Introduction

Student designers may find diffecult to organize ty-pographic. Through the book Typographic Systems written by Kimberly Elam, designers will explore the typographic systems. The systems that are includ-ed axial, radial, dilatational, random, and grid. All design is based on a structural system. Each are explained specificly ands clearly examples. The purpose of this book is helping student de-signers have a clear ture in their mind and then get closer to the world of design.

Axial System

Organized along a single axis

8 9 Typographic System Using InDesignAxial Typographic System

In this composition, the information is separate to create attention that draw the eyes to and give it more interesting.

The axial is the simplest system. All elements are organized either to the left or right of a single axis. Examples of axial system include the trunks of trees, and plants.

The axial system may simple and and look boring but by using help from grouping, word space, letter space, leading, and composition.

In this advance examples, more than one lines could create an interesting decoration but still not break the axial system that has show.

The axial system may simple and and look boring but by using help from grouping, word space, letter space, leading, and composition.

Designers should find the rela-tionship between elements and express them in the impressive way.

12 13 Typographic System Using InDesignRadial Typographic System

The radial system is an great system to express the feeling. In this system, all elements are or-ganized to extend from a central point of focus. Examples include the ray of the sun, petals of flow-ers, fireworks, starfish, ect. This point can be implied or depicted

The compositions in the radial system are dynamic because of the focal point that draw out eyes to attentionand and the way to read the text more active with dif-ferant ways. But this also a point that need to beware of because there are other ways that could not be easy to read and that could effect the way that reader read.

In this composition, dilata-tion system is created as a snail shell that spread the in-formation along the structure of the shell.

In the dilatational system circle dilate or expand from a central point. Example include the iris of the eye, the waves created when a pebble is dropped into still wa-ter, and sound waves.

Similar to radial system, the com-positions of the dilatational system are dynamic as drawing the eyes to the movements of the ele-ments.

Designers should understand the dilatational system and connect with another system could create more interesting composition and hierachy.

The random system organized the elements randomly without definite aim, pattern, direction, rule, meth-od or purpose. The random system creates a dynamic composition.

The random system creates the fun for desiners and reader while it is random, the eyes and mind will searching for connection and find it is interesting to do so.

The form is created from the pos-itive and negative space could be stand out to reader. But designers should remember the meaning of the work of design is arrange con-tent in meaningful way. It means while doing randomly still need purpose in the content and be creative. Colors and techniques are a great help.

The texts move in different directions and hard movement that create more dynamic.

The angle of the text lightly tilt to create a soft movement between the information.

Grid System

Organized by vertical and horizontal divisions

Similar to the axial system, the grid system align elements between the axis but differs in that there are more than a single axis. Grid system has more columns, more rows, more choices to arrange ele-ments to create hierarchies.

Grid system is one of systems that designers choose the most be-cause of its formal structure.

The grid system is a system of vertical and horizontal divisions that organize and create relation-ships between elements. Exam-ples include windows, maps, and crossword puzzles.

The grid arrangements are usually formal and have things in order. Grids are frequenly used in publi-cation design and web design as they guide information hierarchies and create rhythm in multiple pag-es.

In this poster, the axial system is used and lined up as the slope of the mountain to separate the in-formation in both sides of the axis.

Grid system and the Red Rock Mountrain create the rectangle shape in this poster. Elements are arranged on grid of the Red and Amphitheater separate the in-formations. Colors show up the time and the bands to help the viewer quickly find main information.

In this poster, random system is used. Amphitheater is broken apart to creat the shape of the mountain and also shown the steep of the rock. The informa-tion is random arrange but still organize in the rect-angle shape like the grid system.
