Purpose wise
It can be classified into two categories
1. Special purpose computer:- it is design to perform only specific task.
2. General purpose computer:- it is one that can store any program and can be used in countless applications.
Size and performance wise
They are classified into four major components:-
1. Micro computers
2. Minicomputers
3. Mainframe computers
4. Super computers.
Micro computers
A micro computer is a small computer with a micro processor as its central processing unit
. Micro computers became popular in the 1970s and 80s with the advent of increasingly powerful microprocessors.
Application
Home -families use micro computers for education.
Medical uses- the first micro computer was build specially for storing medical records.
Micro computers
Key features
1. Smaller than mini computers
2. High speed computer but less than mini
Disadvantages:-
3. Experts are required to operate.
4. Limited hardware devices are connected
Mini computers
A mini computer is a class of smaller computers that evolved in the mid -1960s . They use of transistors and core memory technologies, minimal instruction set and less expensive such as teletype modal 33 ASR
Mini computers
Key features
1. Higher processing speed
2. Smaller size
3. Cheaper
Disadvantage
4. Cannot connect all hardware.
5. Cannot execute all languages.
