1. Single Displacement

A + BC —> AB + C

Kaden Nathan Aislyn Poor Nathan

• happens when a single element is replaced by a different element from an ionic compound

A + BC —> AB + C

Example: Cu + AgCl —> CuCl + Ag

1. Single Displacement

1. Double Displacement

• occurs when ionic compounds switch their metals

AB + CD —> CB + AD

Example: AgNO3 + NaCl —> NaNO3 + AgCl

2. Double Displacement

Single or Double?Zn + HCl —> H2 + ZnCl

copper chloride + aluminum —> aluminum chloride + copperAgNO3 + NaCl —> NaNO3 + AgCl

Cu + AgCl —> CuCl + Agmagnesium bromide + zinc chloride —> magnesium chloride + zinc bromide

2CuCl + CaO —> CaCl2 + Cu2O

Zn + NaCl —> ZnCl2 + Na

CuNO3 + K —> Cu + KNO3

NaOH + KNO3 —> NaNO3 + KOH

NaCl + F2 —> NaF + Cl2

calcium + hydrogen chloride —>

Zinc + Hydrogen chloride —> Hydrogen + Zinc chloride

Sodium chloride + Fluorine —> Sodium fluoride + Chlorine

Aluminum + Copper chloride —> Copper + Aluminum chloride

Double Displacement lab

1.Obtain the dropper bottles and spot plate. 2.Place 5 drops of one chemical in a depression of the spot plate. 3.Place 5 drops of second into the same depression. 4.Observe and record any changes. (DID IT FORM A PRECIPITATE?) 5.Repeat this procedure in different depressions for each combination in the observation chart. 6.Dispose of the mixtures as instructed by the teacher.
