DEFINITION A few noteworthy definitions are:

1. Performance appraisal is a formal assessment and ratingof individuals by their managers at an annualreview meeting – Michael Armstrong

2. Performance appraisal is a process of systematically evaluating performance and providingfeedback upon which performance adjustments can bemade. – Schermerhorn et al. 2004

3. Performance appraisal is a system of review and

evaluation of an individual’s (or team’s)performance. – Mondy et al. 20024. Performance appraisal involves the identification,

Important considerations in designing effective performance appraisalsystem are:

1. Establishment of performance goals and standards.
