SOURDOUGH NEWSLETTER — JULY/AUGUST 2017

PRESIDENT ’S CORNER

Summer is finally upon us and if you are like me, you have been taking in every nice day we’ve had! I hope everyone is well rested from the Conference. It was a lot of work but it went off without a hitch! A HUGE thanks goes out to our membership! Without all of your volunteer work, the Conference could not have happened. THANK YOU!

Your Executive Board was sworn in on Thursday, July 13, 2017 and consists of Danika Simpson as Vice President, Kathryn Schreckenghost as Secretary and Claire Mueller as Treasurer. We are very excited to accept these roles and eager to hit the ground run-ning.

This month we say farewell to Fred Mortimer who has done an amazing job of leading our chapter through one of our busiest years yet. But fear not because Fred has gracious-ly agreed to stay on the Board as our Professional Development Chair. The IRWA has released a new platform that helps you to easily track your certification progress and Fred will be able to assist with any questions.

Speaking of positions, Vicki Gerken has moved on to other endeavors so we now have a need for a new Programs Chair. Vicki has done a great job and we are sad to see her go. If one of you is interested in being Programs Chair, please reach out to myself or another Board Member. We really need someone in place before August; a Co-Chair op-tion that alternates months is also available!

Lastly, the Executive Board represents you and we want to make your experience with IRWA as positive, informative and engaging as possible. To that end, we are asking for feedback regarding your experience with our Chapter. What type of things do you like? What are areas we could improve on? What topics would you like to hear about at lunch-eons? With your feedback, we can continue to grow as an Association.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our September meeting. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Josh

Check out this article from the July 17, 2017 Fairbanks Daily News- Miner – Great Alaskan Bowl Company just represented Alaska at a “locally made” event at the White House – sounds like they did really well!

2017 IRWA Education Conference Speaker Gift

All Conference Speakers who gave a presentation at this year’s Education Conference received an Alaskan Wooden Bowl with the Conference Logo. These were a huge hit!

FAIRBANKS — Fairbanks’ own Great Alaskan Bowl Company was on display Monday at the White House, representing Alaska at the first Made in America Product Showcase. Great Alaskan Bowl Company Owner Lewis Bratcher and his daughter, Emily Berriochoa, who previously worked for the company for four years and served on the Fairbanks City Council, represented the company at the event. “We’re just riding this high. There was an incredible array of talent and dedication,” Berriochoa said in a phone interview after the showcase. “There were family businesses and non-family businesses, and regardless of politics, everyone was proud to be on display. I ended up getting to shake the president’s and vice president’s hands. It was an incredible opportunity.” Berriochoa said they got the call about representing Alaska in the Made in America Product Showcase on Thursday. “When you get a call from the White House you put everything on hold and you go,” Berriochoa said. “It really came out of nowhere.” Bratcher and Berriochoa spent Monday in the East Room of the East Wing of the White House. Bratcher left Fairbanks with two “raggedy” suitcases full of bowls, and the company’s display was sandwiched between Gibson Guitars, of Tennessee, and Stetson Hats, of Texas. “It made me feel very big and very small at the same time,” Berriochoa said. “We were set up behind where (President Trump) spoke. We were in the room where everything happened.” “We want to build, create and grow more products in our country, using American labor, Americans goods and American grit,” Trump said during his speech. “When we purchase products made in the USA, the profits stay here, the revenue stays here and the jobs, maybe most importantly of all, stay right here in the USA.” Trump and Vice President Mike Pence admired the bowls as well. “They were impressed by the craftsmanship and beauty of them. Nothing we haven’t heard before. Anybody who stopped to take a look really re-sponded well,” Berriochoa said. Berriochoa said White House staff researched the companies and selected one company from each state, but she’s still not sure about the exact crite-ria on which the Great Alaskan Bowl Company was selected. “Being in the East Room was one of the highlights for me,” Berriochoa said. “JFK laid in state here; it’s where they had the viewing after his assassina-tion. That was heavy. Reagan and Gorbachev had their meeting here. All the presidential and first lady portraits — I’m feeling very humbled by the weight of our history today.” Bratcher was unavailable for a phone interview but Berriochoa said he was proud and relayed a message for him: “This effort was high on the president’s agenda and just to be a part of the event, and be there with everyone from the other states felt like a grass-roots experience. I’ve been there from the ground up and everyone else has too.” Berriochoa said it’s difficult to predict what the showcase will do for the Great Alaskan Bowl Company in terms of business and exposure, but it will be positive. “It was such a valuable experience,” Berriochoa said. “I’m feeling humbled to not only represent my dad and his company, but also my hometown and my state.” Bratcher founded the Great Alaskan Bowl Company in 1991. The company produces functional and decorative bowls, ulu knives, kitchen utensils and more. The factory and shop is located at 4630 Old Airport Road. In recent years, the Great Alaskan Bowl Company has added products to its shop from other producers around the state.
