“Where? Adverbs” vs. Prepositions

• A preposition requires an object. • An adverb has no object.

– If you want to see the eclipse, you will need to go outside. • “OUTSIDE” tells you where you will need to go,

so without an object “OUTSIDE” is an adverb.

– Dorothy colors outside the lines. • “OUTSIDE” is a preposition. • “LINES” is the object of the preposition.
