que, como murallas de agua de veinte a treinta pies de altura, destruyen todo lo que haya (propiedades y gente) en las costas.

Ha habido muchos otros, pero este fue de los más grandes, causó más muertes y destrucción… y, por eso, recibió más atención.

There have been many others, but this one was one of the biggest, caused more deaths and destruction… and, therefore, received more attention.


Preguntan muchas personas, “¿Dónde estaba Dios en todo eso? ¿Está muerto? ¿Está dormido? ¿No se preocupa? ¿Por qué lo permitió?”

Many people ask, “Where was God in all that? Is He dead? Is He asleep? Doesn’t He care? Why did He permit it?


I. ¿Cómo se explica este fenómeno? ¿Cuál es el papel de Dios en tales desastres? ¿Es culpable? ¿Qué nos dice la Biblia sobre el asunto?

I. How is this phenomenon to be explained? What is the role of God in such disasters? Is He to blame? What does the Bible say about the subject?


Es insensatez, locura cuestionar a Dios. Lea Job 38-41, cuatro capítulos en los que Dios hace preguntas al hombre que se atreva a cuestionarle.

It is foolish, senseless to question God. Read Job 38-41, four chapters in which God asks questions of the man who dares to question Him.


Son preguntas que dejan al hombre bien avergonzado y consciente de su falta de entendimiento.

They are questions that leave man very ashamed and conscious of his lack of understanding.


Pensar que si Dios vive no debe permitir el sufrimiento, que si Dios existe, la tierra debe ser una utopía, refleja la ignorancia del hombre.

To think that if God lives He should not permit suffering, that if God exists, the earth should be a utopia, reflects the ignorance of man.


A. Muchos citan Mateo 24:6, 7, dicen que estas son las señales que indican que el fin del mundo se aproxima, que Cristo muy pronto volverá.

A. Many cite Matt. 24:6, 7, say that these are the signs that indicate that the end of the world is near, that Christ will return very soon.


Pero lea el contexto. Obviamente no está hablando del fin del mundo, sino del fin del judaísmo, de Jerusalén y el templo (año 70).

But read the context. Obviously He is not talking about the end of the world, but rather of the end of Judaísm, of Jerusalem and the temple (A.D.70)


B. Algunos dicen que fue castigo de Dios. ¿Puede Dios usar los elementos naturales para castigar al hombre?

B. Some say that it was punishment from God. Can God use the natural elements to punish man?


Es muy cierto que Dios ha usado elementos naturales para castigar al hombre: agua, fuego, granizo, tormentas, etc.

It is very true that God has used natural elements to punish man: water, fire, hail, storms, etc.


El pecado contaminó la tierra de Canaán. Lev. 18:25, “y la tierra fue contaminada; y yo visité su maldad sobre ella, y la tierra vomitó sus moradores”.

Sin contaminated the land of Canaan. Lev. 18:25, “For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.”


Isa. 24:1, 3, 4, 6. Es lenguaje figurado pero basado sobre el concepto de Gén. 3:17-19, de que la tierra fue maldita por causa del pecado.

Isa. 24:1, 3, 4, 6. It is figurative language, but it’s based on the concept of Gen. 3:17-19, that the earth was cursed because of sin.


Apoc. 9:20, “los otros hombres que no fueron muertos con estas plagas, ni aun así se arrepintieron de las obras de sus manos”.

Rev. 9:20, “But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands.”


Indica que tales desastres y sufrimientos eran para castigar y que deberían producir el arrepentimiento.

Indicates that such disasters and suffering were to punish and that they should produce repentance.


Sin lugar a dudas Dios ha castigado con los elementos naturales: Diluvio, Gén. 6-9; Fuego, Sodoma y Gomorra, Gén. 19; Jonás 1:4.

Beyond doubt God has punished with the natural elements: Flood, Gen. 6-9; Fire, Sodom and Gomorrah, Gen. 19; Jonah 1:4.


Plagas de Egipto (Ex. 7-12), desórdenes de la naturaleza: agua convertida en sangre; ranas, piojos, moscas, etc… granizo… tinieblas.

Plagues of Egypt (Ex. 7-12), disorders of nature: water converted to blood; frogs, lice, flies, etc. Hail… Darkness.


Josué 10:10, 11, Dios “arrojó desde el cielo grandes piedras” de granizo contra los ejércitos de los cananeos.

Joshua 10:10, 11, “the LORD cast down large hailstones from heaven on” the armies of the Canaanites.


Pero no por eso debemos concluir que toda tormenta de granizo sea castigo de Dios. Tampoco otros desastres. Luc. 13:1-5; Jn. 9:1-3.

But we should not conclude, therefore, that every hailstorm is a punishment from God. Other disasters neither. Lk. 13:1-5; Jn. 9:1-3.


C. Leyes de “la naturaleza” son “leyes de Dios”. No se puede separar las dos. La “naturaleza” no es una entidad en sí, aparte de Dios.

C. Laws of “nature” are “laws of God.” The two cannot be separated. “Nature” is not a separate entity in itself, apart from God.


Por ej., Dios controla los océanos. Job 38:11, "Hasta aquí llegarás, pero no más allá; aquí se detendrá el orgullo de tus olas"?

For ex., God controls the oceans. Job 38:11, “'This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!’”


Las “leyes naturales” producen todo lo bueno que disfrutamos, pero también producen los desastres que causan tanta miseria.

“Natural laws” produce all the good we enjoy, but also produce the disasters that cause so much misery.


Como en estos días los “tsunamis” o los cuatro fuertes huracanes que barrieron el estado de Florida durante el verano pasado.

As in these days the “tsunamis” or the four strong hurricanes that swept the state of Florida during last summer.


Los desastres naturales son como ADVERTEN-CIAS. Simbolizan los juicios de Dios. Tales desastres deberían producir el arrepentimiento.

The natural disasters are as WARNINGS. They symbolize the judgments of God. Such disasters should produce repentance.


II. Explicación bíblica: Gén. 1:31, toda la creación de Dios era “muy buena”, pero 3:17, “Maldita será la tierra”. 5:29, “la tierra que Jehová maldijo”. ¿Por qué? El pecado.

II. Biblical explanation. Gén. 1:31, all the creation of God was “very good,” but 3:17, “cursed is the ground.” 5:29, “the ground which the Lord has cursed.” Why? Sin.


Es el planeta más hermoso de los nueve planetas que giran alrededor del sol. Los astronautas, observan este planeta desde espacio…

It is the most beautiful planet of all the nine planets that circle the sun. Astronauts, observing this planet from space …


Ellos han comentado varias veces sobre lo verde y lo bello de la tierra. Este estrado de Dios es un hogar muy bueno para el hombre.

They have commented several times about how green and beautiful the earth is. This footstool of God is a very good home for men.


Pero el pecado produce toda clase de sufrimiento. La tierra ya no es un huerto de Edén (paraíso). Ahora la experiencia humana incluye sufrimiento

But sin produces all kinds of suffering. The earth is no longer a garden of Eden (paradise). Now the human experience includes suffering.


Esta corrupción de la creación es en realidad la fuente de todo mal y todo sufrimiento en el mundo. ¿Culpar a quién? ¿A Dios o al hombre mismo?

This corruption of the creation is in reality the source of all evil and all suffering in the world. Who is to be blamed? God or man himself?


No solamente produce espinas, sino también terremotos, inundaciones, sequías, huracanes, ciclones, erupciones volcánicas, etc.. No hubo tales cosas en el huerto de Edén.

It not only produces thorns, but also earthquakes, floods, drouths, hurricanes, cyclones, volcanic eruptions, etc... There were no such things in the garden of Eden.


Algunos dicen que estamos cambiando el clima del globo con las químicas usadas aquí en la tierra que suben a la atmósfera.

Some say that we are changing the global climate with the chemicals used here on earth that go up into the atmosphere.


III. El hombre mismo es responsable de muchos desastres. Dios creó al hombre con “libre albedrío”, puede pensar y hacer lo que quiera.

III. Man himself is responsible for many disasters. God created man with “free will,” so he can think and do whatever he wishes.


Gran parte del sufrimiento del hombre es el producto de su propio libre albedrío, el derecho de pensar y hacer según su propia voluntad.

A great part of the suffering of man is the product of his own free will, the right to think and do according to his own will.


El hombre inventa cosas que son útiles pero que también son peligrosas (auto, avión, tren, moto, maquinaria y herramientas de toda clase, etc.)

Man invents things that are useful but also are dangerous (car, plane, train, motorcycle, machinery and tools of all kinds, etc.)


Los hombres quieren pelear y hay guerras de toda clase. ¿No puede Dios acabar con guerras? Sí. ¿Cómo? Quitarle al hombre su libre albedrío.

Men want to fight and there are wars of every kind. Can’t God put an end to wars? Yes. How? By taking away from man his free will.


Una causa principal de mucho sufrimiento es la ignorancia y la pobreza. Mayoría de las víctimas de desastres naturales son los más pobres.

One principal cause of much suffering is ignorance and poverty. The majority of the victims of natural disasters are the poorest.


¿Sería mejor que el hombre fuera máquina o robot controlado por Dios en lugar de tener libre albedrío y luego sufrir las consecuencias?

Would it be better that man were a machine or robot controlled by God instead of having free will and then suffer the consequences?


Conclusión. ¿Qué lecciones hay en todo esto para el cristiano? ¿Cómo deben afectar nuestra actitud hacia Dios tales desastres?

Conclusion. What lessons are there in all this for the Christian? How should such disasters affect our attitud toward God?


Tengamos mucho cuidado con nuestra actitud hacia Dios. Es MUY irreverente cuestionarle o discutir con El. Job 1:21, 22.

Let’s be very careful about our attitude toward God. It is VERY irreverenty to question Him or argue with Him. Job 1:21, 22.


Romanos 9:20, “oh hombre, ¿quién eres tú para que alterques con Dios? ¿Dirá el vaso formado al que lo formó: "¿Por qué me hiciste así?"

Rom. 9:20, “O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, "Why have you made me like this?"


Al observar el huracán, ciclón, terremoto, deberíamos meditar en el gran poder de Dios y pensar en tales tragedias como llamamiento al arrepentimiento.

On observing a hurricane, cyclone, earthquake, we should meditate on the great power of God and think of such tragedies as a call to repentance.


La vida en la tierra es una gran prueba, una existencia breve bajo circunstancias buenas y malas en la cual debemos prepararnos para el encuentro con Dios.

Life on the earth is a great trial, a brief existence under good and bad circumstances in which we should prepare ourselves to meet God.


Tales calamidades naturales nos recuerdan que no tenemos control sobre nuestro mundo. ¡Somos totalmente dependientes de Dios!

Such natural calamities remind us that we have no control over our world. We are totally dependent on God!
