Small time fishermen working betweenMilnerton and Melkbosstrand were re-minded of the importance of safety by

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Melk-bos station commander Rhine Barnes.

Barnes’ advice comes after two fishermenwent missing off the coast at Paternoster lastweek Monday. At the time of going to printthey had not yet been found.

NSRI Melkbos volunteers were called outfor assistance last week Tuesday, but to noavail.

A day after the fishermen went missingtheir boat was found washed up on the beachand of three life-jackets the owner reportedwere on the boat, only one was found washedup on the beach.

This discovery has raised hopes that thefishermen were wearing their life jacketswhen they entered the water.

More than a week later the possibility thatthey’re alive is slim to none, and the causeof the incident remains unknown.

The police and the South African Mariti-me Safety Authority (Samsa) are investiga-ting possible causes.

Barnes elaborated the importance of safe-ty for local fishermen.

“Once a year Samsa inspects the boats offishermen and makes sure they have equip-ment such as life jackets. Fishermen musthave a safety certificate issued by Samsa andmaritime authorities can ask them for theseat any time,” explains Barnes.

“I want to remind fishermen how impor-tant it is to wear their life jackets at all timeswhen they go out into the sea. It must be se-

cond nature to them, like wearing a seat-belt.”

He adds that “small time” fishermen, whodepend on the sea for their daily bread,would go wherever the fish are.

“Some who launch from Milnerton, all theway to Melkbosstrand, would go as far asRobben Island and even Dassen Island nearYzerfontein looking for snoek or yellowtail.”

If they get into trouble then NSRI volun-teers will respond day or night, and even co-me from afar to help one another out.

“For years we were never called out tohelp other stations, but in recent times it hashappened three times,” he said.

Some volunteers would not bat an eyelidif they were asked to go to Paternoster in theearly hours of the morning.

“It’s all in a day’s works,” says Barnes.

One of the Mykonos boats were in for a ser-vice, so Melkbos’s “Spirit of the Vine” wasin the water from 09:30 to 19:00 searching forthe fishermen on Tuesday last week.

Precise planning and hunches were the or-der of the day, but the fishermen were notfound.

Barnes cannot confirm rumours that thefishermen were allegedly abalone poachers.Precisely why someone is in the water whenthey get into danger doesn’t matter to Bar-nes.

If they are in danger, the NSRI volunteerswill do what they can to help.

The two NSRI stations joined Vredenburgpolice, Sea Borderline police, police divers,22 Squadron of the SAAF, National PortsAuthority of Saldanha Bay, and MaritimeSearch and Rescue Coordination Centre inthe extensive search.

Parents who default on theirmaintenance payments willfind it harder to escape the law

dren in South Africa grow up with-out a mother or a father and that intens of thousands of these cases, theabsent parent does not honour theirresponsibility to pay child mainte-nance.“This adds to the downward cycle

of poverty asmany of these childrenare then denied a proper educa-tion,” she said, adding that this isthe single biggest obstacle againstthese children successfully access-

ing opportunities in life.“A little more than a month from

launching the campaign, DAWN,along with the Justice department,National Credit Regulator, creditbureaus and the Department ofTrade and Industry, have managedto tighten up on credit regulationsthat will see maintenance default-ers are brought to book,” she toldTygerBurger.In consultationwith the above en-

tities, new draft regulations for thecredit industry will ensure mainte-nance defaults stay on a person’scredit record for five years, or untila court rescinds a default judge-ment.Furthermore, maintenance pay-

ments will have to be included in allaffordability assessments complet-edwhenapplying for new loans, andclients will be required to declare ifthey have any maintenance defaultjudgements against them.Robinson says draft amendments

were published in the GovernmentGazette three weeks ago for publicinput, after which they will bepromulgated.In addition, the Department of

Justice has drafted a Bill to amendthe Maintenance Act, enablingcredit bureaus to track down main-tenance defaulters who can’t befound by the courts.This Bill will empower credit bu-

reaus to fortify maintenance judge-ments to affect defaulters’ creditrecords.But the fight does not stop here

and is based on a two-pronged ap-proach, the other addressing the is-sue of the efficiency of the mainte-nance courts.“Women often have to take off

work, spend a lot of travelling mon-ey and sit in lines for hours at themaintenance courts while the per-petrators make a mockery of jus-tice. This has to stop and we havelaunched an investigation into allaspects to address the situation,”she says.Several maintenance courts in

Registered voters who live in the wardwill be able to vote for their new councillorafter the previous one was removed fromher post.TygerBurger reported last week that

councillor Marissa Jansen van Vuuren,was officially relieved of her duties on 11August after a disciplinary process.

Provincial DA spokesperson Liza Albre-cht said all the information one needs is onthe Independent Electoral Commission’s

(IEC) website (www.iec.org.za).“The votes will be counted on the evening

of the by-elections. The polls close at 21:00and counting then starts immediately. Nor-mally it is finalised within two to threehours,” she says.

“By the morning, the results, counted andapproved by the IEC, are available. The po-litical parties then generally send out pressreleases. The DA will canvass in the wardbeforehand, as well as put up posters of thecandidate and possibly also advertise in thelocal press.”

People living in Ward 23 (Big Bay, Blaau-wbergstrand, Blouberg, Cape Farms, east ofWest Coast Road, west of R304, north of Sun-ningdale/Parklands built-up area, Melk-bosstrand and parts of Table View) will

therefore have a chance to vote their candi-date of choice into one of the most vital posi-tions in local government.

All by-elections are managed by the IEC.Each ward is divided into voting districtsand there will be a voting station in eachof these.

Alert shop owners in Melkbosstrandhelped catch a suspected thief recently.A “troublesome individual” suspected

of stealing from a number of stores inMelkbosstrand was caught and arrested.Steven Oosthuizen from Seaside Blues

restaurant was apparently approachedby the man the day before, when he triedto sell himsomecomputerparts.Noticingthe parts still had the price sticker of alocal computer shop on it, Oosthuizentold the man he just wanted to check ifthe parts were compatible with his com-puter.He then quickly phoned the computer

store, who sent somebody down to identi-fy the items and confirm they had beenstolen the day before.Apparently the individual had also

been caught out previously when he hadallegedly stolen meat from a local super-market and then tried to sell it to petrolstation attendants down the road, notknowing that the supermarket and petrolstationwere part of the same family busi-ness.When the attendants saw the super-

market stickers on the products they no-tified the manager who took action. Dur-ing the recent arrest, Wayne ForsbergfromMelkbos toMorocco exotic artefactsalso identified the man as being the per-son who had been in his store the previ-ous day when items went missing fromthe display cases. In a joint effort betweencity law enforcement officers and mem-bers of the police, themanwas eventuallyarrested.

The city invites all Capetonians and tou-rists on guidednaturewalks through theTable Bay Nature Reserve to celebratethe arrival of spring.

The spring walks, some through areasnormally inaccessible to the public, willtake place from 14 to 21 September at10:30 each day.

Participants will be able to explorenormally inaccessible parts of the Cityof Cape Town’s Table Bay Nature Reser-ve, which has been nominated reserve ofthe year for two consecutive years.

“Outdoor enthusiasts can look for-ward to being guidedbya topnature con-servation specialist, while they are ta-ken through the southern area of the Ta-ble Bay Nature Reserve,” said city’smayco member for economic, environ-mental and spatial planning, Johan vander Merwe.

“Residents and tourists alike are en-couraged to join our guide for a 2kmstroll through this beautiful area of thereserve. This is yet another innovationin our quest to ensure the sustainability

of our reserves. We can, however, onlyachieve this with the support of mem-bers of the public.”

One of the reserve’s hidden gems is thetreasure chest of Cape Flats sand fynbosinside the old Milnerton Racecourse,with over 200 species in less than 20 haof land. Many of these species are in flo-wer in September. This vegetation typeis critically endangered and not normal-ly accessible to the public.

The rapid urbanisation of Cape Townhas transformed approximately 84% ofthe original extent of this uniquely CapeTown vegetation type.

Participants can meet at the publicopen space next to the road at the thirdtraffic circle on Grand National Boule-vard in Royal Ascot, Milnerton on themornings of the walks. The Melkbos Care Centre will be hosting agolf day on 12 September at Atlantic BeachGolf Club to raise some much needed fundsand also raise awareness about the centreand what they do.To make the golf day a success they need

sponsors for all the holes (16 holes and twowet holes), prizes for the winners, productsfor the goodie bag that each player will re-ceive (about 150 players), players for a 4-ballteam, and items that they can auction at theprize giving.The costs of sponsoring a hole is R1 000

and entitles you to have your brandingplaced at the hole that you would like tosponsor.The two wet holes cost R800 to sponsor,

and you would have to give each player

andahome inMilnerton responsible for thecare of our elderly. They want to create awarm home for all their residents, withChristian love and care of a high standard.They can only achieve this if the communi-ty get involved in the home’s activities.To get a better understanding, it is worth

looking at some statistics.There are 96 people residing in the home.

Approximately 80% of them are women.Furthermore, 49% are frail or need con-stant assistance. This is an indication of thehigh level of daily nursing required.Eighteen of the residents are over the age

of 90, which represents a fifth of the home,and 45 people are aged between 80 and 90.This means that two thirds of the residentsare over the age of 80.Themajority ofHuis Zonnekus’ residents

are poor and dependent on a governmentpension (R1 200 per month). These resi-dents are subsidized by the government byan amount of between R300 to a maximumof R2 000 per month.Therefore, even when a resident is frail,

In the past financial year, the city has held

their second album, Majestic, five years af-ter their debut-release, All Tied Up.Frontman Scottie Moore says Majestic is

very different from their first album andthey have started changing some of their ol-der songs to keep them in line with theirnew material.“The sound is a bit more epic, I would say

it’s a bit more mature.” While there is stilla definite indie influence on the album,Scottie points out there are also splashes ofrock and an alternative style to be heard.He says about a year ago the band made

a conscious decision to make music thatthey listen to and enjoy playing.“We wanted to make music that we’re

happy playing, because you are going toplay these songs hundreds of times.”The album was recorded by Heritage

de Lange after he beat Gordon Roodman atEFC Africa 32 two weeks ago.Shaun, aptly named “The Kid” at the age

of 21, is showing a lot ofmaturity in thehexa-gon and is currently unbeaten after threeprofessional fights in the welterweight divi-sion.Some EFC critics reckon this is one of the

best fights they have ever seen.“I feel honoured that people think that.

Myself and Gordon fought hard that night,it was a bloody mess. We stood and tradedstrikes all fight. Gordon, likeme is awarriorand I respect the hard work he puts in.

Great team“My coaches Dean Johnson and Earl Ab-

rahams are great, always pushing me andkeeping me focused. To be a top fighter youneed a great coaching teamand that is exact-ly what I have,” said a satisfied Shaun.

Shaun learned the art of fighting underthe guidance of GrahamTurner. But, for thelast year Shaun decided to join Lethal EdgeMMA and Fitness Centre managed and

coached by Dean Johnson.“Shaun is really growing in leaps and

bounds, he is much more refined and youcan’t help feel excited for what the future

holds for him,” says Dean.“I see him as an accomplished fighter at

21, there aren’tmany that youngwith his ex-perience.”For now, it’s back in the gym training

hard.

In his own backyardShaun trains five days a week for about

four hours a day. Covering all the basics,with no two sessions are the same.“I will love to fight in my own back yard

at GrandWest on 6 November when it’s EFCAfrica 35. I don’t have any specific fighterin mind, that is up to the EFC, so I will waitand see what they offer. My target now is tojust keep fighting in the organisation,” saidShaun.According to Dean, they would love to

have one or twomore fights before consider-ing a title bout.“I think it will be wise to give Shaun one

of two more fights before we start focusingon a potential title fight. Seeing that he onlyhas three professional fights, it only makessense to give him one or two more fights.”Shaun beat Booto Guylain and Saxon De-

lafield in his previous outings.

buildings, which was really amazing to see.The hotel and staff and the organisers of thetournament were incredibly nice and effi-cient, making the whole experience special.“The course was beautiful and in great

condition, but it is incredibly tough. It wasplaying pretty slow and it has a lot of out ofbounds areas.“If you are not accurate, it costs you big

time, as I found out with that quadruple bo-gey in the first round,” he recalls.Van der Merwe explained that this hap-
