Need to know info
What is an Ecosystem? ec·o·sys·tem [ ékō sìstəm ] 1.organisms and their
environment: a localized group of interdependent organisms together with the environment that they inhabit and depend on
Synonyms: bionetwork, biome, biota, ecology, flora and fauna, environment
What is Symbiosis? sym·bi·o·sis [ sìm bī ṓssiss ] 1.close association of animals or
plants: a close association of animals or plants of different species that is often, but not always, of mutual benefit
2.mutually beneficial relationship: a cooperative, mutually beneficial relationship between two people or groups
Synonyms: cooperation, interdependence, relationship, association, synergy, interaction
What is a Biome? bi·ome [ b m ] 1.major ecological community: a
division of the world's vegetation that corresponds to a defined climate and is characterized by specific types of plants and animals, e.g. tropical rain forest or desert.
A REGIONAL Ecosystem (your old book)
Synonyms: bionetwork, biome, biota, ecology, flora and fauna, environment
ArcticTypes of Climate:
Tundra The flat treeless lands
that form a ring around the Arctic Ocean are called tundra—almost exclusively located in the northern hemisphere
Less than 15 inches of precipitation a yr..
The land has permafrost—the subsoil is constantly frozen
Subarctic Types of Climate
Taiga Evergreen forests
called Taiga cover the lands of this region
Huge temp variation between winter and summer
Summers are usually short and cool—winters are always very cold and last 5-8 months of the yr.
TemperateTypes of Climate
Temperate Forest Are made of
deciduous and coniferous trees
Located outside of the tropics
Temperate Grassland (Steppe) Flat, grassy, treeless
plains Found in the
northern hemisphere—are Temperate Grasslands aka Steppe or prairie
In the southern hemisphere they are often called Pampas
Desert Receive less than 10 inches of
rain in a yr. Hot deserts: (Sahara) have low
humidity and high temp during the day and freezing temps at night –(Tropical Dessert)
Cool/Cold Deserts: Found in the mid-latitudes (mostly Northern Hemisphere)—often in the “rain shadow” of nearby mountains. Summers are warm to hot, and the winters range from cool to below freezing.—(Temperate Dessert)
TropicalTypes of Climate
Tropical Wet: Rain Forest Little variation in
temperature over the year (always hot) Average temp of @
80* Rainfall almost daily—
avg. @ 80 inches a yr. Found in Central and
South America, Africa and Southwest Asia
Examples?
Tropical Wet and Dry Has a rainy season in the
summer and a dry season in the winter
Temp is cooler in the dry season and warmer in the wet season
Rainfall is less and occurs mostly in the wet season
Usually found next to Tropical Wet climates—Africa, South and Central America, and parts of Asia
Semiarid Receives very little
precipitation (@ 16 in. a yr.)
Summers are hot, winters are mild to cold—some actually have snow
Found in the interior of continents (continentality?) and around Desserts
**Contains some of the most productive agriculture lands in the world
Tropical Grassland: Savanna Flat ,grassy,
mostly treeless, plains
Found in the tropics area between the
Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn—near the equator
Etc…Other types of climate zones
Humid Continental Great variety in temp and
precipitation Cold air masses from the Artic
(north) flow south over this area and collide with warm air masses form the tropics which causes changes in weather conditions
This area experiences 4 seasons (length depends on latitude)
Found in the mid-latitude interiors of the Northern Hemisphere
Highlands The climate varies
with latitude, elevation, topography, and continental location
