1-11-11Game night vs. Alma. Record 6-3Did not feel like we had a solid practice the day before. However we ended up winning the game 39-25. Ended the game with 11 turnovers and out rebounded the opponent by 6. We are a primarily man to man team, however we were not jumping to the ball or anticipating screens very well throughout the first half. During half I switched us into the 1-3-1 ¾ quart which allowed us to break the game open. I personally do not enjoy going to a zone but understand there is a time and a place for it, and it worked out well for us tonight.

*Practice went ok tonight I had to show up later into practice because of class, but my assistants went through the practice plan.

1-14-11Game vs Eleva-Strum. Record 7-3We played very well tonight. We had not faced another team like ourselves that press the entire game and we broke the press very efficiently. The only down fall of the night was finishing around the rim. We had numerous opportunities with wide open lay ups and were unable to capitalize. It seemed as if we were to open and the players anticipated contact without anyone around them. We won the game 40-24. Our help side defense is continuing to get better, however we are slow help on the drive from the back side. That will be an emphasis for the coming weeks practice. We ended the game with 16 turnovers which is a few to many from what we expect from ourselves. This was the first time in over 10 years that we had a team from any level beat Eleva and the kids were very excited and confident with their performance after the game. Although they felt a sense of accomplishment they knew they have some things they can improve on as a team, that is why I feel this group can be very special in the coming years. After the game I heard a lot of constructed criticism and congratulations from all of them.

1-22-11Game vs Whitehall. Record 8-3We came out kind of slow. I do blame that on myself. I have been having my assistants run practice on days I have night classes which is now Tues and Thurs I can not make practice because of class from 3 to 5 and Weds I have to leave practice early for a lab at 5. I appreciate my assistants but I know the kids test them because they have really never been in charge. It has usually been myself being the disciplinarian during practice. This is my final year at the school so I do believe it is a great opportunity for the guys under me to audition for the job next year. Although we did come out slow our defense was very solid. Our help side was very good, although jumping to the ball is a continuous struggle, which we will continue to make it a key priority during practice. I have learned however when our motion is stagnant to run a couple sets to get the kids moving. It always seems to help us get into the rhythm of the game when we are sluggish. We ended up winning the game 44- 27. I pride myself and my teams on the defense end, and at the midway point of the season the kids coach themselves, which is great. Players are now talking like basketball players, I can hear talk about help side rotation and discussion on how we defend ball screens and closing out with our feet moving. Offensively we are getting there and I’m satisfied with our progress so far in moving without the ball and looking for the openings within the offense. At the end of the game I could tell

the kids were not satisfied with their play, although it was a win they do understand there is more to the game then winning.

REMIND the players to get the ball at its highest point and to use a soft touch to put the ball onto the backboard. On the 10th or 15th tip everyone finishes with a lay up.

Shooting 10 minutes 5:15- 5:25We will need three chairs. First team to ten is the winner. Have a rebounder or two, passer, shooter. We are mimicking coming off a screen, which is the chair. Remind them on proper footwork and turning on the inside foot. No jumping into the shot

1-25-11Game vs Lincoln. Record 9-3We came out flat once again but it could be because we did not do our normal defensive philosophy. I knew the other team had not won a game all year and wanted it to be a bit tougher for the kids to get easy lay ups. Defensively we were solid the entire game with some of the same kids that struggle with help side and gap help struggling in that area. However it was a great game to teach in a game setting to the kids. We did go into out press for the first minute of the second quarter to get a spark out of the kids and it made a big difference. Offensively we need to focus more on our post play and figure out a solid philosophy of what we expect them to do which falls on myself to blame. We won the game 48-17. The fourth quarter we focused on post entry and only allowing lay-ups which we ended up getting plenty of lay ups the entire game but we missed plenty of them because of body control. Tomorrow we will work more with body control and finishing with a jump stop. Our guard play was solid, they looked to punch gaps to collapse the defense and were patient enough to get a good look every possession. The kids were pleased with their play and the starters sat most of the fourth quarter and really communicated well with the players that usually need a little more direction throughout a game. I usually try to listen to what they say to each other and for the most part I’m very pleased because its mostly constructive criticism.

1-27-11My C-squad coaches took over practice today due to the fact I had class and was only able to make it back for the last half hour. We worked on our zone offense in preparation for the game tomorrow. Focused on seeing the open gaps within a zone D. However today I helped out one of the seniors on the team that coaches a 7th grade team. I really like having some of the older kids help out with coaching younger grades. It lets the players teach what they practice and see the point of what they are being taught while teaching it to others. They see the importance of having a good practice before a game and all the intangibles a coach must go through in order to execute a game plan.

1-28-11Game vs. Melrose-Mindoro. Record 10-3We started out very fast and got out to a ten point lead right away. I began subbing early in order to keep the game competitive. By the end of the first quarter our lead was only at 4. I could tell the starters were frustrated but they did not know nor did I want them to know what I was actually trying to do. We have been blowing teams out of the gym within the first half and the rest of the game becomes a wash when I have to restrict the kids from our normal plan. The frustration continued through the 2nd quarter which made for a great teaching point at half time. I got after a few kids that are very close to being varsity players (well in my mind they meet all the qualifications to be put on varsity) and let them know the importance of these last few games as a team to put each other in an opportunity to be called up. It seemed to do the trick and we came out strong in the second half only giving up 9 points. We won the game 49-25. Many of the kids off the bench have really shown some improvement. I fluctuate the starting line up week to week to push the normal starters to continue to improve. I have kept one of the normal starters out of the line up for two weeks prior to this game because he was just not understanding the importance of taking care of the ball and the importance of the defensive end. This game however he really showed his potential and was very consistent for us. At this level I really want to emphasis the importance of consistent play throughout a year. Many of these kids are not use to being mentally and physically ready every game throughout the course of a long season, and in order to move up I feel as if consistent play is very important at the next level in order to be successful. The kids were very happy after the game and have began to buy into what I’m trying to sell them. Playing time has not been an issue so far this year because I have made it clear from the start of the year (Your playing time reflects your practice performance). Any parent that has approached me regarding this issue has been reminded about that statement and they all have excepted my explanation. I will continue to remind the players on this issue the remainder of the season.

*A keynote to myself I want to be reminded of in the future is the importance of a good warm-up before the game begins. I have stressed this importance for many weeks prior and after watching them tonight I feel they have come to understand the importance. To many times I see teams joking or laughing during warm-ups and I do not believe they are ready for the game when the whistle blows. Tonight there was a lot of communication regarding plays and defensive alignments as well as a lot of encouragement during warm-up drills with slapping hands and what not. This has come to be a very important aspect of the pregame for myself.

1-31-11Game vs Durand Record 10-4I will continue to despise not having practice a day before a game. I strongly think that players need a day prior in order to get there bodies back into a basketball flow instead of letting them sit at home and play video games all weekend. I voiced my concern about not having a practice before the game but in the end the head coach has the final say and apposed the idea and wanted the kids to just relax all weekend. Everyone in the gym court tell something was not right with the players and the score reflected that observation. All three levels of teams lost tonight. The JV squad started the first minute with three turnovers and down 0-8 which extended to 12-2 before any life was present with my players. From a personal stand point there is no way we should have been down a single minute but we were out executed and out hustled. Enthusiasm was no where to be found. At one point we were within 4 points but could not get any closer. We ended up losing 54-46. Defensively we gave up big 3 point shots at times when we were making a run and it killed the momentum with the kids. Close outs were not quick enough or properly done. To many easy looks all game. It was a great teaching game however because I understand they are all very young yet and have let downs, but it made a valid point for my importance on consistent play from everyone. They all understand their role at this time of the year and should be able to perform their role at a consistent level day in and day out. This was also a great game to point out many of the flaws I was not able to recognize because of the poor competition we have played the games prior. I will focus my practice plans to accommodate what needs improvement.

FTs if time allows 2-4-11Game vs Arcadia record 10-5In all honestly we played really well when we did not throw the ball away. We committed 31 turnovers throughout the entire game. We are usually very consistent and stay within 10-16 Turnovers a game and our ultimate goal is to be under 12 turnovers a game. We were winning most of the game and had a two point lead going into the fourth quarter. However being Jv many of the kids have quarter limitations to be eligible to play varsity so the fourth quarter is when I send my two varsity players off to get ready for the varsity game. Arcadia had a different rotation and kept their varsity players for the fourth, granted that is no excuse and there is no reason we should not have been up by double digits at that time. We were struggling with foul trouble with two of the main scorers that do not suit up for varsity and they finally fouled out with 2 minutes remaining and were down to just five players. The kids executed well down the stretch up were just out muscled the

remaining two minutes. The last few minutes all the kids were not in their normal role on the team and many of them were looked upon to make/take shots they are not normally expected to execute. We will focus on taking care of the ball next Monday and we will correct the mistakes made. We are dealing with a lot of sickness which is normal around this time of year so I have to remember to keep stressing the importance of taking care of their bodies.

FT’s*we were kicked out of the gym at 5 tonight for a C squad girls game that we were let aware of at the start of practice. I did not get done with some of the things I wanted to get accomplished today.

2-8-11Game vs Gilmanton record 11-5We had our C squad with us for this game. We played them earlier in the year and I knew I would be able to get everyone in and I played with some different rotations and personnel. We did not press right off the bat but the start of the 2nd we put the press on and broke the game open so we were able to get some younger players in. I tried to place two c squad players in with three jv players to keep things consistent. Everyone played well however I did not like how we closed out on shooters at times. We will focus on closing out with two hands high tomorrow during practice. Maybe having them close out with two hands in practice will stress the importance of it enough to get at least one hand high instead of at chest level. The jv players were very helpful when they had some of the c squad players in. They directed traffic and made sure everyone was in proper help side defensively. We won the game 46-20 with 10 turnovers total which was a big improvement over our 31 the game prior. Our spacing looks to be an issue at the moment but it could have been due to the lack of continuity in the rotations I had put in. We will continue to stress our spacing as well tomorrow.

2-11-11Game vs Eau Claire Immanuel Record 12-5This was a good game for us to judge how much we have improved over the course of the year. We had a new addition as well from the varsity squad we added a player that was not getting a lot of time so we put him on JV for two quarters with us for the remainder of the year. We came out sluggish, so I started calling out some sets for the kids to get some flow going which seemed to help. Our defense was very sound. Eau Claire ran through a lot of post screens and the kids bumped and hedged very well all night. I brought in a friend of mine, after the game who also played college basketball, to talk with the kids about how important it is to work on their game when nobody is watching. I wanted to have the kids hear the importance from someone other then myself. I feel they get a lot more out of it when someone else reiterates what I have been telling them throughout the year. We won the game 55-38.

2-14-11Game vs. Wabasha Kellogg Record 13-5We played very well once again tonight. Everything the kids did came very easy for them tonight. Our press gave us good momentum and our offense was very sound, the kids moved without the ball extremely well. This was a very physical game and the kids responded well and never complained or showed frustrated emotion. They all finished well around the rim and I was able to see a lot of growth physically and emotionally from all of the players. They seem to be adjusting to their bodies and just seem a step ahead of other teams at the moment. We won the game tonight 51-18. Our bench played very well and received a lot of quality minutes in tonight’s game that they all deserve. I’m very excited for this whole group and the future for them in athletics. I told the players the next two practices would be our “fun” practices marking the end of the year.

I put together all of the teams to make it as even as possible. We had a 4 round seeding play. Games were 3 minutes long and each team had to keep track of their points and were seeded by points scored. Elimination games were 4 minutes long and for the championship game I had the kids pick sides of who they thought was going to win and if they picked wrong they had one touchdown to run. The kids enjoyed it and the championship game was pretty entertaining with the kids cheering for the team they picked.

Shooting Comp. 30 min 4:40-5:10We had a double elimination bracket set up for the kids. We placed 3 players to a team and played the shooting game 7-5-3-1 the coaches were also apart of this competition and the kids all wanted a shot at us. We did not have time to finish the final because of a girls game tonight.

2-21-11This was suppose to be our makeup game with Independence but Independence was closed due to the weather. Makeup date set for Friday 2-25-11.

2-22-11Game vs Alma/Pepin Record 14-5The boys played ok tonight. Not great but not bad. They are all very close friends with the players from Alma/Pepin and I believe the kids knew the talent level they were at. The first half we pressed for the first couple of minutes and we pulled it off

because we would have not allowed them to score if we continued, and I wanted it to be semi competitive for the kids. At halftime we were leading by 20 and only allowed 8 points. When we came out at half time I did not like our demeanor that we came out in with warm-ups. The kids were laughing and messing around it seemed like. I was not happy with them in the way they approached the second half and their play showed it. I spent 2 early timeouts to try to regain their focus but it just was not coming together. We scored a combined 14 points in the second half and ended up winning by 16 points. After the game I told them how important it was to keep their focus throughout an entire game. They are young and I understand these are things they need to work on at this level. Consistency in play has always been my main goal I try to reinforce to them every week.

*Initially our season was suppose to be over with by this date but due to politics and weather our season has been extended. This week I plan to continue to work on our things we do as a team with an emphasis on more individual work to give the kids more drills they can use to work on by themselves in the summer.
