*** ANNUAL ROSTER ISSUE – DO NOT TOSS ***

WE NEED TO ACT DIFFERENTLY NOW … Larry Hunter, 2017 – 2018 Utah – Idaho District Governor

This is the 103rd year of Kiwanis. It’s message of “Kids Needs Kiwanis” rings clear

throughout the countries in which it operates. There are tens of thousands of active

dedicated Kiwanis in this country and dozens of others. However, we are faced with

sobering membership statistics: Only one year in the past 25 has Kiwanis gained

membership. Kiwanis membership worldwide is at its lowest level since 1953. Here in the

Utah-Idaho District for the 2016-2017 Kiwanis year, we have fallen short of our goals for

membership growth and new clubs. Our modest goal of two new clubs was not obtained.

In fact, we lost a club. Our membership is down (not by as many as other districts some

would say, as if that were an accomplishment).

So, what do we do? Throw our hands in the air in despair; throw in the towel in defeat;

throw up in disgust? No, No and No. But neither do we sit and do nothing, accept the

status quo and watch members and clubs disappear around the U.S.

If Kiwanis is going to survive, let alone thrive, we need to act differently than we have in

the past. For some of us, merely attending our meetings, and paying our dues is as much

contribution as we can make. However, for many, if not most of us, that will not be

sufficient this year and into the future. We need to increase our efforts, participate in

service, invite friends, neighbors, colleagues and business associates to attend a meeting, It

is not that hard. Not only do kids need Kiwanis, but our communities need service

organizations. The government, our churches and our families cannot do everything that is

needed. This is a noble work – Rise Up and Build. This year can be your best ever in

Kiwanis.

INTRODUCTION AND THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT

Since I wasn’t given the opportunity to speak at the Richfield Convention, I wanted to

thank everyone for their support in writing. I’m excited about being Governor Elect and for

the opportunity to work with Governor Larry Hunter and immediate Past Governor Jim

Vaughan.

After losing a dear friend, Marvin Chamberlin, and now my oldest brother who passed

away a few weeks ago, I have reflected on life. In doing so I came upon a short paragraph

I’d like to share with you.

“I used to own a big Buick station wagon that had a 375-horsepower engine. It really

zipped over the mountain passes, never losing power. Then I reached a point where I

realized I didn’t need that kind of power and I bought a Volkswagen camper. We crept over

the mountains and I saw so much more.”(Anne Wilson Schaef).

Other than making me chuckle what does this have to do with Kiwanis? Time is a valuable

commodity in our society and donating money for a good cause is a wonderful and

important way of providing service to children. Taking the time to actually read to a child,

help a young adult with math, or assist with food or games at a carnival, are also ways of

providing service for the children but having that one-on-one time also fulfills and enriches

our own lives.

We all joined Kiwanis for various reasons but let us never forget, “Kids need Kiwanis”,

they need us and we need them. No matter how we chose to serve let’s never lose sight of

the Children.

Thank You again for this opportunity to serve, Gov. Elect Barbara Mullins.

UTAH – IDAHO DISTRICT

The Utah District was organized March 24, 1919, at Salt

Lake City. Salt Lake City appointed Alexander

Eberhardt to act as governor. The Executive Committee of

the International Board added Idaho to the territory of the

district on November 27, 1920.

The Utah-Idaho District came into existence as of

December 16 of the same year. By mutual agreement,

ratified by the International Board, the panhandle of Idaho

consisting of 10 counties north of the Salmon River was

added to the Pacific Northwest District in July of 1925. The

Utah-Idaho District’s first convention was in Salt Lake City

on December 16, 1920.

At that session, Herbert Van Damn, Jr. was elected governor

at a convention in his home city. The first club in the district

was Salt Lake City, completed October 10, 1918. The second

club was Pocatello, Idaho, on August 5, 1920, and the third

club was Boise, Idaho on August 10, 1920.

THE OBJECTS OF KIWANIS

The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were

approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention

in Denver, Colorado. Through the succeeding decades, they

have remained unchanged.

Object 1 - To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather

than to the material values of life.

Object 2 - To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule

in all human relationships.

Object 3 - To promote the adoption and the application of

higher social, business, and professional standards.

Object 4 - To develop, by precept and example, a more

intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

Object 5 - To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical

means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic

service, and to build better communities.

Object 6 - To cooperate in creating and maintaining that

sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible

the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and

goodwill

“…I HAVE NOT COME TO BE SERVED,

BUT TO SERVE…”

Those words were spoken and recorded almost 2000 years

ago, but are even more pertinent today. It goes without

saying: one of the main objects for any service organization is

to serve their communities. As Kiwanians, our focus is on the

youth of the world. Drugs, Crime, Absent Fathers, Hunger

and Poverty are just a few of the problems facing our youth,

and Kiwanis can offer Hope to those children facing this

horrible scourge against society.

I am so proud of how our fellow Americans jumped into

action during Hurricane Harvey, using their own property and

funds to comfort our neighbors.

The first responders with initially no organization, other than

world of mouth, displayed: The Good Old American Can Do

Spirit! The Cajun Navy arrive in Texas, as the winds were

still swirling, with their own homes in Louisiana in peril to aid

in water rescues.

What heroes we have in our midst! The World took notice

too, asking our State Department how they could help with

money or supplies. If all these folks are not Kiwanians, they

should be!

Fortunately, we do not face national disasters often, but the

youth or our communities are within our local clubs’ realm

every day. Please become even more involved in your club

activities, and aspire to greater levels of involvement.

Kiwanis appreciates your ideas and inputs, a willingness to

serve, and welcomes your leadership qualities. There is always

a need for those willing to step up in the organization – Please

continue to serve your Kiwanis District, and the Youth of the

World.

In Kiwanis Service,

Captain Jim Vaughan, Immediate Past Governor

HELLO FELLOW UTAH-IDAHO KIWANIANS!!

We all had a great time in Richfield Utah at the convention

this year!! 45 were in attendance. New friendships were

formed. Knowledge was shared. And we had a great time

overall. Thanks so much Past Governor Wesley Sine and the

staff at the Days Inn. You were amazing hosts and worked

really hard to make sure we were well taken care of at every

meal, every session and especially during the banquet. And,

that band at the park…wow! Super cool and fun. I’d like to

have them at all of our events!!

I’m pretty sure everyone had a really great time! Wish you all

could have been there.

I know that attending these conventions can often interfere

with family vacations and school schedules, as well as just the

fact that most of us are truly busy.

So, we are doing our best to set the date for next year as early

as possible. The next annual convention will be held August 9

- 11, 2018 in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Can you? Will You? Plan it?

We’d love to see more of us at convention to share ideas,

information and build camaraderie!

Looking forward to seeing all of you very soon…

Best to all of you in this new Kiwanis year,

Kelly Ryan, District Secretary

2017 – 2018 Utah – Idaho District Officers and Lt. Governors

RICHFIELD KIWANIS 333 North Main Street

Richfield, Utah 84701

Telephone 435 896 6476

HI fellow Kiwanians,

We want to thank you for honoring us with your convention in Richfield its’ and beautiful National Parks of which it is the gateway. The

special tour held Thursday to the Fremont Indian Museum and its many Petroglyphs lead by Richfield Kiwanis Secretary Kathie Gleave was

memorable. This is a unique experience was discovered during the building of I-70 Freeway. The tour on Friday, of Fish Lake with its natural

beauty was canceled due to a tight training schedule. Kathie Gleave, the Secretary of the Richfield Kiwanis Club was everywhere during the

convention making it run smoothly from the Hotel’s side.

On Thursday at noon, the Richfield Club held its weekly meeting to which everyone was invited by the Club. The special speaker was

Mayor Dave Ogden who gave us a special glance at the history of the region. He is truly and expert in this area.

It was a great Convention. The weather was delightful and the nights refreshingly cool. It was fun to meet around the pool with our fellow

Kiwanians. The barbeque at the Park right across the street from the Hotel was spectacular and the entertainment by the Dirty Boots truly

professional.

The Gift Shop featured authentic Indian Jewelry, handmade Stone Jewelry, ceramics, paintings all made by local artists of which the

Kiwanians purchased liberally.

The banquet was truly special featuring a T Bone Steak and all the amenities. Tabernacle Choir Member Melou Cline and her children

Days of 47 Queen Meran, Ariel, and Isaac gave a fantastic musical production. Melou’s husband Russ Cline is a member of the Bonneville Club.

Everyone who attended the Convention thought this was one of the best Conventions they had attended.

It was great to meet Governor Larry Hunter. He will truly be a great Governor. Thank-you, Jim Vaughn for a great job. Thank-you,

District Secretary Kelly Ryan for your fine work at the Convention. It was well organized thanks to your diligent work.

SEE YOU IN AUGUST 2018 at the next UTAH IDAHO KIWANIS CONVENTION which will be held in Idaho. THIS WILL BE A

GREAT CONVENTION. MAKE IT A TIME TO BRING THE FAMILY TO ENJOY THE KIWANIS MESSAGE.

It's delightful to have ambitions. I'm so glad I have such a lot. And there never seems to be any end to them—that's the best of

The number of books will grow continually, and one can predict that a time will

come when it will be almost as difficult to learn anything from books as from the

direct study of the whole universe. It will be almost as convenient to search for some

bit of truth concealed in nature as it will be to find it hidden away in an immense

multitude of bound volumes.

DEAN LEE HADLOCK April 10, 1940 ~ August 17, 2017

Dean Lee Hadlock, of

North Ogden, passed away

at home on August 17,

2017, after a battle with

idiopathic pulmonary

fibrosis (IPF).

Dean was born on April 10,

1940, to LeRoy and Ethel

Larson Hadlock in Ogden,

Utah. He was an Ogden

High graduate and attended

Weber State College. He

loved his country and

served in the United States

Air Force. After military

service, he worked at the

Defense Depot Ogden and Hill Air Force Base. He treasured

his associations and was honored to serve in many leadership

positions with both the American Legion and Kiwanis

International.

Dean married Myrtle Jeppsen on June 20, 1977, and with

that marriage gained four children whom he loved. He was

an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-

day Saints. He served two missions with his wife in the

Jamaica Kingston and Puerto Rico San Juan Missions.

Dean is survived by his wife; four children: Denise Allen of

North Salt Lake; Cary N. (Chelli) Allen of Clinton; Bradley

J. (Cheryl) Allen of Harrisville and Vicki (Eric) Clark of

Harrisville; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Karleen Bechtel; and niece,

Kara Bechtel, both of South Jordan. He was preceded in

death by his parents; stepfather, George Noe; and one

granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers donations to LDS Humanitarian Fund are

suggested.

Kids are curious, lovable and hilarious. They are also wild,

impatient and vulnerable. Kiwanis is looking out for kids in

every corner of the globe with over 600,000 volunteers who

CARTER E. JONES, JR.

1943 – 2017

Carter Evan Jones, Jr., son

of Carter Evan Jones, Sr.

and Betty Platt Jones,

passed away on Thursday,

September 14th, one year

after being diagnosed with

cancer. True to his faithful,

dutiful nature, Carter spent

his last year serving the

Lord and his fellow man as

a full time MLS missionary

in the S.L.C. South

Mission.

Carter was born on

February 5, 1943 in N.Y. City, where his father worked for

the FBI. He told us that his parents almost named him

FIBNY. We'll never know if it's true. Carter's fun personality

and gift for making friends served him well, first at East

High, then at the U. of U., where he completed his MBA in

Finance.

Following his mission to Australia, he found a girl who

shared his devotion to God and who loved to laugh as much

as he did. Carter and Kathleen Haight were sealed on

November 23, 1966 in the Salt Lake Temple. They left for

the East coast, where Lt. Jones served in the U.S. Navy for

three years. His career of 40 years as a financial counselor

began at Merrill Lynch in 1971. This led him to other

opportunities: Director of Branches for Boettcher & Co. in

Denver and Executive V.P. of sales and marketing for

Kemper Securities in Chicago. He returned to S.L.C. to do

what he loved most, teaching individuals how to gain

financial security.

Carter held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter-day Saints, served in three temples as an Ordinance

Worker, and completed a third mission with his wife in the

Boston Massachusetts Mission from 2012-2014.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen, his three

children: Julie (Jared) Ferguson, Dyan (Swen) Sullivan, and

Daniel Carter (Shelly) Jones; and his nine grandchildren:

Ammon, Carter, Gavin, Seth, Brynne, Aidan, Evan, Elise,

and Ian. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister

and brother-in-law, Judith & Dennis Christopherson and

many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

We can't end this synopsis of Carter's life without including

his love of sports, especially baseball. He played in the

Huntsman Senior Games for 20 years. He was also devoted

to Kiwanis, serving as Lt. Governor for 2 years. He

established a Key Club at Hamden High School in

Connecticut and sponsored the Key Club at Horizonte

School in Salt Lake, where he received the Community

Partner Award for 2017.

His was a life well lived.
