Guard yourself against crime with these tipsThe police want residents to bemore aware when it comes to cri-me.

In recent weeks there has beenan increase in incidents invol-ving theft from vehicles and hou-sebreakings.

Prevention is better than cureso they want to equip you withpreventative measures to reduce

crime in your community. To avoid vehicle related crime:When you park your vehicle

make sure that the doors andwindows are closed and locked.

Do not leave valuables likecellphones, laptops, handbags, and money in your vehicle thatare visible to opportunists.

Put your valuables in the boot

of your vehicle.Park your vehicle in a safe and

secure place to minimise the riskof theft.

Safety at home:When leaving your residence

or going to sleep make sure alldoors and windows are locked, including residences with dou-ble stories and balconies.

Ridding the rot of criminalityGARY VAN DYK

A new organisation in Delftwants to rid Roosendal of therot in the community.

The Roosendal Social Safetyand Civil Rights Establishmenthas been launched in an effort tobring about more safety and se-curity for families in the area.

Hassien Jacobs heads this ini-tiative and feels that the time hascome for the community to cometogether to fight the criminal ele-ments that have taken over thearea.

“I have been living in this areasince 1991 and been involvedwith many organisations in thearea to help with security butthings are getting out of handonce again,” he said.

“We have to do something forthe future of our youth in this ar-ea because the area has becomeover-run by drug dens and deal-ers who are leading our youth in-to nothing.

“This has been affecting thewhole area as housebreakingsincrease with addicts having tosupport their habits, and wehave already put some practicesin place to curb the growingtrend of metal theft.

“We have started reporting in-cidents to the copperheadswhere the stolen metal is takento the many illegal scrapyards inthis area.

“It’s all too easy for these crim-inals, they can steal your gates, sell it to the scrapyard and gobuy their drugs, all within walk-ing distance for them,” he said.

Jacobs added that the main ob-jectives of the organisation willbe implementing youth pro-grammes for drug prevention, teenage pregnancy prevention, workshops for career prepara-tion, education, health and nu-trition, sustainable agriculturepractices, as well as music, artsand crafts.

“Part of our plan must be tohave the facilities right here in

the community where it is need-ed and it must be made availablefor our use.

“We want to get partners onboard to help us with our activi-ties, and people with skills in thearea must come forward to help.

“I think there must also be fa-cilities for parents to get somehelp.”

For further information aboutthe organisation call Jacobs on021 956 1998 or 073 734 5344, or Ka-milah Hendricks on 084 911 6646.

Rubble the troubleGARY VAN DYK

The flames of a festive season fire mayhave died, but it is still causing problemsfor a Delft family.

It has been more than a month since a firefrom a neighour’s yard spread to the wendyhouse at the home of Shahieda Bendi inRosendal Road, but she is still waiting onword about repairs to the house, and remov-al of the rubble that is causing problems forher family and surrounding houses.

The incident happened on 23 Decemberlast year and Bendi does not know what todo about the problems that she is experienc-ing.

“Assessors from the Council have beenhere on a number of occasions, but theydon’t tell us anything,” she says.

“While we are waiting to know about re-pairs the bigger problem is what to do aboutthe rubble from the fire.

“We approached our local ward council-lor, Sabrina Gympies, for assistance and wewere told that we had to move the rubblefrom the yard to the front of the house andit will be collected from there.

“We have done this, but when we calledher again we were told that she could donothing about it, and that we would have totake it to a dumping ground ourselves.

“Now, it is becoming a bigger problem be-cause the burn smell from the rubble is dis-turbing the neighbours. Also the sootspreads into their gardens when the windblows through here,” she said.

Ward councillor Sabrina Gympies repliedthat it was Council’s policy to only supplya starter kit to affected families after a fire.

‘No one is above the law’. From page 1.

“You won’t find them doing their properwork of rooting out the drug dens, or check-ing up on the real criminal elements in thearea. They think that can get away withtheir threats against law-abiding residents, but that is coming to an end.”

Capt JoeWilson, communicationsofficerat Delft SAPS, said that they viewed theseallegations very seriously and would belooking into the allegations.

“Our task and that of the NHW is to main-tain law and order and in our endeavourswe have to legally discipline members ofthe public against anti-social behaviour.

“It is however so sad that they will resortto these means and then think that they areabove the law, or that we will turn a blindeye. We will address any conduct unbecom-

ing and will apply the law.“We are however not aware of com-

plaints of this nature and we invite the pub-lic to report to the station any conduct un-becoming on the part of Bambanani’s or po-lice officials, after which we institutedisciplinary steps.

“The taking of cellphones is a criminaloffence and we will deal with it according-ly. Please note that we are constantly polic-ing shebeens and drug outlets and hadsearched 61 drug houses during Januaryand arrested 192 suspects for the illegal pos-session of drugs.

“Drugs is a national priority for this sta-tion and its management.

“The SAPS has a disciplinary code andany contravention will be dealt with ac-cordingly.” he concluded.

Clearly, this is a matter that touchedmany people as evidenced by the 496 com-ments posted on the website relating tothis accident.

Getting a driver’s licence is a signifi-cant moment for any person; it representsfreedom of movement and independence. However, it also represents the seriousresponsibility of practising road safety.

As the only national organisation serv-ing people with epilepsy, we recognisethat if you have epilepsy, this responsibil-ity is even greater. Thus, you shouldmake the decision about whether it is safefor you to drive after careful considera-tion of both your doctor’s advice andSouth African law.

The law regarding driving and epilepsydiffers quite considerably in differentparts of the world. According to the SouthAfrican National Road Traffic Act (Regu-lations 99 and 102, section 15) you are notpermitted to drive if you have uncon-trolled epilepsy.

Apart from this, deciding whether youshoulddriveornot is left to the individualconcerned and his or her doctor. The deci-sion is based on the type and severity ofseizures, and the degree to which they arecontrolled. Studies have shown that peo-ple with uncontrolled seizures do have an

increased risk of a car accident; peoplewhose seizures are controlled, however,do not have a significantly increased risk.

As a general rule a person with epilepsyshould be seizure-free for two years be-fore driving. Regular follow-up examina-tions by a neurologist are essential andcompliance with prescribed treatmentand accurate reporting of seizures, amust.

Even if your seizures are controlledand your doctor has given you the OK todrive, it’s important to always rememberthe following:

. If you changeor stopyourmedicationsuddenly, stop driving until your doctoradvises you it’s safe to be on the roadagain;

. If you have a seizure for the first timein years, stop driving and consult yourdoctor;

. Don’t drive when you’re tired, stressed or ill, as you’re more likely tohave a seizure at such times, and

. Never drink and drive. An inability todrivedue to epilepsy can

be very frustrating and a blow to yoursense of independence.

It is important to note that all seizurescount, even minor ones, no matter howyou view your condition.

If a person with epilepsy continues todrive while seizures are uncontrolled he/she will not be covered by insurance andwill not only be committing a legal of-fence, but placing him/herself and otherroad users at risk.

Remember that there are other ways tostay mobile: explore public transport op-tions or organise a lift club to share costsand a driver with other people in your ar-ea if you are unable to drive or withouttransport.

For further information and ideas onstaying mobile and independent, contactyour nearest branch of Epilepsy SA.

Major marchsays no todrug abuse

GARY VAN DYK

Drug abuse among youth is becoming a big-ger danger in communities.

Recent research and surveys in the areaby the Former Tik Addicts Reach Out(FTARO), and Mothers Against Drug Abuse(MADA) have revealed there is a lot moreat stake if the problem is allowed to spiralout of control.

“The issue of drug abuse among youthshas become so worrying that if nothing ur-gent is done about it our future as a nationmay be shattered,” says Dhakir Christiansof the organisations.

“The manifestation of the dangers of drugabuse among the youth is not far fetched asit can be clearly seen in the alarming ratesof crime perpetrated by young people in allcommunities.

“Unfortunately most of these problemsbeginathomebecause theyare getting thesebad habits from their domestic situations.

“Whatever is done in the family, the childwill most likely follow suit and this has theeffect of posing greater problems that affectall those around them in their communitiesand at school.

“In some cases this filters to the child whocomes from a good home but is drawn todrug abuse through peer pressure. Thisbreaks down the good foundations thatthere are in many homes and we have foundthat this trend has been increasing in recentyears.”

With these problems in mind the two or-ganisations are planning a major anti-drugmarch in Belhar and would like to invite thecommunity, interested organisations andschools of Belhar and the surrounding areasto participate in this awareness campaign.

The proposed march will start at BelharHigh in Suikerbossie Street, and end at theReading Room in Chestnut Place.

Extension for entryGARY VAN DYK

The Small Enterprise DevelopmentAgency (Seda) is on the move to empowerlocal entrepreneurs.

While it has just announced that it is ex-tending the deadline for entries for the SmallBusiness Stars business plan competition, its services have helped an Elsies River cou-ple empower themselves to financial stabili-ty.

Last year Wendy and Oscar Samuels fromElsies River were unemployed with no pros-pects of jobs in their future.

According to business adviser Dalton Ran-dall of Seda service provider Devine Solu-tions, the couple decided to take personal re-sponsibility in order to remedy their situa-tion.

“Although there were several alternativesolutions such as government grants, theseentrepreneurs decided to pursue theirdream,” he says.

“After trusting God and starting smallthey have now managed to sustain them-selves over the last year with a mobile takea-way stand that operates in the area.

“Through our guidance they have now re-ceived a subsidy from Seda in order to pro-mote the business,” said Dalton.

They have created two employment oppor-tunities, doubled their turnover within a pe-riod of a month and also managed to giveback to the community by supporting a feed-ing scheme in the area.

“This is a remarkable achievement and areflection that government is doing their ut-most to alleviate poverty.

“We encourage more people to make useof these services to make a positive differ-ence in their lives if they are thinking ofstarting a small business,” he said.

With this success story in mind the dead-line for entries for the business plan compe-tition has been extended to 29 February, which offers aspirant and existing entrepre-neurs an opportunity to make their entre-preneurial dreams a reality.

Koenie Slabbert, COO of Seda said that al-though interest has been beyond expecta-tions with several thousand entrants regis-tering, many have indicated they requiremore time for thorough market research andto do more work on their financial projec-tions.

Participants can enter any kind of busi-ness idea or an existing business in any in-dustry.

More than R4 million worth of cash andbusiness support prizes await the 40 win-ners.

Once the entries have been judged afterthe closing date, up to 300 finalists fromaround the country will be selected topresent their business idea in person to pro-vincial panels.

From there, the 40 national winners willbe selected.

There are four special award categoriesfor the Best Woman Entrepreneur, Best En-trepreneur with a Disability, Best Youth En-trepreneur and Best Job-Creating Entrepre-neur.

Printed entry forms are also availablefrom any Seda or National Youth Develop-ment Agency (NYDA) branch, for those with-out computer access.

“Even if participants aren’t selected as fi-nalists or winners, they are able to walkaway with an actual business plan.”

“As so iets jou tref, word jy letterlik en figuurlik in diedonker gelos.

Daarlangs die see het ekweer my voete ge-vind.

Hellenic backwith new ideas

LIAM MOSES

Former Premier Soccer League team Hel-lenic have reformed almost eight yearsafter closing down when their PremierLeague franchise was sold to Benoni Pre-mier United.

The team, which is now based in Milner-ton, started training in November last yearand will field three teams in the SuperLeague of the Cape Town Tygerberg FootballAssociation.

According to GrantVeitch, operationsmanager at Hellenic, the club was restartedafter he and MarkByrne, former Hellen-ic player and coach, and the current direc-tor of football, ap-proached the Haji-dakis family to pur-chase the namingrights.

The Hellenic namewas then superim-posed on to BloubergCity Football Club, and a large contingent ofstaff set up shop at the team’s Tygerhof base.

Veitch says developing Cape Town’s abun-dant football talent will be the main aim ofthe team for the immediate future.

“We think there is something missing inCape Town football at the moment. There arecertain clubs and academies around that saythey are the benchmark for youth develop-ment,” said Veitch. “We believe that thebenchmark should be at another level, which we think we can offer.”

The club will function primarily as a foot-ball academy, hoping to develop players thatthey can sell on to professional sides for aprofit, and Veitch hopes that the Hellenicname will help to attract these talentedyoungsters to Milnerton.

Veitch says that he and Byrne also hope

to rebuild the Hellenic brand to its formerglory. “The name will attract a lot of atten-tion and we then have to live up to that ex-pectation. It’s very important that this nameis lookedafter, to thebest of ourability,” saidVeitch.

“And our aspirations are to get Hellenicto where it was all those years ago, up intothe PSL. It’s a very long-term project, but atthe same time it’s something that we are do-ing as a 10 to 15 year programme.”

Hellenic have three coaches for each oneof the three teams currently at the club, as

well as a dedicatedgoalkeeping coachand a biokineticist.

The size of thecoaching staff is muchlarger than mostteams of Hellenic’ssize, but it is the quali-ty of the individualswhich is even moresurprising.

Byrne himself is theformer head of devel-opment at Udinese, while respective u-17and u-13 coaches Ne-

ven Payne and Cecil Ntlebi held the same po-sitions at the original team before it closeddown.

Veitch said that three of the coaching staffare Union of European Football Association(UEFA) accredited and one has the highestlevel of South African Football Association(SAFA) coaching certificate. According toByrne, the high number of staff memberswill help the club to develop the players tech-nically, mentally and physically.

“We have said that our programme is todevelop the individual holistically,” saidByrne.

“I have played overseas, I have coachedoverseas, I know the levels that are required, and it’s hard. We have too many players whogo overseas and then within a year comeback again because they can’t survive.”

Clayton Williams (in blue), of Grassy Parkbased side Evertonians, jumps to control theball ahead of Matroosfontein player Junaid Ismail at the Greens in Manenberg on Sunday29 January. The teams played to a 00 draw in a Metropolitan Premier Cup playoff match.
