FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY

CENTRE

University CentreAll our HE students have access to private study zones and dedicated classroom spaces within the Southport College Campus. In addition students are able to use industry standard facilities and equipment for their specific subject area.

Art & DesignOur Art & Design students have access to state-of-the-art facilities including Apple Mac computers, clothes printing presses, screen printing facilities, computer-controlled embroidery machines, 3D printers and modern studio spaces.

Childcare/ Health & Social CareOur newly-refurbished Tony Leigh building contains a simulated hospital ward and nursery to be used by our Childcare and Health & Social Care students.

Computing & ITComputing students benefit from modern Windows PCs with simulated infrastructure and networking facilities. Our computing classrooms were recently refurbished with brand new, bright, modern teaching and learning environments and a state-of-the-art technology workshop.

Creative MediaCreative Media students have access to a fully-equipped TV studio and editing suite, Apple Macs and modern studio space.

EngineeringEngineering students will benefit from our newly refurbished workshop that will include a new e-learning classroom along with around £150,000 worth of engineering equipment.

Games DesignStudents use the same Hollywood standard computer-generated imagery programmes as those used to create the graphics in Oscar-winning films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings.

Graphic DesignGraphic Design students have access to a range of printing presses, Apple Macs, study spaces full of natural light and a gallery to exhibit and sell their work.

PhotographyHigh-end digital SLR cameras and lenses can be loaned by Photography students as well as having access to computers with photo editing software and other facilities such as a darkroom and photography studios.

ScienceScience students can make use of brand new classrooms, science labs, IT room and a range of specialist research books in our library.

The University Centre is well stocked with books and learning resources. You can self-loan laptops and there are quiet study areas as well as a relaxation area exclusively for Higher Education students.

Pre-AccessOur Pre-Access courses are for learners who want to progress into Further or Higher Education courses, but who maybe didn’t gain the necessary qualifications to go straight into a Level 3 course. The courses are designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the chosen subject but also to assist students with the skills necessary for successful completion of the Access courses.

AccessAccess to Higher Education courses are designed for people who want to take a university level course, but who didn’t gain the qualifications they needed while at school. Each Diploma includes units in several different subjects, and taken together these prepare students for the study of a particular subject at degree level. Access courses are designed to help you get back into education, and our tutors will provide all the support and guidance you need to achieve your goals.

Teacher TrainingAt Southport College we offer the full range of teacher training courses for individuals looking to enter this sector. Courses begin with the Certificate in Education and Training, Preparatory which provides an introduction to teaching and it’s the essential first step towards becoming a teacher. We also offer the Certificate in Education and Training, Introductory which is a qualification that represents the associate teacher role. Finally, the PGCE/CertEd corresponds to the full teacher role and is one of the final steps towards becoming a fully qualified teacher.

HND/HNCHNCs (Higher National Certificates) and HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) are work related (vocational) Higher Education qualifications. Whilst bachelor’s degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNCs and HNDs are designed to give you the skills to put that knowledge to effective use in a particular job. HNCs take two years to complete part-time and HNDs take two years full-time and can also be taken part-time over three years. They are highly valued by employers both in the UK and overseas and can also count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations. HNDs and HNCs can also provide exemption from certain degree modules.

Foundation DegreesFoundation Degrees are designed to equip you for a particular area of work; as well as giving you the general skills that are useful in any type of job. They’re university-level qualifications, like other degrees but Foundation Degree courses are designed with a particular area of work in mind, with the help of employers from that sector. Typically, you’ll get the chance to learn in the workplace as well as the classroom. Foundation Degrees offer a route into Higher Education for people of all ages and backgrounds. Please note all Foundation Degrees include a compulsory placement.

Honours DegreesHonours Degrees are the highest level of qualification offered at Southport College. They involve three years of study and combine some practical sessions alongside theory based learning, often with a dissertation or project in the final year. Students who have completed HNDs or Foundation Degrees may be eligible to ‘top-up’ to an Honours Degree.

STUDENT FINANCE

STUDENTS OF ANY AGE STUDYING ALL HE COURSES, INCLUDING PGCE, CAN APPLY FOR A LOAN33 Payment for our university level courses is normally through the Student Loan system.

33 Students must have proof of their loan in place before they can enrol on a course.

33 You can apply for a loan by visiting https://www.gov.uk/student-finance.

33 You can also pay your course fees in full without a loan or via an invoice to your employer if they are paying for you.

STUDENTS AGED 19 OR OVER STUDYING ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COURSE33 Advanced Learner Loans have been introduced for learners aged 19 and above, who are studying at Level 3 and above and whose course starts on or after 1st August 2016.

33 These loans will cover the cost of tuition so you don’t have to pay up front. Interest on the loans is lower than anything available on the high street and linked to inflation.

33 It’s really easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check.

33 Repayments don’t start until April 2018 and you won’t have to pay anything back until you are earning over £21,000 a year.

33 The good news is that where a student takes out a loan for an Access to Higher Education course, the outstanding amount is written off upon completion of a Higher Education programme.

ART FOUNDATION LEVEL 4 COURSE33 Students aged 18 when enrolling on this course will not be required to pay tuition fees.

33 Students aged 19 and over will be required to pay the tuition fee and can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost.

Adam said “I’d got as far as I could in my career but needed a degree to progress further. An access course was the easiest way for me to get to university and initially I looked at studying at another college closer to my home. However, after talking to the tutors and taking a look around Southport College I got a better feeling. The tutors were really supportive and it seemed a better place to study. What’s more, the course is only 3 days a week at Southport College as opposed to 5 days elsewhere, so it was much better for my childcare arrangements.” Adam added “I’d not been in education for 15 years but the tutors really helped me return to studying and the students on the course all supported each other as a group. When people have asked me what doing an Access Course has been like, I’ve described it as doing a Rubik’s Cube. Sarah said “I searched online to find out what I needed to do to become a midwife and found out my qualifications were not suitable. The Access to Health Professions course at Southport College was the fastest way for me to get what I needed. I’d left it a bit late to apply but the tutors got me on the course just in time!The level of work is intense but the tutors are all approachable, plus the group of students support each other too. I’m starting at Edge Hill in September and because I paid for my course with a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, that debt will be written off. So if you are thinking of a career change, I would say go for it!”

Apply through Southport CollegeThe Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design offers you the opportunity to explore and develop your artistic practice in preparation for a university degree. You will study a diverse range of materials, techniques and processes to enable you to build a strong portfolio of work.

The course includes a large amount of practical work, which is supported by written work. In addition to the course’s timetabled hours, you will also be expected to undertake approximately 10 hours of independent study every week.

Returning to full-time education after a 40 year gap was a daunting prospect but I found I really enjoyed being at Southport College and it encouraged me to leave my job as a white van driver to pursue a career working with children. I enrolled on an Access course and then progressed onto the Foundation Degree.
