opponentsminds discombobulated? By using a widearray of tactics, like: putting his handsdown; laughing if you try and hit him;dodging your punches in a haughtymanner; even pretending that you rockedhim with a punch when you didnt.

All this is to try and suck you into hisworld and get you to trade with him. Silvais great at many things in the cage, buthes a master a counter-punching. Whenfighters come at him with strikes, he isable to counter them and knock them out. Therefore Silva tries to irritate opponentsby mocking them and induce them to

push forward with strikes so he can knockthem out.

What Chris Weidman did well in hisfight with Silva was that he stayedfocused and got a punch in and thenmoved out of the way. He didnt try andget into a brawl with Silva, but took his

By the end of the fight Weidman hadhad enough he didget angry andcharge forward with a four-shotcombination. However Weidman was ableto make it count and got the big KO.

Overall, Weidman didnt fall into Silvastrap and was able to keep calmthroughout. Well about as best as hecould, which is still saying a lot.

    MAKING YOU FEEL INFERIOR

Asserting superiority goes hand in handwith showboating.

Silva does a great job of makingfighters feel like they dont belong in thesame cage as him. Forrest Griffin noted incomedic fashion that when he foughtSilva he threw punches at him and theywere dodged easily, then Silva gave him alook like, Did you really think you weregoing to hit me with that?

When your opponent easily avoids yourstrikes with his hands down and thengives you a look like youre an amateur, suddenly that starts to mess with yourhead.

That seed of doubt germinatesextremely quickly. The same thing happened in Silvas

fight with Stephan Bonnar: Silvaintroduced a new mental trick where hetaunted Bonnar to go off and hit him inthe face while he stood with his headresting on the post along the top of thecage. All of a sudden you start to feel a bithumiliated, awkward and uncomfortable and thats when things begin to fall apart.

Fortunately for Weidman, he reviewedthis tape before fighting Silva and he hadthe insight to realize what Silva was doingand how to combat it. So when Silva

started putting his hands on his hips andlet Weidman punch him, Weidman did notpanic. His perception of the situation was,You can stand there and let me hit you, thats great, Im scoring points andwinning the fight. He used it to hisadvantage.

Weidmans Psych degree and pre-fightresearch allowed him to ultimately neverget tangled up in The Spiders web ofintrigue and realize his dream ofbecoming the UFC middleweightchampion.

Chris Weidman predicted his fatehe said before his first fight withAnderson Silva that he was going to win

and have to rematch Silva right away.He was correct.

Although he didnt even think he wasgoing to win via KO, he pulled off a

    classic moment in MMA history.

What about fight number two? Will hepull it off again? Lets analyze it:

STRIKINGWeidmans striking is really good. Not

because he got he KO, but he was able

to land strikes prior to that as well in

the fight against Silva. His left hook wasa good weapon and Weidman also

landed a nice big right in the fight.

He avoided a lot of the hits from Silvain terms of head kicks and also did a

nice job of dropping his hands and

avoiding jabs by Silva, trying to match

Silvas mind games. However, all thatbeing said, Silva is the better striker of

the two, and should be able to out-strike

Weidman in the second fight, should hedecide to return fire and not just stand

there and let Weidman attack without

countering. If Silva decides to take a more serious

striking approach, he should land more

hits than Weidman. Silvas travelling to

Thailand to hone his muay Thai, so youknow The Spider is serious.

    Edge: SILVA

BJJWeidman has better BJJ, and now has

the confidence to realize he can stand

toe to toe with Silva and not have adesperate attitude towards getting it to

the floor. He can relax a bit more on hisfeet, without trying to get Silva

    down ASAP.

If it goes to the ground, he still has thetools to finish the fight, although Silva

did well in avoiding the leg attacks of

Weidman and got back up to his feet.

    Edge:WEIDMAN

down fast and fluidly with a

great takedown. In the second roundSilva did amazingly well in keeping the

fight on his feet. I think a similar thing

will happen in fight two: Weidman gets a

takedown in the first, but in the followingrounds itll be harder to score.

    Edge:WEIDMAN

    CONFIDENCEWeidman definitely displayed

confidence in fight one, but now itsthrough the roof. He knocked out the

most dangerous striker in MMA and beat

him in the area where he was supposed

to get creamed in. He now knows he cantap him out and knock him out.

Lightning might not strike twice, but itsa huge confidence booster to KO alegend. Silva, however, is a master of

confidence and although he was knocked

out, he believes in himself so much that it

wont matter. At least in his head.

    Edge: EVEN

CARDIONeither fighter will get tired because

theyre well-trained and their minds are

too strong to fade. Both of these men putin long hours training, sparring and

honing their skills and the stakes are

higher in this rematch, so neither side

    will gas out.

    Edge: EVEN

OUTCOMEI see a similar fight as the first one in

round one and two, except not as much

clowning from Silva and no KO byWeidman.

I think Silva settles down with his

striking and picks apart Weidman and

goes in for a finish in the second round. It wont be easy, but I think Silva will pick

up one or two deadly moves from

Thailand, perfect them, and use them inthe fight to win via KO.

Although this is a similar predication I

had for the first fight and I was

completely wrong but now I stand bythe pick in what is to surely be a very

    even and interesting fight.

The UFC.In 1993, the entire world turned its eyes toward the

    TIMELINE 1993-2013

    1993-1998

GRACIE REIGNEarly UFC shows were all about Royce Gracie. How could this

thin, small fighter take on such massive competitors with relativeease? It was a superb endorsement for the effectiveness ofBrazilian jiu-jitsu. Gracie won the first and second UFCtournaments, and then went on to win the fourth in Dec. 1994.

Remember the UFC tagline There are no rules! from theearly 1990s? There were limited rules that banned eye-

gouging and biting but amazingly allowed hair pulling, hits tothe groin, head-butting and fish-hooking.

    TO THE MAT

In 1996, the effectiveness of wrestling emerged with MarkColeman bursting onto the scene, running through his firstsix opponents and winning UFC 10 and UFC 11, culminatingwith a submission win over Dan Severn.

SHAMROCK DOMINATESA name still known to many, Frank Shamrock emerged as the

organizations biggest star, dominating the late 90s by beatinghis opponents into submission with his signature punches.

MORE EYEBALLSThis five-year period was pivotal in terms of taking the

sport mainstream. The Ultimate Fighterpremiered on SpikeTV and now the masses were learning about the sport ofmixed martial arts.

The two big fighters on the scene were Chuck Liddell andRandy Couture. Liddell was the reigning king of 205 and the

face of the UFC, while Randy Couture was light-heavyweightchampion, retiring after losing the crown, staging a comebackin dramatic fashion in March 2007, by defeating Tim Sylviaat the tender age of 43.

EXPANDINGIn addition to the UFC landing on television, the

organization purchased Pride FC in March 2007, dissolving itinto the UFC. Most of the great stars from the famedJapanese league were absorbed into the UFC and their questfor market domination reached another milestone.

5 Minuteswith Rorion GracieGracie.A name long associated with the UFC and its first crowned champion. We were fortunate enough to ask Rorion Gracie, a legend in his own right, a fewquestions about the UFCs 20th Anniversary. And proving the point that a good martial artist is effective, swift and to the point, hekept his answers just like that:

Ultimate MMA: Along with Art Davie, you created theUFC. Its now been 20 years since you did that. When youlook in retrospect, what comes to mind?Rorion Gracie: The week preceding the first UFC was themost intense and most rewarding of my life. First, because Iknew the martial arts community was going to be shocked bythe experience as they would see something they neverdreamed of, and secondly, I was able to pay homage to theold man for all he had done!

UMMA: Would you do anything differently now?RG: Absolutely not!

UMMA: What was the best part of those UFCs?RG: They were educational in nature, they served thepurpose of enlightening the masses to what worked and whatdidnt.

UMMA: What was the most difficult?RG: The anticipation and wait for the first fight.

UMMA: What was the most enjoyable?RG: Introducing my father as the First Ultimate Fighter.

UMMA: What did Royce and your art reveal to the world?RG: Gracie jiu-jitsu is beyond any shadow of a doubt the most effective martial arton the planet. It enables you to be comfortable even under the most stressful

situations imaginable, which is a metaphor on how one should live in order to findpeace in ones life.

UMMA: What are your thoughts on it being 20 years old?RG: I am very proud with the way it keeps on growing.

UMMA: How far has Gracie Jiu-Jitsu come since 1993 and UFC I?RG: It took over the world as I planned!

UMMA: Did you still watch it today? If so, what are your thoughts?RG: I do not watch it.

UMMA: Anything else come to mind?RG: I came to the realization that fighting was just a part of the big picture. Nowthat I have accomplished my goal of sharing jiu-jitsu with the world, I have turned myattention to sharing the Gracie Diet which I believe to be even more important than

    jiu-jitsu itself. Be healthy!

    REVIEW

Truth be told, I was super hyped to tryout this gi and when I opened the package the firstthing that stood out was the color. I am not a hugefan of blue gis, but this shade is like a deep oceanblue, meaning it is nice in a manly type of way.

I am 62 and 225+ pounds and am always stuckbetween ordering an A4 or A5, so I tend to side with an A4 as I am losing body fat andgaining lean muscle after every roll. I personally do not like gis that are too tight or thatare way too loose. After I washed it in cold water and hung it to dry, I tried it on withmuch anticipation.

The gi top/jacket has a perfect fit, from the length of the arms to the length of the topitself. I especially liked the difficulty my drill partners were having trying to get their gripson my collar. Also when defending the spider guard, I was able to pummel in without thegi sleeves being pulled damn near off my body.

One of my biggest issues with gi pants is that I have to pull the drawstrings and retie

them after each roll. That was not an issue with these pants, as they held up nicely.

    TIPS

5 Mistakes Students MakeAvoid These Common Errors on the Path to Excellence

    Story and Photos by Tinguinha

    THE USE OF EXCESSIVE STRENGTH

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a technical martial artbased purely on leverage rather than power.Having the right position and grips will always

make you the stronger one in the match inspite of your size.It is very common, especially for beginning

students, to try to use excessive power duringtraining sessions. They think this will resolvetheir problems or overcome obstacles theymay have trying to gain the upper hand. Everytime you have to use too much power, its asign that you are missing something in yourtechnique.

    TOO MUCH EGO

The reason why students quit BJJ is often re-lated to ego. When you train BJJ, you have toput your ego to the side. You are gonna getsubmitted. You are gonna get controlled. You

will have good days. You will have bad days. The road from white belt to black belt is not aneasy one, but that is what makes this martialart fun and challenging. Its all part of the learn-ing process, so get over getting submitted onthe mat. Have fun and go train. Enjoy the jour-ney.

    AVOIDING YOUR WEAKNESSES

Everybody will have both strong aspects andweaknesses in their BJJ game. So when itcomes to training time, they often try to stay intheir comfort zone. If you want to keep improv-ing, you will want to work on your weaknesses.Go ahead and put yourself in those uncomfort-

able positions and try to develop those partsof your game, rather than avoiding them and

not learning. Thats the only way youre gonnafix your problem areas and push your game tothe next level.

STOPPING TRAINING WHEN TIREDThere is a stage you have to get to in order tounderstand the BJJ flow: that place where yourmind and your body are totally connected dur-ing training. It is all about feeling and reacting,so for you to get to that level of understandingof not using power you need to get tired first.

For a lot of people, when they start gettingtired, their first reaction is to take a break sothey can recover and get fresh again. That is amistakeyou need to keep training when youare tired. That way, you get the connection ofmoving with pure technique and getting yourmind and your body as one so you can react tothose situations without spending unnecessaryenergy.

    TRYING TO LEARN FANCY TECH-

    NIQUES

BJJ is a very complex martial art. Its quite com-mon for students to try to learn the fancy tech-niques first and stay away from the basics. Ifyou dont have a solid foundation, youre gonnahave serious problems in your game. Its ex-tremely important to master the fundamentalsfirst before you try to learn anything else.

Dont worry... youll get to the fancy stuff intime.

Desiree Pagliuso also urges parents toenroll their children in mixed martial arts,as she did with al l three of her children:Dominic plus Malia, age 6, and evenKiana, age 4.

For the parents interested in gettingtheir kids into a sport, you will learn somuch more from martial arts than inanything else and will be able to take thatblack belt as a trophy for the rest of your

life, she explains. For Dominic, jiu-jitsu means the world

to him, and having the support of hisfamily, sponsors and instructors behindhim has helped him to overcome hurdleswith Aspergers and has shaped him intothe champion he is.

I am so blessed that Moya has givenme a few gis and that I am able to trainfour times a week. The people who inspireme the most are my professor and my dadbecause both have helped me at mytournaments and help challenge me in mytraining, Dominic sayswho now servesas an inspiration to us all.

Confidence, respect and discipline aresuch important keys you learn in martialarts. For kids, especially nowadays, theyneed to learn how to defend themselvesand have the confidence to do so, shesays.

Integrating the discipline of the sporthas positive results in Dominics life. Hisfamily and instructors have noticed hugechanges in his behavior.

Through the dojo, Dominic has learned

to interact with children way better. Hehas learned through his training to be

more patient and controlled. He has alsolearned how to control his anxiety.

    COMPETING

Moya Brand is the first to sponsor childathletes and they have been on boardwith Dominic since the start of his careerin competition.

Being a parent myself, I am personallyaware of the many benefits that BJJ has toofferincluding self-confidence,sportsmanship and discipline, to name afew. Jiu-jitsu also has a huge impact onadults and children with physical andmental disabilities, says Jesse Gonzalez, owner of Moya Brand.

Dominic has increased his self-confidence and a has a never-give-upattitude.

That is the best thing aboutsponsoring Dom, because those are skillsthat he will carry with him as he growsand becomes a young man. Hesconstantly pushing himself not only on themat, but off the mat as well, Gonzalezexplains.

    BJJ VS. BULLIES

According to Gonzalez, BJJ is not just askillbut a life skill.

We live in a society where bullying hasbecome a major obstacle in the schoolsystems. By learning BJJ, we empowerour children with the necessary tools toconfront bullying. BJJ does not just teachchildren how to defend themselves, it alsoteaches them the discipline in knowing

when to apply this life skill, Gonzalezsays.

Dana White said it. But is it true?Mixing fighting systems together has undoubtedly been going on since ancient times and M MA-style events have been seen in Brazil for

nearly a hundred years. So declaring anyone to be the Father of MMA is probably a bit presumptuous. But Lee was certainly a trailblazer in that he de-emphasized rigid styles and systems and focused on using only what works, borrowing

from many martial arts in the process. For many at the time, this was a revolutionary idea and it changed the way a lot of traditional stylists thought about fighting. While he may not be the father of mixed martial arts, the reverberations from Bruce Lees impact are certainly felt in the sport to this day.

Tom Muzila is an ex-ArmyGreen Beret and 5th

    Degree black belt in

    karate.

    The Instructor: Tom Muzila

    His Art: Shotokan Karate

His Rank: 5th Degree Black Belt

    Decades in Training: 5

    Website: www.tommuzila.com

Tom Muzila knows a thing or two about combat. An ex-Army Green

Beret, he has worked in the bodyguarding industry for more than 30 years,

having protected clients like Bruce Willis and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Muzila also happens to be a fifth degree black belt in Shotokan Karate.

Getting into a number of brawls in his younger years, Muzila pursued

martial arts to become a stronger, tougher, better fighter. After

encountering a variety of uninspiring schools that seemed to lack focus

and intensity, he found his way to a Shotokan Karate of America (SKA) dojo

in downtown Long Beach, Calif. The experience was life changing.

I could hear this yelling and screaming, he says as he approached the

dojo. And when I walked in, guys were being thrown over the rail andthrough the wall, and at first I thought I had walked into a bar fight. The

hair on the back of my neck stood up. The energy was so powerful.

He was sold. Hes been involved with karate ever since. Today he

realizes that the winds have changed in the martial arts community.

More and more people are interested in MMA, he says. A lot of

people are being attracted to it, which is taking away from traditional

    karate.

He goes on to say that some people feel that MMA is better than any

    other style of fighting.

It depends on who you are, your abilities and who your teacher is and

    how he came up.

He believes the old adage is true: Its the stylist, not the style.

If you have a really good instructor who tries to make everythingrealistic and effective, it doesnt really matter what style it is.

To Muzila, guys like Machida, John Makdessi and Ryan Jimmoall of

whom have strong karate backgroundsare proof that in the hands of

someone who understands the art, it can be an effective tool for fighting.

I love it! he says of the recent success of fighters with traditional

backgrounds. I think its great. It proves, you know, that what [SKA

founder] Mr. Ohshima has been teaching and what Ive been practicing

    works. Its effective.

And ironically, because of this success, MMA is now starting to

motivate students to seek out traditional martial arts.

Weve been getting more people back with more faith in traditional

karate, says Muzila. They can tell that traditional karate has some real

    positive benefits.

    5. JOHN MAKDESSIWith a background in both Shotokan karate andtaekwondo, Makdessi brings a unique style to thecage. Watch out for his lead-leg kicks and spinningtechniques.

    4. DONG HYUN KIMThere is perhaps no better representative for judo inMMA than the Stun Gun, who holds a 4th degreeblack belt in the art. His grappling skills have reapedhim many wins inside the UFC.

    3. CUNG LEOkay, this one might be cheating a little, but Cung Lessanshou fighting style is derived directly fromtraditional Chinese kung fu, making Le the No. 1proponent for kung fu in the uppermost level of MMA.

    2. GEORGES ST-PIERREMany casual fans probably dont associate the fightercommonly known as GSP with traditional martial arts, but before he was an MMA combatant, St-Pierre was afierce competitor in Kyokushin karate. This backgroundcan still be seen reflected in his standup style.

    1. LYOTO MACHIDAThere is no doubt that former UFC light heavyweightchampion Lyoto Machida is the most vocal and obvioustraditional stylist on todays MMA landscape. Trainingin Shotokan karate under his fathers tutelage vi rtuallysince birth and employing a fighting style that is veryreminiscent of Shotokan tournament competition, he isproof that in the hands of a capable fighter traditionalstyles can be very effective.

Judo has seen a lot of success in MMA.Of all the traditional Asian arts, it is the one that got the first strong foothold in the

sport, with fighters like Karo Parysian, Dong Hyun Kim and UFC womensbantamweight champion Ronda Rousey all adept at throwing people inside the cage.

One man who has watched this situation develop throughout the years is two-timeOlympic bronze medalist, and 2012 U.S. Olympic judo team coach, Jimmy Pedro. Hehas also welcomed MMA fighters into his school.

Both Rousey and Bellator lightweight Rick Hawn have walked through the doors ofPedros Judo Center for help in improving their game.

Theres no question that MMA has benefited from competitive judokas, who havelittle means beyond teaching to make a living using their art. But has it worked in theother direction? Not really, says Pedro.

Honestly, I dont think MMA has helped judo in any way, he says. There are nota lot of judo places in the USA for people who truly want to learn judo for MMA.Therefore, other arts like jiu-jitsu, muay Thai and boxing have benefitted more fromMMA than judo because they offer classes that are geared toward MMA, whereasjudo classes are geared toward training athletes for the Olympic sport of judo.

Furthermore, the International Judo Federation tends to frown upon MMA and itscompetitors, says Pedro, claiming that they often dont embrace the deeper principlesof judo such as fair play, respect and friendship.

MMA is a terrific sport, he says, but in the end it is a business, so it must notonly make money but also appeal to the masses. Therefore, there is a lot of trashtalking, good vs. evil and antics by athletes that are barbaric or crass. Personally, I ama fan of the classy MMA fighter like a Georges St-Pierre or Jon Jones, who choose todo their talking through their fighting.

there who kick well, Pace continues. In his opinion, instead of being a useless art in MMA or other combat

sports, it is the exact opposite: It is an under-utilized art. Within the fourwalls of his dojang(martial arts academy) these days he is training a localMMA competitor in taekwondo to help him with his kicks.

Pace remarks that hed love to see an Olympically-trained taekwondoplayer round out his skills and enter MMA at the highest levels to prove justhow useful the arts skills can be. In the meantime, he encourages those

interested in MMA today to give taekwondo a deeper look and recognize thesubstance beneath the style.

Im an MMA guy, says Will Pace. But he doesnt doMMA. Hes not an MMA instructor or a fighter. And he

never has been. So what does he mean when he says hes an MMA guy?

Attitude, he clarifies. As a fourth degree black belt in Olympic-style taekwondo, and the owner

of Pace Academy Taekwondo in Salt Lake City, hes had a lot of studentscome through his doors. And one thing he always stresses is attitude.

When I train my kids to compete, I tell them all the time that I wantthem to fight like an MMA fighter, he says. A lot of what we say here is wedont spar, we fight. I want them to have a fight mentality as opposed to agetting-a-point mentality.

It seems this emphasis on attitude and mindset has paid off. Hes hadmany students go on to have successful competition careers, including statechampions, multiple national champions and two U.S. Open winners. He alsohas one student who is a member of the U.S. Collegiate Team.

Pace got involved with taekwondo as many people haveas a kid wantingto learn martial arts. But he confesses that as an adult, it was MMA that

really captured his interest.I never really wanted to train in taekwondo, he says. Competitively, Iwas really more attracted to MMA. I always have been. But as I got intotaekwondo more, I really found a passion and a love for it, for the science ofit. I love the technicality of it.

Whether justified or not, taekwondo has become something of alaughingstock among certain segments of the combat sports world, withcomments often being made about how its nothing more than a game of foottag with little practical value outside of its very specific rule set.

But Pace feels that this viewpoint is shortsighted and betrays a lack ofunderstanding of the art.

The majority of people who are making that call dont really understandOlympic-style taekwondo, he says. Its really dynamic, there are knockout
