ATable View resident was stripped ofmany of his possessions, apparently“because he has a big heart”.

Two destitute women, Vicky Motley andCathy Lloyd, were arrested by the local po-lice for theft after the suspicion arose thatthey might have stolen many items out ofCraig Nel’s house.

The police are investigating the possibili-ty that the suspects stole these items whilethey were looking after Nel’s house.

He was out of the country for about twoweeks and apparently thought he was doingthe suspects a tremendous favour to givethem a roof over their head.

He returned to an “empty house” last week

Tuesday.Motley and Lloyd have appeared in court

and are denying the charges.This is not the first time that Motley and

Lloyd have been in the news.

HelpedTygerBurger appealed to the public for

help in 2011 for the two living in a field adja-cent to Eagles Crest in Sunridge for almosttwo weeks. The response was significant andthey were helped with money and othergoods.

One of Nel’s friends, who wishes to remainanonymous out of fear that she might be“targeted” by the suspects, elaborates: “Nelknows the suspects well. They have workedon his property before.

“When he went to Congo, he asked themto look after his house, and he thought hewas doing them a huge favour.

“Nel’s friend phoned on the Sunday andafter informing the suspects of Nel’s returnand that she would be coming past the housethe next day, she heard one of the two saying:‘Oh s**t, she is coming tomorrow’!”

EvidenceThe anonymous informant reckons this is

as much evidence as the courts need to con-vict the suspects.

“Why would they have said that? Thefriend went to the house the next day, andthe two were not there. One of the doors wasopen and items like the furniture, the fridgeand the flat screen television were gone. Nei-

ther of the two suspects could be reached ontheir cellphones,” she continues.

Another anonymous resident who says heknows them well from his pub crawlingdays, contactedTygerBurger to elaborate ontheir characters.

He alleges they are involved in drugs andgambling and even claims he was conned bythem in the past. “They prey on people’sgoodwill,” he says.

Spokesperson for Table View police, LtElizabeth Munro, confirmed that the sus-pects appeared in Cape Town Magistrate’sCourt and pleaded not guilty.“We have statements from neighbours whosay they saw the accused load goods into abakkie. The accused said this was their ownstuff.”

Despite another increase in MyCiTi busfares, the City of Cape Town maintainsthat this mode of transport is “compara-ble, if not more affordable” than any oth-er public transport in the area.News that the fares were increased at

the endofMaywasprobablymetwithdis-mayby commuters. Thehike is, however,not solely related to the fuel price or therecent strike, but rather normal annualservice tariff increases.Says the city’s mayoral committee

member: transport for Cape Town, Coun-cillor Brett Herron: “It falls in line withthe annual service tariff increases leviedby the city at the start of each newmunic-ipal financial year. Included in fare pric-ing pressures are fuel price increases andinflation. The city has previously takendecisions not to increase fares despite fu-el costs rising substantially over the lastyear. For example, at the beginning of Ju-ly 2012 there was a similar annual in-crease, where for example the price of atrip on the main route between Table

View and the Civic Centre increasedfrom R10 to R10,60.”WhenHerron responded toTygerBurg-

er’s queries he added that costs are stillvery low for travel with MyCiTi.“When one compares the cost of using

a private car, including the petrol, themaintenance of the car, aswell as the costof parking, particularly on the longertrips, for example the Table View routeand the airport, the cost of public trans-port is much cheaper. In comparisonwith other public transport, for exampletrains, minibus taxis or other bus fares,MyCiTi is also more economical, al-though this is not as easy to compare asnot all public transport (for example rail)travels the same routes as the MyCiTibuses do at the moment,” he continued.MyCiTi fare trip statistics and inde-

pendent market research both indicatethat it has become the transport mode ofchoice and themajority of passengers areregular commuters.MyCiTi makes on average between

10 000 and 13 000 passenger trips perweekday.

The halls at Kalkfontein Primary Schoolwhere Dr Louis Heyns treated patientsevery month was suddenly silent and filledwith saddened faces full of tears.On Monday 3 June the Kalkfontein com-

munity and students from the University ofStellenbosch gathered to say a final goodbyeto a professor anddoctor they truly admired.Louis Heyns, a paediatric specialist and

lecturerwas found dead on 30May in Strandbeachfront, an area dubbed “lovers’ lane”,after having been missing for a week.Upon hearing the news after a week-long

wait, one of his students Raafiq Ely said:“The newswas just heartbreaking to us all”.Most of the students from Stellenbosch

University were part of his initiative, “Mat-ie gemeenskapsdiens”.This initiative which takes the form of

clinics has been running formany years andallows medical students to do diagnoses onpatients and in return helps underprivi-leged communities.One of his previous students, Mawadda

Cassiem-Majal says that the clinicwas start-ed inKalkfontein due to the community hav-ing towalkvery far to reach thenearestmed-ical care.“I’ve been working at these clinics with

him since 2006 and all he did was to help thiscommunity,” she says.The memorial benefit in honour of Heyns

was an emotional one as students sang “Heal

the World” and lit candles in honour ofhim.Dawn Roode, a community leader who

hadknownHeyns formanyyears says thathis greatest attribute was his humility.“He was so humble and was of such a

benefit to the Kalkfontein community,”she says.Dr Ethelwynn Stellenberg, who had

workedwithhim formanyyears reminisc-es and says: “Hemeant somuch to the com-munity and never counted the hours. Thisis a tremendous loss.”Dr Heyns went missing on 22 May after

visiting his brother in Somerset West.As the police tried to retrace the final

moments of the slain Maties lecturer hiscarwaspickedupon theN2and thenagaininHelderview. His bodywas then found ina shallow grave on the Strand beachfront.Dawn, who often hands over soup at the

clinic said that Heynswas a true fan of herinfamous soup dishes.

V The two brothers accused of Heyns’murder, Marthinus (33) and Sarel van derWalt (42) abandoned their bail applicationin the Somerset West Magistrate’s Courton Monday. The third suspect in the mur-der case, Juan Liedeman (37), applied forbail stating the Van der Walt brothers hadbeen threatening him in jail. Parts ofHeyns’ car were found on the premises ofLiedeman’s scrapyard inMalmesbury, im-plicating him in the murder.He was granted R20 000 bail on Tuesday.

Hewas taken to hospital, buthe succumbed to his inju-ries.”Vukubi says that thecause of death must stillbe determined, and onlyafter the medical reportwill they consider the pos-sibility that he was mur-dered.Vukubi could not con-firm or deny any of the ru-mours currently doing the rounds.One of Brown’s good acquaintances, Lin-da Reeves, first contacted TygerBurger andsaid: “He was found naked with only hisshoes on. He had panga wounds to hisbody.”

who knew him.She said on Facebook:“It is with a very heavyheart that we have toshare tragic news withyou this morning.“One of our colleagues,Malcolm Brown, passedaway tragically on Satur-day morning. Malcolmwas a ray of sunshine inour house and in thelives of somany animals.Our sincere condolencesgo out to Malcolm’s fami-ly and friends. RIP Mal-colm.”The response to thisFacebook post was sig-nificant, andevery single

one of the replies was heartfelt.“Extremely sad, why do all the good guysalways go first? RIP Malcolm hope you arerunning around with all the doggies inheaven,” reads one message.Another reads: “To all at African Tailsand to Malcolm’s family – I am so saddenedby this tragic news. I had the honour ofworking alongside him when visiting ATand a sweeter man you could not find.“Malcolm will be missed on my Fridayvisit with him laughing at me when thepuppies come in andhim saying tome: ‘NO,you can’t take them all home’.”

The Rietvlei water area in the City of CapeTown’s Table Bay Nature Reserve not onlyoffers visitors the chance to go fishing, sail-ing or power boating, butwill nowalso allowcanoeingand stand-uppaddlingona trial ba-sis from 1 July.During the trial period, paddling will be

allowed only in Rietvlei’s outer circuit be-tween 07:30 and 10:00 on weekdays. Limitsmay be placed on the number of paddlers onthe water and entrance would be allowed ona first-come-first-served basis.This change is part of the city’s plan to pro-

mote safe, affordable and equitable access toa wide range of recreational opportunitiesin Cape Town’s nature reserves.Paddling is an environmentally friendly,

low impact, and non-motorised form of rec-reation. It does not disturb birds, nor doesit produce the types of contaminants andnoise associated with power boats, makingit very suitable for this nature reserve.The tariffs charged for paddlingwill be the

same as those charged for non-motorisedwater-based recreation (including sailingand windsurfing). Adults would pay R20 perday and childrenbelow18 years of agewould

pay R11,50. Regular sailors and paddlershave the option of paying an annual fee ofR90 which is valid for 365 days from the dateof purchase. These tariffs are in addition tothe regular entry fees per adult (R13) orchild/student/senior (R6,50) and per vehicle(R18) entering the reserve.Other tariffs will also be adjusted on 1 Ju-

ly. Annual entrance permits for regular vis-itors are valid for 365 days from the date ofpurchase and are seniors (R62), adults(R120), and families (R185). Power boats canlaunch into the water at R50 per day or R410with an annual permit. Limited fishing sitesare available on a first-come-first-served ba-sis for adults (R40) as well as children andseniors (R14). Environmental educationpro-grammes can be pre-booked, and range fromR3,50 to R5,50 per learner.Paddlers may use the nature reserve’s ab-

Daar is bitter min pa’s en seuns watsuksesvol kan saam boer. Dis ge-woonlik ’n “gevegsfront” van kop-

stampe en haakplekke wat baie boere eer-der soos die plaag vermy.

Die Steenkamps van Groenland-wyn-landgoed is egter ’n unieke uitsonderingmet ’n pa-en-seun-wenkombinasie wat diélandgoed al ’n string wyntoekennings oordie jare besorg het – 45 toekennings, ompre-sies te wees.

neer drie onderwysers opnames van leer-ders vir die dag by al die hospitaalsale gaandoen. Daarna kom hulle terug skool toe, omskoolwerk vir die leerders te kry wat bedlê-end en te siek is om skool toe te gaan.“Daar is 12 sale indiehospitaal endie getal

kinders wat ons opvoed verskil van dag totdag. Daar is geen vaste bywoningsregisternie, want dit verander elke dag na gelangvan hoeveel kinderpasiënte daar in die hos-pitaal is,” sê Potgieter.“Die meeste van die leerders kan ook nie

gemeng word nie, want hulle het verskillen-de mediese probleme, swak immuunstelselsen sommige het ernstige en aansteeklikesiektes.”Sy sê die kinders wat skool bywoon, moet

ook eers soggens eet en medikasie gebruikvoorhulle skool toekangaan.Al die leerdersmoet om 12:00 weer terugbesorg word by dieverskillende hospitaalsale vir etenstyd. Dieonderwysers gaan doen ook dan opvolgbe-soek aandie leerders bywiehulle die oggendskoolwerk gelos het. Hul amptelikewerkdageindig om 14:30.

“Wanneer die kinders teruggaan sale toevoel hulle beter, want die skool is ’n beken-de omgewing, maar baie was nog nooit in’n skool nie. Dis hartverskeurend,” sê Pot-gieter.Sy spog dat die skool ook die nasionale

kurrikulumvolg soos deur dieWes-Kaapseonderwysdepartement (WKOD) voorge-skryf word, maar nie sport doen nie.

woonbetaal egter skoolgeldnie, omdathul-le almal pasiënte van Tygerberg-hospitaalen uit minderbevoorregte omstandighedeafkomstig is.Die skool ontvang slegs ’n basiese staats-

I’m a kid that likes his sports –skateboarding and riding BMX.I feel that it is a little bitunfair that the people in thepoorer communities havebetter facilities like skateparksthan in the wealthier areas.

For example, next to theDurbanville Soccer Club thereis a skatepark and everyFriday and Saturday there areabout 20 to 30 kids – all ofdifferent ages – looking for aplace to ride their bicycles,scooters and skateboards.

Scottsdene, Belhar and Mitch-ells Plain. There they have niceskateparks that could help usget better at the sport we love,but we cannot go ride there,because of the high crime rate.

The nicest skateparks are inthe worst areas and they arenot being put to good use.People are stealing everythingand every time someone fixes itup, it gets broken down again.

All I’m asking is to pleasetake this message into consider-ation and help us to upgradethe skatepark in Durbanville.

It will be much appreciatedby hundreds of people and itwill be looked after and put togood use. So, it wil not be awaste of time or money.

On 29 April my hip brokeand I was in very severe pain.My daughter called 911 to fetchme so I could be admitted toPanorama hospital. Help others towrap up warmthis winterWhile we have been blessed with somesun over the last few days, there are stillharsh winter nights ahead.

Ingredients:. 500g long grain rice. 250 lentils. 2 tbls olive oil. 3 large onions. Thinly sliced. 1kg seafood mix.. calamari, crab,mussels, kingklip fish and blacktiger prawns. 30ml buttermilk. 2 tomatoes, skinned andchopped. 2 whole green chillies. 5ml ground cumin. 5 cloves. 5 all spice. 5 cardamom seeds. 2 pieces whole cinnamon. 60ml butter. 250 ml hot water

Masala. 6 cloves garlic. 5 ml salt. 2 green chillies. 15ml cumin. 30ml lemon juice. 5 ml turmeric

. 15ml olive oil

Method:Boil rice in salted water until done,about 10 minutes. Rinse in coldwater and drain. Boil lentils separa­tely in salted water for 15 minutes,until done, rinse in cold water, anddrain. Heat up saucepan and braiseonions until golden brown, drain,preserve half and set remainderaside in saucepan.To make masala, pound garlic, saltand chillies in a mortar and pestleand combine with other ingredients.Smear over fish/seafood mix, and fryseafood in a separate well heatedpan, until cooked and firm. Removefrom pan and keep warm.Combine buttermilk, tomato, cumin,cloves, all spice, cardamom seedsand cinnamon, add to onions insaucepan, and simmer for 5 minutes.Adjust seasoning.

De Wallen: gigs getbigger and biggerLOUISA STEYL

“They’re the best live act I’ve ever seen,”and “These guys are fantastic,” are some ofthe things you’ll hear people say after a DeWallen show.

This probably has a lot to do with front-man, Jeandré Swanepoel, whose energeticstage personality has seen him described asa mixture between Mick Jagger and TimCurry’s “Dr Frank-n-Furter”.

It’s not just Jeandré who has people talk-ing though. The rest of the band have someserious musical chops too.

Lead guitarist, Justen Hosken, holds aGrade 3 practical in guitar, but will be doinghis Grade 5 theory and Grade 8 practical inSeptember, while rhythm guitarist, PieterBekker has a Grade 5 in guitar and theoryfrom Unisa. Drummer, Dawid Bosman hashis Grade 8 in drums from the Trinity RockSchool in London and Jeandré himself hasa Grade 6 from Trinity Rock School andGrade 5 from Unisa in guitar.

Together with new bassist, Brandon Bell,De Wallen is on a one-band mission to bring“dirty, sexy, rock ’n roll” back.

WhenTygerBurger last spoke to the band,in June last year, the band was just startingout.

When asked what has happened sincethen, Jeandré says: “Aandklas happened!”referring to the Aandklas Battle of theBands, which the band won last year, earn-ing them a recording deal and a good fewhigh profile gigs.

Before that though, the band had a fewlineup changes, with Justen joining thefamily as an extra guitarist and Brandonstepping in to replace their bassist.

“There’s always going to be a different en-ergy when you add someone new to theband,” Brandon points out, while Justenconfirms that the two brought new influenc-es to the band’s sound.

Justen also adds that while their soundis always developing, at its core their music

is “riff-rock”.When any of the members listen to some-

thing new, they bring it back to the bandand that, Jeandré says, is what keeps themrelevant. “It keeps our performancesfresh,” he says.

The band all cite the Aandklas battle asa milestone in their career.

“It just meant to me, that we are busymaking it,” Pieter says, adding that ithelped the band progress, as opposed to get-ting stuck in a rut.

“It just opened my eyes,” Justen says, ex-plaining that while many bands win things,the opportunity to record made him realisethat the band could get serious and that hedidn’t want them to waste the opportunity.

Jeandré shares Justen’s sentiments, say-ing: “That was the night when I realised I’min this for good.”

The band recorded with Justin Versfeldat Sun Studios and their production will bedone through Patriot Productions.

Since winning the Battle, De Wallen haveopened for acts like aKing and Van CokeKartel.

“Every gig we play is bigger than the pre-vious one and we just have to keep steppingup our game,” Brandon says.

Their next big gig is Friday at Mercurywhen they will play with Red State and TheFootnotes. Tickets for the show cost R30 atthe door.

De Wallen is hoping to start sending outtheir first single to radio stations soon.They will launch their album at Aandklasin Stellenbosch in August.

strooikussings en dekens van topgehalte vir die binnenshuise

ontwerpbedryf en spesialiseer ook in die aanbied van ’n verskei-

denheid opleidingsprogramme in basiese naaldwerk, brei, hekel

en borduur vir individue, korporatiewe groepe en sosiale groepe.

Terwyl Abigail jare gelede as ’n binnenshuise ontwerper gewerk

het by OKHA Interiors in Kaapstad, het sy al hoe meer bewus

geword van die bedryf se aanvraag vir pasgemaakte sagte

dekoritems van goeie gehalte. Om in hierdie behoef-

te te voorsien, het sy Elves at Work op die been

gebring, waarin sy die naaldwerkvaardighede

van mense in haar gemeenskap gebruik. Die

The 2012/2013 cricket season was one of themost successful seasons the DurbanvilleCricket Club experienced in its 55 years ofexistence.Despite the lack of sponsorship, funding

and limited sports playing facilities, the clubhas continuously acknowledged and em-braced its social responsibility role.The senior section of the club achieved the

following achievements during the2012/2013 season:

V WPCA Club of the Year Trophy: 2012/2013 season.

V First team winners of the WPCA Divi-sion 1B League Trophy and Combined1A/1B Division One Day ChampionshipsTrophy. The team was Division 1B AMA 20semi-finalists and promoted back to WPCA1A Division.

V Second team winners of the WPCA Re-serve A Two Day League Trophy.

V Third team winners of the WPCA Re-serve FTwoDayLeagueTrophy and theDayChampionships Trophy. An accomplish-ment achieved two years in a row.

V Fourth team ended fourth in the thirddivision A League.

V Fifth team ended sixth in the third Divi-sion A League.

V Sixth team ended second in third Divi-sion D League. Promoted to third Division3C League.

V Women’s 1st Team - Ended 3rd in the 40over League and 3rd in the AMA 20 League

in the WPCA Women’s 1st Division.The success of the development pro-

grammes is largely due to the contributionsof passionate club members, parents and

coaches who volunteer their services andtime to develop the youth in the community.The club plans to expand the current de-

velopment programmes and activities and

invites the community and schools in thenorthern suburbs to get involved and sup-port the Durbanville Cricket Club initia-tives in preparing the youth for tomorrow.
