a video of the donations and the childrenbecause I wanted more people to see whatthe real situation at the school actuallylooked like.“I knew that the Grade 11s at the school

had to take on a special project for the yearand I asked if I could present the pro-gramme to them, thankfully three groupsresponded and we can make this donationtoday.”Martin also added that there was also a

local connection with her brother-in-lawalso chipping in.“I must also thank David Coetzee, a local

businessman, who took up my challengethat for everypair of shoes that got donatedhe would sponsor a nice warm jersey, butthere were also donations to give themsome special eats and treats on this day,”she said.“I am making another video this year,

and I hope that it will inspire more learn-ers at our school to help me with thisproject for next year.”

Shiloh celebratesfull accreditationGARY VAN DYK

The Shiloh Centre of Learn-ing in Bellville South iscelebrating another milestonein its mission to providequality education to learners. They recently enjoyed

receiving their accreditationfrom Umalusi, an organisa-tion that assures and accred-its private education andtraining institutions, includ-ing independent schools.Denver Brevis from the

school said that privateinstitutions apply for accredi-tation and there are threeinter-related focus areas thatform part of the evaluationprocess.“There is evaluation of the

extent to which the institu-tion is considered to have thecapacity to offer a qualifica-tion that is certified byUmalusi as the QualityCouncil for General andFurther Education andTraining.“The effectiveness of the

institution’s internal process-es in respect of curriculumdelivery and assessment oflearner achievement and in

this regard Umalusi’s evalua-tion focuses on the institu-tion’s internal systems withregard to effective curriculumimplementation as well as onthe standards of internalassessment.“They also look at the

extent to which the institu-tion is meeting its intendedobjectives and those of thestate, benchmarking theachievements against theachievement trends in theindependent school sector aswell as the institution’s ownvision and mission,” he said. The school embarked on the

process of quality assuranceat inception in 2002 whenonly provisional accreditationwas granted to all independ-ent schools until the Ministerof Basic Education finalisedand approved the finalcriteria as mentioned abovein 2012.It was part of the pilot

project for final accreditationand a stringent process. This afforded the school the

privilege to be one of only 33schools in South Africa tohave received full accredita-tion.

Please do not throw ‘gold’ awayPeople are urged toremember the thousands ofunderprivileged peoplewhen they discard theirused items.Val Young, founder and

Foundation has providedclothes and other usefularticles to a number of

unfortunate people, as wellas assisting others increating an income tosupport themselves andtheir families,” she said.“This and much more,

such as providing medicalequipment, providing jobs, helping abused mothersand children has beenpossible only due to caringpeople from the communityand surrounding areas, forwhich we are most grate-ful,” she said.“As we have also been

The love for literacy is growing in Delft withThe Cape Peninsula University of Technolo-gy leading the way.

On Friday the Civic Engagement Unit inconjunction with the libraries at the facilityset up libraries at three primary schools inDelft as part of the Mandela Day campaign.

This year’s theme was, Literacy: Revivingthe culture of reading, with donations of ap-proximately 22 boxes of books received fromoutside donors such as the Centre for theBook and Read SA, helping to start these fa-cilities at schools.

These donations were apart from thebooks already donated by the CPUT commu-nity and Grade 7 learners from all threeschools also received stationery sets.

The recipient schools were Roosendal,Hindle Road and Abadare primary schools.

Excitement was already running high ear-lier in the week when about 70 volunteerswere engaged in different activities in prepa-ration for the event, including painting oneof the libraries, and sorting the books.

Starting these libraries is the beginning ofan ongoing relationship that CPUT is nur-turingbecause inorder for the theme tohavea meaning, the beneficiaries of the projectwill have to sustain it.

In this regard the CPUT library staff havealready started to train teachers at theschools in order to ensure that they have theskills to manage the libraries.

The Centre for the Book will also establishbook clubs at the schools to encourage thelearners to keep reading.

Culture of reading takeshold as new libraries set up

An interesting photographic exhibition ishappening at the Bellville South library un-til Saturday.Nine young girls from two schools in the

area were given the opportunity to partici-pate in a photographic course during theschool holidays, and the exhibition. This is My Story, is their look at life

through the lens of a camera. The project was initiated by the WOW-

Movement Proudly Female Teenage Pro-gramme under the mentorship of TeardropProductions with learners from BellvilleSouth and Winsley primary schools.During the three weeks of the course the

learners were taught the basics and also giv-en disposable cameras to go out into theircommunities and capture the story that theywanted to tell, and each of them came backwith a unique presentation of their creativi-ty.The results that can be seen at this exhibi-

tion are an eye-opener to the dreams and as-pirations of the youth in our communities, because each of these young ladies gives youa sign of the artist that iswithin every younglife, we just have to find a way to nurtureit to achieve its positive potential.Migail October, from Bellville South Pri-

mary, was one of the photographers who im-pressed me with her presentation of trees –not on their own – their relationship tostructures near them is part of her story. One of her pictures beautifully brings out

the contrasts of a wooden shack next to thegnarled remains of a tree stump and it wasa favourite of many of the visitors on theopening night last week.Curston Felix was another young photog-

rapher who impressed with her differentperspective of life through a lens.

Smoke curling around a clothesline wascaptured by this young lady to tell a storyabout pollution.RoscaWarries, one of the facilitators, con-

fessed that she was also inspired by theselearners, who were just so hungry to experi-ence the joys of taking photos.“After teaching them some basics we let

them out on the world, and whenwe saw theresults we were totally amazed,” she said.“Each of them developed their own sort of

style that brought out their unique personal-ity.“These ranged from fashion photography,

to nature, and journalism, and the artisticside came out in some of the abstract photosthat they took, but each one was interest-ing.”The exhibition can be seen at the library

in Kasselsvlei road during library hours.Kirstin Volcom, left, also facilitated the course, seen here with learners from Winsley PrimarySchool, Jodrin Fortune, Brogen Petersen, and Jesmaine Hesqua. Absent was Lezanne Charles.

en my afgetrek.

Hy beweer verder daar was twee spook-

Dekker vra waarom SABS-geregistreerde

Bosman sê: “As ’n voorval van verbale of

mag as ’n gewone verkeersbeampte.

Stad se eenheid ‘spook’ by motoristeDaniel Dekker sêdie petisie salvoortgaan om diespookeenheid testop.

SAREL BURGER

VerskuldigDie HS Tygerberg is egter ’n verduideli-

Ander wenspanne was Tygerberg-klub

THOMAS CAROLUS

All roads lead to Cravenby on Sunday whenRiverside Rangers face Invincible Cravenbyin a derby match of the Northern SuburbsFootball Association Super League.Pierre Swartz, the Riverside Rangers’ left-

back and former Invincible Cravenby play-er, says the team know how important three

points from the match against his formerteam will be for their title hopes.“They’ll be coming at us hard because

they want revenge. We have already set astandard for ourselves by beating BelharSpurs 4-1, now we have to maintain it.’’Swartz added that he is particularly

pleased with the team spirit and the contri-bution by the new recruits to the team. “The

teamspirit amongst the guys is at an all-timehigh. The new guys in the team raised thelevel of competition, and that can only leadto a stronger squad. The fact thatmost of thenew players are so doing well and are con-tributing to the team’s good start, motivatesthe rest of the guys to work even harder.”As far as his individual performance is

concerned, he is pleased with how he has

fared so far, adding that there are still someareas of his game that he is working onsharpening up.Coach Leslie Mondo knows it won’t be a

walk in the park, he is not expecting Invinci-ble Cravenby to roll over and die. He hascalled for cool heads and total disciplinefrom his charges, and that they give Invinci-ble the respect they deserve on the pitch.

over the age of 35 and the tournament hasmen’s and women’s competitions.Apart from Falcons, the other Cape Town

clubs who have entered teams this year are

Glenthorne Athletics, Pirates, Old MutualCubs and Hamiltons.Jangle says Falcons decided to host the

tournament in Pinelands because TurfhallSports Complex, the location of Cape Town’sonly softball stadium, is currently beingused for football fixtures. The venue also hasthe required space and facilities, such as aclubhouse.Falcons have had to fund the tournament

themselves and have been hard at work se-curing sponsors.

the fields free of charge, but we will makea donation to the school,” says Jangle.

“Every player has to pay to participate, while the rest of the money will come fromsponsorships.”She has sponsors for the diamonds (pitch-
