Winter 2008Garden and Villa

In this project we were challenged to design a villa and garden that responded to the landscape of Pacific Northwest lake. My design was significantly influenced by two Japanese architectural concepts,“ hide and reveal” and ”the meandering path”.

Tyler Baum and Group Members The Galadriel Luminaire provides ambient lighting to a room setting that currently has an abundance of natural daylight. The goal of this wall sconce is not to be the primary lighting source of the space, but compliment an already well lit room by providing mood lighting. The luminaire itself uses layers of translucent material to diffuses the light emitted from its 15 W T8 bulb. The diffused light provides an ambient glow within the room and washes light along the vertical wall plane.

The challenge for this project was to design a community library for the Whitacer Community in Eugene, Oregon. The concept was to use the theme of overgrowth by utilizing a simple skeletal and rectilinear form which, is over taken by an org anic wall of recycled oil barrels. This dynamic wall as it swoops in from the out-side garden and curves into the hearth creating structural support and providing interactive opportunities.

The project was design a boat house for the University of Oregon crew team. My project was based after framing views of the lake through long wooden slated corridors . The form of the building was based after traditional Pacific Northwest timber construc-tion and was significantly influenced by the design of the historic Dexter Lake covered bridge located adjacent to the proposed site.

Located along Liberty street, the new Salem police headquarters will serve as the cornerstone for reviving the Civic Center Campus. The building’s protruding exterior stair wells serve to create long axial views along the center of the campus. Along with the relocating of the council chamber along Commercial street and the renovation of the civic center, the headquarters will serve to create a bridge across Pringle Creek. Thereby rejuvenating the interior of the site. The building also integrates with the landscape and provides a working model towards Salem’s sustainable values.
