Dreamspin.Jeanette Roberts is organizing this retreat for spinners which will be held at the Cowichan Lake Outdoor Education Centre onFebruary 11 - 13, 2011 (Friday-Sunday).Contact Jeanette at<[email protected]>

Guild Website. There was some discussion about why some of the guild blog is “members only”. The blog is set up with some areas open to the public so that people can find us with a web search and contact us. Once someone joins the guild then they are given the password to access the other areas which are kept private to protect members’ personal information and also to allow us to conduct guild business such as voting for library purchases. Reminder again that the guild website address is: <http://tswguild.wordpress.com/>Contact Hannah if you’ve forgotten the password.

Saturday Textile Days.Sandi Doerksen will host the Saturday Textile Day on Feburary 26th and Alison Irwin will host on March 26th. We still need a volunteer to host the January Textile Day. Contact Michele Pace at [email protected] if you can help.

Spinning Interest Group. As mentioned in the October newsletter, Sandy Riecken will organize a spinning interest group. It will be for guild members, with guests welcome to join us for one visit and then hopefully become members. Sandy will check with Mary Quenneville on availability of the Knights of Columbus Hall for this purpose. Hopefully the hall will be available for the 4th Tuesday of the month. The group will run on a trial basis for 6 months, January through June, with the purpose of learning more about spinning. The guild carder can be used here. Sandy is also hoping to see some great entries for the Cowichan Exhibition as a result of this focus on spinning. Motion: to rent the Knights of Columbus Hall for the 4th Tuesday for 6 months for the spinning interest group. Motion passed.

Follow up: Spinning Interest Group.Sandy was able to rent the Hall for the 4th Tuesday of each month, starting Jan. 25, inclusive June 28.Sessions run from 10:00 to 1:00.Sandy Riecken is the Moderator.Aim: Spinning for a project.Open to all Guild members in good standing. Guests are welcome for one visit, but are asked to join the Guild if they want to come on a regular basis. Bring a lunch and a drink, your spinning wheel in good working order, or your drop-spindle and any other spinning equipment you may need, a notebook, pen and or pencil, and not to forget the fibres you want to spin.

Please contact Sandy if you are planning on joining the Spinning Interest Group, or have any questions. 250 748-5701e-mail:<[email protected]>

Guild Sale at The Loft.Alison Irwin reported that the total sales (before Valley Vines to Wines’ commission is subtracted) were $4,419. This compares very favourably to last year’s total sales of $3,222. In addition to the pre-sale promotional events and advertising that was done, waterproof banners were attached to the pillars outside Valley Vines to Wines and these worked very well to let people know about the sale. Alison designed the wording on the banners without the date so that they can be used again each year. Motion: To reimburse Alison for the cost of The Loft Sale banners in the amount of $80.64. Motion passed.

The guild members are very grateful to Alison and Els for their enthusiasm, dedication and hard work in organizing this event for the last 2 years. Thank you! Thank you also to all those members who contributed to the sale, whether by submitting items for sale or doing a shift at The Loft. A real team effort made it into a very successful event. For this year’s sale we have Barbara Birke and Barbara Dowd coordinating the event, with help from Evid. Sandie Laver answered Barbara Dowd’s call for more assistance. The committee could still use another 2 people to spread out the workload. Please contact Barbara Birke or Barbara Dowd, if you can help.

Note: The logo at the top of this column, is our new, official logo for our annual Guild Sale, created by Alison. The woven background is Evid’s shawl.Thank you Alison and Evid, for your creative efforts, a very good starting point for the new group to work with.

Guild Equipment.A reminder that Karen Doucette (Valerie Rennie-Bell’s daughter), is storing the guild equipment. Valerie made it clear, that since Karen and Valerie live on the same property, there is nearly always someone home to help any Guild member with borrowing a piece of Guild equipment. Please phone ahead when you are planning to pick up Guild tools.

Hall Key.Jan MacKinnon-Loop has the hall key now. Mary Quenneville keeps the spare key at all times.

Cobble Hill Fair.Willie Cherry needs to know if the tent size for last year’s demonstration was suitable. The members who participated in the demonstration last year thought the tent was the correct size, and also located in a good spot. Janette Lorimer is the guild coordinator for this event and will contact Willie directly.

Textile terminology:Linsey-woolsey.From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linsey-woolsey>

Linsey-woolsey (less often, woolsey-linsey or in Scottish English, wincey) is a coarse twill or plain-woven fabric woven with a linen warp and a woollen weft. Similar fabrics woven with a cotton warp and woollen weft in Colonial America were also called linsey-woolsey or wincey.[1][2] The name derives from a combination of linen and woollen. This textile has been known since ancient times. It is also known as a union yarn, where one spun single may be wool and the other spun single is linen or cotton, plied together becoming a union or linsey woolsey yarn.Encyclopedia of Hand Spinning, by Mabel Ross.

Cowichan Exhibition 2011TSWG Sheep to Shawl demonstration in the planning stages. I have given Sandi Doerksen a written proposal for a TSWG Sheep to Shawl Demonstrations, to be held during the three day Cowichan Exhibition. Sandi has contacted Pam Smith, to have this proposal put on the agenda, for the upcoming Cow.Ex. board meeting in February. Sandi will also suggest that we should have our Guild tables on the opposite side (North) of the Hall from where we were located in 2010. This location should be close to an exit, so we can have space outside for some of the Sheep to Shawl activities, such as the shearing, sorting, washing and maybe even some dyeing of the fibres. The spinning, knitting or weaving can be done inside the Hall.

If we do get the go-ahead from the Cowichan Exhibition folks, we need volunteers to help with the demonstrations. Please contact me if you are interested in helping out. Els van Dam 250 743-0851. We need demonstrators, for the sorting of the fleece, washing the fibres, dyeing some of the fibres, spinning them up for knitting or weaving a scarf or a shawl.

Jan has promised that we can have one of her sheep available for the shearing. Pieter Demooy, who shears Jan’s sheep, has committed himself to come and shear the sheep during our demonstrations.

Threads MagazineThis March issue, # 153, now on the news stands, is worth buying. The cover story gives a comprehensive account about the making of silk sewing thread. Staring with cocoons being reeled to the coloured end product of silk thread on a spool.

There is also a wonderful detailed article about Mini Shibori, done with the use of nontoxic dyes. I am not sure about the “non toxic” part, however the samples shown in the article are wonderful, all 5 pages of it.

Pictures from Els van Dam’s archives

Browsing through the March issue of Threads Magazine, you will also find a mention of a source for very nice leather bag straps. The price is a bit on the steep side, however they look easy enough to make yourself. They are perfect to finish off that bag you were going to always create, woven, felted, knitted and fulled. These handles are a perfect starting point for that design you got stuck on.
