Typhoon Haiyan

WHAT IS A TYPHOON?A typhoon, like typhoon Haiyan, is a type of vicious storm that is characterized by circular or spiral winds, which can be hundreds of kilometres in diameter. Typhoons are called Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Pacific, Tropical Cyclones in the Indian Ocean and Typhoons in the western Pacific. Typhoons are measured on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Typhoon Haiyan began on Friday 8th November and affected islands of the Philippines, the two worst affected islands by the typhoon were Samar and Layte.
THE EXTENT OF THE TYPHOON
Typhoon Haiyan blasted the Philippines with winds up to 380 km/h along the largely populated coastal cities such as Tacloban, the capital of Layte.
The Philippines is a poor, developing nation that is very vulnerable to these types of disasters
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY RESPONSE
O Asian Development Bank: $500m emergency loans and $23m in grants
O Australia: A$30m ($28m) package, including medical staff, shelter materials, water containers and hygiene kits
O China: 10m yuan ($1.6m; £1m) in relief goods plus $200,000 (£120,000) from government and Red Cross
O European Commission: $11mO Indonesia: Logistical aid including aircraft, food, generators and
medicineO Israel: 148-person team, including search, rescue and medical
services; field hospital with 100 tonnes of aidO Japan: $10m, including tents and blankets. Pledged up to 1,000
soldiers, 25-person medical team already sentO South Korea: $5m plus a 40-strong medical teamO UAE: $10m in humanitarian aidO US: $20m in humanitarian aid, 90 marines, aircraft carrier plus logistics

household items
