Youngsters were getting into the swim ofthings when the city hosted a communityyouth swimming gala in Elsies River re-cently.More than 200 young swimmers aged

between 10 and 16 who currently partici-pate in swimming programmes at the Pa-row Valley, Parow North, Elsies and Ruy-terwacht Swimming Pools, showed offtheir abilities. They have been training for the past few

weeks with lifeguards and the swimmingpool facility officers. The gala, held at the Elsies River Swim-

ming Pool, formed part of the city’s Sport,Recreation and Amenities Department’sLearn to Swim programmes that are hos-ted throughout the summer season eachyear.“A very large percentage of children in

Cape Town cannot swim and do not haveaccess to water education programmes,”said city mayoral committee member forcommunity services and special projects,Belinda Walker.“The City regularly hosts these Learn to

Swim programmes to try and preventdrowning incidents. With approximately460 drowning incidents reported annuallyin South Africa, Learn to Swim program-mes are a priority for the Sport, Recreati-on and Amenties Department.”Many people are prevented from lear-

ning to swim due to a lack of access toswimming pools.“The City is committed to providing in-

creased access to swimmingpools andbea-ches as well as the programmes necessaryfor residents to develop water safety andswimming skills.“This is part of the City’s vision of a sa-

fer, healthier and more inclusive city.Events such as this encourage Capetoni-ans, and the youth especially, to be moreactive while also promoting healthy li-ving,” concluded Walker.

Learners at the Shiloh school in BellvilleSouth are proving they have what it takesto win on the track.Twenty-two of them recently participated

in the Western Province Christian Schools’Sport Association provincial athletics trialsat the Parow athletics track during March.According to coach Jonathan Phillips,

this is the second year some of their athletesqualified, but the first time such a largenumber had the opportunity to participate.“At Shiloh we aim to develop the learners

in every area of life, in linewith their giftingand talents and we are fully aware many le-arners to not excel academically but in vari-ous other areas,” he said.“Despite inadequate athletics facilities at

our school and difficulty for the coaches to

prepare our ever-eager athletes to the bestof our and their abilities, these 22 athletesmanaged to qualify for the provincial trialwhich was a great joy not only for us but toour aspiring athletes as well.”

He said their best trial achievement waseight medals last year.“We thought our learners were not ready

for this year but they proved us wrong bywalking away with 32 medals,” he says.

“This included a thrilling 200m final inwhich our age-13 boys finished in 1st, 2ndand 3rd place.”These 22 learners nowhave the opportuni-

ty to compete in the national athletics com-petition in Pretoria in September this year.Jonathan said while these athletes are ex-

cited about their achievement, each of themare required to raise funds to attend.“For some of our eager future athletics

stars this is a great challenge because oftheir home circumstances, which meansthat they cannot progress since they rely onsponsorships to further their athletic deve-lopment.“We gratefully accept any partnerships

with us to help these athletes achieve theirpotential through donations or sponsors-hips. We want to see them succeed.” he said.V For more information about sponsorship call Jonathan on 076 780 1638.

Youth in Bellville South are taking chargeof their lives through the formation of a newdevelopment strategy in the area.“It has become time for the youth to take

their positive place in our society,” saysDhakir Christians, one of the facilitators ofthe Bellville South Youth Development(BSYD) at their first meeting and electionson Saturday.“Youth are the backbone of the nation

who can change the future of the societywith their vision and courageous behavior.“They are here to show us the way for-

ward from the degradation that hasoverwhelmed most of our communities.”Randall Titus, Program Director for

BSYD, was excited about the initiative butfelt they have a major task ahead to makeall youth aware of their role in life.“There’s still too many young people

caught up in negative activities,” he said.“Too many of them are still attracted to

materialism without seeing the need towork for their futures, so they get caught upin drugs and crime.“They play video games all the time and

just want to party, but here we want to di-rect them on a road to future success in allaspects of their lives.”Christians added that too many young

people have no vision of a positive future.“Wemustmotivate our youth, teach them

responsibility and goal setting.“My fear is that if we do not, we will soon

be supporting an entire generation of home-less and families constantly on welfare.“Things have to change, with our schools,

with the older generation being good rolemodels, being mentors, and with the youthwho are doing nothing to improve their cir-cumstances.”The BSYDmeets at the Bellville South Yo-

uth Centre in Kasselsvlei Road on Satur-days from 16:00.Christians and Titus are of adult over-

seers with Daniel de Villiers, Monique Mo-dise, Tamsyn Jarvis, Claudia Adriaanse,David Maritz, and Clinton Abrahams.V Further information from Christians on 074 9984997 or email [email protected]

In one week four railway police stations, including the Bellville unit, made a num-ber of arrests during clampdown operati-

ons.The operationswere run at four rail stati-

ons – Bellville, Cape Town, Philippi and Re-treat – from Sunday 30 March to Sunday 6April as part of a drive to ensure commutersafety at these stations, said Colonel Them-binkosi Kinana, a provincial police spokes-person.He said during patrols in the trains and

along stations, stop-and-search procedureswere conducted and a number of suspectsarrested on charges ranging from assault torape to robbery and malicious damage toproperty.Onearrest at theBellville station followed

a suspect being found in possession of coun-terfeit R100 notes, as well as a charge fortheft, he said.

ClampdownKinana said a total of 28 suspects were ar-

rested for carrying tik, dagga, heroine,man-drax or khat on their person. Two suspects at Bellville were found to be

in possession of dangerous weapons – kni-ves – at the Bellville station and two atKleinvlei, among other related arrests, hesaid. For lesser transgressions such as uri-nating in public, illegally crossing the rail-way tracks, holding a train door open whilethe train is in motion and not possessing avalid train ticket, a number of people recei-ved so-called J534 fines.“A vehicle, Mazda 323, registration num-

berCA923443,was stolen inDurbanville andwas recovered by the railway police mem-bers – found abandoned.“In total 86 suspects were either arrested

or received a J534 in the rail environment.

Drugs and other goods to the value of a totalof R39 871 were recovered,” Kinana said.“Approximately 750 000 commuters make

use of the train on a daily basis and are poli-ced by the railway police. There are approx-imately 688 train trips during the day thatare policed jointly by Railway Police mem-bers and Metrorail Protection Services andtheir contracted security members.”He said 485 trains were patrolled, 3 975 pe-

ople were searched, 103 vehicles were sear-ched, 1 431 visits to rail stations and 173 footpatrols were conducted.Metorail released a statement last week

saying they have begun seriously clampingdown on transgressors.

Safe service“We will arrest and prosecute anyone

caught hanging on the outside of the train– this includes those people that staff rideour trains in between stations” said Mosen-ngwa Mofi, PRASA’s CEO.

“Our message is clear: Metrorail will nottolerate dangerous and unsafe travel practi-ces.We have onmany occasions agreed thatcurrently, our service is not to our custo-mer’s needs in terms of on-time performan-ce and reliability,” Mofi said.“At the heart of it, we as Prasa Rail want

to run a safe and efficient service while stillundergoing major improvements and mo-dernisation that will, in time, be able to res-pond to customer expectations.“Until such time, wewill not condoneuns-

afe travel in the name of overcrowding andour trainswill not leave the platform if com-muters are not securely inside the trainwith closed doors,” Mofi said.Reported incidents of vandalism included

238 deaths andmore than 2 000 asset-relatedcrimes. This amounted to 189 incidents permonth and around seven incidents per day.“The direct cost of vandalism due to re-

pairs and replacements amounts to R167million,” Mofi said.

Members of The Settlers High Dyna-mix jazz band recently rode the crestof a musical tsunami when they got

to perform alongside international jazz gre-ats, Shakatak.

Prior to the fantastic opportunity, thegroup were armed with hands-on showbizknowledge when they completed a coursefor arts and culture focus schools fromacross the Western Cape.

Craig Parks, a coordinator of the CapeTown International Jazz Festival YouthTraining and Development Programme, ex-plained that through the programme lear-ners were taught about the “behind the sce-nes” side of the music industry, with the fo-cus on putting together a festival.

The four-week programme culminated ina concert by the ten participating schools onSunday 23 March.

These schools included The Settlers,Groote Schuur, South Peninsula, Wynberg,Heathfield, Chris Hani and Belhar HighSchools, as well as participation by learnersfrom the Cape Music Institute, Crystal Hou-se Academy and the Intyholo Schools Pro-ject.

A sea of peopleAs part of the programme, the schools we-

re invited to be part of the Cape Town JazzFestival, with the chance to play on one ofthe festival stages.

They are treated like any other artist,Craig said.

“I promise you, the stars get made here,”he said.

Tracey Appolis, the Dynamix’s band di-rector, said three of the band members –Keenan Jacobs, Jodi Fredericks and Dami-an Kamineth – were selected through theprogramme to perform in the Schools AllStar Superband.

This band then went on to perform at theCape Town International Jazz Festival FreeConcert at Green Market Square on Wed-nesday 26 March.

“They were overwhelmed by the sea of pe-ople and enjoyed entertaining the crowd,”Tracey said.

A few days later the All Stars got to openfor international band Shakatak at the Sun-day After Jazz Concert at MaynardvillePark on Sunday 30 March.

Dynamix band member Jodi Fredericks(18) toldTygerBurgerhow exciting the expe-rience was.

“Wow! Wow! And wow again! Really, whatan honour. I mean Shakatak has been co-ming on for years. They’re legends, and tohave shared the same stage was an extremehonour. Truly a blessing,” Jodi said.

Tracey said this was the biggest stage theband had ever performed on.

“They have worked extremelyhard...They have achieved a lot and impro-ved significantly in a short space of time,”she said.

“These young musicians have broughtgood credit to the school, I am very proudof them, proud to be their teacher, and I amlooking forward to a year filled with manymore musical experiences and growth,” ent-hused Tracey.

Jodi’s mom, Renee Sellidon, said she hadhigh hopes for her daughter’s musical ca-reer.

The unprotected strike by bus drivers fromthe Transpeninsula Investments (TPI) vehi-cle operating company was resolved lastweek Thursday after it severely interruptedthe MyCiTi bus service.

The strike started at 05:00 on Wednesdaymorning and even though the T01 route (Du-noon, Table View, Civic Centre, Waterfront)was affected, the fact that only seven of the38 buses on the route are operated by TPIlessened the impact.

The strikers barricaded the gates at thedepot in Prestwich Street in Green Point onWednesday, preventing the MyCiTi busesfrom departing.

On Thursday morning 10 TPI drivers didarrive for work, and they, along with stand-

in drivers from other vehicle operatingcompanies, assured that MyCiTi could ope-rate effectively along T01.

A small group of striking drivers employ-ed by TPI gathered on Thursday morningat the bus depot in Prestwich Street, but noincidents were reported by city’s law enfor-cement officials who attended the scene.

An agreement to end the two-day unpro-tected strike was signed late on Thursdaybetween TPI and the striking drivers afterthe Commission for Conciliation, Mediati-on and Arbitration assisted with the negoti-ations.

At least 80% of the drivers resumed theirduties by the end of the day and on Fridayall drivers reported for duty.

hom, is eneD.J. Frans.

Dis eerder by winkelsentrums, kitsban-ke of sake-ondernemings.

‘Bendebloed kanvloei’ oor duikwegBRENDEN RUITER

Daar is ooknog baie ander foute. Eers hetons langs ’n tikhuis gebly.Ten minste was daar toe niks

’n Hond

Walking along Erica Drive onemorning, at the back of somehouses – possibly in ArctotisWay – I was greeted by asplash of dirty leaves comingover the wall of someone’shouse where someone wascleaning the pool.Further up the road there

was loads of doggy poo on thesandy part of the sidewalk. This also looked as if it wasjust dumped over the backwall.Come on dog and pool

owners, when you pick upyour dog’s poo, please flush itdown the drain.I also once owned a dog and

that’s what I did. Pool owners,

Do your bit to keepour sidewalks clean

do not throw leaves from yourpool over the wall, surely youcan dispose of them in a bettermanner. Spare a thought to thepedestrians using the sidewalkand let’s do our bit to keep ourarea clean.

With this letter I want toexpress my disgust and unhap-piness with the picture thataccompanied the article “Skaap-kop-rekord in die visier”(TygerBurger, 2 March). As a vegan and animal lover,

it was rather upsetting to see –I feel it was unnecessary (as)the article was informativeenough.I’m aware you reserve the

right to print anything pertain-ing to local news and freedomof speech, but people of allwalks of life and with all kindsof conviction, such as veganism, read your newspaper. I sincere-ly hope you will take us intoconsideration and be kind toour feelings.I can’t speak for others – only

for myself. Despite that, yournewspaper is excellent and ahighlight of my week.

As kinders vermis word, dan

SLICE OF LIFE

mense daarom verskriklik as diere skadeaangedoen of benadeel word.

An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race slated to be held at theV&A Waterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27April.

The World Triathlon Cape Town race willserve as the second stop on the eight-citytour which starts in Auckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town is one of only two cities to de-but on the WTS calendar in 2014, with Chica-go also hosting an event for the first time.

The world’s top triathletes have confir-med their participation in theCapeTown legof the series. With eight of the top ten elitemen on the start list, spectators can expecta tight, action packed race. Local hero Ri-chard Murray (ranked 5th) will take on Ma-rio Mola (ESP), who narrowly beat him by18 seconds in the World Cup season openerin Mooloolaba last month, as well as fellowSpaniard Javier Gomez who is number oneon the WTS rankings. With 15 and sevenWorld Series wins under their respectivebelts, Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jona-than are the most successful elite athletes inthe history of the series and will be lookingto retain their position.

Ladies hold their ownThe elite ladies race will certainly rival

the men’s in terms of action. With the topthree ladies on the WTS rankings, JodieStimpson (GBR), Non Stanford (GBR) andAnne Haug (GER) confirmed, the competiti-onwill beno less intense than the elitemen’srace. Olympic silver medallist Lisa Norden(SWE) will also be making her ITU World Se-ries comeback in Cape Town after the 2012Olympics. Along with Helen Jenkins (GBR),she’ll be looking to regain her former ITU

World Triathlon Series glory.Says Richard Murray: “To compete in

front of my home crowd in an ITU World Se-ries event is already special. To know thatI amgoing to be racing against the best athle-tes in theworld is going tomake for anunfor-gettable experience and epic race.

“This event will give South Africans theopportunity to watch or take part in a pro-am event, which caters to both elite andmass participation. It’s incredibly impor-tant in terms of growing the sport locally.Having Discovery as title sponsor and Vir-gin Active as a partner - both large compa-

nies with a focus on promoting healthy li-ving - will also go a long way to raise the pro-file of triathlon amongst ordinary weekendwarriors and the public.”

“We are thrilled to have the opportunityto sponsor the ITU World Triathlon SeriesCape Town event, which is the first event ofits kind to be held in South Africa, and onthe African continent,” says Gidon Novick,Discovery Vitality CEO.

Promoting health“The triathlon is viewed as the ultimate

healthy lifestyle sport, as it promotes a grea-

ter consciousness of healthy living and ea-ting. Furthermore, the triathlon is the fas-test growing Olympic sport which attractsnew participants every year, and it is alsoa sport gaining traction in South Africa. Theaverage active South African is able to easi-ly run 5km, swim 500m and cycle 20km, andI believe this event will gain a strong follo-wing in South Africa.”

“Discovery is committed to helping peopleto understand their health risks, and to leadhealthier, active lifestyles that have a positi-ve impact on their health, wellbeing andoverall quality of life,” says Novick. “Eventssuch as the Discovery World Triathlon CapeTown event provide a fantastic platform forus to spread this message and educate morepeople about the importance of taking res-ponsibility for their own health and wellbe-ing.”

Global issue“Health and wellness is a very important

issue worldwide, especially in light of the ri-sing burden of non communicable diseasesthe world is experiencing,” Novick adds.“Vitality encourages people to know theirhealth, improve their health and enjoy therewards as leading a healthier lifestyle andmakinghealthier choices is important in thefight against non communicable diseasessuch as obesity, diabetes, stroke, cardiovas-cular disease and certain cancers.”

Age groupers will have the option to choo-se between a standard Olympic distancecourse or hone their speed skills on a sprintcourse. Standard and sprint distance teamrelays are also on the schedule, offering a ra-ce for all abilities.

In addition to the competitions, athleteswill be treated to a weekend full of festivitiesincluding sundownconcerts, a race exhibiti-on, kids and family races.

An era when sport played a big part inthe community was rememberedwhen Maitland Giants Baseball Club

hosted a reunion last week.Former star players spoke about the game

with fond memories of the enjoyment thatit brought to them as players, and most im-portantly, the positive impact it had on themas juniors taking the lessons of discipline in-to their adult lives.Whilemany of those playersmay have left

the Maitland area and spread across thePeninsula, it was obvious that the “Giants”retained a special place in their hearts. This event was the brainchild of Miles Oc-

tober, a former player who rose through theranks from junior level, and wants to giveback to his community through a new orga-nisation Play Sport4Life (PS4L).“PS4L is a new sport for development ven-

ture based in the Kensington/Factreton/Maitland areas that wants to revive sport inthe area,” he says.“We organised this event because wewan-

ted to highlight how important sport was inthe community andwewanted to honour so-me of the club’s former greats who were in-ducted into the club’s Hall of Fame.“It’s important thatwe showour apprecia-

tion for the role that these guys played in so

many lives.”While the evening was well attended and

saw former players from many areas get to-gether for the first time, there was also a bigsurprise for them.“Kenny Roman, the club star pitcher from

the 1970s, was flown in from Australia to at-tend the event and surprised birthday boyon the night Danny Page, when he walkedin with a huge Maitland Giants birthday ca-ke,” continues Miles.“This was very special for so many of the

members because Kenny was one of thestars of our teams and he shared some of thehighlights ofhis playingdayswith thegathe-ring.”Miles was very serious about the goals of

Play Sport4Life in his home suburb.“We want to revive sport in the communi-

ty as a means to deal with the social issuesplaguing it – rampant drug abuse, gang vio-lence and crime. PS4L intends to provide asafe environmentwhere children and adultscan play sport and have fun and at the sametime learn essential skills such being disci-plined, team work and respect for others.“Other sports clubswhich have benefitted

from PS4L sponsorship this year includesNorway Parks Football Club, Athlone AsBaseball Club and Kenfac Phillies SoftballClub.”V For more information on Play Sport4Life visitwww.playsport4life.org.
